The Last 10 Years | Oneshot

Note: for the October Jekyll and Hyde task (write a one-shot featuring your character as first the protagonist and then the antagonist) I had an idea to try and tell Annie and Charlie’s story in the style of the musical The Last Five Years, since that is kind of the goal of that show’s storytelling style. Basically the premise is the same story told from two different perspectives, one in chronological order and the other in reverse-chronological order. Just wanted to clarify that in case the format is confusing. Enjoy!

2021, Annie

The last time Anastasia Tremaine saw Charles King, he was shimmering. 

The morning light got in her eyes, Tennessee June out in all its glory as Annie loaded the last box into the Uber that would take her to the airport. Out of the corner of her eye, Annie could see Charlie bending down to give Harlynne and Jaxson each one last hug. The early summer sunshine seemed to sparkle on his Dri-Fit Vanderbilt Tennis shirt because of course it did. The world seemed to part for Charlie King and everything that made Annie squint and stumble and fall just painted him in brighter glory.

It was what she had always liked about him, wasn’t it? That she could look at him and see the sun? Annie’s life had always been defined by the people she surrounded herself with. Rodmilla Tremaine’s screechy daughter, Ella Ashbourne’s bitchy stepsister with the bad fake tan, and then Charlie King’s perky young wife. 

Maybe that was her mistake from the beginning. How was she going to define herself now?

2011, Charlie

The first time Charles King saw Anastasia Tremaine, she was shimmering. 

Literally. Covered in silver sparkles. The glitter bomb was a new ritual to welcome the Alpha Phi pledges, replacing the traditional surprise Jägerbomb after a lengthy hazing investigation that left the sisters scrambling to replace their traditions with those less explicitly related to alcohol. Of course, it was the first mixer of the year, so alcohol of all kinds was flowing through the Kappa Alpha house, just with enough plausible deniability to say that technically nobody underage was encouraged to drink. 

Luckily for the majority of the attendees at this mixer, they tended to have the kind of connections to get a good enough lawyer to get out of that stuff.

Charlie saw Annie sparkling as she stood on the coffee table and glitter rained down on her, shrieking in disgust (but maybe soaking up the attention just a little bit). And he knew that was his girl. She was attractive in a self-conscious kind of way, with her long legs and big nose, like maybe she was afraid she stuck out too much. It was easy to see through fake freshman confidence, and Charlie could already see her posh British accent impressing his parents. 

He hung back. He didn’t say anything yet. But Charlie had a feeling he would run into Annie Tremaine again.

2019, Annie

It was really quite plain and simple: Charlie was cheating.

Annie believed she was justified in going through his phone, because he was cheating. The signs were everywhere. He was always “going out to happy hour” after work even though he hadn’t been interested in “happy hour” since he’d started at the accounting firm six years ago. He seemed distracted lately. And his little icon always dropped off of the map on Find My Friends the same time every day. 

So when Charlie was in the shower, Annie reached across the bed and unlocked his phone. Unknown number.

Tonight again?

No, not tonight

When??? 😩😩😩 

Tomorrow?

Ur gonna make me wait until tomorrow

The anticipation will make it sweeter 😉

And there was her proof. “CHARLIE!” Annie roared, jumping out of bed and pounding on the shower door. She was justified. She had-- what was it they called it on those police procedurals? Probable cause? Annie had probable cause. Charlie came stumbling out of the shower, wrapping the towel around him and looking at her blearily. “Whaa-”

“Explain this!”

Charlie just stared at her. “Did you go through my phone?”

2013, Charlie

The plain and simple explanation was that Annie asked Charlie out. 

Two years after that first party where they locked eyes, after Annie had attracted a few whispers for stumbling through some on-off relationships with the more sensitive of the KA brothers, Annie went right up to Charlie at homecoming and asked him out. Charlie didn’t plan on getting tied down to a college girl right after he graduated. And no, he didn’t leverage any kind of power he might have had, because Annie had just applied for an internship at the accounting firm he and his father both worked at. That was her choice. Wasn’t that what feminism was all about or something?

Annie asked Charlie out with the brazen confidence of a brand new Co-Chair of Philanthropy, a confidence she would confess, taking a sip of her cosmo, actually came from Charlie’s encouragement. Last spring, right before graduation, Charlie had told Annie to go after her dreams, and Annie had decided that her dreams lied with Charlie King.

That was what Charlie had to explain to people when they raised eyebrows at his relationship with Annie. She had asked him out. It was even possible she was playing him to get her foot in the door at the firm. Right?

2015, Charlie and Annie

Charlie and Annie had a fight the night before their wedding. It started at the rehearsal dinner, when Charlie’s best man, a lanky KA brother named Ross, got into a tiff with Drizella over something political, and then Annie whispered to Charlie to shut him up, and Charlie didn’t, and now they were in their individual hotel rooms, shouting at each other on the phone.

“He’s my friend, Annie, I don’t control him!”

“I’m not asking you to control him, but you could have pulled him for a chat! Told him to tone it down!”

“Annie, why would that--”

“You have no problem doing that with me when I’m being a bitch! And I’ve done it with you when you’re being stupid! What’s the difference?”

“Annie, I--”

“I know why. It’s because you care more about fitting in with your stupid friends than you care about me! Grow up, Charlie, you’re getting bloody married!”

“Annie!” 

Silence.

“Look, Annie, I don’t know what you want me to say. I can’t travel back in time and do it different.”

“I want you to say you’re sorry!”

“Alright, Annie, I’m sorry.”

More silence. For a moment, Annie had a burning feeling that something might not be right. On the other side of the wall, Charlie had the same feeling.

They both wrote it off as cold feet. And the next day, they had a beautiful wedding, and it even made the society pages, and Annie had never gotten so many likes on Instagram. And Charlie’s mother was proud. And the fight was forgotten.

Until it wasn’t. 

2013, Annie 

Annie asked Charlie out because her mother said she should, and because her friends said that he was a sweet guy but he would never make the first move, and because a cute self-help book she had read said that if Annie didn’t take control of her destiny now, destiny would take control of her. Annie was a strong woman, and Charlie was cute and well-connected, and maybe he was a lot older, but that was the kind of man Annie wanted, anyway. Someone mature. Someone who wouldn’t walk out when things got hard. Charlie seemed steady.

And yes, maybe she told him that she had gotten her confidence from his little drunken pep talk that he gave her right before he graduated, even though that wasn’t really true. And maybe she faked it the first time they hooked up... and the second and third time, too. And maybe Annie swore she listened to all of his mixtapes, even when she found them quite boring. Men had fragile little egos, and Annie knew she could use that to her advantage. 

It didn’t matter, because at the end of things, Annie knew that she and Charlie would be perfect together. What was a little white lie here and there, a little corner cutting? It was destiny and she was just helping it along.

2019, Charlie

Cheating didn’t look good. It never did. Charlie had a kid, and another on the way, and a wife who was perfect on paper. Ross’s stare across the table at Buffalo Wild Wings (an old heartbreak haunt from the Vandy days) said all of that. But Charlie believed he deserved some sympathy. 

“She’s crazy, man!” Charlie argued.

“Charlie, you’re not supposed to call women crazy anymore. Erica--”

“I don’t care what bullshit Erica read on TheSkimm!”

“Charlie! That’s my wife you’re talking about!”

“Sorry,” Charlie grumbled, biting into his buffalo wing morosely. “But I think if she was paranoid enough that I was cheating on her that she had to go through my phone, then there’s a bigger problem. And, I’m just saying, she could’ve just asked me.”

“And you would have told her the truth?”

Charlie hmphed and threw the bone down on his plate, reaching for another wing. 

2011, Annie

The first time Annie saw Charlie, it was from behind.

But what a glorious back of his head it was! Thick chestnut-brown hair, gelled into a perfect side part but not too much that it couldn’t be tousled a little. A pink golf shirt-- there was nothing like a man who knew how to dress. And he was moving with purpose, with animation, like he knew he was the brightest star in the room and everyone around him was so lucky to bask in his light.

He was the shimmering outline of a boy you could fill in with all your hopes. And the other girls had told Annie to stay away from the older boys, that they would play with your heart and drop you by Christmas to ring-by-spring a girl more their speed. But Annie could see the pieces clicking into place. She had been raised to believe if you worked hard and wanted something badly enough and if you weren’t afraid to get your hands a little dirty, you could have whatever you wanted. And Annie wanted this. Badly.

Annie was tired of standing in the shadows. She wanted to attach herself to a boy who commanded the light, so she could shine, too. And she had finally found him.

2021, Charlie

The last time Charlie saw Annie, it was from behind, as she climbed into the car and didn’t bother to give him one last wave before speeding down the highway with the life he had spent the past ten years building.

Annie had gotten everything she wanted in the divorce. It was hard to sympathize with a cheater, especially one who already seemed to have a backup life ready to go as soon as his ex wife and kids were out of the way. Charlie didn’t really feel that way. He mostly resented Annie for blowing this up the way she had, turning one little affair into a marriage-shattering event, fleeing the country with both kids in tow. Charlie didn’t care what Ross said. She was crazy.

Mostly, Charlie mourned what could have been. He could have gone on having it all. He was doing a good job of balancing it. And he had been raised to believe that if he just managed everything tactfully enough, he could skate through life unencumbered, with nobody to say no to what he wanted. For the first time, he couldn’t. And it made Charlie livid.

But maybe it was time for a fresh start. He had Jenna, his beautiful girlfriend. He had his house, still. He had his Nashville friends, who had eventually come around to agree with Charlie that he was in the right (and Charlie believed that they liked Jenna better, anyway). 

The worst thing that Annie had done, Charlie decided, was think too highly of him. He wasn’t a man of principle or honor, he just projected that image in the settings where it was necessary. And she had been naive enough to believe in that. 

Charlie went back in the house and pulled up Jenna’s contact on his phone. From now on, he wasn’t going to lie about the kind of man he was. And hopefully, that would prevent him from repeating this whole mess over again.

The Hazards of Travel

           Nearly every travel adventure is bound to have days totally forgettable: nothin’ went right, everything went left. We rose early, too early to wait for the hotel breakfast. And this followed a hard travel day where we felt like we needed to cover at least a million miles. As everyone knows, you don’t get off the freeway unless you can actually see the restaurant (or gas station); it might be miles and miles away. Also, you don’t get off if the station, or restaurant, is on the left. You then have to stop at the off-ramp end, cross left over the freeway, get to the place, and then drive all the way back over the freeway only to again turn left to re-enter the freeway (usually). Your car only has so many left turns in it.

           So, we got to an Arby’s and had to get back into the car because there was no inside service (it looked like there was). By then more cars got into the drive-up ahead of us. Then when we neared the caller box, I studied the menu, not being a frequent patron of Arby’s (almost never). At the order speaker/microphone, which was a simple two foot tall post, I saw a great big sign that told me to order ahead – so I did, pulled ahead to order at the menu billboard thing. After pulling up 6-8 feet, I realized (too late) that they meant to order on-line. WHO DOES THAT? IT’S FAST FOOD! Now the car behind me has filled the void I left behind (the world hates a vacuum). So, we (I) drive out of line, over two curbs, and out of Arby’s lot, hungrier than before we got there, especially because Debbie had already told me that she wanted the cheddar and beef. I’m really mad at me now, and tryin’ my best to take it out on the world, but to exclude Debbie from … Anyway, we eventually spot (Did I mention that this was all on the LEFT?) a Wendy’s. Great! I know what to order there. Nope. After turning left to get into their lot, we discover that it is under construction, or renovation, or something. No square burgers for me, Nope! No Siree! So we went to the motel and ate the paper towels that we’d brought from home.

           But back to the forgettable day that began with us leaving the motel too early to get their Covid19 delight. With about an hour of the spare two hours we had before the time we were due at our house-sit gig used up in bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go traffic caused by both road construction and a wreck, we set the GPS for the National Cemetery at Arlington, Virginia where we found closed gates and half the United States military alive and well guarding and preventing us from entry. They gave us coordinates, routing us back through Kentucky and Tennessee to an entry guarded by all the off-duty airport PSA employees. I didn’t have to take my shoes off, but they all now know that I am an innie, not an outie. Not wanting to trade half my pension for a golf cart train ride for a two-hundred-yard walk to see JFK’s eternal flame that looked like God was tryin’ to blow out, we do what we do best … walk. Our spare hour disappeared before we learned whether God got the job done, or not. Oh, and you can’t simply reverse your route. You must walk around the world in order to follow footprint decals. It was like a maze without the cornfield.

           We arrived at the house sit with our fake smiles and took the tour, learning all we needed to know about this and that and how easy their TV controller worked. That is the subject of another day; just understand this – I don’t care how well it works for you. IT WON’T WORK LIKE THAT FOR ANYONE ELSE! EVER! You’ll find your remote in the backyard water feature that you’re so proud of. So we drive off to investigate this part of America, first to learn, after turning left into it, that this trail and beach is for locals ONLY. The officer was so very sorry. Yes, he was. An hour down the road is a state park that want $5, plus 2 more for out-of-staters to look at some white bluffs that the famous if-you-don’t-work, you-don’t-eat Captain John Smith noted in 1608. Nope. Closed. The vantage point (2 miles down a trail) washed out in 1892 (maybe) and hasn’t yet been fixed. Our source said nothing about a trail, that we would be happy to hike, but not in 110֯ heat late in the afternoon. Or that we wouldn’t even see the cliffs even if we were to hike.

Okay, the homeowners are gone, we can go buy groceries (Debby won’t let me eat all their food) and unload all our stuff. Yay, a Walmart, not that we like Walmart, but we at least know where things are. How long since you’ve been in a Walmart that was not a supercenter? No food. And this was after having to drive to where we could make a U-turn (which is way worse than a left turn) to get to the place. Did I mention that it was in the late afternoon when everybody within a day’s drive goes to Walmart?

           Seeing gas at a reasonable (relatively) price, and I finally get the pump to take one of my cards (all work fine in Arkansas, but not so much elsewhere). Yup, you guessed it, the posted price was for gas with a car wash. I figured that out with the use of a pair of 50x binoculars.

           Ahah! A Safeway. They have food! But only if you have one of those platinum-plated gold cards and the bill goes to your neighbor, or somebody else, somewhere. You know those little, single-serving pies that Walmart sells for 50¢? Safeway wants $9,000.00. Each. And guess how old they are. The cherries are raisins and the sauce is red paint on the dried-out crust. On the way back to the car I was sure that a cop would throw me to the ground and break my arm, or cuff me and then slug me in the jaw, all with his knee on my neck just for what I thought of the local grocery stores.

           But we made it. Yay!

           But the homeowner didn’t tell us that the bed was made up with flannel sheets for this thousand-degree night. And they didn’t have any real sheets for this bed.

           They’ll find their flannel sheets in the backyard water feature when they get home.

           Here are some road pictures, as well as some taken in Annapolis where you don’t want to go on Naval Academy graduation day, which you have no way of knowing until too late. Oh, and BTW, don’t accidentally drive onto the base (which is invitingly easy to do). Now the Navy as well as the entire Department of defense knows my shoe size and my blood pressure numbers.

 it looks like a towel material and there's a lot of stuff you can do with them and you can print on the aprons man I'm telling you there's a whole lot of stuff you can do with this thing the proper the opportunity it's endless so you can you can prey on the aprons and whatnot there's those other panties I found they got different colors different sizes get creative have fun this machine is not only for t-shirts.

 you can do a lot now these are methods your bag and I think they call them you open them up and they have all the different compartments on the inside.

you know again you can print on the front of this flap and again you can sit you can sell you can put whatever brand you want whatever method you want on these things.

put on the front panel on the back and let's say for instance you don't want to screen print on to it you can get into the embroidering business you don't need to go out there and buy high-end bra during equipment all these heads and whatnot.

 you only need to know the first thing about embroidery there are local embroiderers in your town that will wholesale we're doing broidery for you for wholesale you can get embroidered designs or messages or sayings or words on this thing for less than three dollars a piece I promise you that you know now.

 you can't just go buy one buy one but you know in five quantities of six twelve whatever you can build your own line you can be your own brand you can do anything you want with this stuff so remember you are in peril printing business.

 you are in the garment printing business that means printing that means embroidering and if you need to use the screen printer because you want to print onto something else like some laundry bags some other vinyl type material material you can you don't have to use screen printing remember.

avenue you want to make additional money you want to make additional profits you can print on the hats now check this out now they have a heat press machine reviews they have a cat press and works pretty much the same but you can set the hat down on the press.

you can print onto it now guess what this is the adidas brand wholesale you can get wholesale name-brand ball caps and you can print and put whatever you want on to it you can embroider that in fact it's a digit low goal has been embroidered.

 it's been embroidered Golf sirs you can get these wholesale as well we did something for the University of Tennessee a big bulk order now they found our website on the web and we took the order now you can get into the same thing so the ball caps I haven't done this on the cap press so I don't know if you can do this but these are little Sun visors but if not you definitely can get them embroidered with a local embroidery if you want to put a message on these as well same bag.

 we had but just a different color I get they call a messenger bags again they have all types of different bags these ain't the only bag they have the whole bunch of them.

 so you know there's a whole lot of things you can do you in the name of the game its continuing to sell to your existing customer base your customers will buy from you over and over and over again you don't have to always go out there and find new customers just continue to sell to the existing customer base you have just let them know that you have stuff for sale dark colored t-shirts again you can print on the dark colored garments you know that already with the heat press machine and then this here is one of my favorites now my wife is a photographer also.

when we send orders out to our customers we're always inserting stuff in the package so that we can always upsell our customers and additional products now this is a a photograph only if you can see that let me back up a little bit this is a fault this was the photograph and the company that we deal with will take the photograph that you send them you email them the photograph and they will scan they were digitally they will scan the photograph into the machine and then they will take their machine.

I'm like just think of embroidery they will stitch this thing they were stitched the photograph stitch by stitch by stitch through the machine and this is what you get a real nice soft blanket this is nice transfer it on this is not screen print on this is actually all the different colors.

 they've done for the Atlanta Braves this was found in a Target retail store you could do the same thing with your own designs you can get a blue one just like this is blue and make the same doggone thing now that's it may I don't know what else to say if you're not excited yet I don't know what I can say to get you excited you know if you're looking to start and build your own business make money from home perhaps you need extra income to send your child off to college or have extra money in the savings or buy a house the t-shirt business the garment business the apparel business will allow you to do that as you can see with this machine you do not need a lot of space you can do this on your kitchen table when we first started in my one-bedroom apartment to bedroom apartment.

 we were the two bedrooms over the one in my two bedroom apartment we had this machine in our bedroom on the nightstand now we didn't have a lot of room and you know but we use this in the bedroom and then you know we eventually moved it to the kitchen table because we're getting a little too busy we didn't have a lot of company coming over side and care how the place look and in fact we didn't have a bed me and my wife slept on the float and the kid had to be in and but we slept on the floor I think we just had just one child at the time so many years ago but if they had a bit you know I opinion I felt maybe it wasn't gonna make us any doggone money so let's use the money and reapply it back into the business and that's what we did don't regret it at all and you know but got to start .

Pandemic Ironman 2020

I have been asked by a few people to write something regarding Ironman Florida, the first full 140.6 Ironman held in the United Stated since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have never done a race write up before and I am not sure where to begin. I will take it from training which started in March to the end of the race and the reader can skip around to the parts they find interesting.

Training

Ironman Florida was to be my tenth Ironman, a step on the road to Legacy. I started a training plan that I had used before in February and tweaked it a little with my Ironman Coach certification. I already had a good endurance base from the 2020 Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World in January, so February was primarily weight training and short distance swim, bike and runs. I still had a pool this month at New York Sports Club in Smithtown.

March is where things got interesting and COVID-19 lock-down started. The gym closed. I quickly purchased a Thermal Reaction wetsuit from Blueseventy and found my gloves and booties. I am fortunate to live 2.5 miles from the Long Island Sound so open water swims started early March. It was freezing but a bit fun to channel my inner Wim Hof. The swim training for this Ironman was entirely open water, with one pool swim in July when my sister invited me to her Town Pool once it opened. It was a concern because I feel pool intervals are important but I learned to incorporate intervals in the open water which helped break up those sessions and gave me focus.

I was able to get weight training done at work, we have a pretty decent set up in our garage. Biking and running proceeded as usual with a mix of outside rides and runs and some Zwift workouts. With a ten month training period I worked a lot of Zone 2 heart rate training, I’ve become a big believer.

It was weird not knowing at this point if the race was even on, and training helped me deal with a lot of the unknown, the anxiety. It pushed me through the spring and summer feeling hopeful despite seeing all the races on the circuit being cancelled. I had a 70.3 planned for late August in Maine that was not to be this year.

Time passed and soon it was race time. Ironman sent multiple e-mails stating they were still looking to hold the race and how it would function. I kept a folder in my e-mail with all the correspondence from Ironman, the airline, the hotel and TriBike Transport.

Travel

For whatever reason this was a tough flight to find. I had to go American Airlines and the flight to Florida was out of LaGuardia to Charlotte to Fort Walton Beach, an airport that was about an hour away from Panama Beach City. Going home was Panama City to Charlotte to JFK. Out of all three airports, JFK in New York was the only one with the Department Of Health forms to fill out upon arrival.

Now the story I’m about to write is to show how important it is to remain alert and pay attention to detail when you travel. Hopefully you will learn from my mistake here.

I wearily got off the plane at Fort Walton and found a cab outside, a nice, elderly man named Bill who was willing to drive me over an hour to my hotel in Panama City. He was driving, we were chatting and he asked me if it was okay for him to stop for gas. Sure, no problem. At the gas station he asked if I wanted to get anything and I said yes, I’ll run in for a drink. As I exited the gas station I saw the taillights of my cab leaving the pump and proceeding down the road. Without me. I did my best to stay calm but my cab had just left me stranded and my bags were in the car, along with my wallet, shield, and ID. I wondered if I was on a television show. After a few minutes it became clear that I was not on TV, and I needed to do something to track down this car. I was angry at myself for not knowing the cab company name, or getting the vehicle’s plate. After getting nowhere on the phone trying to contact the airline I asked the woman at the gas station to call the police. It was at this moment my cab returned, and my friend Bill said he thought it was weird I wasn’t answering his questions anymore and when he turned around and didn’t see me, he remembered I ran into the gas station. I refrained from physically strangling this man and climbed back into the minivan, clearly shook regarding how this race weekend just started.

Hotel

I had booked the Boardwalk Beach Hotel & Convention Center when I registered for this race. It was originally the host hotel and the race was to take place right on the grounds which is super convenient. Due to COVID and the safe return to racing, the race venue was moved six miles away to Aaron Bessant Park so they could spread us out more. I kept the reservation at BBH to be fair and help with the hotel’s business. I did enjoy being there but it was far from everything. In retrospect I should have rented one of those kewl golf carts and used that to get around for the weekend. I spent approximately $100 in Uber fees going back and forth to Aaron Bessant and Pier Park. All my cab fees, airport runs included, came to about $250. A shuttle would have been super nice but I think the majority of the people racing switched their accommodations upon the announcement of the venue change.

The hotel itself was okay, I was on the ground floor so it was out and a short walk to the water and road. The cafeteria had coffee in the morning and some pastries but I only saw them cooking food my last day as I checked out. The people that worked there were nice, I’ll forever remember me cleaning my bike in my room with the door open and housekeeping cleaning the adjoining rooms. I had put some music on the Bluetooth and we had a great time.

Race Check In

About a week before traveling Ironman sent out an Active.com e-mail with a link to reserve race check in times. This again was to space us out and not have us standing in line, clogging up the area. I picked Wednesday night between 5-6PM. Bibs were given out first come, first serve so the lower your bib number was the earlier you checked in. I was #1038. I arrived at about 4:45 with my mask and was told I could go in. It was athletes only so if you were with someone they had to wait outside the Ironman Village for you. I had to answer a short survey verbally, get my temperature taken, and then was directed table to table, just like a regular race. For places where a line of people might happen there were tape marks and lanes were roped off with string and little ribbons indicating every six feet. I was able to pick my bike check-in time for Friday, they gave me a little card with 2-3PM on it. I actually really liked this system and I think it would be great even when racing goes back to its regular routine. I found it interesting that the swag such as the swim cap and back pack didn’t have the race name on it. The finisher shirt and medal had no date on it. I guess up until the very start of the race it was always uncertain if it would be a go.

I learned that Ironman Gulf Coast 70.3 would also be on Saturday, November 7th, with an 11:00AM start time. So both races would be going at almost the same time using the same course and staging area. I received an e-mail from Triathlon Wire with the numbers of about 1250 athletes for the full and 300 for the half.

After checking in I walked over to the TriBike Transport tent, picked up my bike, put air in the tires and rode it back to my hotel. It was dark when I got back so I walked over to Subway for a veggie sub.

Thursday was a day for me to ride a little, swim a little and look around a little. My calves let me know when I did too much walking. That happens to me often at Disney for marathon weekend. You’re in a great place and want to see it all but remember, there’s a race in a couple of days! I did what I could to find vegan food options in a very big seafood area. I remembered to bring food to eat later back to my room, I had a refrigerator and a microwave there.

I walked on the pier and saw a few of the swim course buoys set up. It always looks so far, doesn’t it?

Before bed I watched the athlete briefing on-line and reviewed the race packet I printed out before I left New York. I got my gear bags ready to be handed in along with my bike the next day.

Bike Check In

Friday I rode my bike and gear bags to check in at 2PM. For some reason we also needed to wear our timing chip which made me thankful I watched that briefing the night before, because they really weren’t letting people go in without them. Athletes only again, no one without a timing chip and an event race band could enter transition. In I went with my mask on again.

Bikes were placed every other space on the rack giving us a little more room. Gear bags stayed with the bike. I tucked mine under the rear wheel that was in the air. All items in the bags must stay in the bags even during the race. So the guy two spots down from me who set his area up like he was doing a neighborhood sprint complete with a towel mat had to put all his gear back in the bags. After taking a picture of my set up and saying good night to my bike (for real, I speak to it) I got out of there. I made sure I knew where I was regarding swim in, bike out/bike in and run out before I left. I picked up a veggie pizza before heading back to the hotel. I spent the remainder of that day eating, relaxing, reading, prepping my Special Needs bags. I usually apply race numbers (TriTats) the night before but there was no body marking for this race so I wasn’t going to use up the numbers.

I was slightly concerned about getting to the race start so early the next morning. The front desk had recommended a cab service, but I met an awesome man named El by the hotel pool. He needed a charger for his Garmin. I let him use mine and we started talking about the next morning. He had driven to Florida from Tennessee, had his car and offered me a ride to the start which I gratefully accepted.

Race Morning

Up at 3:45AM race morning. Made instant coffee, ate half a bagel, lubed, dressed, double checked all my bags and headed out. El and I drove to transition and he was able to park close to the transition entrance. Special Needs bags were handed off on the way in to Transition. Masks were on. I went to my bike, double checked the tires and filled the water and Gatorade bottles. They didn’t want us wondering around too much. I did see Chris Nikic walk into Transition. This race was his attempt at becoming the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman. I thought it was great to see him, a good sign. Now that I think about it at this point I just focused on that good thought and the cab ride from the airport wasn’t even in my head. Mike Reilly was there! I got ready to swim and tucked my Morning Clothes bag behind my gear bags, Morning Clothes stayed with us as well.

Swim

The forecast projected it being overcast most of the day and the morning was a bit cloudy. I picked goggles with a super light tint and it was a good choice. We were to stand with our bikes until our projected swim time was called out. I stayed put until I heard, “1:20-1:30 head to the swim start now!” Everyone thinking they were finishing the swim in that time started out and towards the beach, it was about a seven minute walk on the road and on sand. Some people had throw-away shoes on, I did not. The road had tape marks every six feet, they wanted you to try to stay on them when walk-traffic stopped. On the sand they had roped off lanes with pink ribbons tied on every six feet. We were to stay on a ribbon. There were spectators the whole walk. Eventually my lane made it to the water and they were letting four people enter every five seconds or so. Despite this great system guess what. Once we were in the water in was a traditional Ironman. It took some time to get passed the breaks but once I was in I was going. Two loops, clockwise in the Gulf. I saw fish and a sea turtle. There was a current pushing us sideways so it took some effort and a lot of sighting to stay to the left of the buoys. It wouldn’t be an Ironman if I didn’t get hit in the eye and I got it on my second loop. If you’re familiar with the Lake Placid swim it was like that only no cable though, sorry. Despite it being wetsuit legal I was getting hot towards the end. I really enjoyed the water though and had a swim time of 1:27:01.

T1

My transition neighbors were gone by the time I got into T1 so I had plenty of room. I was expecting to have to wear a mask in Transition but we did not. I had my bike gear in the bag set up so I could just pull it out and put it on and it worked well. I hung my wetsuit on the bike rack to dry hoping that was allowed. It was still there when I got back so I guess it was. Once I was bike ready I made my way out to start my ride. My T1 time was 10:39.

Bike

Because the swim had been warm I started my bike ride a little thirsty which was unfortunately a sign of things to come. To keep contact points down Ironman had reduced the amount of Aid Stations, so after drinking my water and most of my Gatorade quickly it was some time before I could refill. I ate every 45 minutes to an hour on the bike. Solid food was no problem, I had a lot with me and grabbed extra going through the Aid Stations. It was fluid I needed more often than it was available. If the sun had been out full force I think I would have had an even worse problem. It was about 80 degrees, humid, still overcast and windy which meant I was sweating and not really going anywhere when pedaling against the wind. I used the tail wind as best I could to make up time. I really think I need to be re-fit for my bike because at mile 30 I was already having terrible lower back pain. It wasn’t an easy ride and despite everyone telling me how flat the course is, it was over 3,000 feet of elevation. I had to get off to use the porta-potty and stretch early on. I guess at this point I should mention my race kit. I wore a one-piece tri suit from Zoot, the Autism Ohana kit. Google it if you have a chance, I think it’s great. Very colorful and for a good cause. I wore it to remember my friend Lizzie that I run with sometimes in Central Park as a volunteer for Achilles. But there are goods and bads of wearing a one-piece and the bads is definitely when you try to use the bathroom in it. It has little sleeves that are tough to find and get your arms through when they are wet. So there was a struggle in that porta-potty, no doubt. Finally I opened the door. The porta-potty was on an incline and I kind of stumbled out of it and cracked my left knee on the doorway. Then I bent over to grab my knee and hit my big, bike helmet head on the side. I felt like the Three Stooges was trying to do an Ironman, I really did. Shaking my head I got back on the bike and started to go. I felt my knee throbbing for about twenty miles. As I write this I have a wicked bruise. But back to the bike…This was a one loop course on the highways of Florida. There were wide shoulders and a bike lane that we rode in but in the back of my mind I kept thinking this was an active road way and any passing needed to be super carefully done. Cars were courteous enough not to use the right lane but if a driver wanted to be a jerk and use it they could. Any residential/business areas had spectators. As I said before it was windy. I did the best I could and had some good splits when the wind was with me but I needed to get off a few more times to stretch. I finished the bike with a usual time of 7:14:01.

T2

Again I had the area to myself so I sat to change shoes and get ready for the run. I was a little put off by my bike split and my stomach was not 100% but I thought I could have a strong run if I stayed focused. Removing sand from my feet was a challenge but it was important so avoid any irritation so I took the time to do that before I put my socks on. I stretched my back and drank more Gatorade before I left. I had a T2 time of 10:53.

Run

As I started my run I was greeted by just as many spectators as any other Ironman. Some had masks on, some didn’t. Some were dressed up, some played music. Everyone was encouraging and motivating. I started out so happy to be running. This course was an out and back two times along the highway parallel to the beach, passed all the hotels, bars and restaurants. The halfway turning point and the finish line were at Pier Park. For six miles I ran strong and thanked everyone for being out. A lot of people liked and commented on my race kit. It was great. But soon I knew I was going to have to do the run/walk, even as the sun went down and it started to cool off. I was unable to eat anything solid for the majority of the run. The thought of trying made me dry heave. I saw a few people really heaving in the bushes and was afraid I was going to join them. I took in as much fluid as I could, mainly water and Coke. I was sweating out a lot of salt, my neck and face were all gritty. I thought at first maybe it was sand but why would there be sand on my face, right? Out and back, out and back, using whatever I could in my brain to keep moving. I followed the cones they used to mark off the run area. Walk one cone, run five cones. My quads were shredded. I thought of my Mom and my Family. I thought of work and how I wanted to make everyone proud. I thought of the finish line and finally, FINALLY it was my turn to cross. My run took 6:25:20. Mike Reilly called me an Ironman with an official time of 15:27:52.

After crossing the spectator-less finish line I was given a mask and a masked volunteer guided me along, not touching me, to a table with plastic bags containing my finisher shirt and race medal. Someone with gloves and a mask removed my timing chip. I made my way over to Athlete Food and choked down half a veggie sub. I got my picture taken with my medal. (There were photographers out on the course too.) I had completed my 10th Ironman.

As I gathered my gear and dropped my bike back at the TriBike tent, Chris Nikic became an Ironman. I cheered from the parking lot. I started to walk back with the plan of getting passed the road closures to an area where I could call an Uber to get back to my hotel. But I started walking with a man named Dan who had volunteered in a kayak for the swim and at the finish line as well. He had just as long of a day as I had but when he heard of my plan to get back he ran into his hotel, got his keys and drove me to my hotel. And that really, really describes the Ironman atmosphere and Family to me. We all help each other, we all do what we can to get each other through the challenge. I am so grateful I found this sport, these events and have met some of the most amazing people.

You can pretty much gauge what type of a news day it is by the number of paper towels used in my household.  Here’s the scenario:  I see a news story that makes me angry, and I curse whichever Trump caused my anger, usually Donald himself.  If it makes me really angry, I stick out my tongue and do a raspberry … ppppbbbbbttttthhhh.  (Yes, I know … very mature …) I then go get a paper towel to clean the droplets off my screen.  And so goes the day.  At the end of the night, as I am preparing for bed, I check the paper towels.  If there is still ½ roll or more on the dowel, I figure it was a pretty peaceful news day.

Tonight there is only one lonely paper towel left on the roll.  And here is part of the reason:

Eric Trump.  Eric came flitting across my radar last night when Forbes reported that the Eric Trump Foundation shifted money intended to go to cancer patients to the family’s businesses. I left that one alone, because I had other fish to fry.  Then tonight … this headline:

Eric Trump Says Those Who Oppose His Dad Are ‘Not Even People’

Eric Trump, Donnie Dark’s 33-year-old son, appearing for some unknown reason on Sean Hannity’s Fox network television program, uttered the words you see above.  In addition, he said that he’s “never seen hatred like this” and “morals have flown out the window” when it comes to attacks against his father.

… excuse me a second while I go grab a paper towel …

First point here is that he just said approximately 64% of the people living in the U.S. are nonpersons.  Including me … and probably you, if you’re reading this post.

Second point is that while it is true that there is intense hatred in this nation, as I have noted many times before, and morals seem to have been packed away with the holiday decorations … who the Sam Heck is this little snotty greasehead to complain when it is his family, specifically his father, that contributed to, if not created, the hatred and bigotry from which we suffer today???
