Reaper had woken up at 3 am, feeling like ice and shaking from head to toe. It was going to be a bad day. He would shiver for a while, then the pain would set in, leaving him immobile for at least 18 hours, maybe more. He slowly ambled to his bathroom to piss before he could no longer get up to do so. He glanced into the mirror and saw that his face was ashen and his eyes were already going hollow. It was going to be a very bad day.
By 5:30 am Reaper was sweating into his pillow and gripping the blankets around him desperately. He hurt everywhere. He was panting and vomiting by 6:30. Dry heaving by 7 am. Sometimes his chest was the epicenter of the pain, sometimes his back, sometimes his throat. For a few hours he would be burning up, then suddenly heâd feel so cold his limbs would go numb. Sometimes it was just agony, plain and simple. Every time he looked at the clock the disappointment would set in. It was only 9 am? How?
His body began to fall apart around 10:30 am. As Reaper huffed, billows of fog would float off from him, but only when overheated. When he was cold, wispy tendrils would wiggle from his body and cling to the bedding. There were times when he could feel his skin peeling off and shedding, or his hair falling from its follicles. His mouth would sprout an extra row of teeth every once in a while â sometimes sharp, sometimes not. Heâd nearly bit his tongue off twice today and had torn the inside of his cheek open. His nails would grow too long then become frail and break down to the bed. His skin would tear at the slightest movement, like turning on to his side. His innards would lurch and bloat and wither, making him grip his guts and writhe. The worst of it came when he sprouted extra irises. He would open his eyes and the world would be jumbled in the most sickening way. What he wouldnât give to just curl up and die, right here and now.
Around 1 pm his phone buzzed yet again. Heâd ignored Akande and Sombraâs messages, but when Sonyaâs name popped up, he smiled just the smallest bit. Sheâd swiped his phone last week and taken a silly picture for her contact photo. Even with her eyes crossed she was damn pretty. He swiped across the screen and left a smear of blood. âChrist,â he hissed wiping the sinew off on the sheets.
âHey Reaper. You doing alright? I still have lunch on the stove if you want to come by,â her text read.
âFuck,â he growled with a cough. More blood. Perfect. Heâd forgotten all about their plans.
âSorry mija. Sick. Reschedule soon?â He hit send and sighed. Somehow, Reaper had found another reason to hate being feeble like this â it kept him from his precious girl.
âSick? Shit. You need anything? I can bring some food by,â she sent back.
âCouldnât keep it down. Iâll be fine. See you soon.â A slick black tendril was slithering over his hand and he shook it off grumpily.
âAlright. Let me know if you need anything. And take care of yourself, ok? Widowmaker is doing this weird thing where she just hangs upside down from the ceiling from her grappling hook and watches people. Itâs freaking me out. She was in the lab for half an hour. Staring at me. The people we work with, man. . .â
He snorted at her response and shuddered in pain. âIâll let you know when Iâm better. We can discuss Amelieâs infinite weirdness then.â
âYes please!â
Poor Sonya, facing the Talon crazies on her own. Although, as much as Reaper hated to admit it, Akande would keep an eye on her. He always did.
Reaper closed his eyes and tried to sleep, which was probably pointless, but what the hell else was he going to do? Another few hours passed slowly, fitfully. He almost texted his daughter a dozen times, if only for a distraction, but he didnât want her to know how mangled he was right now. How weak. She counted on him to have her back, to look out for her. Not to lay in bed looking like a monster. But luckily, she texted him around 4:30 pm.
âHey tuff stuff. Hope Iâm not waking you up. Maybe I shouldnât say this, but Sombra said something about you having real bad pain sometimes? And you have to hole away for a day or so? I wasnât going to bother you, but I gotta ask â you okay? I guess she got me worked up and Iâm really kinda super worried about you.â
âMi princesa,â he whispered before keying out another message. âYou donât ever have to worry about me Sunshine. Iâll be fine.â
âPromise?â
âI promise.â
âYou SURE you donât need anything? I just happened to make chicken and noodle soup today â homemade broth, egg noodles, the works! I know you donât eat much, but I could bring you some for when youâre feeling up for it. I got tea and honey, too. And booze! And that really dark chocolate you like! I could bring you the weighted blanket I just bought too. Thing is made of magic, I swear.â
He smiled and thought for a long time, long enough for her to send another text.
âI just want you to be okay. I want to help if I can. I know what its like to be sick and alone. It blows.â
âOh fine,â Reaper grumbled. âShe wants to see me, I want to see her. But sheâs not coming in my room. Iâll scare the shit out of her.â His fingers flew over the touchscreenâs tiny keys before he could change his mind. âAlright, mija. You convinced me. You can come by and drop off some soup and chocolate, but no blanket. Iâll just make it gross. Just leave the food in the fridge and Iâll get it when Iâm doing better. Canât see me though. Iâm a mess.â
She got right back to him. âBe there in ten!â And she was. Did she run across the compound? Or did she have a little care package ready for him? He heard the ding of his homeâs buzzer and used his phone to open the front door. He couldnât hear her moving around, but he felt better knowing she was close. After a few moments there was a light rapping at his bedroom door.
âReaper,â she called softly, âyou in there?â
âYeah.â His voice was rougher than usual, even for him.
âI put the soup away along with some crackers. And maybe some liquor,â she said quietly.
He grinned. God, she was a good kid. âThanks, Sonya.â
âYou want anything right now? Chocolate? Tea? I can leave it by the door if you want.â
Chocolate sounded like heaven. Maybe he wouldnât be able to taste it much, but he was willing to pretend today. âChocolate,â he choked out.
âAw, Reaper,â she cooed, âyou sound fucking awful. Iâll leave the candy bar here, but Iâm making you some tea, too, if only to make myself feel like Iâm doing something worthwhile.â
âAlright,â he chuckled. He sat up slowly and cringed, but at least he could stand being upright, that was impressive. With a deep breath, he hoisted himself to his feet. That was a mistake. Reaper let out a small cry before falling to the floor in a heap, gulping and writhing.
âReaper,â Sonya called from the hall, voice heavy with fear. âReaper!â
He wanted to tell her that he was fine, to go home and pretend she hadnât heard anything, but he couldnât. He had no strength left.
Light flooded the room as Sonya came into view. Reaper looked up at her horrified face for a moment before turning away in shame. âIâm . . . okay,â he lied feebly.
âNo, Reaper,â she said kneeling beside him, âyouâre not. Let me help you up.â
He meekly pushed her hand away. âNo, Sonya, go. Iâm in a bad place. Just leave me be.â
âIâm not going anywhere and Iâm not going to let you just lay on the floor! Now donât make me ask again.â Despite her firm words, it sounded as if his daughter was about to cry. He hated himself for bringing her to tears.
Sonya wrapped her arm around his sweaty torso and slowly heaved him up. She was stronger than hell. They sat down on the bed together and Reaper slumped forward.
âIâve got ya,â Sonya said holding his arm, he nodded a silent thanks. She waited patiently as he caught his breath.
âI need to lie down,â he admitted sheepishly. Sonya stood and let him curl up on the disheveled mattress.
She crouched next to him and rubbed his shoulder. âYou hot or cold, tuff stuff?â
âCold, for now.â
She squeezed him and headed for the living room. âBe right back.â
âNo,â he protested again, but she shushed him and waved her hand dismissively. She came back with a dark red blanket and draped it over him.
âThere, isnât that better? It doesnât even ruin your shadowy aesthetic.â Her smirk was his whole world.
âBetter,â he agreed, eyelids growing heavier.
âTell me if you get hot, âkay?â He nodded. âIâm gonna stay for a while and keep an eye on you. And Iâm not asking for permission â Iâm telling you,â she said sitting beside him.
âYou donât have to do that, Sonya,â Reaper said burrowing into to the pillow.
âI want to,â she said putting her hand over his. He brought it to his lips and pressed a small kiss to the back of her palm. He wanted her to stay, too.
Sonya stayed by his side for hours on end, only leaving when Reaper asked for something â covers on, covers off, a rag for his forehead, a cool towel for his neck. At some point, she had turned on some peaceful music that managed to help take is his mind off his fraying body. She told him little stories about nothing in particular when he asked. Hearing her speak was a comfort in of itself. Eventually, the pain began to subside and the exhaustion took over. He slept better than he had in a long time, much better than he usually did after a day like this.
When he finally awoke, Reaper was whole and healing â no smoke, no tendrils, but he was far more aware of something else. He hadnât been wearing his mask. Still lying in bed, he ran his fingers over his face worriedly, making a few lingering strips of dead skin fall off. How much had Sonya seen? It was dark, but not that dark. She must have seen the grisly scars and the bloodshot eyes. Heâd been at his bodily worse, so she likely saw his multiple pupils and rows of fangs. Cursing under his breath, Reaper started hunting for his phone. He needed to apologize, but a soft, high-pitched moan stopped him dead.
He twisted over and saw Sonya sleeping by the edge of the mattress, a small pillow from the couch under her messy black hair and a thin throw covering her upper body. Reaper couldnât help but smile. Such a beautiful, stubborn, loyal girl heâd made.
Moving as silently as he could, Reaper slid off the mattress and grabbed a change of clothes before heading to the shower. He was filthy. Sonya was still asleep when he emerged. It was pretty early. He had time to make breakfast â she deserved at least that much. Just as he was topping the pile of eggs with cheese Reaper heard a yawn from behind him and the shuffle of sleepy feet.
âMorning, Sunshine,â he grinned.
She laughed, âYou love calling me âSunshineâ when you can make a corny joke out of it, donât you?â
âWell of course,â he said as if it were completely obvious.
Sonya snorted and stood next to him by the warm pan of food. âI guess youâre feeling alright?â
âNot 100%, but infinitely better than yesterday,â he said rubbing her back for a moment, âthanks to you.â
âIâm just happy youâre not dying on me,â she said leaning closer.
Reaper set down the spatula and turned to her, face still uncovered, still exposed, but comfortable. âThank you for taking care of me, mija. I donât know how I got by before you.â
She flushed and shrugged. âI do what I can.â
He put a hand on her arm and planted a kiss on her forehead. âIâm so glad I find you,â he mumbled, holding her close just a second longer than he needed to.
âIâm glad you found me, too.â Sonya roped her arm into his and rested her head on his shoulder as he finished cooking. They stayed in his apartment for a while longer, hiding from the rest of Talon, taking the time to enjoy being together.
âBy the way,â she said on her way out, âyour face isnât that fucked up.â
He shook his head with a smile and rolled his eyes, âGee thanks.â
âAll I mean is that Iâm not scared of you,â she said smacking his arm, âso if you donât want to wear that mask on our next movie night, thatâs fine by me. To be honest, I sorta liked seeing you like this. I finally know where I got these proud cheekbones from.â
He grinned and put his hands on either side of her face. âYup, thatâs all me. And youâre welcome for them, mi rayito de sol.â

Into the night - Chapter 90
Jordanâs hands were trembling so hard when she fished her phone out of her bag, that it nearly clattered on the floor, she was just so nervous, it was like she needed to suppress a second heart attack or something and it was all because of Jaredâs cold behaviour, no matter how she tried to lock eyes with him, he just kept ignoring her like she wasnât even there. Did he even want her here? Did he even want to prove Amanda wrong anymore? âMiss McLeod?â the judgeâs stern voice jerked her out of her daze, âYes..ok, Iâve recorded this on my phone so I hope the quality is ok, the man youâre gonna hear is Cedric Lafayette..â she cranked up the volume and then clicked on the recording. âI just turned the tables on him and one drunken night I ended up in bed with Amanda, one of his groupies, it was a fair deal, she wanted to get back with Jared and I wanted to get back with Charlotteâ hearing Cedricâs voice roll through the eerily silent room had Jaredâs blood freezing in his veins, he couldnât move, he couldnât speak, it felt like his heart was getting ripped out of his chest. 'Amanda showed up pregnant and all on Charlotteâs doorstep, telling her that it was Jaredâs baby she was carrying and that finally burst Charlotteâs rosy bubble..so Amanda got what she wanted and so did I..just knowing he is now raising the child of his biggest enemy, MY child, is fucking hilarious, that bastard deserves to burnâ. A shockwave of simultaneous shocked gasps vibrated through the room and in the corner of her eye Jordan could see Amanda go burgundy red. The judge nervously shuffled in her seat and cleared her throat âRight, well, I think it is only fair to say that is all the proof we need to clear Mr. Letoâs name and to drop all charges against him, weâll be getting in touch with our European colleagues for further questioning and a possible trial of Mr. Lafayetteâ. An outburst of joy and relief flew through the room behind her and while everyone started hugging and high-fiving each other, Jordan felt dizzy and that didnât go unnoticed by Shannon but just when he wanted to go check on her, the judge swung her little hammer against the wooden bench a few times to get everyoneâs attention "I do understand the excitement, but thereâs something else I need to sayâ she adressed the room but then looked straight at Jordan who was still standing in front of her âMiss McLeod..even though you went to great lenghts to let the truth and justice prevail, Iâm afraid Iâm going to have to arrest you for breaking the law by abducting your nephew Noah McLeod, leaving the country a few times while you were strictly forbidden to do so, so Miss McLeod, you leave this court no other choice than to put you under arrest and you will be held in custody until your trialâ another swing of the little hammer sealed her fate. âWhat? No! Please! I beg you, let me explain, Iâm all Noahâs got, he needs me..â she panicked when she saw the two security gorillas come walking up to her, this was not happening, this was all a bad dream. The judge seemed to be deaf to her pleas and when she felt the two pair of big hands grab hold of her, she started struggling and kicking like a wild cat but to no avail. âNoah..no, let me go, Noah..â she called out in despair as she was dragged out of the room, âaunt Jordan, aunt Jordaaaannn, where are you going?!â Noah cried in a panic when he saw his aunt being forced away from him. âJared..look after Noah, please? Pleasseeee!! Noah, I love you!â her sharp, animalistic cry rang across the room before she dissapeared out of sight and the huge door fell shut with a bang leaving the courtroom in a shock. âAunt Jordanâ Noah ran after her, banging his fists against the doors she had dissapeared behind, crying his heart out. The desperate sobs of the boy was the first thing in days that got Jared out of his daze âNoah..hey, come hereâ he ran over to the boy and scooped him up in his arms who instantly started struggling and banging his little fists on Jaredâs chest âNo, I want my aunt Jordanâ Noah screeched relentlessly while he quickly carried the boy out of the courtroom, instantly followed by Shannon, nobody needed to see this. The paps though seemed to think differently as they ran straight into a barrage of flashing lights and inappropriate questions about Jordanâs arrest. âGet him in the carâ Jared handed a wailing Noah over to his brother as he quickly fished his keys out of his pants and opened the car jumping behind the wheel and revved the engine.
Even behind the tinted windows of the car, he was blinded by the cameras that circled around his car and he could barely see where he was going but still he put his foot on the gas, he couldnât care less if he ran over some pap, damn vultures deserved to get run over. Noah, who was in the backseat and inconsolable, kept calling for his aunt âAunt Jordan, I want my aunt Jordan, we canât leave without her, aunt Jordaaaaanâ wildly kicking around with tears of anger and frustration running down his bright red cheeks. âHappy now? I donât believe you sometimesâ Shannon hissed at his brother, âShut up Shannon, no of course Iâm not happy..just make him stop will ya?â Jared sneered at him without taking his eyes off the road. âHey buddy, sshhh, itâs alright, weâre just gonna drive home ok? Just calm down a bit..itâs gonna be okâ Shannon turned in his seat and grabbed Noahâs little leg, patting it gently, âis my aunt going to be home too?â Noah hiccuped through his tears, his faith in grown-ups was clearly dwindling. âUhmm, no, buddy, sheâs not going to be there..â Shannon slowly shook his head, his heart breaking into a million pieces when he saw the young boy curling up into a ball on the backseat, crying his heart out and thatâs how he stayed for the entire journey home. Constance was waiting for them when the car drove up Jaredâs driveway, âWhereâs Jordan?â she hurried over to Shannon who got out of the car first to open Noahâs door and carry him inside, âIn jail..I swear, Mom, I canât stand the look of him anymore so Iâm just going to get Noah settled first before I do anything stupid like ripping my brotherâs head offâ. Constance gasped in shock and instantly her hand grabbed that of the young boyâs in Shannonâs arms, the despair in the boyâs red-rimmed eyes when he only lifted his head for a few seconds to look at her, broke her heart. âHey sweetie, Iâm Constance, Iâm Shannon and Jaredâs mother, donât be scared, ok? Youâre safe here with us, I promiseâ she gave him a warm smile as Shannon carried him inside the house and then turned to her other son âwhat happened, Jared..what the hell happened?â she nervously asked. âNot now, Mom, itâs been a long day..â Jared quickly circled the car trying to dodge his motherâs angry glare, âNot now?!! are you frikkinâ kidding me? What the hell is going on here? Emma called to tell me that Jordan showed up in court and got you off the hook and now I have to hear from Shannon that sheâs in jail?â she stomped inside following her youngest son. Jared threw his keys on the kitchen counter and walked over to his fridge to get himself a drink and calm his rattled nerves âThey arrested her for kidnapping Noah, ok? There was nothing I could do, she knew she had it comingâ Jared said in a monotone voice. Contance could hardly believe her own ears, only a few days ago he had told her how much he loved that girl and now he sounded like he hardly knew her. âShe had it coming? Really Jared? And nothing you could do? More like there was nothing you wanted to do!â Shannon came walking into the kitchen as well âgo on, tell her everything, she deserves to know, why donât you start by telling Mom how you got your ego bruised by the fact that Jordan spent time with Cedric, huh? Instead of calling her and giving her time to explain, because if you had then none of this would have happened! You and that goddamn ego of yours got her into this mess, nothing else, and what upsets me even more is that you refuse to see it, that girl was the only one who had the goddamn balls to dive head first into the lionâs den and she did it only to clear your name and Charlotteâs name, she couldnât bear to see you suffer any more than you already have, nobody else has ever done that, not even me or Mom or Tom for that matter because none of us would have had the nerve but she did and how do you repay her? You let her rot and die in a prison cell?â he shouted at his brother.
âLeft..right..frontâ Jordan reluctantly followed the orders as she had her photo taken, everybody here was shouting at her like she was public enemy number one, âok, youâre coming with meâ a man said to her and roughly grabbed her arm, dragging her down a long hall until they reached what could only be described as a concrete cubicle with a massive iron door âinsideâ he barked and pushed her into the small box, uncuffing her before he walked out and the door fell shut behind him. She just stood there looking at her new surroundings..this was not happening, this was all just a crazy nightmare she was going to wake up from..no she wasnât..maybe if she was lucky then her heart would finally give up on her and she would never have to wake up again. Crying she sat down on the concrete bench that was hooked into the wall and curled up into a fetal position, not knowing if Noah was ok was driving her crazy, she could only hope that Jared had taken him home with him, the thought of Noah being brought to some orphanage until the trial was simply unbearable.
On the other side of the city, the doorbell rang right through the overheated conversation and Jared who had been under his brotherâs attack pushed himself away from the kitchen counter, âMr. Leto? I had some trouble finding the addressâ a man surrounded by suitcases greeted him, handing him Jordanâs handbag âMiss McLeod said she wanted to have these delivered here, but since I got a little lost..anyway, she said there was some very important medication in this bag, so I hope Iâm still in time and she hasnât needed it yet?â. Jared stared at the man dumbfounded but when he took her bag from the man, it was like a jolt of electricity coursed through his body and brought him back to reality âyeah, no..itâs fine, thanksâ he mumbled as he handed the man a few dollars and let him carry the suitcases inside. âAunt Jordan?â Noah suddenly came running down the stairs âis she here?â he raced towards the door that Jared was closing again, âNoah..â Jared tried to calm him down by pulling him away from the door. âBut that is my bag and..that is aunt Jordanâs handbag, where is she? Why didnât you let her in?â Noah grew more and more upset so Jared crouched down in front of him putting his hands on the boyâs shoulders âNoah, listen to me, your aunt isnât here, I..â he tried but Noah wouldnât let him finish. âWhy not? Why wonât you let her come back? Why did you let those bad people take her away? My aunt Jordan has done nothing wrong! I thought you loved my aunt Jordanâ the boy struggled to get away from him, âhey, Noah? Noah? Listen to meâ Jared tried to calm him down but Noah refused to do what he said âNo! I donât have to listen to you! Aunt Jordan is gonna die, she told me so on the plane, she said that the doctor said they donât have a new heart for her and sheâs gonna die because if they did find her a heart then she wouldnât even be in London to get itâ the boy yelled. Jared couldnât help but gasp in shock, oh fuck..what had he done?, âwhat? What did the doctor say to your aunt?â Shannon came walking out of the kitchen followed by Constance, âshe said that the doctor told her she couldnât go back to America with me, but she did it anyway because she was doing it for me so I could go and live with grandma and she told me to be brave, and she also said that she was coming back home to help Jared with something so he wouldnât have to cry and be sad anymore, she said that she needed to do it so Jared could be happy again with another girlâ Noah sniffed through his tears that he desperately tried to wipe away with his arm, his big blue eyes scanning everyone nervously âI want to go back to London with aunt Jordan, maybe they will find her a heart and she doesnât have to dieâ. Jared who was too shocked by the news to say anything, let himself fall back into a sitting position, hanging his head and tugging his long hair in despair, why hadnât he listened? Why had he been so stubborn? She had risked her life to save him and everyone, everyone but herself and now she was gonna die..fuck, no, not again, not again, not again, not again.
âMcLeodâ the harsh voice of a man vibrated through the cell as the door opened, she was cold and so very tired, all she wanted to do was sleep so she didnât have to feel the agonizing pain in her heart, she needed her medication but she didnât even know where all of her things were at the moment. âMcLeodâ the man thundered again and she slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position, she was so dizzy that her hands grasped the stone bench for support âyesâ she nodded and tried to focus on her breathing that was deep and heavy, âitâs time for your call, youâve got five minutesâ he walked over to her and yanked her up from the bench. A call? Who was she gonna call? Jared? No, she couldnât possibly do that, he wanted nothing to do with her anymore, she was being dumped, that much was obvious..why though? Because he had found someone else in the short period of time they were apart? Probably..what else could it be?or maybe Amanda had put her claws into him again, the way she had said 'you wishâ when she had introduced herself to the judge as Jaredââs girlfriend..âLike I said, you have five minutesâ the guard stopped in his tracks pointing at the telephone on the table. There were a couple of rings and then his sleepy voice drifted into her ear âHello?â it was the nicest thing she had heard all day and she had to take a deep breath so not to start crying again, âTom! Itâs me, Jordanâ she breathed, her knuckles turning white from clutching the telephone so hard. âJordan! Oh thank god, Iâve been waiting for your call all night, anyway, everything ok?â Tom breathed a sigh of relief, âUhm, no..Iâm not actually..listen I canât talk for long..Iâm..uhm, Iâm in jail..â she looked at the guard who was staring at her from a distance. âWhat??? Jordan? In jail?? what the..what the fuck happened? Whereâs Jared? And Noah? Is Noah alright, is he with you?â on the other side of the world, Tom sat up straight in bed all of a sudden, âI donât know where Noah is, oh god this is such a mess..â she closed her eyes in pain, he was asking too many questions she just didnât have an answer to right now. âAnyway, Tom..thatâs what I wanted to talk to you about, remember the envelope I gave you yesterday?â she took a deep breath to come back to her senses, âI think itâs time you opened it..â. The guard came walking back to her again, indicating that her time was up âTom, I gotta go, please just read the letter, ok?! I need to know that Noah is safe and that heâs taken care of, thatâs all that matters, ok? Please Tom?â. Tom stared at the envelope on his nightstand âOf course, yeah, Iâll read it, I promiseâ he quickly said but he could already hear the disconnected tone bleeping in his ears. Â
