In an 1826 essay on the supernatural, pioneering gothic author Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) controversially stated that there are two ways of evoking fear in literature: HORROR and TERROR. The former is when horrible things actually happen, and is implicitly male. The latter keeps the reader in a continual state of suspense, and is predominantly female. Radcliffe suggested that one was better than the other...and boldly claimed the Matthew 'Monk' Lewis (1775-1818) wrote horror, which she wrote terror.
