Broke Cosplay part 1: Materials & Wigs

here’s number 1 in my edition of #brokebitchcosplays! this will be all about materials and how to get things for cheap. 

disclaimer: this isn’t the right way to do things, it’s just my way and i want to share tips to help you! it’s also geared towards people who make cosplays. i'll be posting tips for buyers soon as well!

materials:

joanns has sales and has them often! i practically live on casa collection fabric that’s almost always on sale. plus, if you join the text mailing list thing, you get additional coupons like 20% off purchase and 50% off one regular priced item. 

thread: you don’t need 1 zillion colors! i keep black and white on me always, and those usually serve my purposes. if i desperately need another color, i get a small thing of thread in the color i need.

you don’t need worbla! use craft foam, it’s much cheaper and does similar things. use it for all your armor and prop needs! also if you live in the us, usps will give you cardboard shipping boxes for free. just go to their website and request some! i used these packing boxes for myrtenaster, and i’ll be using that trick in the future. it’s FREE after all! 

junk stores! are amazing! they often sell random cuts of fabric for SUPER cheap, so you can probably find something that will suit your needs. they also sell random stuff that can be modified! also for super cheap! jewelry, trinkets, and circuit boards can be useful.

on a similar note, thrift stores and consignment stores are amazing more for modding. you never know when you can find an old coat, some shoes, and accessories that could work for a cosplay. 

etsy!! it’s often expensive, not to mention the cost of shipping internationally. but with some vigilant searching, you’ll probably find what you need for cheap. my cersei pendant was $2.80, and it’s a good quality pendant! also amazing for character specific things.

ebay has things for cheap. do it.

if you’re a student, amazon prime student is great! it’s free for 6 months and discounted after that. 

onlinefabricstore has pretty good fabric for cheap! not the silk, though. but i got 5 yards of jacquard for less than $20, which is good. the prices of basic fabric are generally pretty low, but keep in mind the shipping costs!

for gems / small molded things, model magic is great. you can also get clear glass gems and paint the back to mimic colored gems! no need to resin cast if you don’t want to.

wigs: this is the one thing i splurge on... but for those who don’t want to, here’s my guide! i don’t only buy from arda, even though it looks like it.

of course, there’s arda wigs for a diverse range of colors and styles and thefivewits for character styles. both are lovely stores that i love, but the price point is higher!

ebay is hit or miss. you can get really great stuff for cheap or hit a bad seller that’ll give you a terrible quality wig. people are notorious for stealing other people’s photos. when you look for a wig, make sure to read reviews and check out the seller! if they have good ratings and have been selling for a while, it’s safe to assume you’ll get something good.

amazon is a favorite of mine! i recommend the seller mapofbeauty, as i’ve ordered a decent quality wig for very cheap. they are a bit thin up top, but for longer styles that don’t need spiking and a killer price, i can overlook it. with amazon, make sure to read reviews and stay away from anything that says ‘ fashion wig ‘ or ‘ party wig! ‘

aliexpress is similar to ebay, and it’s another hit or miss. essentially, you’re paying wholesale price instead of retail price, but it does ( usually ) come from china and therefore takes a while. as usual, read the reviews and look for reputable sellers! 

online isn’t the only place you can get wigs. at conventions, especially on sundays, wig shops will have sales or ‘ grab bags ‘ to get rid of their extra stock. defective wigs are also sometimes sold at conventions for a lower price, and the only issue with them is usually the color! 

you can make lacefronts yourself if you have the time, as well as glued hairlines. here’s a few tutorials, since i’m bad at explaining things. (x,x,x)

got2b hairspray is great, and it’s often around $2 at target.
