THIS.
For all his posturing Crowley knows damn good and well why Aziraphale pushes back.
He asked for the holy water with a note because “hell the trees have ears”
He avoids the bookshop when the other angels come round.
He *knows*
Asking Aziraphale to go away with him is Crowley’s “I love you”
Aziraphale telling him “not yet” and searching for every bit of plausible deniability is his “I love you”
And they have been doing this dance for thousands of years.
Yes, I believe they have serious communication issues, how could they not after the double life they’ve had to live for so long? But they’ve been in it together.
There is no universe in which I think Crowley is the type to make Aziraphale debase himself for doing exactly the sort of thing that is the reason Crowley fell for him in the first place.
And Aziraphale is soft, yes. But it is because he chooses to be. Has always chosen to be. He gives away the sword, he offers comfort, he learns, he does better. He has seen through the machinations of Heaven for a long, long time. His bravery is steadfast and contiguous with his compassion for humanity.
Aziraphale loves Crowley as he is. Because Crowley is what Heaven should have been and isn’t.
Crowley is kind and he is curious and he is thoughtful and caring. Yes he hides it beneath his Emo-goth cosplay. But Aziraphale loves the whole of him.
Do not come for the cinnamon roll who will save the world. He is doing the best he can with what he has and has nothing to ask forgiveness for and I will die on that hill.
Aziraphale does not...
Aziraphale does not need to learn and see how awful Heaven is

He suffered and cried enough (and so did Crowley)
He does not need to explain to Crowley why he spent millennia 'pretending' they are not friends, he does not need to apologise for this

Crowley knows why.

Aziraphale does not need to apologise for how he'd turned Crowley away again and again, how he kept his distance, for 'you go too fast for me, all of that, was an expression of the deep love he has for the demon
Tumblr media
And Crowley knows they can't really run away. Not for long. Not when the whole Universe is set to be destroyed when the Earth is done with. Not when they are always watched.
Aziraphale does not need to Fall to understand Crowley or be worthy to be with him or to understand anything better. Crowley is not more free than Aziraphale.
Tumblr media
Besides, Crowley loves him as the angel he is. And Aziraphale loves Crowley exactly as he is. A demon. A demon with a soft heart.
Tumblr media
Crowley doesn't want Aziraphale to change. And Aziraphale doesn't want Crowley to change either. (Also here and here)
BONUS
Crowley is IMO not completely self-destructing because Aziraphale left. I think he understands why he did. And I think he will help Aziraphale willingly and quickly, no apology musical or grovelling required. Because Crowley loves Earth too. Almost as much as he loves his angel.
Tumblr media
It's not like S1 when the world was about to end and Aziraphale was gone.
Aziraphale is gone because the world is about to end. And that was the case in S1 too, Crowley just didn't know it (when he was drinking in the pub). He does now. He helped when he found out Az was back, and he will again.

Love how S2 came along and turned Crowley's already sweetly empty threat into that plus now bonus devastating, romantic twist revealing that there's nowhere in the universe where Crowley could ever go where he'd ever not think of Aziraphale because, funny story, they met putting the stars in the sky.

“You idiot.” grumbled Crowley, snuggling his flesh against the angel’s palm, pulling the linens up in an attempt to cover his face. “How can you think I lost interest?” he seemed incredulous, shaking his head lightly.
“Well, forgive me for assuming, but you never did do it again. One can be forgiven for thinking...” Aziraphale offered a soft smile, looking sheepish, letting his hand slide off of Crowley’s angular cheek, the limb sagging as the disappointment of his conclusion flooded his chest, his tone betraying how quickly the sorrow of the denouement was evaporating the ethanol from his veins.
“Because the first time went so bloody well, didn’t it.” Crowley’s tone was a tad bitter now, his gaze averting the angel’s as he reminisced on what could likely amount to the worst day of his six thousand years of demonhood.
Aziraphale sighed, scrunching his nose.

Now I have George Michael’s ‘Faith’ stuck in my head and I SECOND THIS
I am personally SO HAPPY about Good Omens 3 not being cancelled. I hate that everyone is writing it off before they see it. I trust Micheal Sheen and David Tennant to play their characters wonderfully as they always do. 90 minutes is a lot more than you think.
If you think it can’t be done? Let’s put it into perspective:
- The Nightmare Before Christmas (75 minutes)
- Toy Story (81 minutes)
- Stand By Me (89 minutes)
- My Neighbor Totoro (86 minutes)
HAVE FAITH GOOD OMENS FANS. HAVE FAITH. WE CAN DO THIS.

Great analysis. Also the reblogger has compiled reactions from people who just finished S2 and if you want validation, hustle over there right now.

Good Omens final fifteen + Clues
my thoughts under the cut:
I finally finished ep 6 and while picking up the pieces of my broken heart, these are what I think are Clues (Aziraphale's voice):
"give me coffee or give me death" - there's such significance to the way Metatron asked the question, it simply cannot be a throwaway line, especially when he later asks Aziraphale "will you take it?" when handing him the coffee cup. He doesn't say "take it" or simply shoves it at him which would be typical of heaven, but he gives Aziraphale a choice (coffee or death) - in other words, Aziraphale makes the choice but under the threat of death (something Metatron knew he would do, because Nina says "they never choose death" and he says "how predictable" ie. he knew exactly how this would go down)
prior to this Aziraphale has never drunk coffee, only tea and alcohol. He doesn't understand why Crowley would drink coffee when he's already stressed. In other words, the coffee itself is forced on Aziraphale - it seems that he has a choice ("will you take it?") but is it really a choice if his other option is death?
At no point does Aziraphale say "yes" - even when he's walking back to Crowley he says "I don't know what to say" - he's nowhere as excited as he pretends to be the moment he enters the bookshop. In fact, the entire walk over (with the Metatron watching him carefully), he's pensive and deeply troubled, almost like walking to his doom (which clashes with the cheery, almost romantic music that plays here, which adds subtext to the situation, that all is not what it seems to be)
Aziraphale's expression the moment the Metatron brings Crowley up and issues his subtle threat ("irregular"); the way his lips thin and he swallows and he instantly knows what this is all about ("give me coffee OR give me death")
Aziraphale's many many looks out of the window after Crowley has left and his repressed grief and outrage that he quickly masks everytime he looks back at the Metatron. I don't think it's just heartbreak and wanting to go after Crowley - I think something else is going on
tldr: Aziraphale chose the coffee Metatron presented to him because the alternative was death (for him and/or Crowley) and he is furious. Aziraphale's comments on heaven and it being good etc. are not because he's still fixated on that ideology, but it's the only way Aziraphale saw them being safe and together (the other option: death). The tragedy is that Crowley saw Aziraphale making an active choice to take heaven over them being together - but he didn't see why Aziraphale was making that choice (and if it was a choice at all). Earlier, Crowley said "What does your exactly mean? I feel like your exactly and my exactly are different exactlys" - the way they have failed to communicate throughout the millennial (as pointed out by Nina and Maggie) comes to a head here - in this situation with the Metatron watching, Aziraphale can't communicate exactly what's going on, and Crowley doesn't understand what he means because they have not properly communicated before what their "together" means - "run off together" vs "we can be together, angels" are not afterall, different togethers - once again, they're trying to save each other so they can be together, but the methods are different and the perspectives are different (ie. Crowley knows about the book of life threat vs Aziraphale knows about the Metatron "irregular" threat and neither knows what the other fears)

You never know! I'd say this connects to there being a few Christmas story references in S2. It seems like they're using the complicated relationship with Christmas that a lot of people have and the pressures its impending return can bring as one of the ways they're talking about the mental health issues at the heart of the season.
Tumblr media
TW: brief mention of suicide ideation
It's A Wonderful Life: The Book of Life bit mentioned above being kinda like this story, plus the allusion through Muriel's thirty-whatever-order scrivener ranking being like how they refer to Clarence in the film. S2 also begins with Crowley & Aziraphale as angels in the sky, which is kind of similar to the start of the film.
It's A Wonderful Life is a film set at Christmas but that is about unchecked anxiety and depression. It is about mental health issues and suicide and uses the common elements of a person's suicide narrative as the foundation for telling a story that talks about those issues and seeks to have them be better understood by its audience. It is the most famous (and probably most impactful) story ever done like this. It fits into S2 thematically because we're watching Aziraphale go a bit George Bailey.
Not coincidentally, it's the second famous work of art centered around suicide to be referenced in S2-- this one talking about PTSD and suicide. The other is Salinger's "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." It's not Christmas-related but it is thematically related to S2.
A Christmas Carol: Aziraphale as Fezziwig to Nina's Young Scrooge:
Tumblr media
If it's been a minute since you read or watched A Christmas Carol, Mr. Fezziwig was the beloved former employer of a young Ebenezer Scrooge. He is only in the story briefly but is one of the most lovable characters in it. Scrooge adored him and had fond memories of working for him. Fezziwig was the fair and equitable employer that an adult Scrooge is not-- he treated Scrooge and the others well, genuinely cared about them, and made sure they were well-provided for. The Fezziwigs are examples of responsible, morally sound business owners-- they make a good living and live comfortably but not at the expense of their employees, suppliers, customers, etc.. They genuinely care about the people around them and are generous with their time, money, material resources, and affection.
What Scrooge remembers is how kind Fezziwig was to him and how encouraging. He would put Scrooge's anxieties at ease, as we see him do in the story when he encourages Scrooge to stop working, and then turns his business into a Christmas party full of food and dancing and romance. This is what Aziraphale is trying to do for Nina and Maggie with The Meeting Ball.
Fezziwig encourages the people around him to embrace life and one another and enjoy their lives. He shown to be very happily married; he and Mrs. Fezziwig are a kind, true pair-- madly in love, still flirting and dancing together happily at the party.
Aziraphale wants to be Fezziwig. In every way that matters, he already is, but this scene in S2 gives impression that this party is also about Aziraphale trying to give himself permission to just go ahead and embrace his inner Fezziwig. He's already the type of business owner and person that Fezziwig is (even if he'll stress that he's not good enough because that's Aziraphale) but he's never been able to actually have this Christmas party of his dreams before.
This angel has longed to be able to make this scene in the book happen in real life for the people around him. It's his secret dream to just close down the street, give everyone some food and music, help the young people fall in love, and dance with his beloved spouse at their Christmas party. To be among everyone and part of their lives without fear, open about who he is and openly enjoying the life he and his partner made together. He's got Fezziwig on the brain when Nina talks to him about how she feels, showing that The Meeting Ball is really Jane Austen meets Dickens.
The Final 15 is also a lot like what if no ghosts visited a non-redemptive Scrooge [Our Villain] and he just was full on evil instead of redeemable and then he showed up on "Christmas Day" (the day after Aziraphale's Fezziwig's "Christmas Eve" party) to Fred/Bob Cratchit [Aziraphale] anyway and just lied his ass off about wanting to redeem himself to manipulate?
Tumblr media
Elf: Burning down toxic masculinity bullshit and talking about benefits of mindful living, emotional availability, and creative outlets as prescriptive for depression by having a character who lacks social dynamic understanding of the world around him but approaches that world with an openness, a gentleness, and an enthusiastic sense of wonder that patriarchal societies teach men is "unmasculine"... am I talking about Buddy the Elf or am I talking about Jimbriel?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In light of the recent Christmas jumpers worn by Rob Wilkins, I thought of the clues the story in S2 left for us that yes, S3 might take place during Christmas.
If anyone else hasn't listed this one yet, the Metatron says "wrap things up" near the end of S2.
I remembered way back to my post about Crowley being summoned to Hell by Beelzebub.
I remarked:
There's an "It's a Wonderful Life" reference here, I realize...With this concept of erasing someone from the Book of Life, I'm inclined to think that a person wiped from existence cannot learn "a lesson" because they don't exist anymore! But wait. That is what happened in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life". The angel Clarence showed the human George Bailey a reality where he, George Bailey, no longer existed because he had never been born. George learned "a lesson" about the value of his own life.
I did acknowledge it might be foreshadowing and didn't think it would be particularly interesting, but "It's a Wonderful Life" is a well-known Christmas movie, so this prospect has become at least a little more likely in my eyes.
We might (briefly?) see a reality without Crowley, Aziraphale, or both, with their roles in Eden.

Sitting here watching s2xe5 and it’s the scene where Crowley is asking Aziraphale why his French is so bad and he says “I went to Monsieur Rossignol’s night classes in 1760”.
I decided to Google if this was a real person since the name wasn’t familiar to me, and instead I had my giant gay heart stomped on by Neil Gaiman once again.
The French word for nightingale: Rossignol
It’s the language of romance and Aziraphale took night classes with a Mr. Nightingale. I CAN’T BREATHE.
