Thank you so much! The Witch of the East was a lot of fun to think about (since we never see her face in a lot of OZ media XD

Locasta the Good Witch of the North
Tumblr media
"Sala-gadoola-menchicka-boo-la bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!"
Oh, wrong movie. But this was the song I listened to when designing my Good Witch of the North, aka Locasta if we go by Baum's 1902 play.
Now the Good Witch of the North has often been erroneously attributed to Glinda thanks to the MGM movie and it's not helped by Wicked making Galinda hailing from the north. But in actuality, the Good Witch of the North is a separate character from Glinda, and is described to be a short, old kindly woman, with illustrations depicting her with purple eyes, white dress, and a golden magical wand with an N to signify her as the ruler of the North, Gillikin Country.
Now, it would be simple to just be super faithful to the original illustration, but I wanted to give my own spin on the interpretation and what Locasta came across to me. I used the original illustration as the basis, and began searching for other characters that fit her archetype. This included the Fairy Godmother from Disney's Cinderella, the Three Fairies from Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Mama Odie from Disney's The Princess and the Frog, Impa from The Legend of Zelda, Mrs. Claus from Rankin Bass holiday specials, and Miss One from The Wiz. Miss One in particular was a major influence to the final design because The Wiz was one of the few Oz-related works that remembered that there are two good witches and not just one (that and I happened to like Thelma Carpenter's performance as Miss One).
For colors, I initially used Tip's outfit as a basis for Locasta's outfit color scheme since both of them hail from the purple Gillikin Country. However, the intense purple didn't work for me. It looked good for a mayor, but this wasn't the aura I got from Locasta. Her outfit in the books was shiny white and gives a fairy-like aura. So I masked the original color scheme with a white coating and then switch the lighting to Luminosity on Procreate.

🥂 Ozma and Dorothy!
🥂 - How was their first date?
So in my take on the events of The Wizard of Oz, Tip actually meets Dorothy right after the house lands on the Witch of the East, and she stepped out of the house. (Mombi was going to have a meeting with said witch, and she dragged Tip along in order to avoid losing the servant boy to a nosy neighbor.) Needless to say, after Dorothy got the lowdown from the Good Witch of the North, a big celebration is held and Tip and Dorothy spend most of the day and evening partaking in the celebrating of the demise of the Wicked Witch of the East. Think something along the lines of the Kingdom Dance sequence from Tangled. Eventually, it's time for Dorothy to head to the Emerald City and Tip to head back to Gilikin Country, but not without a gift for the other.
When the princess of Oz takes back her throne, I imagine that their first date is very similar in the sense of they spend the day together during a celebration or festival of sorts, filled with food, dancing, and just being in each other's company.
And as a Bonus, here's Mombi and the Good Witch watching the children bond with one already shipping it and the other not pleased with being undermined and having her meeting canceled.

I know Glinda loves her architecture in the books. So it seemed only fair to draw her in a pretty room!

You may have guessed I’m finally at the last book. I loved reading Glinda’s POV in the first chapter, which inspired me to draw this piece.

My Ozian Witch redesigns except they’re really bad IbisPaint X sketches I made
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their names are Cortana, Caliga, Glinda (dub) and Fiora. I tried keeping to their countries signature colours but since I haven’t read the original books I can’t say for sure they’re accurate.
Update: Looking back in post I think I might’ve swapped the North and East’s colour palettes.
Update 2: Fiora is fucking purple. 💀

The Good Witches of Oz (1)
With the old year I concluded my series about the Wicked Witch of the West... With this New Year, I will open a series about the Good Witch of Oz, of course!
But which Good Witch? While with the West Witch we have a clear "tree" (one original, which branched into several continuities), with the Good Witch of Oz things are VERY very confused, thanks to the MGM movie mixing up the original two Good Witches of Oz, resulting into many separate "lines"...
But let's start at the beginning: with the very first Good Witch of Oz, who is... No, not Glinda! But rather The Good Witch of the North herself, the actual first Good Witch that Dorothy meets. Unnamed in the original novels, Locasta if you follow the Baum stage-canon, Tattypoo if you prefer ulterior books of the Famous Forty.
As with the Wicked Witch of the West, the Good Witch of the North's design in "popular culture" was very influenced by Denslow's drawings for the "Wizard of Oz" novel :

It helps that Denslow stayed mostly faithful to Baum's description of the Witch (unlike with the Wicked Witch of the West were he had more creative freedom). Denslow' influence over the art of Oz is notably seen in the recurring presence of the "N" ornated staff, a detail invented by Denslow and not present in Baum's text. Many ulterior artists did correct an omission from the original illustrations: they added the famous sparkling stars that Baum described and Denslow did not draw...

Also, a brief shout-out to the Splendor Book version of The Wizard of Oz where the Good Witch's face is kept hidden for some ~ominous~ effect

Been doodling.
And I have been doodling the witches from the wizard of Oz.
All of these are Amalgamations of different versions of the witches I have seen mixed with headcannon, and how I intend to draw them for a personal project in the future.
Good witch of the north and west are a lot younger then the original books, but are more in line with the 1930s technicolor film. ( I mean iconic for a reason) as well as their portrayals in the book / musical Wicked.
Wicked witch of the west has a cape that can act as wings and her eyes are bright green in color. Her skin is more of a green tint then outright green. But it’s noticeable. She is also wearing an eyepatch.
I have backstory for all of them that is a horrid amalgamation of several different cannons fused together. I might share that at some other time.
Glinda the good witch of the south is black and beautiful, based on the illustrations from a tabletop rpg I have. I also sort of just imagine her as black. She’s the most powerful of the witches to my understanding of the source material. But she had some sort of agreement with the other witches that dose not let her interfere most of the time.
Witch of the east is wearing a Munchkin hat, and the silver slippers (with ruby red ribbons). Originally I started coloring the bells yellow and gold, but then I realized they should probably be silver like the shoes. I tried to fix it but ended up with this odd brass color. I’ll correct it in the future.
I was really tempted at making the wicked witch of the east a redhead. But I decided against it.
Now all witches wear white. It’s the color of witches but as rulers of their respective countries in the land of Oz their clothes also reflect the color of the country they rule over.
Gilligens=purple
Vinkus=yellow
Quadling=red
Munchkin =blue
I’ll probably share the other doodles I have at some later date. For now I will happily share these.
(Also if you are drawing wizard of oz fanart feel free to use these designs!)

Designing the Good Witch of the North better known as "Glinda" as a possible character in my VN - The Trial of The Wizard.
Edit: I made a mistake 😅 her name is apparently Locasta. I really gotta finish the rest of these books.
