Take It Off (12; 28K): Santana hadn't wanted to move to Lima, Ohio, but there hadn't been much of a choice. Living there, there were only a few things she was sure of: Her apartment was small, Puck was her friend, and Sirens was going to be the death of her.
Many the Miles (25; 105K): AU. A car crash changes the course of 3 lives forever.

Clockwork* (38; 209K): They said she was just a pretty face, a model fed lines to sell a product. But if you squinted, there was more to Santana Lopez than they gave her credit for, and reporter Brittany Pierce was going to get to the bottom of it.

Hey, Lima, I’m SANTANA LOPEZ but everyone calls me SNIX, I identify as a CIS WOMAN and use SHE/HER pronouns. I was born on AUGUST 27TH making me TWENTY-ONE years old and a VIRGO. Most people call me the HBIC, maybe that’s because I am INTELLIGENT but also VAIN. If I had to describe my vibe, I would say it revolves around BREADSTIX, SHORT SKIRTS, & SMOKING CIGARS. Of course there is one thing I hope no one ever finds out, and that's I’M A CLOSETED LESBIAN & PUCK IS MY BEARD. Anyway, on a more fun note, people always say I look like CIERRA RAMIREZ.
FAMILY INFORMATION

HEADCANONS
From a young age, the Lopez children were being taught the importance of working hard. With their father being a doctor and their mother being a lawyer, they were at least well off enough that the kids were given opportunities most people that look like them weren't given. From music and dance lessons to sports, the Lopez children were all well rounded in something, which was how they liked it. But having extremely busy parents came with one downside: while their parents worked, the children were sent to Lima Heights Adjacent to be watched by their abuela, Alma Lopez. The woman is a strict, religious hard ass, so her grandchildren were being taught to stand up for themselves while also being respectful of her beliefs. That might not have been too hard when they were younger, but as she got older, Santana found herself testing her abuela and her beliefs more and more.
Although Santana could still excel in school and in cheerleading, it didn't take long for her to start rebelling once she hit her teenager years. What started out as just talking back to her teachers or telling a lie here or there to her parents quickly turned into stealing from her parents' liquor cabinet and sneaking out to parties. She didn't think any of it was that bad, or enough to get her disowned, but that changed in high school when she noticed the way her stare started to linger under her friend's skirts. Abuela had practically recited bible passages to her family for as long as San could remember, so she knew that the old woman saw homosexuality as an unforgivable sin, and she would outright disown her for it. Santana may have been her favorite grandchild (don't tell her siblings that), but Alma Lopez wouldn't go against her religious beliefs even for her mini me.
Withholding her desires for women worked out through high school, mostly, but by the time she graduated and was moving on to college, Santana knew she wouldn't be able to fight it for long. That's where Puck came in. The two are practically the male and female versions of the same person, so while their chemistry is mostly platonic, it's off the charts. With him being a single father who was quietly bisexual and hiding the identity of his baby mama, and her needing out of her parents' house so she could indulge in the beauty of women while in the closet, the perfect opportunity fell into their laps: they would be each other's beards. San moved in with him and his daughter Maya, who refers to her as Tia Santana, and as far as people know, the two are in a happily committed relationship. When Maya's asleep, San brings women she's met through her job at Babes over for a nightcap, and then kicks them out before her niece wakes up in the morning begging for Spanish lessons. It's almost too perfect of a situation, in her opinion, and it's her best option until she can get out of Ohio for good.

Denver was born from pure unadulterated want and that colored the rest of his life. For years, his mothers had been trying to have a child and then one day, there he was.
He grew up rather sheltered. With his mother working as a park ranger in the remote tundra and his mama working as a university-funded biological researcher, and had a hard time learning how to make friends when he was enrolled in public school at 10 years old.
Denver quickly bloomed into a people-pleasing kind-hearted social bookworm, a muddle of conflicting introverted and extroverted tendencies leading him to be an ideal confidant for many.
Choosing to move to a more populated area for college was hard on both Denver and his mothers. They had never had much time apart and the first night spent in his dorm room in a medium sized city had Denver thinking the worst.
He quickly adjusted to college life, took up a internship at the college library, and graduated in first with a bachelors in library science then a masters in information science
Denver hadn’t planned on moving to Hellmouth, but when Apparition Archives reached out to him about a job offer (one that his mama had called and put his name in for, unbeknownst to him), it was an opportunity that he could not pass up.
Denver is still trying to pave his own way in life and find the niche that he suits in the city. More often than not, he misses the tundra and the freedom that he had while there in his animal form.
Recently, Denver tied himself to a witch. Shani was simply someone that Denver had known casually through the library. She was someone who he had one day found to share a common interest of his, hiking, and so they decided to make a habit of accompanying one another. Little did they know, this common interest would lead to them being more closely connected than either could have ever imagined.
Though he had never planned on becoming a familiar, there was little choice when Shani and he were checking out a cave system on a hike and the structure collapsed around them. Everything went black and Denver awoke to excruciating pain in his chest and absolutely no sensation below his ribcage. Shani was knelt beside him and Denver still remembers his agony-laden mind trying to make sense of what was happening. Through the roaring of his blood in his ears, he could hear her- they were trapped, he was crushed under a large chunk of rock, she had been trying to heal him but it was too much. In that moment, it was either make the pact or die. While it was a no-brainer for Denver, who was at immediate risk of losing his life, he still thinks about the decision that Shani had made, choosing to bond herself forever to a relative stranger, to save his life.
Still, Denver has not told either of his parents, somewhat afraid of their reaction due to their reclusive nature as shifters. He is also still wrestling with some shame affiliated with making the bond (due to some of the shifter world’s view on it) and the newfound connection he has with his friend.

meet safiya!
Cleo’s back! With an updated bio! With a new face! And a new name! And age! She’s from Egypt this time instead of Spain! With Cordelia being a wee bit younger! And an NPC! Still broke Emmett’s and Dilan’s hearts though. Oopsies.
Safiya Khalil, rich billionaire who is the CEO and creator of the international chain dinner and a show global seafood restaurant Amphitrite’s Cove and the marine wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation center and aquarium Minnow’s Sanctuary, located in Providence Peak and with a new location coming soon to Hilo, Hawai’i. Also a philanthropist. Also the mother of Cordelia Lopez-Khalil(-Chambers). Also a budding marine biologist who’s slowly working on her masters through the University of Alaska: Fairbanks Online. Also in love with Emmett Chambers. Wants to marry him, grow old together, be Lucky’s mama again, and have his babies. Trying to figure out how to tell him all of that after breaking up with him due to being scared of losing him like she lost her first husband, Miguel. Full bio’s down below. Bye bye.
TRIGGER WARNINGS: teen pregnancy, car accident, death, escorting
For as long as Safiya can remember, she loved the sea. She loved its mystery and beauty, how it enchanted and inspired countless of people before her. How so much of it has been discovered but even then, still just barely scratching the surface. She loved how she felt at home with the sea. For as long as she can remember, Saf wanted to dedicate her life to giving to the sea. As sort of a repayment for all that the sea has given to mankind. And she soon would. But how she got to that, she discovered, wasn’t her initial plans.
Restaurant owners Tarek and Rashida loved their little girl from the moment they discovered they were having her. Living in Port Said, life was good. But as the girl was beginning to grow older, they eventually decided that moving somewhere new could be a good thing for them. Eventually, the Khalil family moved from Egypt to Hilo, Hawai’i when Safiya was four years old. Two years later, they would all eventually be able to become American citizens. While they still made sure to visit their family back in Egypt during the summer, they were happy on the little island. Especially Safiya. With her hometown located on the Mediterranean Sea and her new home located in the Pacific Ocean, all it could do was reinforce her love for the sea. Growing up on the island, she would basically wake up early in the morning to be able to meet up with her friends to go swimming and surfing before school, and then just to head back to the water right after the bell rang. For the longest time, she had considered becoming a marine biologist. And if she somehow wasn’t out in the water, then she was at her family’s restaurant where she helped them with cooking. Another love of hers that would eventually change her life for the better.
Eventually, pricing in Hawai’i became too unbearable for the Khalil family and they eventually moved in-land. They made their new home in Nashville, Tennessee when she was thirteen years old. Going from living the ‘aloha’ life of Hilo to the ‘yeehaw with a dash of racism and homophobia’ life of Nashville was… unexpected. And for the longest time, she hated it. For years, she’d been planning on moving back to Hilo for college, to go back home. That is… until she turned sixteen. A boy came into her life and she fell hard and fast for him. He truly carried that Southern charm people hear about and was a truly good person. Her parents adored the young man and approved of their relationship. Everything went so fast and suddenly, they found themselves pregnant. Safiya had been terrified of losing him; Instead, he asked her to marry him. They gave birth to Cordelia Khalil when they were both 17 years old, marrying when they were 18. Their daring little Minnow bringing much joy and happiness to their young lives. They were happy those first couple of years, moving to Los Angeles for school. Safiya doing a double major in Marine Biology and Business. All was well... Until one night, Saf lost her husband in a car accident. Her heart was broken when she lost him, yet she had to keep going. Both for herself and for her daughter.
Being both a widowed young mother and a college student in Los Angeles is… not an easy thing. Working multiple odd jobs at a few seafood restaurants and theaters, while also working as a high-end escort for some of Hollywood’s elite to make some extra money, she did everything she could. As much as Safiya didn’t want to, her hands were tied and escorting made good money. She was able to provide for her child and for herself, no matter how badly she was treated. However, the young woman eventually came up with an idea. Not long after she graduated from college at the age of 22, she started up a small dinner and a show Mediterranean and MENA seafood restaurant in Santa Monica.
At first, business was slow. But eventually, business began to pick up. Amphitrite’s Cove became a hot spot for both locals and tourists alike. It wasn’t long until they had to find a new and bigger location, expand the menu to include seafood from all around the globe, and create more acts. Soon, two more locations in Los Angeles happened. And then eventually, more locations popped up in Southern California. By the time Saf was twenty-eight, locations up and down the West Coast, along with a location in Seward, Alaska and her old hometown of Hilo, Hawai’i popped up. She’d also had been working on locations in Denver, Colorado, St. Louis, Missouri, and Nashville, Tennessee. Soon enough, she went international. Having a few restaurants across Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia and New Zealand. She eventually quit all of her other jobs, especially the escorting one. She made agreements with all of her clients that neither she nor they would ever discuss their previous relationships. They would invest in her business, she would remain quiet. And an empire was born.
And then nearly five years ago, she began to work on a new location more in-land: Providence Peak, Colorado. The adjustment of leaving Los Angeles for Colorado hadn’t been too easy, especially for then fifteen year old Cordelia, who eventually turn eighteen and graduated high school not too long ago. The girl now about to turn twenty. But along with working hard on her growing empire of Amphitrite’s Cove, she has also been working hard on being a perfect mother for her daughter. She always says that her daughter is her greatest achievement and her most wonderful treasure. Safiya’s main priorities have been raising Cordelia and expanding her empire, working on adding more locations across the East Coast and eventually more within the Heartland of America. Who’s to say what the future may hold, but Safiya’s little empire is becoming bigger and bigger. And nothing’s going to stand in her way or ruin the life she has built for herself and her daughter. She’s even opened up an aquatic wildlife sanctuary and rehab center called Minnow’s Sanctuary in Providence Peak three years ago, named right after her daughter. For so long, after all the horrible shit, life was good.
And things have now gotten better. Cordelia has returned back to Providence Peak, having left due to college. Nothing could describe how much Safiya missed her daughter, how being reunited makes her so happy. However, remembering that Dela is an adult now is... well, very hard to do. Despite having been so close, the two are butting heads constantly. Have been ever since Dela declared that she wasn’t going to attend the university in Providence Peak. Safiya loves her more than anything and wants her to be happy; She’s just struggling with remembering to pull the reigns back in. All Saf knows is that she would do anything for Dela. She’s her baby, no matter how old she gets.

Happy New Year! (hopefully, cuz... whew!)
Ugh! Let's get this year over with; what do you say?? I don't even want to rehash the year like I normally would around this time of year.
Pre-COVID seems like so long ago: We were out at bars, games, concerts, and parties of strangers. We were dancing all up on each other, we were passing the bottle around, we were grabbing all kinds of doorknobs with no concerns. Kids were planning to soon graduate and step into their hopeful, bright futures. Adults were planning vacations around the world to escape a once hopeful present.
Times were good! Look at this groundhog eating pizza.
Not a care in the world.
And then, Thanos snapped his fingers, the world turned into shit, and we all realized how much we cared about Tom Hanks.
Can you imagine if that were literal? I think someone should get another gauntlet and turn planets into literal piles of crap. A new villain - "Poopfingers"
Ew... I know. I'm sorry.
Like I said, I don't want to talk about that stuff. I'd rather focus on entertainment instead. Join me for a few awards that I like to call "The Praphies"
MOVIE OF THE YEAR -
"WAP"
I know what you're thinking - "That's not a movie." Meh, it's movie-ish.
It's got two protagonists, whom are trapped in a mansion. It kinda reminds me of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, but instead of chocolate being manufactured, we'd got... pleasure. Who doesn't want more pleasure after the year we've had??
There's a lot of weird things happening in the mansion, so that’s good for the plot. Plus, these ladies are all about... empowerment? - I guess?
Sure.
Kylie Jenner shows up for some reason, so I'm sure she's up to something; maybe she's the villain. And according to the lyrics "there's some whores in this house". Will they get rid of the "whores"? Will they embrace the whores? Perhaps this word will be taken back, and used as a term of endearment.
As mama looks at her daughter, walking bravely back into schools some day "That's my lil whore." Maybe we're all whores - what a twist.
It's a good picture. One of Scorsese's best. He did direct it right? I think so.
BEST ACTOR -
This one was a close race for me:
Jeanise Jones (Borat 2 - on the right)
This woman, who was not in on the joke, deserves a medal. She's the star.
Joe Exotic (The Tiger King)
Anyone standing behind Trump during those Rona briefings, who can hold a straight face.
Technically, Joe and Jeanise aren't actors, and Trump's people are... you know, TRUMP'S people, so I give the award to Mario Lopez for his role as Sexy Colonel Sanders.
Did y'all watch "A Recipe for Seduction?" It's entertaining. It was my runner-up for MOY.
SHOW OF THE YEAR -
Easy - "The Tiger King" for keeping us all together in the beginning of this 2020 corona mess.
Which leads me to MY person of the year (cuz let's be honest, Uncle Joe and Kamala... no)
The POY is -
Carole Baskin -
We all know that she murdered her husband, and yet she took over Joe's zoo property, continues her animal rights activism while being openly weird as hell, and was last seen being applauded on "Dancing with the Stars".
Only in America.
Animated action of the year - “Soul” for bringing us this negro,
played by Tina Fey :)
I’m just joking ( I love Tina Fey)... well, she does play him, but it’s not like that; still makes me laugh though. At least she didn’t have to worry about blackface.
I like my action flicks. They all can't be tear-jerkers like "WAP".
Which leads us to ACTION HERO OF THE YEAR --- Kiera Allen
If you saw the movie "Run" then you know this actress. She is the acrobatic, wheelchair-bound star of the movie. She is in a wheelchair in real life. In this movie she breaks through one window, climbs across a rooftop, breaks through another window, all with water in her mouth for a special finishing trick to end the scene. And she throws herself down a couple of flights of stairs. Let's see Liam Neeson try to do that!
I'm serious when I say - I expect to see her in the next "Fast & Furious" film.
Award for LEAST FUX GIVEN - Ricky Gervais, for lighting Hollywood on fire.
Athlete - TEAM JLo and Shakira
--- sidelined me (I attempted to dance like Shakira at work) and sent souls to hell
(that's some powerful booty shaking... and or just another example of white people being mad at brown people for existing)
SONG OF THE YEAR -
Vin Diesel’s "Feels like I do" - not up for debate.
Name another action star in 2020 with a single.
Album of the Year - "The Lion King: The Gift / Black is King" - by Beyonce
We didn't feel much like royalty, but at least we were being heard... well, for a lil bit; a lot more than I ever remember us being heard.
Remember when white people in Hollywood felt so much shame that they did this?
We had corporations like the NFL tryna pretend to be woke. Aunt Jemima and that Native American woman on the butter were freed
(though they did keep the land).
White people were afraid, and thought that perhaps this album was going to spark the second coming of Black Jesus.
It's interesting - black people protested (mostly peacefully); wanting justice, and white people got anxious. People started rioting and looting because of injustices rooted to this country's original sin, and white people, who's ancestors committed this sin, shook their heads at us in shame. Black people and anyone (of any color) standing with them were treated as hostiles, while white people with guns, shooting at black people were hailed as heroes.
What a time.
I wish Black Jesus really did come back to these Beyonce tunes.
Oh, and this stuff happened too
Toobin (Ha! This guy )
ASSHOLE OF THE YEAR (4 years straight)-
Trump
It's not even close. I was going to suggest that the dude from "The Vow" being a strong runner up, but even that would be disrespectful to Trump's assholery.
The world was on fire (metaphorically and literally), and Trump as our leader, threw gasoline on it. "BLM" came along to be heard and get justice for George Floyd, and Trump convinced his worshippers that BLM is a terrorist group. He shot away protesters, so he could pose awkwardly with a bible (doing God's work - this “work” included telling us to do the opposite of what physicians around the world plead with us to do during a pandemic, pushing drugs on us that these same physicians say no to, and telling us to inject ourselves with bleach. Hallelujah!). He accused Biden of corruption (pot calling kettle black). He loses to Biden, but fights the results with zero evidence, and at the sore loser rallies, there were stabbings and arrests, to which Trump praises their efforts.
A round of applause for the Michael Jordan of Assholes.
Donald J. Trump!
RESPECT!
Lastly, The Praphie (most coveted of awards)
The nominees are -
Kaylen Ward - raised over one million dollars for the Australia fires relief, by passing out nude photos of herself... yep. Seriously, look it up. Well, maybe don’t do that:)
Michael Jordan - "The Last Dance" was the only sports content for a sports addict like myself. MJ was the drug we needed.
Dr. Fauci - Really for putting up with us.
Dave Chappelle - a hell of a year for him. Plus, he was dropping N-Bombs and smoking on SNL
The Fly on Mike Pence's head.
Kamala Harris
Cardi B - just because
The winner is - Dave Chappelle
Not only for his great year in comedy (in this bleeped up year), but he has evolved into a modern day prophet. Who would have thought that the guy who made "Half Baked"
would be the one we'd seek out when racial tensions got to the highest levels this year??
Kaylen Ward would have won it, if she had continued her efforts. She could have raised some funds for Greta Thunberg. She could have used her nudity along-side protesters, or even joined doctors around the world, raising money for a vaccine. Smh. That's a shame.
In thinking about Chappelle's evolution, I'm reminded that we're all processing and changing as a result of this year. Some will change for the better, and others for the worse. Some will go to the depths only to rise up again. Regardless, of how you handle it, it's important to know who your true peeps are. Who loves you? Who’s got your back? Who do you love? We're all going to need true peeps to help us endure. Which leads me to my slogan for next year.
"If you love something let it go, if it doesn't return to you. Hunt it down and kill it." Idk about you, but that touches my heart.
Enjoy yourselves as much as you can tonight, and by that I mean safely :) Some of you might want to consider going to bed early, just to end this year faster.
Happy New Year, everyone!

What would you say some of your favourite headcanons are? Like... Allergies, favourite foods or w/e. Also, I personally don't get the impression Britt is actually super close with her parents, even if she loves them, even in Canon? Maybe idk. She seemed very embarrassed by them lmao like communicatively close. Whereas Santana is 10, 000% a mama's girl
Oh man..I create so many HCs on the fly I can’t keep track LOL.
I agree about Britt’s relationship with her parents, we were talking about this a little the other week on the Discord. My personal HC is that Britt’s close with her parents but they aren’t exactly the greatest parents in the world. How you have a 0.0gpa? Were her parents not notified or did they just not care? We’ll never know. Then fastforward to Season 6 and Maribel shoots her That Look in the barn which triggers my other HC that Maribel is aware of how little they care about Brittany’s wellbeing and she’s really salty about it. Also could be supported by how she reacted to the news of Brittany not being able to graduate. My HC is that Brittany was always over Santana’s house growing up and became like a second daughter to Maribel and with that title comes the Mama Lopez protection lol. Also, 10000% agree that Santana’s a mama’s girl.

I’m really bored and need a new fic to read. Any new recommendations? I’m already caught up with song of mine
Sure!
(The next line is just vile self-advertising, feel free to skip it =D)
Mine! Here and here
(Ok, here is the real thing, sorry xDD)
Here are my recommendations on the matter, and at the end I’ll put the link for this things on my Drive library, because there are stories that were deleted.
But most of them are on FF.net or Ao3, so, please, PLEASE: go read them and leave a nice review. Just a thank you is enough. But some feedback, please. We are writers, we live from them xDD
COMPLETED
Canon
(It’s) All Chair Parts, by novel_concept26
The whole point of the performance is to look hot as hell, and Santana is doing an awesome job. Too awesome.
Addicted, by SwingingCloud
“It always feels like years- and not just a few, short days- to Santana, whenever Brittany goes away.” Brittana. Marathon!sex. TWO-SHOT! SUMOSMU #9
Barter System, by crammit
Santana accepts a different kind of payment for helping Brittany out of a jam. (Rated M for language and smut)
Breathless!verse, by Swinging Cloud.
Breathless:
Fill for the GKM. “Long, pale fingers wrap tightly around her left wrist, guiding her hand up to push more firmly on Brittany’s throat- telling her that she’s ready- and Santana shivers as her palm presses just below Brittany’s jaw.” Brittana. Breath!play. Obvious smut.
Hypoxia:
Sequel to Breathless. “Brittany’s floored that Santana has come so far- far enough to trust her completely with not just her body, but with her very breath, with her life, and she concentrates hard on what she’s doing as she tightens her arm around Santana’s neck.” Brittana. Breath!play. Obvious smut. SUMOSMU #1
Bluish, by SwingingCloud
“Santana’s had about as much red, white, and blue as she can stand, but this blue- the blue of Brittany’s eyes- she will never have enough of.” Brittana. Sweet!smut. SUMOSMU HOLIDAY SPECIAL.
Dreams!verse, by everdreaming3:
Santana and Brittany’s story from meeting freshman year through their wedding and beyond (cute and fluffy, and filler for all the gaps that Glee left on the start of this story).
Dreams: from Santana’s POV
Dreamcatcher: from Brittany’s POV.
Dreaming in the Future: future one-shot
How to Win Even When You’ve Lost, by crammit
It was only ever you, by LoneGambit.
Brittany and Santana have been dating for a couple years now and have never tried using a strap-on. One night Santana asks Brittany if she misses being with a guy, her answer leaves Santana thinking.
Just a hug between friends, by furryewokazon: (this is actually deleted, but I have a copy if you are interested):
Santana smiled into the hand on her face… Written before ‘Sexy’ based on vague spoilers for that episode.
Keeping things interesting, by your-street-serenade:
How would Santana react if Brittany walked into the room with the new HeMo’s purple hair?
Let Me Take Care of You, by absedarian.
Santana walked through the quiet hallway of McKinley High School. It was late and the school was empty, as empty as she’d ever seen it. They had finished the mash-up several hours ago, but Santana could still feel the tingling in her fingers where she had slapped Finn.
Loved with Inspiration, by jellymankelly:
“A tiny part of her mind marvels at how effortlessly Brittany can reduce her to a stuttering idiot with little more than a look. The rest of her is busy trying to remember how to breathe. And failing.” M for coarse language and sexual themes. Two-shot.
Making the video!verse, by emmanuelles: those were actually deleted, but I can send them to you if someone is interested.
Making the video:
Catching Santana doing something private puts an idea into Brittany’s head. She secretly works out a brilliant three-step plan and manages to execute it. The story of Santana and Brittany making their own private video.
Ain’t no limit for what love allows:
A story about how Santana and Brittany explore their boundaries in bed, how they want to find out more about themselves and each other. Will it not be enough or will they go too far? Will they cross the line?
Mama Lopez!verse, by jerzeyredhead:
Mama Lopez’ rules:
One-Shot. Mama Lopez comes home early and finds Santana and Brittany in a compromising position. Now she has to give them the house rules of dating. T for some course language and sexual situations.
Conversations with Mama Lopez:
This continues “Mama Lopez’ Rules” – the week Santana is grounded and her mother is working from home. Rated T for mature-ish content and some bad language. Post 3x09. A little bit of Brittany, but mostly Santana and her Mama. This is a happy story!
Mama Lopez’ Valentine’s Day Rules:
Santana is planning her first Valentine’s Day date with Brittany. Mama Lopez tries to help and enforce some rules. Continues the adventures from Conversations with Mama Lopez and Mama Lopez’ Rules. Mostly T, but M for later sexy times. This is happy!
Graduating with Mama Lopez:
Santana and Quinn help Brittany with summer school, so Santana and Brittany can go to New York together. Mama Lopez is, as always, there to help. Mostly T, for swearing, but rated M for sweet lady loving in later chapters. Set after 3x22.
Mediterranean Dreams, by Scarlett’s Tara
“A persistent tickling near her ear nudged her into consciousness. When ignoring it failed, Santana twitched the muscles in one side of her face, reluctant to move her heavily relaxed limbs. The motion created a poorly muffled stream of giggles coming from somewhere above her head”.
Mine, by vontramp:
Canon Brittana one-shot based loosely around the lyrics to “Mine,” by Taylor Swift, thanks to Ryan Murphy’s Twitter leaks (beautiful, painful and so real. This is gold).
Missing You, by StraightShark
“And fuck…just thinking about it makes you horny. You miss her so much it’s driving you crazy. You used to be able to have sex with her whenever you wanted- even during school- to satisfy your sexual desire for HER…but now that you’re separated by what seemed like millions of miles it feels like you can barely control yourself”.
Moments, by ifshepromisedyouheaven
“I helped you paint your face, one half red, one yellow. I kissed you quickly, right on the apple of your cheek. You scrunched your nose, that cute smile that says don’t ever stop kissing me. The hard acrylic paint cracked and left ragged lines down your face. Still as beautiful as ever, years after high school, years after college, months after the birth of our son”.
My girlfriends’ sister’s keeper, by bodybroke:
This will basically just be random cute moments of Brittana/Brittany’s little sister Ashley, because I had a lot of fun writing them in that one, and there isn’t enough Brittany’s sister in fics.
No matter where in the sky, by LeighKelly:
“I used to wish on every shooting star for a future with you, and now that future is here, and I know it’s forever.” Following their first argument after moving in together, Brittany and Santana take a trip outside of the city to look at the stars, and remember just how important they’ll always be to one another. Post Season 5. One Shot.
One in a million paradaise, by LeighKelly:
In the middle of their weeklong vacation at the beach, Brittany is surprised by what Santana has planned for their Fourth of July together. One-shot.
Picking up the pieces, by Ebony-Jayne
Brittany is there for Santana after the disastrous coming out to her Abuela and some of Brittany’s own insecurities pop up in the process…Brittana.
Pizza in Louisville, by Scarlett’s Tara
Cheer practice hardly caused her to break a sweat anymore. Perhaps it was years under the wrath of Sue Sylvester. Or maybe that she had always been one of the top three members of the team and given the most complicated parts of their routines. Or likely the fact that the presence of a certain someone made her more inclined to show off.
Taking the long way!verse, by lingeringlilies.
Taking the long way:
Santana’s journey toward self-acceptance through love, loss, friends, career and family. Contains Glee history through “Original Song.” Rated M for sex.
Me and You and Daisies:
“Maybe ‘happily ever afters’ don’t exist. Maybe they’re fragmented and sprinkled throughout our lives to remind us to keep moving forward. Maybe, if we look from the right angle and maneuver the pieces just so, they become a masterpiece we keep adding to until the day we die.” Future fic, Brittana as mothers. Sequel to “Taking the Long Way,” but can stand independently.
Me and You and Daisies: The DVD Extras
One-shots related to the Lopez-Pierce Family as depicted in “Me and You and Daisies”
Through the Dark

It’s a Gleeful Life, by LoneGambit
“…Like the fact that it’s close to Christmas and instead of spending it in Lima with Brittany like I always have, like I really want to, I’ve blown half the money my mami gave me, to follow my dreams, on clothes and gifts and high tailed it to New York City to avoid all previously partaken Christmas traditions at all costs.

Kissing You, by tatyana82
AU- You see, in Santana’s mind, to try and recover from her kind of obsession, the hardest simple thing to do is to stay away from what’s addictive; right now, a kiss from her wife, Brittany, was her hardest simple thing…
Life Changer, by kp83
“She had received a call this morning from her manager saying that she was needed the next day for a final audition for a new mini-series, and if it hadn’t been for a show that she absolutely wanted to be in, she wouldn’t have bothered with the last minute mad-dash to get to New York from Los Angeles”.

Time passes, in love and in seasons, by echoes_of_realities
You were the choice I made before I knew what the other choices were
Summer comes and goes in the quiet moments. It comes and goes in the quiet moments of time passing away from the critical eyes of high school, where they can just be the them that they always are when it’s just Brittany-and-Santana. It comes and goes like a flower unfurling its petals towards the sun in the new beginning of a different sunrise every morning.
Somewhere along the way we must grow up, not perfect, but up and out
Autumn comes and goes in the quiet moments. It comes and goes in the quiet moments of time passing between classes and in secluded hallways, where bravery grows as they fight to protect their love from the clumsy fingers of careless teenagers and smear campaigns and familial rejection. It comes and goes like a golden leaf free falling through the air with its unconscious courage as it leaves everything it knows and throws itself into the unknown for just the chance at love and happiness.
That winter you left me snow-blind
Winter comes and goes in the quiet moments. It comes and goes in the quiet moments of time passing between snowfalls and mistletoe kisses, where they can finally stop holding their breaths and instead bask in the warmth of acceptance despite the winter wind. It comes and goes like lazy Sunday mornings where the alarm clock is a cold nose against skin as snow covers the town in a fresh beginning.

INTRODUCTION

Words for Charles
Good morning.
On behalf of our family, I want to thank you all for being here. Losing a patriarch can be a watershed time for a family and we appreciate the support of our family and friends. The last few months were not easy, but we have a lot to be grateful for: that Daddy was not in pain, that his mind was intact until the very end, and that we were able to be together and say all the things we needed to say. We are also grateful for all of those who were there to support us with prayers and acts of kindness. Special thanks go to Paige Procell and Mrs. Mary Farmer for their help with Daddy’s care.
One unexpected benefit of the last 7 months is that Karla, Cade and I have spent more time together and with Mama and Daddy than since we were kids. We’ve told a lot of stories – plenty that can’t be repeated – and gone through old pictures and we’ve had time to visit with folks who shared stories about Daddy. Like Dolly Parton said, “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” Daddy didn’t want this service to be sad. He wanted us to talk about the good times.
Daddy was born in Rodessa, where Papaw was working in the north Caddo Parish oilfield, on Aug. 26, 1937. He was named Charles after the doctor who delivered him. Daddy was the oldest of seven children and his brothers and sisters always looked up to him. They grew up playing around Lanan Creek, riding horses and hunting squirrels. Mamaw and Papaw Pilcher came from big families so there were always lots of cousins to play with. Daddy remembered the Eisenhower Military Maneuvers and watching what seemed like a thousand horses and cavalry pass in front of his Grandpa Lopez’s house. It was quite a sight for a bunch of country kids.
Daddy always liked music, country music and old time rock and roll, and outlaw country. When he was 14, he bought a guitar at Horn’s Drug Store in Many for $35. He earned the money doing farm work and jobs for his uncles. His friends taught him some chords, but he was mostly self-taught. Daddy and Uncle Wayne used to play music at Mr. Willie Anderson’s place with their friends Kenneth and R.H. Sometimes Daddy would wake us up on Saturday mornings playing ‘Folsom Prison Blues.’ But Daddy lost part of his ring finger in an oilfield mishap and he didn’t play as much after that. I’ll get to that story in a minute.
Daddy went to school at Alliance until the schools consolidated and he went to Negreet where he played right field on the boys softball team and graduated in 1955. He did not have a stellar academic record, but that was no reflection of his intellect. Clay said one time he wondered what Daddy would have done if he had studied business or engineering or both because of his aptitude in those areas. But Daddy didn’t take school seriously as a kid. He was the class clown. Still, he read all the time and was self-educated on a lot of topics. He could figure stuff in his head and seldom forgot facts.
As soon as they finished high school, Daddy and several of his friends went to work on the pipeline, and that work took them all over the U.S. from the Gulf coast to the Midwest, the northeast and western states. He was in Kingman, Arizona, when he joined the Army National Guard and he served with the Guard till after he and Mama were married.
As a young man, Daddy affiliated with the Masonic Lodge at Little Flock and was a 50-year member. His grandfather and great-grandfather on the Pilcher side were also Masons. He was Worshipful Master of the Lodge and president of the Sabine Shrine Club in the year 2000. Mama and Daddy helped organize and volunteered at the annual Shriners Classic basketball tournament and several other events to raise funds for Shriners Children’s Hospital in Shreveport. He also really enjoyed riding in the parades.
Daddy liked cars and his first car was a 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria, black and white. Bonnie and Connie said Daddy would get them to wash his car and pay them a quarter each. You can imagine Charles as a young man, a good-looking guy cruising around in a cool car. He was probably pretty freewheeling in those days. And then he started dating Sarah Walker.
On July 1, 1961, Mama and Daddy eloped to Jasper, Texas. They were married over 60 years. To celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, they had a ceremony to renew their vows, and we celebrated their 50th anniversary with a big family gathering.
Speaking of gatherings, Mama and Daddy hosted a lot of big get-togethers, the Lopez reunion and the Pilcher reunion for many years. One year they threw a big Christmas party and folks from all sides of the family were there. That’s the year Daddy bought himself a karaoke machine and entertained the crowd with Elvis songs.
Y’all know my Mama and Daddy are two of the hardest working people around. During his long career in the oilfield, Daddy worked all over Louisiana and Texas, in the Middle East, the North Sea, South America and the Gulf of Mexico. As a young man supporting a wife and child, Daddy worked as many shifts as he could. He was working on a land rig out of Many when his hand got caught in a chain that took off part of his finger. Trying to drive himself to town, Daddy’s truck got stuck, so he had to get the come-alongs and pull his truck out of the mud to get himself to the doctor.
Aunt Bobbie asked me to share something. In 1974, she and Uncle Tommy were living in Abu Dhabi where he was working, when Uncle Tommy had a heart attack and died. Daddy was also working in the United Arab Emirates. He left his job and went to help Aunt Bobbie and accompanied her back to the U.S. with Uncle Tommy’s remains and my cousin Tom Tom, who was about 11 years old at the time.
Back in the gulf, Daddy was a senior toolpusher / OIM for Penrod for many years and experienced more than one well blowout offshore. On March 1, 1979, a blowout on a production platform took the lives of eight workers. Daddy and the rest of the crew escaped in a survival capsule. Like all oilfield families, we had to adjust our holidays so we could celebrate when he was at home. He missed a lot of Christmases, graduations and birthdays.
Daddy also raised cattle on the side and spent most of his off time off occupied with the farm, messing with the cows, cutting hay and fixing fence. It gave us a great childhood. Daddy was a strong man who stayed fit doing manual labor, tinkered on cars, trucks and tractors and he could fix just about anything. He always figured out how to do things for himself.
I mentioned our large family. Our generation has lots of cousins, too, and they loved to come to our house in Zwolle. Laura and Colleen told about how when they lived in Franklin, Daddy would pick them up on his way home from work to come stay with us. Laura, who was in about 8th grade at the time, would drive home -- in the company car -- while Daddy slept in the back seat. Uncle Charles taught several of his nieces and nephews how to drive, swim, ride motorcycles and shoot guns.
After Daddy retired from the oilfield, he and Mama had a lot more time for leisure. They got in with a local RV group and took several trips to different parts of the country. Daddy was not much of a dancer, but Mama got him to join a square dancing group for a while. After they had the camp they got involved with the Toledo Bend Lake Association and they made many, many friends with other retirees on the lake. Daddy was a board member of TBLA and was instrumental in establishing the annual Bass Unlimited program, their biggest fundraiser. He also looked after his brothers Jerry and Stan when they became unable to take care of themselves.
Mama and Daddy bought their camp at Lanan in the 90s and it’s actually located where Grandma and Grandpa Lopez’s place was before the lake came in. In 2006, the state of Louisiana paid Mama and Daddy for their house in Zwolle, where they had lived since 1970, and it was torn down to make way for the four-laning of Hwy. 171. That’s when Mama and Daddy built their house at Lanan. The joke at the time was that Mama was going to live in the new house and Daddy was going to live in the camp.
Mama Sarah and Papa Charles enjoyed their grandkids and kept them all pretty often. They took the kids out to the farm, out on the lake, took them to airshows, to movies, to the sale barn. Last Christmas Claire compiled a book of memories called “Tales from the Grandkids.” Some of the common memories are of Pop’s crazy antics and silly pranks he would play to get Mama Sarah’s goat. They wrote about swimming, camping, fishing, flying kites, playing dominoes and Papa Charles teaching them to drive in the pasture. They talked about one time when Pop jumped in the pool with all his clothes on. They thought it was hilarious! They never forgot it. When Karla and her family lived in Coteau, Daddy would stop at their house and surprise Claire and Joey with donuts and one time they met him in Amelia and he let them on the rig.
Gracyn wrote about going out on the barge with Pop in the evenings, looking up at the sky, looking for the North Star and the constellations, some that were real and some that were made up.
Cale said “as we got older, our fun outings turned into work outings: working cows, working in the hayfield, working on equipment and helping Mama Sarah move things in her house.”
Chas had an interesting conversation with Pop about the creation of Toledo Bend. He told Chas about the farmland, now underwater, in front of their house that had belonged to the Pilchers, the gas station in Sabine Town where he used to get gas because it was the cheapest, ferries that went across the Sabine River and how the water just seemed to creep up and it didn’t take long for the land he grew up on to be completely under water. Chas said, “I felt this was the reason they built the house where they did, so he’d be able to look out on what was once his childhood.”
The boys also wrote about how much it meant for Mama Sarah and Pop to attend all their ballgames. Mama and Daddy went to see three of their grandsons play football in the Super Dome.
Then, the great-grands came along. Karly and Joseph best remember Pop cracking jokes, playing pranks to drive Mama Sarah crazy and Pop slipping them some cash on the sly. Olivia and Lily Kate obviously have fewer memories but Claire said Olivia was in Walmart one day and started yelling at a man with gray hair and a plaid shirt that she thought was Papa Charles. She said “Come back! I hold you!” I hope that Olivia and Lily Kate will remember Papa Charles before he got sick, our last Easter and the last Father’s Day. And our family keeps growing. A couple of weeks ago, Joey and Katie Facetimed Pop to tell him he was going to be great grandpa again.
One other little about Daddy is he had a sweet tooth. He loved ice cream, Hershey bars, M&Ms and he often used the grandkids as an excuse to go get a blizzard from Dairy Queen. Walker Roe said that one time Pop ordered a blueberry blizzard for Clayton, knowing he wouldn’t like it, so Pop conveniently ate the whole thing.
In recent days, Mama and Daddy lived quietly. Daddy enjoyed watching NASCAR, football and basketball. They watched Jeopardy every day. In the last seven months, Mama hardly left Daddy’s side and he received the best care possible because of her. She said it was the closest time of their marriage.
Daddy was a character. Anything he said was completely unvarnished. He never sugarcoated anything. Uncle Jim said Daddy got his smark-alecky nature from our Papaw Pilcher and that gene is quite persistent in our family. We’ve shared a lot of laughs telling hilarious stories about Pop. He wasn’t a saint. He wasn’t a regular churchgoer until his retirement years. When he was working in Brazil, he had a life endangering experience that precipitated his profession of faith. Gracyn said he often told her that she should always go to church and tithe faithfully. During his illness Mama and Daddy read a prayer card and said a special prayer every night.
There’s about a dozen other stories we wanted to tell today, but time runs short. However he was referred to, Charles, Bubba, C.L. (whenever anybody was mad at him), Daddy, Papa Charles, Uncle Charles or Pop, he was one of a kind.
The last few weeks were agonizing. But we looked for the blessings. This past Sunday was a beautiful sunny day. Daddy took his last breath surrounded by his wife, his children and his brother and sisters. We prayed over him and he slipped away, surrounded by love. And this is how God works: Brother Tony showed up about 10 minutes later. He was stopping by to check on us after church and his timing was perfect. He prayed with us and he said, “Death is not always a tragedy.” I’m not sad that Daddy left that old body. That’s not how I will remember him anyway. I’ll remember the guy who would walk on his hands up and down the hall to entertain the kids.
I’ll close with a passage of scripture that a friend shared with me recently. It’s also printed on the back of your bulletin.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
God rest your soul, Daddy. We love you.

“Power Bald” Male Celebrities – How Shaved Heads Became Trendy in 2021
Shrek is an iconic power bald head. Likewise RuPaul, host of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. But at the moment they are far from alone in their glittering splendor. Travis Barker is currently Kourtney Kardashian’s bald friend. Sean Evans is the powerful bald man from Hot Ones, while Stanley Tucci’s effortless Gravitas in Searching for Italy is just hot. And don’t forget the bald domination franchise, Fast & Furious, which features the glorious hairless heads of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson and Vin Diesel. This month Gibson and Diesel shine again with F9 in theaters.
Welcome to the world of power bald heads, a hectic but hairless community in upheaval. In fact, the summer of 2021 could just be a peak balding season, with Adam Levine hugging the hairless self-care style, four times the strongest man in the world, Brian Shaw looking slick lifting a Hyundai SUV in a car commercial. and the WWE Braun Strowman alias Adam Scherr, who posts particularly intoxicating workouts on Instagram.
For the uninitiated, power balding is an emerging movement by men who have shaved off their insecurities about being bald. While baldness has always been around, a new cultural shift, both on and off screen, has shown the power of focusing on simple, sleek appearance. One that allows value and beauty to be defined by principles other than the lush mane or the uniformity of its brush cuts.

To be clear, power baldnesses aren’t Homer Simpsons. You will happily part with these two remaining hairs to hug their sleek heads. They’re not Voldemorts either. Your baldness is not the result of too much toxic masculinity. In fact, some of the most honorable power bald people are not men at all. Dora Milaje from Black Panther embodies the term, as does Sinéad O’Connor. As is Gossip Girl’s newest queen bee, Julien Calloway, played by Jordan Alexander. A bald head has power. They are proud of that. But above all, they try to handle it responsibly.
“Somebody who is power-bald is about the self-confidence in which you carry yourself,” says Roger Bennett, co-host of the TV show and podcast Men in Blazers, along with his “smooth guy” Michael Davies Men’s Health.
The two Britons who live in the US are the unofficial architects of the term power bald, if for no other reason than that there are few documents online that are said by anyone else. They have been using the term since around 2016, which still makes it an insider term. There are few Instagram hashtags or Reddit mentions. Urban Dictionary has no related entries.

But for Men in Blazers and their nearly 231,000 Twitter followers, the term is canonical. Bennett says they have received hundreds of letters related to baldness since talking about it on their platforms. They often give their favorite smooth footballers like Pep Guardiola and Zinedine Zidane the title “Power Bald”. “It’s probably the only thing that really binds us apart from our love of football and America,” says Bennett.
As a “third generation bald guy” Bennett had no choice but to appreciate his thinning hairline. Balding had always felt inevitable to him, so he decided to accept that. By doing this and speaking openly about it, he has turned what might otherwise feel like a source of shame into something more empowering.

In fact, Bennett takes so much pride in being a power bald man that he questions the implications of certain sports characters battling the aftermath. In 2016, former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher appeared on billboards and in testimonials for Restore, a hair transplant company. If you’ve been driving the toll road to O’Hare Airport outside of Chicago in the past few years, you’ve likely seen an Urlacher billboard with new turf on its head. Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders also became speakers for Restore along with other famous retired athletes.
Overcoming one’s insecurities is a battle that neither muscle mass nor IQ can win, and men should be able to change their looks as they please. But there is a far cheaper and bolder move. “People, actually [go bald] with incredible bragging rights, these are the characters we’ve always hailed as Power Bald, ”says Bennett.

At the same time, too much is being invested in treating baldness to completely normalize it, even if it is normal. Hair restoration remains a cornerstone of the male beauty industry. Toupees have gone viral and have been rebranded as trendy hair replacements. Hims, a digital health startup, recently valued at $ 1.6 billion and spokespersons for ex-married couple Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriquez, got involved selling prescriptions for hair loss (and erectile dysfunction) Names.
It may seem easier and cheaper to simply shave everything off than the headache of finding the most appropriate hair regrowth solution, but this is a huge commitment in its own right. “The easy solution to shaving your head is not an easy solution,” said Spencer Kobren, founder of the American Hair Loss Association, a private organization committed to raising public awareness of the emotional impact of hair loss on men .
Kobren told the New York Times in 2019 that he has been using finasteride, a drug used to treat hair loss, for 25 years. (It’s worth noting that finasteride, also known under the brand name Propecia, can have notable side effects.) “I wish everyone could be confident enough to shave their hair and not worry,” Kobren told Men’s Health. “That would be incredible, but there are just so many different components that the guys are uncomfortable with.”
For many, the act of baldness proudly appears to be one of the final refusals in the body positivity movement, a crusade that men are historically reluctant to accept. No wonder: men don’t know how to talk about their bodies. “How do we create security as men?” Psychiatrist Drew Ramsey, MD says. “Great chest. Big arms. Nice hair. Is that what it means to be a safe, mature man? “
The answer is a resounding no, but our culture would tell us otherwise. Take bald jokes like those recently raised on Prince William and LeBron James. They are still not considered taboo. The “joke” here is the Samson complex. A fear that, like biblical character, once you lose your hair, your strength, virality, and agency will all be lost.

But one look at some of Hollywood’s biggest action stars and iconoclastic athletes proves the Samson complex is a bust. LL Cool J made balding (and fedoras and bucket hats) cool. Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Mike Tyson have proven that strength is not tied to hair. Gandhi showed that strength arises in the head, not what is shown externally. And Mr. Clean has proven it can be squeaky clean.
There is even a YouTube channel called BaldCafe that produces sincere videos of guys shaving everything off that have gone viral and have millions of views. However, apart from the Fast and Furious crew, the power shift in Hollywood is not moving fast enough.
According to data compiled by media analytics firm The Streaming Graduate, the bald portrayal in narrative films and on television falls into three main categories: villains (Thanos, Darth Maul), action stars (Bruce Willis, Briton Bruce Willis aka Jason Statham), and cowards (Tobias Fünke, George Costanza). Often these archetypes intersect like the mischievous but clumsy Frank in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia or the weak and sinister Gollum from Lord of the Rings.

Sarah-Mikal, director of analytics and strategy at Streaming Graduate, says you rarely see bald actors in romance or family films. The main exceptions are The Rock, Vin Diesel, and Dave Bautista, who have all starred in at least one kid-friendly action comedy. (Belated justice for the pacifier.)
Some pioneers of the power bald head are slowly penetrating the world of male modeling. Ben Whit is a London-based plus-size model who featured in a 2019 campaign for British men’s clothing retailer Jacamo. “I’m more of a niche market,” he says. “Since the plus-size industry is still so small at the moment, it is more difficult to find work.”
Although the market for whit has recently cooled (losing modeling due to the pandemic certainly didn’t help), it is focused on changing the perception of what baldness can look like, be it on Instagram, in interviews, or in fashion spreads. He hopes that “more men will realize, ‘I don’t really have to look like this …” [the standard model] be happy. He’s happy the way he looks and I look just like him. ‘”
This content is imported from Instagram. You may find the same content in a different format or more information on their website.
Like Whit, Bennett doesn’t view balding as a personal defect, even though it can often feel like we’re supposed to believe it. “Going bald can be a deep emotional trauma for a person,” says Bennett. But it doesn’t stay in that headspace. He refuses.
For him, it’s not his upcoming memoirs (Re) born in the USA or Men in Blazers that will be his legacy. It is co-coin and actively lives the term power bald. “Even if my own family has forgotten my name for several generations, I can look up or down… wherever I end up… and just know that if this is my contribution to the world, then it is worthwhile to approach one carve tombstone, ”he says. “I have to get myself a bigger tombstone than I imagined.” Well, this is a powerless move.

Say hello to little Nela. A 5 yr old immigrant who didn't speak English. A little girl who spent the first three months of Kindergarten crying because she was placed in a glass booth with headphones on during ESOL, as she slowly learned the English language. Scared and sad to be left alone every day in an environment where she couldn't communicate with anyone. Harassed and mocked by her peers in the process. My first two words were cat and bathroom. But that was just the beginning. With two incredibly hard working immigrant parents by my side, I found the strength, courage, and love to conquer many more dreams since. Ten years of performances on stage with the Rockville Ballet Company. The first freshman on the University of MD dance team. A University of MD Dean's Scholar, graduating cum laude. Writing, hosting, and producing my own television show at 20 years of age. FUSE's original VJ, hosting a 5 yr. live show across from Madison Square Garden. Radio stints on LA's KLSX and NY's KTU. The first female sideline reporter for ESPN's WSOP coverage. The first Latina on ESPN's college football roadshow. The first Latina to cover NASCAR. Host of NBC's Poker After Dark, and FoxSport's World Poker Tour. Host of MTV's Top Pop Group with Mario Lopez, VH1's Dance Cam Slam, and my own beach series on Travel Channel. Host of ESPN's first late night sports entertainment show, UNITE. Creator of The Fuddhist and Tiny Food Explorers. Here I am. But my first great accomplishment was graduating Kindergarten. That was my tipping point. As I proudly held up my diploma for Dad, with my fierce mama by my side; I knew I could accomplish anything. Whatever dreams you have, fervently, and fearlessly pursue them. #TheFuddhist #InternationalWomensDay #WomenEmpowerment #Immigrant #FollowYourDreams #Believe #Goals #Courage #Happiness #Relentless #Passion #Focus #HardWork #Love #GirlsRule (at East Silver Spring Elementary)

Conversations | Kyle Lopez
“You owe it to yourself to entrust your art to those who will advocate for it above and beyond an initial acceptance or feature.“
We are excited to interview Kyle Lopez, a Cuban-American poet who just joined New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) as the REDC Fellow, NYFA Learning. Lopez is also a graduate student who looks forward to growing as an arts administrator while supporting NYFA’s programming. Learn more about Lopez’s (pen name Kyle Carrero Lopez) eclectic professional background.
NYFA: Can you tell us about your connection with Cuba and recent projects there?
Kyle Lopez: I come from a Cuban-American family. My father was born in Cuba, while my mother was born to Cuban parents in North Jersey. Thus, I decided to commit part of my time in college to learn more about my heritage via lenses of political science, literature, and Africana studies. This piqued my interest in U.S.-Cuba relations and Santería, which my mother’s side of the family practices. I first traveled to Cuba in 2017 after applying for a literature-focused fellowship from CubaOne, an organization that provides Cuban-Americans with educational trips to Cuba. This time in and around Havana drove me to continue engaging with Cuba beyond the trip, and in February 2020, after months of mission-building and itinerary preparation, I led CubaOne’s first trip with an entirely Afro-Cuban focus alongside two other CubaOne alumni, Vanessa Navarro and Haidee Suarez. With the help of Beyond Roots, a Cuban-founded venture focused on highlighting Afro-Cuban culture, we and the chosen fellows visited major sites of Black history and culture in Cuba, while also having crucial cross-cultural conversations on racial discrimination in both Cuba and the U.S.
NYFA: You’ve gotten many job opportunities since arriving in New York City. Can you share some of your career strategies with our readers?
KL: The first work opportunity I had upon moving to New York City three years ago was with Studio One Eighty Nine, a sustainable fashion brand based in Ghana and the U.S. I had some background working in fashion before then, so I hoped to keep that going. My strategy was to e-mail brands whose values aligned with mine and see if there might be room for me to get involved. I reached out to One Eighty Nine at the right time, and they got me involved in the production team for their Spring/Summer 2018 presentation at New York Fashion Week. I stayed in contact with them from there on, working pop-up events or writing product descriptions for the site. My other early opportunities, like performing in Tania Bruguera’s Untitled (Havana, 2000) at MoMA and my stint in copywriting at an ad agency, came my way largely because I made it known that I was job-hunting by posting on social media and emailing people in my network. I also asked certain contacts who had experience in the roles I was applying for for feedback on cover letters and resume drafts, which they were happy to advise me on. The main takeaway for me has been that people want to help you as much as they can, so though it can feel like a solo task, it definitely isn’t and shouldn’t be.
NYFA: As a literary artist, what advice do you have for artists that want to meet editors and spread the word about their work?
KL: Coming into my MFA program at New York University, I felt some pressure right off the bat to catch up with poets in the program who’d already published work in big places. As time went on, however, I realized that the program’s writers were at a variety of stages in their artistic development, so it didn’t really make sense to compare myself to others. Instead, I shifted my mentality toward being in community with my fellow writers and celebrating their successes just as much as if they were my own, which has really changed the game for me. With less pressure to snag publications as fast as possible, I’ve been able to focus more on ensuring that what I do put out there comes when it’s ready. It’s also become a priority of mine to work with people who go that extra mile in the editorial process, like Madeleine Mori from the Pigeon Pages team, who pushed back on my tendency to sometimes over-edit while explaining why the first version of a poem of mine she chose was working so well. If you encounter a particular artist’s work in a journal or magazine that you really enjoy, don’t be afraid to get in contact with them and ask what their experience of working with the editors was like. You owe it to yourself to entrust your art to those who will advocate for it above and beyond an initial acceptance or feature.
About Kyle Lopez An experienced writing tutor, copy editor, and program coordinator, Lopez is excited to apply the skills he’s developed over time toward helping artists navigate the challenges of the working artist’s life as the NYFA Learning Team’s Program Fellow. He received a BA degree in English and Interdisciplinary Studies from the College of William & Mary in 2017, and currently attends New York University’s Creative MFA degree program, where he is a Goldwater Fellow. His poetry is published or forthcoming in Hobart, Poetry Magazine, The Cincinnati Review, The Journal, and elsewhere, and he has recently performed at La MaMa Galeria for History/OurStory, at Fahimi in Berlin for the Domicilium reading series, and as featured reader at the Boston Poetry Slam. He lives in Brooklyn.
We’re also excited to welcome Sarah Overton, a former intern who is rejoining NYFA as the REDC Fellow, Development. Overton is currently pursuing her MA degree in Performing Arts Administrationn at New York University. A passionate community collaborator and cellist, Overton has served on boards and committees for the Timucua Arts Foundation, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, and United Arts of Central Florida, and performed as principal cellist for Classern Quartet.
