Happiness Lies Within!
Do you know what the highest searched questions on Google or YouTube are? You may be surprised! Questions related to Happiness are among the most searched on the net. Questions like, How to be happy? How can I be happy alone? What are the secrets to happiness? are among the highest searched on the net. But why are people looking for happiness, online? Can asking these questions to a mere machine help? Well, to begin with, there are a lot of speakers online who help with these questions. A lot has been written online and published and yet millions ask these questions. The irony of it all is the fact that I am publishing my view on the subject online! Here is my take on 'Happiness Online'.
First things first, life is a circle and so is a pizza! I love pizza and so does my five-year-old daughter. Eating with my child is an experience that I would not trade for anything in this world. That pops up the question, will I still be happy to buy a pizza, even if it's out of my budget? Well, with all the pay cuts and layoffs happening lately, the day it really does go out of my budget, does not seem far! This question leads to another very important question, can happiness be found outside? What do I mean by outside? Well by outside I mean going to Goa, meeting a new partner, buying a new car and pizza of course! These are the external things we continuously and loyally devote our times to. Our goals are based on these external things, every time one goal is achieved we set ourselves another one and finally we end up in front of a computer typing, How to be happy? External things bring joy or happiness for a moment and then they are gone and we are left in want. We keep searching for happiness in things, people, and events but none of these give us lasting happiness. Where then can we find happiness? The answer is both complex and simple. Happiness lies within! The human mind and its complex nature blinded by the distractions of today's fast-moving world makes it difficult for us to remain still and observe. Once we realize the transient nature of external objects, we begin our inward journey. It is on this great journey that we realize true happiness and experience eternal peace. Well, you may ask how about the car and the money and the perfect job and the partner? These are important events in life that teach us the transient nature of things. Your best tool towards happiness is the Realization that the outer world is not where happiness lies, and that shall be your first step towards your inward journey. There are a few other things that can speed up your inward journey like Buddhist meditation and Indian yoga. These ancient practices will help you immensely. How to practice meditation and yoga? Well get online and search and in the meantime let me order another pizza while I still have the cash.
Vikram Pratap Singh is a writer and a content creator for www.extrainsights.in. He is inspired by arts, music and society. Vikram is also a student of ancient Indian yoga and meditation. This article is his take on the subject of happiness.

From Chapati to Sticky Rice
People who have spent considerable time in India have repeated to us time and time again the same line, “India will change you.” And to neither of our surprises, this turned out to be the case. Here are few examples:
We learned quickly that every day would be a challenge, and that nothing can be taken for granted in India. Getting from A-B, finding a restaurant, finding a pharmacy, finding a bathroom, heck even walking next to each other in a crowd can be tough in Delhi. Travelling here forces you to maintain a calm and composed state of mind even in the most trying of situations. Given that timetables and stated schedules are meaningless, letting yourself get flustered at the first hiccup can be a trip ruiner.
True Statement: If you can travel in India, you can travel anywhere in the world.
We experienced sensory overload pretty much every day. I’ve never been in a place that had so many smells, sights and sounds ricocheting off each other at all hours. While we continuously felt overwhelmed by this, we soon learned to appreciate the vibrancy of the everyday chaotic routine of India.
Living healthy is incredibly easy to do when you put yourself in a healthy environment. For two months we didn’t eat meat, rarely drank alcohol and didn’t consume dairy. Restaurants aren’t marketed as “vegan” or “farm to table”... they just are. We found ourselves sleeping incredibly well, practicing yoga nearly every day and reading more than we ever had in our lives. There is a reason that India is the yoga and meditation capital of the world… it is the perfect cure for the everyday chaos of living in such a country. Our New Year's resolutions are to continue this healthy lifestyle as we continue our travels and re-enter the “real world” in April.
India constantly reminded us that the best way to get our questions answered was by talking to other people. Finding information online, if it exists at all, is often outdated and incorrect. The blogs we were reading tended to be 3-4 years old, and many of the restaurants/attractions we went out looking for had inaccurate pins on Google Maps. Instead of burying our heads in our iPhones, we were reminded of the old fashioned way of asking for help. Human-to-human interaction, to no surprise, was our lifeline when we were lost or confused (which was often). Locals were more than willing to point us in the right direction after we showed them a restaurant/guest house on on phone, and a few times they even walked us where we needed to go (without asking for anything in return) just to make sure we didn’t get lost.
Most important of all: trust your gut. If you don’t like a guesthouse, leave. If you don’t trust a taxi driver, look for another. If a menu looks questionable, the food is probably also questionable & you should keep searching. Letting your gut and intuition guide the way is the only way to survive long term travel in India. Decisions should be made from the heart and from the gut, not because a guidebook says something or Trip Advisor suggests it. The best way to experience India is through an open mind and flexible schedule. Things will go wrong, and your ability to roll with it will make or break your trip.
When we get asked about out two months in India we speak in incredibly fond and honest terms. We say “It’s crazy. You should go. You need to go. If you are able to slow down & let things happen how they may, travelling in India will simultaneously astonish you, startle you, and ultimately, change you.”
See you later India!
And just like that… exactly two months from the day we landed in Ft. Cochin, India, we hit the road for Chiang Mai, Thailand! Our 21 hour travel day looked something like this:
Alarm goes off at at 2:30, 2:35 & 2:40am in Delhi 3am taxi from Delhi guesthouse to Delhi airport 6am flight from Delhi to Calcutta 4 hour layover in Calcutta 2pm flight from Calcutta to Bangkok 8pm flight Bangkok to Chiang Mai 20 minute taxi from airport to guesthouse Bed at 11pm
^^ That is a cricket :)
From the moment we were dropped off in front of our guesthouse in Chiang Mai, we were struck by the silence that surrounded us. People weren’t honking their horns, dogs weren’t barking, construction wasn’t being done on every corner… we could even walk side by side without the fear of being run off the road. Compared to Delhi, Chiang Mai felt more like Disney World than the second biggest city in Thailand. It was refreshingly eerie.
Chiang Mai is the capital of Northern Thailand, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The charming “Old City” is a one-mile by one-mile grid, surrounded by a picturesque moat dating back to 1292. Buildings don’t rise above three stories, and there are cafes on every corner with reliably fast wifi. The developed, yet chilled out vibe of the city is what makes it one of the most frequented destinations for digital nomads and expats to settle in.
We spent our days exploring the city by pedal bike, and our nights eating street food at the market and listening to live jazz at a bar down the road from our guesthouse.
I ran a few times while in India, specifically in Goa, but gave up after being chased by dogs on more than one occasion. In Thailand I was able to run again, with the boundaries of the Old City creating a perfect four mile running path.
One afternoon we ventured into to the beautiful countryside for a traditional Thai cooking course. We arrived at an organic farm 30 minutes from Chaing Mai, and promptly went to work pounding green curry paste, stir-frying pad thai and chopping ingredients for papaya salad. After these dishes were cooked and eaten, we escaped to a set of hammocks overlooking rice paddies to sleep off our meal. An hour later, we were awoken by the chef to begin cooking our second round of food: fresh spring rolls and mango sticky rice. It was a successfully glutenous day.
7-Eleven's are on every corner in Thailand and are the perfect place to escape the heat (the AC is always on full blast). You can find everything from soy chocolate milk to fresh mango, and even pay for bus tickets at the checkout counter. Even the most run down 7-Eleven in Thailand is more helpful than most of our hostels were in India.
Almost equal to the number of 7-Elevens in Chiang Mai are the number of Thai massage parlors. In an effort to discern the quality establishments from the ones looking to prey on backpackers, we followed the suggestion of our guesthouse owners and went to their favorite place. A Thai massage is more in line with a 60 minute full body stretch session than a traditional western relaxation massage, which is why they get mixed reviews from travelers. The masseuse takes full advantage of their feet, legs, elbows and forearms in their attempt to stretch and contort our bodies into once thought impossible positions… and we loved it. At $6 USD for a full hour, it is no surprise that I returned a few days later for a follow up.
One afternoon we took out 40-year-old rented bikes and ventured to the only public park in the Old City. To our delight, the park was in pristine condition and full of westerners doing acro yoga, tai chi, and slacklining. We spent the next few hours doing yoga, reiki, reading, napping and admiring the acrobatics going on around us.
I’ve been getting beard trims throughout our time abroad, but the time had come for a proper haircut. We asked our guesthouse for a recommendation, and after showing us on the map where the nearest place is, they warned us not to go after 5pm because that’s when the barbers start drinking. It was 7pm... and we decided to give it a go anyway. When we showed up the whole family was having a big feast outside the parlor, complete with several bottles of alcohol scattered on the tables. They greeted us with big smiles and welcoming “Sawadees” (hello in Thai), and we asked, “Haircut?” A woman who looked like she hadn’t been drinking (too much) jumped up and led us inside. She threw a towel over my shoulders, we exchanged less than 10 words about what I wanted, and she started clipping away. Twenty minutes later, I had a fresh haircut and beard trim. If she had been drinking, she hid it well.
Once a quiet and somewhat remote town in Northern Thailand, Pai is now properly on the backpacker trail in SE Asia and can easily be accessed from Chiang Mai by a 4 hour minivan ride than includes 762 turns (they sell shirts in Pai say “I survived the 762 turns to Pai”). Once you make it through the harrowing journey, you are greeted by a delightful town full of vegan restaurants, reggae bars & backpacker bungalows. Pai tends to get a bad rap from old timers and long term travellers because of how rapidly it has changed over the last 10 years, but to us it was an oasis. The resort -- yes we stayed at a “resort” -- where we spent the week was 12 dollars a night for a private bungalow, which included a fabulous free yoga class each morning along with free breakfast.
We hiked one afternoon with our new friends from Auckland to a waterfall just outside of town. Per a few blogs online, we learned that a dog often serves as a tour guide on this particular hike. 15-minutes into the hike, a gorgeous pup strolls out of the woods and joins our ranks. For the next three hours Winston (as we named him) guided us through two dozen river crossings and patiently waited as we took photos at the waterfall. When we were ready to turn around and head home, Winston once again took the lead and showed us the way. Thanks for everything, Winston!
In Pai we went to the 12th Annual Pai Reggae Music Festival. Their were ads all over town highlighting the event, saying the festival was on Saturday and Sunday, started at mid-day and was located on the grounds of a specific hotel just outside of town. We popped the hotel name in Google Maps, saw it was a few mile walk from our place, and opted out of taking a taxi. After a 2.5 mile walk in the hills we made it to the festival!
Just kidding. Google Maps was wrong. We were nowhere near the reggae fest. We headed back into town, and ended up teaming up with other lost souls who were also searching for this mystical festival.
After another 2 miles, we finally made it! It was 4pm, and we soon learned that the festival didn’t start until 7pm. Our first question to ticket counter… “Why does your poster say mid-day?” Their response was, “Great question.”
We headed to the nearest restaurant to grab a beer, and found out that the entire restaurant was full of festival goers who also showed up too early and were now killing time playing cards, drinking beer and swapping travel tales.
We returned at 7pm with a whole crew of new friends, and boogied until midnight. Who doesn’t love Thai men singing in English with a Rasta accent? We sure did.
Camryn found a picture on Instagram a few weeks ago of a gorgeous sunrise in an obscure corner of Northeast Thailand that we hadn’t read about in any of our guide books. We asked a few people if they had heard of this magical place called Phu Chi Fa, and no one recognized the name. Immediately, we were intrigued. After two weeks in Chiang Mai and Pai, we were craving an off-the-beaten-track adventure. We got it, no doubt.
After a quick Google search, we read a few blog posts from travellers (dating back 4-5 years) saying that this town was their favorite in all of Thailand and not be missed. Details on getting there were hard to come by, as some said they took a bus there… others said the bus was no longer running and were forced to rent a motorcycle... some hired a private taxi. We chanced it on faith, and showed up at the bus station in Chiang Rai looking wide eyed for a sign saying Phu Chi Fa. And we found it :)
After a casual 3 hour bus ride, we were dropped off in front of a police station in a tiny village that only exists so people can visit the Phu Chi Fa mountain at sunrise. We read online that English is not spoken here, so we were all prepped and ready to use our hand signals and phone calculator to aid in bargaining. After a 15-minute walk down the only street, we found a gem of a guesthouse. We dropped our bags, ate a forgettable meal at a roadside restaurant by pointing at pictures of food on the wall, and went to bed early. Tomorrow’s adventure would come in only a few hours.
Our phone alarms greeted us at 3:30, 3:35, 3:40 and 3:45 am. We were out the door at 4am heading back to the police station to catch a songthaew (like a pickup truck with benches in the back) to take us halfway up the mountain. We were dropped within a 30 minute hike up to the top of Phu Chi Fa mountain, which we eagerly scampered up by headlamp with all of our warm clothes on.
We were one of the first to the top, however within the hour nearly 300 Thai tourists joined us. Not another westerner in sight, to our delight.
Trying to describe the sunrise would do its beauty a disservice, so I’ll just leave you with the pictures.
After a few hours enjoying the sunrise, we were back in front of the police station eating banana pancakes waiting for our bus to depart at 9am. Our next destination was Chiang Khong, a city on the border between Thailand and Laos. We arrived at our guesthouse in Chiang Khong and expected our $6USD a night room to be somewhat of a dump, and planned on heading into Laos the next morning. To our surprise, we were greeted by a gorgeous pool and fast wi-fi. Needless to say, we stayed two nights and spent a full day relaxing poolside. Treat yourself, right?
You’ll hear all about Laos in our next post by Cam. Thanks for reading!
Best, JJ

Our definitive guide to travelling the world long term
“Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to great places! You’re off and away!” ~ Dr Seuss. So you’ve decided you want to travel, and you’re pretty sure it’s going to be for a while (hooray!)? Perhaps you’ve booked your flights already, you may even know where you want to go. But what next? Do you book all your transfers and hotels now? How do you pack for different seasons on the road? And how much do you need to budget for, anyway?! While the dream might be to jump on a plane without a plan and get outta here indefinitely, sadly the reality of planning to travel the world for a while is definitely not as easy as that. After spending the past year living the nomad life around the globe, we’ve definitely been around the block (and temple, mountain, café, and gallery) a few times during the last rotation of the sun. Which is why we’ve come up our ultimate guide on how to long term travel – to help those of you out there who want to take the plunge and live the nomadic life indefinitely. HOW TO TRAVEL THE WORLD LONG TERM | OUR DEFINITIVE GUIDE BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME Before you even think about leaving for a life of long term travel, work out the answers to questions the below – it’ll guide your preparation: What’s your travel style going to be? Luxury, backpacker, etc. Why do you want to travel the world? What do you want to get out of the experience? What’s your travel budget? Are you travelling the world solo, with a friend, or partner? How long do you want to travel the world for? ACCOMMODATION Considering one of the largest costs of your trip will be accommodation, you’re going to have to work out what kind of traveller you’re going to be pretty early on in the planning stages. Are you going to rough it and camp, or stay in luxurious hotels? Spend your nights at budget backpackers or glampack your way around the world? Answer that question, then plan your budget accordingly. AIRBNB AirBnB is our first port of call (bad travel pun!) when looking for accommodation, and it should be yours too. Sign up here using our exclusive discount code and you’ll receive £25/$40 off your first booking. How good is that! HOTELS COMBINED If you haven’t heard of Hotels Combined, it’s essentially the Skyscanner of accommodation. It compares all the top travel sites to find the best hotel deals. HOSTELWORLD If we’re not staying in AirBnB’s, we’re generally staying in hostels, and we use Hostelworld to find the best hostels/cheapest hostels in our destination of choice. Learn more about hostels with this brilliant intro guide to hostel living! MONEY MATTERS After you’ve decided your travel style, then comes the rest of your budget. Some things to consider: What are your eating habits like? Save more, or less, cash according to how hangry you’re likely to get if you can’t afford food! What about activities? Are you planning on doing many tours, sightseeing, or other additional activities? These are extra on top of your budget, so make sure you’ve also allocated an ‘activities allowance’. As a guide, a 2-day safari in Botswana’s Chobe National Park is likely to set you back a minimum of USD$350, while a cooking class in Laos might set you back USD$50-70 extra You’re going to have to replace things on the road. Toiletries run out eventually, you lose things, clothes get ripped and fall apart, or you might have to buy new clothes to suit a totally new climate (i.e. winter!). Have an ‘unexpected extras’ allowance ready to go too! Tell your bank that you’re travelling overseas before you leave to avoid having your cards suspended or cancelled due to suspected fraudulent activity! You will spend more than you’ve planned to… So always have a contingency reserve up your sleeve just in case. If you’re keen to travel the world, here’s how we saved to travel the world, and you can too. PLANNING AND ADMIN Plan ahead but please, don’t plan everything. Locking yourself into a rigid itinerary takes away your ability to stay longer in a place you love, or move on from a place you don’t. Plan the necessary stuff – long haul flights are often cheaper booked in advance, organise accommodation for places you know will be busy – but allow yourself the freedom to roll with the opportunities your travels will offer along the way. VISAS AND PASSPORTS This is the least fun part of travel – the official stuff! But, remembering the follow tips will help make your life 39480239 times easier when you’re standing across from an angry looking border official! Know ahead of time whether you need a visa for the countries you’re visiting – it can become extremely expensive and time-draining if you suddenly have to do a mercy dash to another town to organise it, or shell out extra at a border for faster processing. Carry printed photocopies of all your important documents somewhere other than your document wallet. Also have copies of your vital documents saved somewhere online-accessible, (we use a Google Drive folder), with a family member at home, on your email… anywhere! That way, if everything else goes missing you’ll always be able to download the copies until you can organise replacements. Many places won’t let you enter the country with less than six months left on your passport, or less than 2-4 blank pages left. Organise a new one if your passport’s up for renewal soon, or running out of space. TRAVEL GUIDES Never underestimate the power of a hardcopy travel guide. Internet can be patchy in many places, which is obviously going to hinder your smooth planning. We’ve always travelled with a trusty Lonely Planet guide, so regardless of internet issues we’ve can always check our options. Their information on the history, politics, people, culture and language of the country is also invaluable reading on long bus rides! Or, check out some of our travel guides! TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR LONG TERM TRAVEL Travel insurance is not an optional extra. We repeat… TRAVEL INSURANCE IS NOT AN OPTIONAL EXTRA! Read our ultimate guide to travel insurance. Have you considered what will happen when: An airline loses your luggage Something valuable gets damaged, lost, or stolen An emergency situation (political crisis, natural disaster) forces your itinerary to be changed or cancelled completely? You’re involved in some kind of accident, get seriously sick, or injured? Getting a quote for a year’s worth of travel can seem like a daunting and expensive cost – but don’t even think about leaving for the airport unless you’ve got it. Things will always go wrong, and this way you’ll be covered in the event that it does. For simple and flexible travel insurance, get a quote from World Nomads now! PACKING Personally, we find backpacks definitely easier to travel with than roller bags or suitcases. They’re easily swung on your back, strapped on and out of the way, and keep your hands free (Mim used this Osprey backpack in S/M during our travels!). On the other hand, roller bags take up way too much space, trip people over, and are a nightmare on potholed or cobblestone streets – not to mention carrying them up stairs! Take half what you think you need. You’ve gotta carry everything you take for 12 months. You won’t use half of it, and it just adds weight. Don’t take your good stuff away with you (okay girls, maybe one nice, versatile dress) – your clothes are going to end up looking like you crawled backwards through a thorn bush covered in mud by the time you’re finished with them. Make sure it’s the clothes you don’t care about that it happens to. Learn how to pack like a pro with our tips. ON THE ROAD How you move about on the road is up to you and what makes you feel comfortable. That said, our tips for when you are finally travelling are: MONEY Saving for your trip before you go isn’t enough, you also need to cut your costs while on the road: Look for the cheapest deals on flights (Skyscanner, obviously!), accommodation (use Hotels Combined for the cheapest accommodation options around the world), and tours. It’s generally always cheaper to book things like safaris when you get to a place, rather than online. Track your costs just as you tracked your savings (see the apps section for the perfect way to do this!). Street food will always be cheaper than a meal at a restaurant. Where possible, buy your own food instead of constantly shelling out in cafes or restaurants. We carried muesli, snacks, and lunch stuff with us most of the time, so that we could look after ourselves till dinner time! Read how we saved to travel the world long term. ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT Much of this comes down to personal preference… But we found the following tips extremely helpful: If you’re arriving late at night, organise your first night’s accommodation ahead of time to avoid any issues, but try not to book more than a couple of nights ahead in case you get there and don’t feel the vibe as much as you thought you would. Travel slow. Stay longer in less places, and get to know them really well. The richest travel experiences we’ve had came from feeling ‘like a local’ in a place. Plus, by staying like a local for longer, you’re supporting the market owners, taxi drivers, shopkeepers and guesthouse owners in the area – and that’s awesome. Avoid using taxis wherever possible and take the local transport instead. It’s cheaper, you’ll meet more locals, and get a more authentic perspective of where you’re travelling in. You don’t always have to have your flights locked in months in advance – we often booked our next one only a couple of weeks before. Sometimes we had to pay for it, other times we lucked out with an amazing deal that made up for it! THE EXTRAS Back everything up, all the time. There’s no excuse these days not to back your stuff up to the cloud or a hard drive – even if you need to duck into an internet cafe! Keep good notes – don’t rely on your memory to remember the little beach cafe you had incredible seafood curry in Goa, or the afternoon you spent exploring the tiny temple you stumbled across in Luang Prabang. Write them down in your notebook and you’re guaranteed they’ll be there to reminisce on forever (unless you lose your notebook, which we don’t recommend… at all!). Podcasts will save your life on long bus rides, train rides, flights, etc. Plus they’re a great way to keep learning and keep your mind sharp while on the road! Take a book, and when you’re finished, trade it for a new one at the next hostel you go to. APPS Maps.me: a brilliant app that allows you to download a map of a place and access it offline later. Perfect for when you’re arriving into a new city without internet access! XE – Currency Exchange: up to date currency rates and the ability to convert costs in real time – particularly handy when bargaining in a Cambodian market! Trabee Pocket: a dream app for any travel budgeting, Trabee allows you to plan your budget and manage your daily expenses so easily it’s ridiculous. You’ll never have any excuse for running out of money again! Check out ‘Appy Days’ – our ultimate guide to the travel apps you need LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF Travel is amazing – and amazingly tiring. No matter what everyone at home thinks, it’s not all lazing on beaches and soaking up the sun. Some days are extremely long and uncomfortable, you constantly have to be ‘switched on’ mentally, things can go wrong, and missing your loved ones and creature comforts can take its toll. Successful long term travel comes down to how well you look after yourself while on the road. Got sick on the road? Here’s our guide on how to survive! KEEP HEALTHY, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY How do you feel at home when you’re not exercising or sleeping enough, and eating poorly? Add in the intensity of travel, and you’ve got yourself a breeding ground for illnesses, exhaustion, and mental stress. Keep fit. Yes you’ll walk heaps, but also try to find different ways to exercise and get that heart rate up without needing a gym, such as yoga, or personalised workouts in a park. Get enough sleep (eye masks and earplugs are essential for noisy dorms!) Do your best to mix in some healthy options with all the amazing food you’re eating! Keep in touch with home. Sometimes the connection allowed us a good chat with our loved ones, other times we had a 10 second delay and a pixelated outline of their faces. No matter what, it was always worth it for time with the people we love best. BE KIND TO YOURSELF You’re never going to look very put together when you long-term travel. Some days you won’t shower, your clothes will be dirty or holey, and your hair will be fit for a bird to nest in. Embrace it, and remember the trade-off is beach hair, sun-kissed skin, and eyes that sparkle with adventure instead. Trying all the local food is great, but don’t feel like you’ve failed if you eat western food every now and then. We even wolfed down McDonalds AND KFC in Bangkok after spending 3 months sampling all the delicious food in SE Asia because we just needed something familiar. No regrets here! Take time to relax by yourself every now and then, especially if you’re travelling with another person. Bad things WILL happen. It’s how you handle them that matters. Stay positive, and try accept that just because things happen differently here, doesn’t mean they’re better or worse than at home. At the end of the day, it’s up to you how to travel the world. Whether you live by all these tips or not, always keep in mind that you’re one of the lucky few who gets to travel and experience the world outside your own front yard – that alone is amazing! CYNOPSISDIGITAL 01.05.17
Good morning. It’s Thursday January 5, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
TODAY’S CODEBREAKER
Pinned Tweet: When Twitter users select a certain tweet as their pinned tweet, that tweet remains in place at the top of their feed, as if it were their most recent tweet, until it is unpinned.
TOP NEWS
Hulu’s much-awaited internet-based live TV service now has a rough price point – and it’s pretty low. According to CEO Mike Hopkins, the service will come in at under $40 per month. AT&T’s competing service DirecTV Now, which debuted late last year, was initially said to have a $35-per-month price tag, but that turned out to be a temporary promotional offer. Not so with Hulu, Hopkins said; under $40 means under $40. Hopkins also said that the service will include Hulu’s $8 per month VOD offering, as well as a cloud-based DVR. It’s expected to launch in Q1.
ADVERTISING
After six months of beta testing, digital music service Pandora is set to widely roll out its newest ad format. The format enables marketers to replace album art with muted video and expandable display. Brands including Google, Lexus, and Express were on board for the initial test. The new ads emerge from beta on January 19.

PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
Over-the-air broadcast TV integration seems to be all the rage at CES. Mohu, a company best known for making its own antennas for free over-the-air TV, is announcing a new product that combines its core product with new streaming capabilities, allowing viewers to stream free TV broadcasts to mobile and connected-TV devices. The product, called Airwave, is slated to ship in May for a price of $150. It’ll first be available at Best Buy and via Mohu’s website. Around the time of the device’s launch, Mohu also plans to roll out apps for mobile devices, as well as for devices like Roku and Apple TV. This isn’t Mohu’s first time trying to market a smart TV tuner. The company tried to roll out a similar device, called Channels, in 2015, without finding much success. It seems the company is betting that cord-cutters will be more of a market force in 2017. Nuvyyo, maker of the Tablo DVR for cord-cutters, is getting on the bandwagon as well. At CES, the company is unveiling the Tablo Live stick, a device that lets users wirelessly stream over-the-air live TV to devices that have Tablo’s apps installed. It’s slated to go on sale in Q2 of this year, selling for $99. Tablo’s software is already available for a number of devices, including iOS and Android phones, and connected-TV platforms like Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. At launch, the device won’t be able to record broadcasts. But Nuvyyo is also previewing a new cloud DVR at CES, designed to let users store recordings from Tablo Live. No word yet on when it will debut or what it will cost.
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
IMAX announced that it’s getting ready to open a virtual reality center at the Grove, a well-known shopping center/farmer’s market in Los Angeles. Owned and operated by IMAX, the center will showcase games and other VR experiences on StarVR and HTC Vive headsets. The goal, said IMAX exec Rob Lister, is to test out different types of VR experiences, gauging which types of experiences users enjoy and how much they might be willing to pay for them. The company plans to open a second VR facility in London within a month or two, and to open up a total of six VR centers within the first two quarters of 2017, including one in Japan and one in China.
CYNOPSIS SALARY SURVEY
From geography to gender, all is not equal in the media world, according to the new Cynopsis Salary Survey. The Northeast offers top pay for Buyers/Planners ($94,800), Sales/Distribution ($138,700) and Research ($113,000), but the West is where it’s at to make top dollar in Programming ($126,900), Marketing/PR ($113,500) and Production ($126,200). And overall, there’s a $31,700 gap in annual salary between men and women – in some groups like Finance/Legal, the yearly difference can be as much as $50,000. Download the survey here for details on dollars, benefits, job satisfaction and more.
POLICY
The FCC’s 2016 privacy rules for Broadband providers, which prohibit Internet service providers from drawing on their subscribers’ prior behavior in ad targeting, were never popular with advertising trade groups. Now several of them have formally asked the FCC to reverse course. (The orgs in question: The Association of National Advertisers, the American Association of Advertising Agencies, the Data & Marketing Association, the Interactive Advertising Bureau, the Network Advertising Initiative, and the American Advertising Federation.) In a new petition, the groups argue that the FCC ruling “violates First Amendment protections of commercial speech.” The trade orgs needn’t worry: It’s a near certainty that the Commission’s soon-to-be Republican majority will overturn the ruling, which passed on a party line vote in October. Apple has removed all New York Times news apps from its app store in Mainland China. The tech giant says the move came at the request of the Chinese government. China started blocking the Times’ websites as far back as 2012, but had faced more difficulty when it came blocking the publication’s Chinese-language app. The Chinese government initially took issue with the Times after a series of 2012 articles examining the wealth of then-Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. News apps from the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, and other publications remain available. As for the Times, not quite everything has been blocked: The publication’s virtual reality and crossword puzzle apps are still available throughout China.
RESEARCH
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter,Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume). Streaming Series (12/26/16 – 1/1/16) Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows. @__IssaJoseph: Oh my gawwwwwwdd, this #RoseBowl game is insane Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from Dec. 28-Jan. 3 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 3,269,183 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include: – 66.9% of people who said something on TV was awkward were watching Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on ABC, with many commenting on Mariah Carey’s performance snafu. – 6.7% of viewers who talked about the craziness of something on TV were checking out the Rose Bowl on ESPN, where USC made a comeback over Penn State to take the win. – Excluding sports and specials, 8.7% of people who said they were thrilled by a TV show were watching Freeform’s new series Beyond. – 19.8% of viewers who said they had their mind blown by something on TV were tuned into UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey on pay-per-view, where Ronda Rousey was quickly knocked out.
TRIVIA
Who was the first comedian to be featured in a Netflix-exclusive stand-up special? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.) Our Last Trivia Question The timeframe of Arrested Development‘s 4th season was structured differently than that of the first 3. How so? Answer: Each episode focuses on an individual character, with each episode unfolding at roughly same time within the show’s universe. Kudos to David Westberg-Sag-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA and Adam S. Hacker-Tashmoo Productions/GA.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT
To navigate a VR world, users often have to rely on clunky, difficult to manipulate controllers. AT CES, California startup uSens introduced its solution: Fingo, a $100 tracking module that creates a virtual version of a user’s hand within VR and AR experiences. The virtual hand reflects the precise movements of users’ real hand motions, enabling them to more easily manipulate virtual objects. Fingo, uSens announced, is already compatible with Epson’s new developer-oriented AR glasses. For now the company’s goal is to add to the list, encouraging more headset-makers to integrate Fingo into their devices. The company raised $20 million in a series A funding round last summer. You can check out a very cool video of their new technology here.
