Mean Girls on West End

It's very fun, but ever so slightly lacklustre (I know I'm not the first person to say that about this musical but eh whatever).

IDK how thought-through casting Gretchen and Karen as WOC while Regina and Cady are white are, but it worked for me! Added an interesting layer to the dynamics, especially with Gretchen. 'What's Wrong With Me?', I've seen palyed for laughs, but this production made it absolutely heartbreaking and she very much made her natural hair a part of it with 'my body, my face, my hair'. BABY.

Pretty sad that they cut the Plastics medley verse in Meet the Plastics - it's such a brilliant little piece of songwriting and I absolutely love it as a trope in musicals :( Also, they cut the whole of Fearless, Do This Thing and the first Stupid with Love (OK I guess :/) but also Stop! Criminal. Damian was an absolute scene-stealer and deserved to have that kept in. I guess they wanted to make the second half shorter but c'mon!

Finally, Janice was brilliant and adorable. They did a good job of making her look truly an outsider and a weird little lesbian with a mullet and a giant T-shirt and funky awkward dance moves. It worked a lot better than the objectively stunning and graceful Auli'i Cravalho, in my opinion. Like yeah, don't tone down the reasons why she's bullied and celebrate her being herself anyway!

Is Harriet Watson the only actress to cover all 6 queens in the exact same costume? I don’t think she had any variations?

A few others also reached swingo with just one costume variation:

Grace Mouat (only during the UK Tour), Courtney Stapleton, Collette Guitart (eventually got variations but originally debuted all six queens with her original skirt), Harriet Watson

Quite a number of other queens also only had one variation but didn’t wind up debuting all the queens.

The History of Swingo, Part 1: The Original

(1) Grace Mouat: the woman, the myth, the legend. Grace was the ONLY alternate/swing for the original (pre-West End) UK tour and was the first to wear the black alt costume. She debuted all 6 roles in just over a month, beginning with Aragon on 7/19/18 and finishing with Boleyn on 8/21/18. She then transferred with the principal cast to the West End, where she was joined by two more alternates: Courtney Stapleton and Vicki Manser (who will be covered in the next installment). Grace was originally first cover S/H, but swapped a cover with Courtney after a few months to A/H instead, with second covers B/S and third C/P. Unlike the other two original West End alts, Grace did not perform as all six queens on the West End; she never went on for Parr. Since Six, Grace's career has skyrocketed— she understudied Juliet in & Juliet, played Pilar in Legally Blonde, starred as Ella in Cinderella, and is currently performing as Karen in Mean Girls. And those are just the highlights!

Fun Fact: Grace is the only person to have worn the pre-West End black alt costume, and is one of only two (with Mallory Maedke) to wear the updated miniskirt version.
