This might be kinda niche but does anyone remember how Kaiba was straight up being blamed for what happened to Gozoboro??? Like he literally had someone run up to him and start yelling saying he, a child, killed Gozoboro… like that’s so insane to me

I have such a soft spot for self-cest for depressed/self-depricating characters.
Yes, please, go back in time to the version of you that made your worst mistakes and kiss them.
Find yourself in your worst moment and remind yourself that you are loved.
Reach out to your future self who lived through all your attempts to the contrary and find something to admire about who they became.
A moment of happiness that only you can give yourself. Yes, you did that. You're worth it.
It's just such a satisfying visual representation for those first emotional steps of caring about your person, your self, your being. I adore it.
#yes this is about william james moriarty why do you ask?#oh because you thought it might also be about seto kaiba?#correct again#yes i know hes not depressed in the same way will is depressed#but i feel like every time i have seen this trope used for him there is plenty of trauma related to sense of self (usually gozoboro's fault#that this can still address and have a similar vibe#and honestly it still very much vibes for him#selfcest

What do you think of gozoboro Kaiba as a villain.
He works way better as a posthumous shadow and psychological scar still shaping the kaibros behavior long after he's gone than he does as a real villain. Virtual World is really good (particularly as an example of Gozaburo's shadow and legacy still affecting all three Kaiba kids), but it sort of loses the wind in its sails as soon as Gozaburo shows up in the virtual flesh. He's scary because of the way he still looms so large long after the boys have ostensibly escaped his influence, and actually meeting him is somewhat anticlimactic and beside the point.

Besides the Orichalcos Arc, this has got to be my favorite. It superbly depicts the heavy past of the Kaiba brothers and implements that just because they grew into wealth, doesn't mean that they had an easy life. It also depicts just how abandoned and forgotten Noah truly was by Gozoboro. It was unfair to him, and it was unfair to Kaiba. I just wish there was maybe a bonding moment between Seto and Noah, maybe a hint of true forgiveness between the two. I'm glad we got to see a bit of it with Mokuba and Noah. :')
IM GOING TO START EATING CONCRETEEEEEEEEEEE VIRTUAL WORLD HAS NO RIGHT TO MAKE ME CRY AS HARD AS IT DOES

Yugioh S3 Ep 11 pt 2: Seto Discovers Vulture Capitalism
Where were we on this arc that ended up being hella longer than I thought it would be? Oh yeah, Last we left the crew, Tristan’s body, now possessed by Nezbitt, was just racing away with Mokuba. This kid gets abducted so often, it’s never occurred to me that anyone in this show would think this is weird. So, when Noah showed up to intervene with actual common sense it was a good bit of whiplash for me.
It’s like the same whiplash I got back when Noah attempted to forfeit a rigged game (for the first time in this entire series). Like I get that Noah is the villain, but how is the evil kid way better at this common sense thing than...a lot of people who’ve been on this show? Not that Noah’s always smart, of course, he still doesn’t seem totally with it on a lot of things (like interior design, which we will get to in a sec) but wow. Noah actually called out this entire show with “Really? Mokuba? Again?”
And so you know what that means? We get to see Noah’s sweet pad in this VR world where Noah could have created anything. Literally anything. To start, he made himself a fireplace with a tiny tiny stack of wood (pretty sure Noah might not know how fires work) and...some sort of...curse on the mantle.
Maybe the mantle couldn’t read the typeface that Noah wanted to use on the mantle?
The rest of the room is just this. Just this.
You know what this no-walls aesthetic SUPER reminds me of?
Pocket Camp. Like this just looks like a Pocket Camp set up to me. In fact...I’m pretty sure I can make almost this exact room in Pocket Camp.
Noah’s just inviting Mokuba over with the bare minimum of ugly ass furniture he needs to have a person over at his campsite he pretends is a house while he waits patiently for the real version of Animal Crossing to come to Switch.
Leichter has an accent that is very old-fashioned Americana and doesn’t wholly make sense in the context of him living in urban Japan, like there’s a whole story there I’d be curious about. But most likely, they were probably trying to cover up the fact that they were using the same 5 voice actors by having him pull out the Clark Gable impression.
And then Seto did not use a Blue Eyes as his deck Master. Instead he used....this guy.
This is a lot of guy to take in. I...I don’t like it.
During this duel we get a Seto Kaiba flashback--and it’s an honest flashback this time, no clones are going to show up and reenact this performance, this is just a straight up flashback.
We’re transported back to Gozoboro’s long buffet table. He really, really loves this thing. It’s like the only place he and his kids ever seem to hang out. Surprised Mokuba and Seto don’t need glasses after squinting so hard to see their own Father for so many years. Also surprised Mokuba and Seto even know what their Dad looks like up close.
Anyways, he sits down at the table and shouts really loudly so it can reach the other side of the room.
Also, just gonna bring this up, we’ve only seen one other guy obsessed with long tables--let me do some digging to a S1 cap, one sec:
Maybe this is just what evil Dads who wear Salmon do? They get hella long tables to seat their 0 friends and just sit at one of the ends and monologue until something important happens. I mean y’all know how much I love this storyboarder but boy they have a thing for villains and long tables.
Anyways, back to Season 3.
(bro’s telling me he does not know about Thoroughly Modern Millie and like can you believe neither Hulu or Netflix has that musical? I mean that musical is problematic as hell, as is all Broadway but maybe I want to watch some 1920′s dancing.)
Anyways, cue Gozaboro shuffling in a comedically large pile of money on a very small pushcart. About 1,099,520,000.00 Yen’s worth. But the show will simplify it for the Americans.
This episode of Yugioh was made around 2002, and this just followed the .com bubble bursting in California. (and before that happened, it was preceded by a recession in Japan that affected the .com bubble quite a bit) For those here who were not born yet and do not remember this happening, this was like, pretty horrifying. I grew up in the Bay where 90% of everyone still works in tech, so I remember that after the bubble burst there were kids in our school who’s parents used to have great salaries and a steady income, who suddenly had to pick up shifts at Starbucks to get back on their feet.
So, it’s interesting that we have this kid’s show basically showing us point blank what Vulture Capitalism is and how it works. You’d think this business stuff would normally go over kid’s heads, but at the time, I think a lot of kids wanted to know what happened to their families but maybe didn’t understand it?
So Kaiba is gonna get into investing all of a sudden, which is kind of weird, mostly because it involved no playing cards. Also because this happened:
Yeah, what? He’s apparently not even adopted yet, which means Seto could still turn around and tell the News that he beat Gozaboro in a match but, I guess that old threat has aged out.
It’s inferred that Seto’s been living here like for several years now. You’d think this guy would list some dependents just for the tax cuts, but nah, Gozaboro just shoved these two into the gigantic 5000 sq ft closet under the stairs of his huge mansion and forgot about them for a couple years.
So, armed with money that is printed on single Yen bills and being pushed around Kaiba in a little tiny cart, Seto has to formulate a plan. Problem is, his business skills include a.) beating up other orphans b.) doing math pretty good and c.) playing cards.
When Seto is like “I don’t care what the company sells, just get me a company to buy” that’s like a straight reference to the .com bubble, but minus the complicated stock market stuff.
For the kid’s in the room that don’t know a thing about this era, tech companies were being created en masse, and because the internet was new and exciting, all of their worth was in their stock rather than in their products--if they even had a product. Mostly they just had big overreaching ideas they were pretty sure would make them all millionaires. But the product didn’t really matter since no one ever reads any numbers when all they plan to do is turn around and immediately sell anyway. They just assumed that if they put on the pressure, they would drive up the value, and would sell before anyone figured out it was all worthless.
This actually worked for so many years, up until people at the top all started demanding real money from the people at the bottom, much like how Seto needed 100 million dollars ASAP from an unsuspecting...whatever company this was. Vulture Capitalism at it’s finest, expecting exponential and unrealistic growth from any company, and if, the growth isn’t met, just selling the whole damn thing after driving every employee to the hospital for overwork.
Now, normally Vulture Capitalism is only if an investor buys a struggling company intending to sell directly afterwards, but since Seto made them struggle like immediately after purchasing, I think we can still call this that.
(And we still do this to this day, PS, we’ve learned nothing from the .com crash.)
This really bad child’s outfit is my favorite Mokuba outfit. I mean...it’s so bad. No wonder Mokuba was picked on so often as a child, wow. He’s like a late-80′s news anchor.
Also, I have NO idea how Seto got any money back so quickly. That doesn’t...totally make sense. But, this is a kid’s show and we have to simplify this whole thing into a sensible package. I mean there’s way more to the whole .com problem but...this show wasn’t literally doing a .com...just a really heavy reference to it.
And much like how people valued stock more than what companies actually were, Seto’s value was a lot of the same. His worth to his Father wasn’t that of a son, it was entirely held up in potential dollar signs. To Gozaboro, Seto's nothing more than a small company he’ll extort straight into...a more emotional type of bankruptcy. Framed alongside the .com crash, this is sort of like, ah, I see what you’re doing, Yugioh. The way Seto was screwing this company was the same way he was already screwed. It’s basically all he knows, and it is a lot of heavy handed foreshadowing.
Anyway, Seto destroyed a company with 10 mill, which is nothing compared to the amount of money vulture capitalists toss around nowadays.
The Big 5 may have honestly done a better job raising Kaiba than Gozoburo since this guy acted as an advisor rather than a boss, but it’s a very, very low bar these boys have set and so far, very few adults have met it. All you have to do is just try and not kill them and you’re already better than all of Kaiba’s father figures.
With the exception of Roland, of course. Youknow, other than Grandpa, Roland is like the only good Dad on this show. Never thought Roland would look like such a shining star. Man, Roland better not screw everyone over or I will be so disappointed in him.
Anyways, the Yugi crew found a fully fueled truck from Soviet Era Russia buried in one of those warehouses.
They censor so much stuff that gives away that Yugioh is from another country, and they kept in the 3-wheeler pickup? As if any North American child would have any idea what they’re looking at right now? Maybe they just assumed we’d think it was sci-fi?
Also, then this happened?
...OK then.
Not sure how Satellite Laser works outside the context of VR. But, at least here in the VR Zone, we can send a Satellite Laser into space because...Space exists here? In VR?
This world is weirdly very small but also very big at the same time. It’s like Katamari.
Anyway, that’s all for this episode, next episode we find out if Kaiba will hack a laser for the second time in this series. Also we find out if Joey can jump a sonic-the-hedgehog broken highway with a 3-wheeled European-as-hell Pickup Truck.
Also...close enough?
Pocket camp really needs more yellow sleeveless puff jackets.
And here’s a link to read the recaps in Chrono order from Ep1 S1

kind of a random thought but-
seto kaiba is not just mokubas big bro, but basically mokubas dad too
mahaad is not just manas teacher, but also basically her dad/big bro
its really interesting the parallels between them if you think about it- both mokuba/mana idolize seto/mahaad, who are both very ‘powerful’ in their own ways, and both mokuba/mana would not think twice about doing w/e seto/mahaad asked
makes me wonder how much differently mokuba could have turned out if the kaibas hadnt been screwed over by the orphanage and gozoboro- like S0 mokuba wouldnt have been a murderous little gangster, right?
(seto was going to be an ass regardless if his past life is anything to go by)
but less of an ass maybe?
idk, maybe im just seeing stuff that isnt there /shrug

Does anybody know how Yugi got the Dark Magician??? Does it show in the manga?
For some reason I have this idea that the Dark Magician would be given to him as a gift by Kaiba of all people because I want to write a fic that might be more AU despite me wanting to make it Cannon compliant to have everyone in the gang, and by that I mean Yugi, Joey, Triston, Tea, and Kaiba meeting each other or being stuck in detention with each other BEFORE they or rather most of them become friends.
Now I know it’s likely that Kaiba might still be cruel Kaiba because at this point he’s gone through a lot of Gozaboro’s abuse. He’s 14-15 here, so it’s been 2 years, so the likelihood of him caring about anyone that doesn’t have anything to do with his vendetta with Gozoboro would be beyond his raydar that and it’s implied at this point he’s kind of stopped caring for Mokuba. Or maybe not stop caring but idk I guess I’m thinking there was a part of him thinking about Mokuba but then I’m not familiar with the manga version of Kaiba. I know the manga version actually did kind of tried to kill his brother.
Well this version is a combination of both manga, anime and abridged. Yes I was going for comedy when I started this fic and more of a vindictive cynical dark Yugi but I think that would be hard to combine with the pure Yugi in manga and anime whose against violence and fighting as he keeps telling Joey.

He nearly panicked when Atem flinched, but then Atem was holding his hand back, adjusting for comfort, and Kaiba could only hear his heartbeat in his ears as Atem blushed. He was so pretty like that. He was doing this whatever the end result. He was going to do this.
And then Atem spoke. "Seto," he'd said. God, that sounded...delightful coming from Atem's lips. Kaiba felt heady. He felt himself starting to smile, even as Atem backpeddled and took it back, returning to Gozoboro's last name. His brand.
But he was still deciding to stay here, even as Atem’s grip on his hand tightened until the heady feeling left and Kaiba's thoughts had cleared and he was left wondering why he was willing to behave so irrationally. To put himself out there for what? A chance at something that had been impossible until a few hours ago?
But forgetting Atem had already proved impossible. What choice did he have? He was going to end up miserable either way.
Atem was already promising not to kill him but he knew that. He knew it in his bones that he'd already be dead if Atem had wanted that for him. There were many opportunities before, had Atem wanted to. But instead, Atem had provided a road forward. Had looked at his soul and chosen not to crush it under his heel, had chosen to nurture it. He squeezed Atem's hand back as the words "rival mine" threatened to restart the entire process.
"Then let us enjoy our dinner," he replied, his voice far away to his own ears, more suave than he felt. Thank God for social autopilot.
“I’ve got a very bad idea. So…who wants to help me?” It might involve a certain ceo and a little bit of breaking and entering but those things never hurt anyone…

There are a couple of pitfalls of kaiba-centric artists’ accounts that i’ve come to watch out for - they think gozoboro/kaiba is a thing - they don’t sense kaiba’s twink aura. very distressing. - they want kaiba and blue eyes to FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

For the ship ask game Kaiba/Isono
Ship It
What made you ship it? Notably, I ship Kaiba with almost everyone. (Not Mokuba, not Gozoboro. Maybe not others, but those are my hard lines.) I spend too much time thinking about Kaiba and Kaiba ships. I have written more Kaiba than anyone else in Yugioh, probably anyone else period. And I spend a LOT of time seeking out Kaiba-centric fanfic, and guardshipping shows up a surprising amount, all things considered. This out of the way... One of my first Yugioh fics (and I think my first ever on AO3) was a violetshipping/puppyshipping porn AU fic with Isono as Kaiba's fluffer. I chose him because he's Kaiba's servant in canon and it felt right at the time. I have 0 regrets, and I can't recall having seen Kaiba/Isono in fic before that. That was a me choice and I'm sticking with it.
What are your favorite things about the ship? Ok so, I love that Isono has been there for Kaiba regardless of what this would mean for him personally. Most of the time I imagine this as fatherly, and not ship dynamics, especially in canon. But if I'm off exploring being Problematic TM, there's a kind of safety in that that I think would be freeing for Kaiba. He could ask for things that he wouldn't ask others, because he'd trust Isono not to say jack about it. He's always around and available, so there's nothing weird to cover up, and Isono is willing to do what Kaiba asks. I also just ... like the idea of Isono knowing too much because he's Kaiba's personal guard. Walking in on situations he shouldn't, or even there being a bit of a voyeurism thing there as he monitors Kaiba's personal security (intentional or not, doesn't matter).
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I don't think so? I don't know what popular opinions on this ship even are, although I can guess that the age gap, difference in status, etc. would squick a fair number of people, so even shipping it might be unpopular?
#thank you for the ask#guardshipping#isono#seto kaiba#isono/seto kaiba#ygo#ask answered#i feel like there ought to be some sort of warning tags on this but like... i'm just going to put the mature label and call it a day#i dont really know what to tag sorry folks

Yugioh S4 Ep6: Gozaburo Kaiba Just Casually Started WWIII And Only This One Guy Cares
Welcome to November, where we celebrate writing a 50,000 word book as if I don’t do that every single time I write about an episode of Yugioh. Hello, this is my season. It’s wordy season. I’m so freakin good at doing this. I can’t say most of what I’ve made is any good, but I CAN say at least I’m prolific. Do enough content to fill that bitter pit and walk right over it, that’s been my motto for the past 5 years.
Anyway, I had an awful flu this past week. (Everyone I live with had it so every bathroom was like ground zero) It was SO bad. I still can’t eat spicy food over a week later (Which is so hard for me because usually I can keep up with my Indian friends, that’s my spicy level--max spicy, please--but since this illness, my white taste genes went into overdrive and I tried putting pepperoncini slices in my sandwich and it set my mouth on fire. Pepperoncini. It’s v embarrassing.)
I did attempt to write this post. Unfortunately I never made it past this cap because I got VERY distracted by the emblem on Alister’s face, and how it isn’t proportionally adjusted to match the angle of his face, and it was like three paragraphs of just wanting to talk about it. And then at some point I got very distracted talking about how many empty glasses I was given at my place setting at this baby shower I went to during the flu epidemic, and it mattered a whole lot to me at the time, but I think, overall, was mostly just some sort of nonsense. The things I’ve spared you.
(bro has just informed me that the 4 gold-lipped crystal goblets I was given at this baby shower was actually very distressing and a very big deal and that I should absolutely talk to at least someone about it, but maybe he’s just saying that to make me feel better, but I have no idea. I am too sick for sarcasm at this time but my god why was I given so many glasses????)
I straight up have no memory of if I’ve made this joke before. Maybe.
(read more under the cut)
Since it feels like 8 years since the last time I could just eat chicken without feeling like I consumed an entire Thanksgiving meal, a little recap:
-Alister pretended he was Pegasus to lure Kaiba and then, off screen, murdered everyone in Pegasus’ castle
-Pegasus got murdered by I’m pretty sure Mai (which is like...OK then...)
-Yugi and Co went on vacation by driving directly through San Francisco and peeking out the window and saying “yeah that’s enough for me”
-No adults, not even Roland, bothered to come with their kids this time, so the only adult of the entire crew--Pegasus--is dead
-Rex and Weevil are luggage
-The Eye of Sauron showed up and it was the end of the world but Yugi threw a dragon at it so I guess everything is OK now
-Monsters are real but they are hard to animate so we’ll just pretend like they’re causing havoc everywhere although most of the planet seems basically unaffected by this.
-The Grim Reaper is a friendly monster that hangs out in a Japanese park and that feels fairly on brand.
And I think that was all that was happening so far.
In a weird twist of fate, Mokuba is the only one in this room that isn’t trapped which sort of...if you’re the only one NOT kidnapped wouldn’t that also be a type of being kidnapped?
And we finally get to figure out why Alister wants to Murder Kaiba so bad and, spoiler, it reaches.
???
I’m gonna get more to the obvious problems with Alister’s devotion to murdering all the Kaibas in a bit but yes, Alister is in fact going to try and Kill Kaiba on this kid’s show because of Kaiba’s Dad, who is such a horrible and abusive person that Kaiba essentially drove the bastard out of Japan and straight to the bottom of the ocean.
Just kinda feels like Alister has been living under a rock...which, I guess he has been. He has been living in some weird Atlantis structure so I guess he never got the memo that Gozaburo Kaiba is hella dead.
So that’s what they’re up to. How’s Sausalito?
Um.
Huh.
So the North Bay is a really classic scenery. It’s rolling hills. It’s NAPA. It’s like...definitely not Arizona. California has a couple of mesas but they’re no where near here and the Monument Valley style Mesas really only exist in Monument Valley.
And I know it’s because the background artist for Yugioh is all horny for horny rock structures but like...this couldn’t be farther from the Bay Area in the way that it is drawn and it is such a shock after all the work they did last episode to research that Bay Area lore. Once they crossed the Golden Gate they were like “well no one will care about this part” which is true not only of Yugioh but also of real life Californian politics.
Anyway, I have been making a map, but unfortunately my original file will not suffice. time to fix it.
There we go. Now they’re in the right place. Just smack dab in Monument Valley, Arizona, smack dab in the middle of the Navajo Nation and so hypothetically, not even in the United States anymore.
While in the car, Yugi has just been anxious as hell the entire time, and just going “y’all I have a bad feeling I’m uncomfortable I have a bad feeling” while Joey and Tea just patiently stared at him flipping out in the corner. So...kinda like a normal trip with someone who has high anxiety/possessed by a ghost. I kinda feel like this is every girls trip to Disneyland for me. There’s always one Yugi who’s like “no one said anything about CROWDS.” and you kinda just gotta let them do their thing. Just let them get it out of their system and hide in the bathroom when they need to hide in the bathroom and don’t fight it, they’ll be fine. Just hold their spot in line when they desperately look for a secret place to medicinally vape because there’s too many freakin children at Disneyland.
And it is HILARIOUS that Yugi is able to have this type of premonition but cannot figure out that they have somehow missed San Fransisco and have wandered into a DESERT.
Back in Pegasus’ California (an island that legitimately looks more like California than actual Yugioh California) Alister has decided to go completely off the rails and it happens so fast and without any warning.
the line is actually “This doll used to be my brother’s” which is a very different meaning but both are likely from weird ass Alister and this weird ass show, so I’ll leave the cap like this (although yes, this is what I thought Alister was saying for kind of a while until I recorded it for this blog and was like “oh shoot I heard the line wrong when I had the flu huh.”)
Man, RIP Noah, he would have been excellent this episode.
Honestly seems like just yesterday when Seto and Noah were pitted against eachother by a cyberdemon Dad-head floating in the sky, Mokuba was possessed for some reason and being used as a human shield, Tristan was a robot monkey, and Yugi was just shrugging at Kaiba from across the field like “Kaiba if you don’t play good you die--oh my gods, he died. Well that was bound to happen...again.” Man.
Alister should be their best friend, this is nonsense.
So lets do the math to 7 years before 2002.
I searched Wikipedia for wars during 1995 (they do have a list of 90′s wars) and looked for any that involved heavy use of tanks and their artillery fire (on big swatches of cities like this), inner city western architecture, temperate landscapes, and western clothing that match Alister and Mikey (AKA WWII vibes) and found out:
Nothing fits that description
UNLESS Alister and Mikey are time travelers from a WWII bombing in Europe. This is Yugioh. That could happen. Probably not, but youknow...it’s not too late for Yugioh to bring in time travel.
I mean if you don’t want to get super political in your cartoon just invent a world war I guess? We’ve already clarified that Gozaburo was Big Boss, so at this point I can easily see him inventing wars just to sell ships.
(I could probably add thousands of more deaths at this point but I have no idea where they are, if they’re on a tiny island or an entire country so I’ll just...leave the count alone but just now it’s implied that a hell ton of people died during this episode)
People going off about how Sesame Street is so amazing for talking about issues like you’re Dad going to prison while Yugioh was straight up talking about the intricacy of the War Economy. Yugioh being all “don’t forget kids, your good capitalist economy survives off of the undeserved bloodshed of civilians in other countries! Eat the poor!” and it’s like hot damn this heavy commentary came out of freakin no where.
Anyways, this is stuff most kid’s shows will delicately skip over but nah, Yugioh is going to go here, and they are going to steamroll directly through it with massive tanks.
So, lets kill this kid’s entire family and talk about the terrors of the World War of 1995 and all the war orphans who get recruited to become soldiers at the ripe old age of 9. Alister was 9 when he was recruited to be a child card soldier.
This kid’s show.
Alister is...basically Raiden, right? Like as long as we’re talking about Metal Gear, this kid is just one step away from cyborg implants and weird colored blood?
Better wear bright red when you visit the war crime scene, surprised Gozaburo didn’t invite like an entire photo -op crew to incriminate him even further.
Now we did look up “where the hell is Alister from Yugioh from?” (there is no answer) and we did find out a little factoid. In the Japanese version of the show, Gozaburo had bought the land and was just forcibly evicting Alister and his family from their home with tanks.
Which is wild.
He just straight up evicted an entire metropolitan city????
Like the dub did a way better job than the sub at this one, I’ll give them that.
It’s just so weird that Gozoboro just didn’t like...raise the rent like a normal bad landlord. Instead he was like “rather than gentrify my land and save me a ton of money, I’ll just destroy everything I just bought and murder everyone here” which is like...
...Seto did the world so many favors when he kicked out his Dad, right? Like Damn. I don't understand why Alister isn’t freakin worshiping Seto right now when his whole deal is “I must kill Gozaburo” and Seto’s like “yo I already did that. Twice. I didn’t even have to literally kill him either, I just embarrassed him so bad that he killed himself. His stupid tank company sells joke games now. I literally turned the man into a joke.”
Then again, Alister is on the green magic and like I think it alters your brain chemistry somewhat.
(How ripped did Alister get in this episode, by the way? The kid is like 16 years old or something so how did this happen? ...The perpetual horny line running straight through Yugioh, man. Look at it run. That 16 year old is drawn like he’s 28 and really into Crossfit and his crop top gets smaller and smaller like every scene.)
So like this is a very gray issue that I cannot believe they brought up in a kid’s show (like can you imagine if Scrooge McDuck had to face facts that his company murdered tons of people???), but also this is Seto Kaiba. Seto grew up in the system, so like he doesn’t need to be lectured to about dirty money because he was on the losing end of that not too long ago. Seto is himself basically a upscale war orphan since he was adopted by Gozaburo to continue the machine like a freakin maniac (a Solidus Snake, if you will) so of all the people on this show I don’t get why Seto would care about this. This is just how Seto views the entire world as either losing or winning and no reason to feel bad about it because he’s been both.
Also...Seto stopped the machine. Kind of. He was unaware that cards were the same thing as weapons, but at least he stopped the sale of huge child-stealing tanks.
So they play the game for a little while and Seto does kind of poorly as usual, and just when I thought this episode couldn’t get any weirder...
And just like that, Seto peaces out. Like he does almost every single time he has ever played a card game solo except for that one time he was playing Joey Wheeler. (Which was also one of the few times Seto ever won.)
Like I just want to remind you that this segment is in the same episode as WWIII and the tonal whiplash is pretty remarkable.
That’s right, we’re back in the Unnamed Monster World, which is not the Shadow Realm, and which I thought you could only access if you were dreaming and able to search through the puzzle maze.
Apparently this can just happen at any time and all that stuff with the guiding Kuriboh and Yugi and Pharaoh trying to find this place was just...them wasting time.
Again he ditches the legendary sword so freakin fast because who needs a sword when you have a dragon? Only this anime.
And that’s how Seto, who was absolutely going to lose this game, somehow just barely came to a draw.
So just to recap, Seto has yet to win a card game that he didn’t get prophetic help for via a hallucination or Yugi telling him what to do. Unless you count Joey and grandpa.
Then, the one last adult I forgot about, the driver of Yugi’s car, decides that it’s about time that he also died and left this show as adult free as possible.
THE HELL ARE THEY?
Also...maybe it’s the angle but the writing on that gas station looks a lot like kanji.
Yo, what if this is the backgrounds for a different show and they’re just sharing? I mean I doubt it because Yugioh had a good enough budget but...what if? What if that’s why they’re in Arizona?
Anyway, next time we’ll find out if this guy just drops dead or has been a Yugioh monster this whole time, and I think maybe both?
And if you just got here, this is a link to read all my Yugioh recaps in chrono order

There is season 5 Kaiba's late night office white and blue suit, but I don't know if that's manga compliant. Isono does see him in that outfit, but I feel like that is also fairly ic for this analysis; Isono is also one of the few people Kaiba could trust to see him outside of his armor, having stuck through Seto from the time of Gozoboro and beyond, despite several attempts by Pegasus and others to get him to betray Kaiba. (Alrhough presumably Kaiba shoes up to work in regular clothes from time to time too.)
Seto Kaiba's coat thoughts?
(gif is from a ygo amino)
I love thinking about character design and how it can reveal things about a character. While not every character's outfits are profound symbolism or anything, I do think there is a lot to be said about Seto Kaiba's coats.
All of his coats, especially the white battle city one remind me of the wings of a dragon (especially for how they flare outward and around so much) and the hip-spikes and generous shoulder padding just sell it for me. I feel like this is intentional but obviously idk what TK's thoughts behind it were lol. But my personal head cannon is that it is an extension of his obsession with BEWD and he is trying to make himself look like a dragon, i.e bigger and more imposing.
I think his coats are his armor. the BEWD is a consistent figure in his life and in a way, his protector, his right-hand man (card? dragon? woman? idek) The BEWD is something Kaiba uses as a vehicle of his power and an extension of himself. And I think that also applies to his manner of dress. Kaiba never wants to feel small, weak, or unguarded ever again.
So he wears a coat bigger than himself that ripples behind him as he walks, how it seems to defy gravity and appear to be carried by wind even when he is standing still, and how it creates distance between other people. It adds to his presence and makes him take up space. He doesn't only want the dragon by his side, he want's to embody it. Everything is like warfare to him. May it be a duel or the tasks of a businessman. BEWD, his pride, and cut-throat methods are his weapons. And his coat is his armor of choice.
(please correct me if I'm wrong) Excluding episodes where he's in a school uniform or something, he is never seen removing/ without his iconic coats in front of anyone but Mokuba. Not only that, But Mokuba is also the only person he shares his clothing with. To me, this reinforces the idea that his coat is his armor. because Mokuba is the only, if not one of the few people he wants to protect. The only person who he is unguarded with, and instead extends his "armor" towards.
Kaiba is all about power, drama and even theatrics at times. Everyone can see that. It is indeed reflected in his style. But I think his clothes reveal a bit more about his self image and overarching ideas.
He is not the only ygo character who treats clothes as a sort of armor to face the outside world. I think Yuugi's leather vest and chains and all his punkish paraphernalia are also a kind of armor for him. That's why I think he wears them less as the series goes on and his style in DSOD is more light, breezy and comfortable looking.
So long story short, I think the white coat is an excellent design choice for him. Maybe I read to much into it, maybe I didn't. I just love this guy and his obnoxious outfits.

Yugioh S3 Ep 18: Noah’s Dad Decides he Doesn’t Love His Son Anymore When Noah Gets Way Too Into Petz Hexing
I was hanging out with Bro and he made me look at a lot of bad Yugi wigs that were 600 dollars each, and because only like...4 good Yugi wigs exist in the world, I decided to help him get out that Yugi itch in a healthier way, by copy editing these posts and fixing the way I spell Gozaburo wrong about 400 more times before this arc ends.
So last we left off, Noah decided to reference that one part of the Bible he knows.
He’s gonna change the playing field to kind of run through the history of the Earth, showing us that in every period of history his outfit was never acceptable.
Also he got the history a...little bit wrong. You had to have people before Noah’s ark but...whatever. I took astrology, there’s a lot about planet formation we’re still kind of guessing on, so do whatever you feel like, Yugioh. It’s not like any kids watching this got real pissy about how Noah was totally botching the Archean period.
He also decides to dump on us how he got so smart. See, Kaiba got smart by studying a lot, surrounding himself with people way dumber than him, and then just bossing everyone around him until they agreed with him that he was very smart. In Noah’s case, it’s because he’s literally a computer.
I’m really glad I get to find another anime that’s all ham about this tree. In this case just slapping it on there for a few seconds, long enough for me to say “WHAT THE HELL, KIDS SHOW?” before it vanishes again.
Good on you, Noah. You just...casually slipped that in there.
Ah, but unfortunately, the AI who is like...not even human and is *pretty sure* He’s Noah Kaiba is still kind of attached to his Dad. Maybe it was a part of his core code that he couldn’t reject his Father? I dunno, just seems weird that he achieved enlightenment and was like “So uh...I guess I’ll play cards and take over a mindless corporation. Good use of my time.”
(read more under the cut)
Kaiba’s reaction to hearing that his brother stores all of human knowledge was “well, it can’t possibly be that difficult. I’ve done way more than that. I have a homeschool degree and half a high school diploma so go to Hell, bro.”
Yo how many people would sit down, turn to their computer, and just start shouting at their core processor about how they’re waaaay smarter than it? Remember that during this entire conversation, Kaiba is shouting at a literal computer.
So anyway, we finally get to see why they bothered showing us spider room a few episodes back. Youknow, that room with the baby in it? Turns out...there was never a baby in this room, since Noah was a kid when he first woke up here.
Before it was covered in spiders, it was covered in blue and off white. This is a very boring Martha Stewart room in different shades of robin eggshell. You can tell this kid is a Kaiba because oh boy that is a...really boring 50 yo housewife look, ain’t it?
I’m sure it’s symbolic for the fact he is hella dead and innocent at this point but like...every time we see Kaiba interior design it’s just the last type of design you expect from this high octane family.
Anyway, Noah’s kind of surprised to be awake because, last he remembers, he was very much hit by a car.
Ya, I mean, if you have to tell your son you Frankenstiened him into a horrible crime against humanity, might as well tell him as quickly and bluntly as possible, I guess.
Anyway, because Noah existing breaks the most basic moral human laws in every country on Earth, they kinda can’t let him go anywhere, which means that to prevent the loneliness, Kaiba gives him...a pet?
So Noah and the dogcat decide to travel through Domino and realized very quickly that there were only like...five NPC’s. There’s like an ice cream girl, and like a couple walking people, and that’s about it.
Noah’s words were something like “man this place is full of glitches!” because his dogcat wouldn’t stop barking and he threw a rock at it and it didn’t care. Glitches.
I guess it’s one way to look at it?
It feels like Noah got somewhat cursed like Pharaoh did, just a little bit. Like not completely it’s just that I can’t help but notice both are trapped in some sort of basic geometry shape--Pharaoh’s is a pyramid and Noah’s is an orb, and both have untold superpowers matched with some heavy depression that goes with having said superpowers. Not to mention, both have a host body all set up for possession, it’s just Kaiba is a little bit youknow...unwilling to participate. They’re very different obviously it’s just...way to trap your characters in shapes.
Anyway, last episode I felt like maybe Noah liked being an orb, this episode he’s made it a little more clear that it is kind of not great being an orb...but only because he can’t throw any rocks at dogs or have real conversations with anyone but his own Dad.
Anyway, Noah got a little bored. So his Dad sent him to virtual Mars.
And now Noah only finds joy in hacking his digital pet. Relatable.
Now I know a good chunk of you are my age--that good Jenna Marbles age--and will know exactly what I am referring to, as for the rest of you, turning your digital pet into a hell creation was just a thing we all did in year 2000ish. All of us did this.
And I was like “I bet you, that someone out there has made a robot Hex, I guarantee” because I spent...I want to say 2 years of my life downloading modded breedz of Catz 4? I even tried to do it myself but I wasn’t any good at it because I was super young and bad at computers, I never actually got Robbie William’s Millennium as a Catz meow (though trust me, I did try. It was my life’s dream when I was small.)
But the closest I found to a Robot Petz was this?
Dang. Look at that thing. This one is actually pretty good because it does resemble an animal. I admire it a lot. Trust me, I spent like days moving my bunniez feet around trying to make a dragon and just ended up downloading someone else's dragon.
And then, from the same page I saw this gem right above it.
HELL YES........
....I freakin love this period of the internet so freakin much. I was only ever really a part of a couple of fandoms as a child and the Petz fandom will forever hold a little part of my heart. I mean, look at this. What’s not to love?
Like, Catz is probably number 3 on my list of best games ever made. Not so much because the game was any good, but because none of the files were protected in any way so even kids like me could hack in there and make the weirdest abominations and post them all to their Angelfire pages.
Well, other kids could, I was so baby that I was still using my Mom’s email address and did not know how to put a damn thing on my webpage. Which I did have. But it had like...only frames. It had like 3 words and just me splitting the page into 50 frames because I did not know what I was doing.
I apologize to all the kids in the room who have never seen a web page covered in ugly ass frames. You lucky bastards.
....but Petz...Noah was into PETZ. I can respect him for that.
I still think he’s a little creep-o, but knowing that he hacked his pet has given me a lot of appreciation for his work.
Anyway, it was after Noah changed the boring ass simpleton dog into a much better dog that Gozoboro decided “I have made a monster, I am abandoning my boy.” Which uh...this was the thing?
This?
I mean as far as body horror goes, Litterbox up there is way worse. As far as body horror goes, we also have, Jinzo over here, but the digital dog with a cute robot head was the thing that made Gozoboro say “What have I done!?” The dog is digital, it’s not even alive.
Especially since I feel like the follow up question Noah made was like way more frightening than the dog thing?
Kaiba glazes right over this entire conversation. Like full stop, he didn’t even seem to blink. No part of this story even slightly surprised him, although I will admit, at least Seto has decided that Noah...exists and might in fact be a robot his Father made once. This in itself is a big deal for Kaiba, who has a goldfish memory and denial wider than the sea he’s trapped under.
First of all, congrats to the storyboarder/animator for drawing a hand in that angle, mad respect.
Second of all, this is pretty close to the actual line from the show, Kaiba legit thinks that his Dad wanted Kaiba to be the president, after he knows full well that his Dad was like “Don’t Take Over My Company, You Little Twerp” and then like tried to even send Seto back to the orphanage whence he came. Kaiba’s pretty sure that his Dad wanted that whole thing to happen exactly the way it happened. No regrets. Just family being family.
And Moki’s still chilling on the Moki couch, just kinda taking this all in before he’s summoned unto the field like a playing card.
Ah, yet another person who is like “KILL MEEE” on this show. It’s been kind of a while. Like, who’s left that hasn’t stood in front of a loaded card-gun like this? Duke? Is Duke the only one who hasn’t sacrificed his body for the greater card-good at this point? Is this why Duke is our amoral Chaotic Neutral? Is this why Duke is still the only one who hasn’t died yet (and I’m crossing my fingers still that he’s gonna be our death 169, it can happen, I can believe)?
I feel like this is the season of weird hugs. Like everyone on this show that has hugged has gotten a little weird. The only not-weird hug was when Yugi attempted to hug Joey once and then Joey dodged the hug and wrestled him into an arm-distanced noogie instead--which is technically still not a hug, but the closest we’ve gotten to something a human would do. It is so lucky for our art team that all the huggers are supposed to be hella weird anyway.
Anyway, next episode we get to find out if Noah also had an AIM username or got really into Jelly pens. I can see him getting suuuper into Jelly pens, with hair like that.
Anyway, here’s a link to Season 1 Ep 1 to read in Chrono order, in case you just got here and you’re looking for that.
