2023 World Amateur Handicap Championship
Christopher Rainey Captures Flight Winners Playoff At PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship Christopher Rainey from Drums, Pa. shot a net 68 (gross 99) to win the Flight Winners’ Playoff at the 40th annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship Friday at Grande Dunes Resort Course. There was a five-way tie for first place at -3 before Rainey made a net birdie on the par 4 18th to earn the win, finishing one shot ahead of Joe Day (Conway, S.C.), Samuel Bland (Surfside, S.C.), Tom Fahringer (Valrico, Fla.), Mike Zeeb (New Carlisle, Ind.). Christopher Schultz (La Porte Ind.) fired a three-round total of 209 to best David Hunt (Orlando, Fla.) by nine strokes to win the Men’s Gross Division title. Russell Burnham (Dallas, Texas) edged Daniel Constantino (Greer, S.C.) by two shots en route to victory in the Men’s Senior Gross Division crown. Mark Gardiner (North Salt Lake, Utah) finished seven strokes ahead of second place Michael Barclay (Cartersville, Ga.) to capture the Men’s Mid-Senior Gross Division championship. Heidi Rittenhouse (Smithfield, N.C.) cruised to victory in the Women’s Gross Division, finishing 14 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Beth Gutteridge (Rindge, N.H.). Mike Zeeb (New Carlisle, Ind.) and Brock Zeeb (New Carlisle, Ind.), a father-son duo, combined to win the Casa de Campo Pairs Competition. By virtue of winning, the pair received a 4-day, 3-night stay at the luxurious Casa de Campo and unlimited golf. Entry into the event, which included at least four rounds of golf, nightly admission to the World’s Largest 19th Hole and a gift bag, was $699. There were 3,200+ participants this year with over 40 players from the Villages. Hurricane Idalia shortened the competition on Thursday with players hunkering down for possible bad weather that never really developed. The World Am places players into 11 divisions – men 49 and under, senior men (50-59), mid-senior men (60-69), super senior men (70-79), seasoned seniors (80+), women (59 and under), senior women (60+), the gross division, senior (50+) gross division, mid-senior (60+) gross division, and women’s gross division. There is also a “Just For Fun” flight, created for players who want to enjoy the World Am experience without the pressure of competition. After four days of play, all flight winners and ties will advance to the World Championship Playoff at TPC Myrtle Beach, an 18-hole shootout that crowns the event’s winner. While the competition initially lures players to the tournament, it’s only part of what keeps them returning. At the heart of the World Am’s appeal is the camaraderie among its participants and much of that kinship is fostered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole. Each night of the event, the 19th Hole overtakes all 120,000 square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, providing participants with free food and drinks, live entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, a golf expo and more. Among the big names that have appeared at the 19th Hole in recent years are David Feherty, Brandel Chamblee, Charlie Rymer and John Daly. Players also received a gift bag that included a polo, a pullover, a golf towel, a logo hat, a PGA Tour Superstore gift card, and an assortment of other goodies valued cumulatively at $250. The Secret to Lag in the Golf Swing
It’s why Rory McIlroy hits 330 yard bombs off the tee.
It’s what gives Ernie Els’s swing that signature look of “effortless power.”
And it’s why the great Jack Nicklaus, throughout his entire career, was able to hit high, beautiful, pure iron shots that landed softly and stopped on a dime.
In fact, every single week we’re able to watch the best players in the world play golf, and when we watch them, they make creating speed and distance look effortless.
Question is…how do they do it? What’s their secret?
For many amatuer golfers, power, accuracy, and consistency are elusive. They simply don’t understand how the pros are able to create speed and a smooth, rhythmic swing with such ease.
The answer is simple. Lag.
Creating lag during the golf swing allows the player to store energy and release this force right at impact. What lag also does is makes releasing the club head easier, as well as consistent contact become a mindless action.
What is Lag Anyways?
To put it simply, lag is the angle between your arm and club shaft during your downswing. The smaller the angle between those two things, the more lag you have created.
Now why is this so important? Lag is essential to creating effortless speed at the bottom of your swing.
No more will you have to rotate and swing out of your shoes.
Once you learn how to create lag, you’ll be able to stay balanced over the ball, and create consistent contact on a much more frequent basis.
How to Create Lag (The “One Two” Punch)
Creating lag can be boiled down to two things: storing energy and releasing energy.
Most amatuer golfers think about so many things throughout their swing, which makes it easy to become stiff and tense over the golf ball. Once this happens, it’s hard to create any speed let alone flexibility.
Loosening your grip, and relieving the tension from your arms, will make it incredibly easy for you to lead with your hands and leave the club head behind, creating lag.
Before our amazing training aid, a great way to get this feeling would be with a golf towel. As you swing a golf towel, you’re able to feel the end of it stay behind you, which in turn creates a whip-like effect at the bottom of the swing.
Now with the Lag Shot, you’re able to make full golf swings while experiencing the same feels. And best of all, you’re able to actually hit golf balls with it.
The Key Move to Copy if You Want to Create Perfect Lag
One of the best examples of lag, is looking at the swing of Sergio Garcia.
For years, Sergio has been one the the premium ball-strikers on the planet, and that can be attributed to the amount of lag he creates during his down swing. What he does that’s so important, is starting his downswing with a slight movement of his lower body.
More importantly, his hips.
His hips bump forward, creating a change of direction that influences his arms to drop.
This combination of moves leaves the club head behind his hands, creating lag.
The most important thing Sergio does extremely well, is keeping his left arm connected to his body during the initial part of his downswing, another valuable benefit of using, and hitting balls with Lag Shot.
The Secret to Lag is In the Wrists!
During your golf swing, you can do everything right. Start with your hips, drop the arms, and release at the bottom.
But if you don’t do one key aspect correctly, none of these things will matter.
That key aspect is removing all tension from your wrists. You still need to keep grip pressure on the club, but allowing your wrists to move freely during the entire swing is what’s going to allow you to store energy.
A great way to engrave this feeling into your mind, is making half swings. Bring the club to just about parallel to the ground, then with soft wrists, bring your hands to the ball and make half shots.
This will give you the feeling of tha

For @austonandersen who wanted quarantined Freddie and Auston.
--
Though Freddie would never admit it, the NHL’s pausing of the season was not a wholly unwelcome idea. It was horrible, yeah, and incredibly frustrating because the Leafs were still solidly in the playoffs and slowly coming back out of their downward spiral, but.
But.
It’s not that Freddie was exhausted, per se, but being the starting goaltender for a team who seemed to constantly hover on the edge between absolute greatness and the absolute laughing stock of the NHL could sometimes take its toll. Game after game, night after night-- sometimes Freddie did wish for a break in between wishing for better defense and a Cup.
For just a single night to pause, relax on the couch, and not think of an impending match where it would either be a win and he’d have to push himself harder and harder to get to the next one, or a loss and it would be him against the entire Leafs fan base.
He did, however, wish that a global pandemic wasn’t the cause of this break.
Nevertheless, the lack of people on the afternoon streets while Freddie rounded the final corner to his apartment, sweat creating a tacky sort of stick on his back as his final few moments jogging faded into deep breathing, was not the worst thing in the world.
The Doorman tipped a professional greeting as Freddie made his way to the elevator, taking mouthfuls of water in and switching his AirPods into their protective case.
The ride was short; short enough that Freddie was still half reading a Danish news article about new cases when he stepped out, and traced his way down to his apartment, and opened the door.
He took a step beyond the doorway, half a second to read the sentence, træffe beskyttelsesforanstaltninger for at bremse spredningen---
And then stumbled.
Damnit.
Freddie sighed and glanced down at the pair of black and white Nikes about three sizes too small and 90% too flashy to be his own in the middle of the doorway. They were no doubt toed off without a thought, even though their owners most certainly knew that Freddie would be coming in from his afternoon jog and wouldn’t be able to miss them.
He stared balefully at the shoes and stepped over them, passing the shoe rack a couple steps further inside the hallway, where two other similar pairs had been forgotten over time.
Freddie toed off his own shoes, took another sip of water and peeked around the hallway. No sign, so that meant the owner of these ridiculous shoes had ventured deeper down the hall and into the master bedroom.
Sure enough, as Freddie passed through the entrance to his bedroom, shucking off a sweat-soaked tank top to the dirty clothes hamper, he noticed steam billowing from the master bath’s doorway.
“Matty?” Freddie called, as though the visitor would be anyone else.
There was a pause and the shower water turned off. A few seconds passed and Freddie used the brief moment of silence to open his dresser to pull out a pair of black boxers.
Then the bathroom door opened and a dark head peeked out, “Yeah?”
Freddie didn’t answer, just took in the sight as Auston emerged fully, hair slick and white towel tied haphazardly across his waist. Auston dragged a smaller towel through his hair, “What’s up?”
Freddie tossed him the black boxers, “How many times have I asked that you put your shoes on the rack?”
Auston grinned and ran the towel through his hair again, flexing his biceps. Freddie, of course, was drawn to the movement, to the way the muscle clenched and relaxed, before flicking cool his eyes back to Auston’s flushed face. Auston shrugged, “See, I meant to do that, but the promise of your shower was too much.”
Freddie didn’t buy it. When not focused on hockey, Auston’s main goal seemed to be driving Freddie insane. Insane, in several varying ways that both pissed Freddie off and made something burning hot burrow in his chest.
“You mean-- the identical shower to yours downstairs, in your own apartment?”
Auston shrugged again and scratched at the cut of his hip, where tiny rivulets of water were pooling and absorbing into the towel. “My apartment is missing things.”
“Hm,” Freddie murmured before shifting by Auston, taking care to pass close enough that he could feel the heat of the shower on Auston’s skin and smell his own shampoo and body wash on him, but not quite close enough to touch him. He shut the bathroom door behind him and pulled his jogging pants and underwear off.
Showering was a quick, perfunctory affair. Freddie didn't let his thoughts linger or stray-- especially not to the boy no doubt making himself comfortable on the couch. If he did, he'd be in there for hours and Auston, who might just be the most impatient boy in the world, would certainly have something to say about it.
Sure enough, when Freddie was dressed in soft grey sweatpants, socks, and nothing else, Auston was lounging across the couch, face buried in his phone and thumbs moving rapidly across the screen.
The TV was off, like it had been since the PGA announced that golf had been suspended for the time being. Freddie frowned at the thought, but leaned over to swipe the remote from the coffee table. When he glanced back at Auston, Auston’s eyes were on Freddie. He wordlessly curled his legs up to his chest, and when Freddie sat down, taking up the space where Matty’s feet had been, Auston spread out again and rested his calves on Freddie’s lap.
Freddie traced a line down Auston’s shin in thanks and turned the TV to the NHL channel.
They sat in silence for a few minutes; Auston texting and then pausing and texting again, and Freddie mindlessly drawing patterns on the warm skin of Auston’s legs while watching highlights between a Stars and Predators game from last month.
Auston shifted and poked Freddie’s abs softly with his toe. “Mitchy wants to know where I am.”
“Does he want to come over?”
“He can’t. We’re self-quarantining, remember? Players aren’t supposed to be around each other.”
“Oh yes,” Freddie said with a pointed glance to the distinct lack of six feet between them, “Self- quarantining.”
But Auston’s attention was back on his phone. Freddie allowed it for a few more minutes, but as Auston’s eyebrow furrows like they do when he begins to start stressing about something hockey related, he sat up and snagged the IPhone from Auston’s hand.
“Dude,” Auston groaned half-heartedly, briefly trying to grab it back before giving up and laying back. He looked up at Freddie from under his eyelashes and the thing is--
The thing is, Freddie loves it when he does that. For a kid who had an entire dynasty thrust upon him, for a kid who’s had to grow up in one of the harshest spotlights in their sport, when he’s looking up at him like that, Freddie is reminded that Matts is still just a good-hearted kid. It reminds him that the quarantine isn’t all bad because it has given him quiet times where he and Matty can just be.
He must be doing that intense creeper stare that Auston bitches about, because Auston was nudging him again, “What?”
Freddie wanted to tell him all of that, but he doesn’t think he has the words in either English or Danish to try and get what he meant across. So he shrugged, “You’ll see him soon. All of them.”
“I’m just bored. I want to play hockey.” Auston threw his head back on the pillow his head was cushioned on, “That’s all I want to do right now.”
The inflection Auston uses, the slight undercurrent of whine, well, Freddie has never pretended that it didn’t do things to him.
It always had; even when Auston was a fresh faced nineteen year old who was just learning how much he could push before Freddie would react.
And Auston knew it, whether he used it meaningfully or not.
Freddie tilted his head and added some tone in his voice, “That’s all you want to do?”
Auston picked his head up slowly, “Well I mean-- not all I want to do. I- I mean, I can think of other things I’d be fine doing.”
Freddie let the fingers grazing against Auston’s shin drift higher, smiling slightly when Auston automatically opened his legs, “No, if you want to play hockey, we could play Xbox hockey.”
“Hm,” Auston hummed, lips quirked up at the ends as he pretended to be deep in thought. When he grew tired of waiting, he sat up, and Freddie had no problem using his larger frame to haul Auston up completely, until he could resettle in Freddie’s lap, either leg sprawled adjacent to Freddie’s thighs, “I actually think I just got a better offer.”
He did love the sound of that. Nevertheless, Freddie let his hands splay over the stretched cotton of Auston’s boxers. When Auston smiled wider and let his eyes flicker closed, eyes draped loosely around Freddie’s neck, Freddie lifted his right palm and brought it down hard.
Auston’s eyes opened wide at the pop.
Freddie lifted Auston off and climbed to his feet. He made his way around the couch and started towards his bedroom without a look back, “If you had picked up your shoes, you wouldn’t have to wait.”
Freddie privately smiled when he heard Auston curse and stumble over himself to put his shoes on the rack.

2023 World Amateur
Golfers From 50 States 17 Countries Prepare to Descend on Myrtle Beach for the 40th Annual World Amateur Handicap Championship Golf’s premier recreational amateur tournament is preparing to celebrate a milestone anniversary, and 3,260 players from all 50 states and 17 countries are descending on Myrtle Beach for an event that is equal parts competition and camaraderie. The 40th annual PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, a 72-hole, net stroke play event, will be played August 28 through September 1 along Myrtle Beach’s Grand Strand. The inaugural World Am was played in hopes of filling what had been a slow week in Myrtle Beach’s tourism calendar in 1984, and from those humble origins, the tournament has grown into an international event. From hurricanes and power outages to giving away golf course condos and Paula Morton holing out from 70 yards to claim the mantle of World Champion, the World Am has seen a little bit of everything over the years. “The PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap is a one-of-a-kind event, and we are looking forward to celebrating Year 40,” tournament director Scott Tomasello said. “This event is always a celebration of the game and the people who love it, which will certainly be the case this year. More than 3,200 golfers from across the globe are coming to Myrtle Beach, and we look forward to providing an unforgettable experience on and off the course.” The World Am, which has been called the “Every Man’s Major,” allows regular golfers, who are flighted by age, gender and handicap, the rare opportunity to compete over 72 holes, with flight winners advancing to the World Championship Playoff at the Grande Dunes Resort Course. Highlighting the World Am’s broad appeal, there are players as old as 90 and as young as 16 registered for the 2023 tournament, while Portugal and Canada lead the nations sending international participants. The average handicap for tournament players is 11.8, and 50 of Myrtle Beach’s best courses will host the tournament. The World Am flights players into 11 divisions – men 49 and under, senior men (50-59), mid-senior men (60-69), super senior men (70-79), seasoned seniors (80+), women (59 and under), senior women (60+), the gross division, senior (50+) gross division, mid-senior (60+) gross division and women’s gross division. There is also a “Just For Fun” flight, created for players who want to enjoy the World Am experience without the pressure of competition. After four days of tournament play, all flight winners will compete for the right to be crowned “World Champion” at the Grande Dunes Resort Course on Friday, September 1. While the competition initially lures players to the tournament, it’s only part of what keeps them coming back. At the heart of the World Am’s appeal is the camaraderie among its participants, and much of that kinship is fostered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole. Each night of the event, the 19th Hole takes over all 120,000 square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, providing participants with free food and drinks, live entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, a golf expo, and more. How to choose a golf bag? Opinion from Sunny
How to choose a golf bag? Are you just starting to play golf or do you need a new golf bag? Discover our tips to find the perfect bag for all golfers among the many models available on the market. It's not easy to be sure of your choice, especially since the golf bag must be practical, durable, stylish and easy to carry while being large enough to hold all the golf accessories for a round of golf: 14 golf clubs including wedges, sets of irons, putters and drivers, golf balls, pairs of golf shoes, umbrella, cap, appropriate clothing for rainy days ... with pockets for the GPS watch and your keychain ... So tripod bag, carry bag, shoulder bag, tour bag, golf cart bag, cart bag, travel bag, practice bag, mini bag, leather bag or other material ... ? Let's find out.
FIND THE best golf bags THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS
First of all, you have to determine the use you are going to make of it in order to find the bag that corresponds the most to your expectations. If you're looking for a large bag in which you can store your shoulder strap, clubs and other gear, you can choose a large bag with lots of exterior pockets like a cart bag. Be sure to buy a bag model with a travel cover to make it even easier to carry. Then, you can always buy lighter bags like the tripod backpack when you just need to carry the bare necessities. Choose models with Velcro that provide a better hold for your equipment.
Golfers, both beginners and seniors, are becoming more and more demanding. Fortunately, manufacturers are getting stricter about the quality of the bags they put on the market. Of course, the latest bags are mostly better in terms of quality, but you can also find used best golf cart bags (i.e. from less recent collections) that have impeccable finishes. It is therefore important to check the finish of your bag at the time of purchase, the materials and fabrics used. Opt for waterproof and moisture-resistant fabrics and closures to protect your equipment and ensure the durability of your golf bag. Leather bags are generally more resistant, but there are also nylon or velvet models that are also very popular for their lightness.
CHOOSE BAGS WITH ENOUGH STORAGE SPACE We advise you to opt for a multi-pocket bag which is very fashionable lately. The ideal is to have pockets and compartments for all your golf equipment and materials as well as for your phone, glasses... Make sure that the pockets open well in order to facilitate your task.

Has Golf Changed?
I played with him at Colonial the first week back out, but I sort of said, ‘OK, wait until he gets to a proper golf course, he’ll have to rein it back in.’ This is as proper as they come, and look what’s happened.”
—Rory McIlroy, on Bryson DeChambeau
“So many times I relied on science, and it worked every single time.”
—DeChambeau, following his U.S. Open victory
For a moment, let’s forget the specifics. Let’s forget the weight and distance gain, the muscle activation fitness regimen, the protein shakes, the single iron length, the putting lasers, and a thousand other things that fall under the umbrella of “science.” Forget it all and think broadly. We need some distance to understand Bryson DeChambeau’s win at the U.S. Open—the most consequential result for golf since Tiger Woods won the Masters in 1997—and to internalize the only conclusion that really matters: On an intellectual level, nobody else is trying hard enough.
If that sounds like an insult to a group of professionals who have dedicated their lives to becoming elite practitioners of the sport, so be it. DeChambeau is putting them to shame simply because he has the courage not just to seek out innovative ideas, but to pursue them with monomaniacal energy. His commitment is so rigorous, so fanatical, that everyone else comes off looking like a dilettante.
This makes people uncomfortable, fans and players alike, but the ultimate legacy of his astonishing win at Winged Foot—a course that was supposed to be the antithesis to and kryptonite for the DeChambeau Style—is that we can no longer dismiss him as a pretentious pseudoscientist. That comfort is gone, and now we reckon with a reality that forces from the mouths of the doubters the three most painful words imaginable.
He was right.

Let’s talk about Tiger in ’97. With that win at Augusta, which so quickly validated and then exceeded every bit of hype, the game was fundamentally changed. The kids who watched him then, and who are dominating the PGA Tour today, understood golf entirely through the context of Tiger. His power, his fitness, his passion, his competitive edge. These were the templates they followed. Some, like Patrick Reed, even began to wear red on Sunday and to speak with the same clipped cadence. Even in less extreme cases, Tiger’s physical and psychological influence was felt. You see it everywhere today; the game exists in his image.
What will the DeChambeau Effect look like? In 15 years, will we watch a new generation of hulked-up bombers chain-guzzle protein shakes, pecs bursting out of their golf shirts, each iron as long as the next, as they analyze complex topographical charts and an assistant clocks the speed of their putts?
The answer is, probably yes. DeChambeau is so full of good ideas that some of them are going to trickle down, particularly if he keeps winning. Whatever Chris Como, his coach, is doing, other coaches will do. Muscle activation technique, which has been a staple in the NFL for years, will become widespread in golf. Barring any major rules change, power will reign even more completely than it did before, and player physiques will reflect it. All of DeChambeau’s good ideas will be copied.
That’s because DeChambeau is golf’s answer to Billy Beane. He takes a Moneyball approach to every facet of the game; he’s open to literally any idea that might make the sport easier and help him shoot a low score, and he’ll pursue the slight edges with monastic fervor. Playing within a game that hews closely to tradition, socially and competitively, DeChambeau has the self-confidence to ignore conventional wisdom. The difference is that Beane sought out market inefficiencies because his Oakland A’s operated from a major payroll deficit. DeChambeau, on the other hand, was already supremely talented. When an NCAA and U.S. Amateur champ opens his mind to the cosmos in an effort to squeeze every possible advantage, Winged Foot is the result.
Writ large, that’s both the lesson and consequence of the past weekend, and the single element that young aspiring golfers should take to heart. To compete in the Bryson Era, it’s not enough to have talent and to work hard. You better think hard, too. You better be so committed that you treat golf like an experiment to be solved, and you better stumble upon your own innovations. DeChambeau’s long-lasting effect on this game won’t be physical. It will be mental.

Do you find DeChambeau invigorating, or infuriating? The answer probably says less about DeChambeau, and more about you, how you feel about change, about tradition, about innovation, and about the limitations of what golf should be.
Of all the players who commented on DeChambeau when it became clear that he would win the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy’s remarks were the most interesting.
“I don’t really know what to say because that’s just the complete opposite of what you think a U.S. Open champion does,” McIlroy said. “Whether that’s good or bad for the game, I don’t know, but it’s just—it’s not the way I saw this golf course being played or this tournament being played. It’s kind of hard to really wrap my head around it … I think it’s brilliant, but I think he’s taken advantage of where the game is at the minute.”
Nobody explicitly asked him for an appraisal on whether it was “good or bad,” but in Rory’s defense, that part of the question is implied. Still, if you’re like me, you read a bit of negative judgment in the answer, and a bit of frustration. DeChambeau seems to have found a cheat code, and the idea that it’s working might seem unjust, especially to a player like McIlroy who has experienced a slew of difficulties at the majors in the last half-decade.
Yet to call it a shortcut is to undersell DeChambeau’s outrageous work ethic, the months of body transformation during the pandemic, the Saturday night range session under the lights at Winged Foot. Still, the ideas themselves aren’t so wild. If there’s a comical angle here, it’s that despite the caricature of DeChambeau as some kind of occult physicist, the fundamental beliefs behind his “innovations” are fairly simple. In July, I learned all about his weight gain and muscle training regimen, and while the specifics get pretty complicated, the reasoning behind it can be expressed with a very simple equation: More weight and more strength = more distance = more wins.
It’s not even a new concept. Tiger’s fitness regimen changed the game in similar ways, but DeChambeau wanted to do more than simply follow in Tiger’s footsteps. He wanted to continue the evolution and blow it out to its most extreme form, and his self-belief is so total that he refuses to be held back by cautionary tales.
Example: The reason most people thought he’d fail at Winged Foot is because the thick rough punishes errant tee shots, and DeChambeau’s length comes at the expense of accuracy. If you can’t hit fairways, you can’t win—not there. It sounds logical, but look closer and it’s easy to see how conventional wisdom fails. What actually happened, and what DeChambeau noticed before the week began along with his coach Chris Como and Mark Broadie, is that the fairways were so narrow that they punished everyone, long hitter or short. Nobody hitting driver could reasonably be expected to hold a high percentage. So, in that case, why not be long?
“Everyone talked about hitting fairways out here,” Xander Schauffele said on Sunday, when asked about DeChambeau. “It’s not about hitting fairways. It’s about hitting on the correct side of the hole … you’d rather be the guy in the rough with a lob wedge than with an 8-iron or 7-iron.”
Precisely. Of course, wide fairways pose the same conundrum. Punish everyone, and length wins. Punish no one, and length wins. You see the common denominator: Length wins.
Now, it’s not quite that simple. DeChambeau had a comprehensive game plan, played beautifully from the rough and was spectacular with the putter, particularly on Sunday. But it starts with rejecting the original idea, that aggression won’t work. It starts by rejecting the warnings.

The nice thing about athletic innovation is that the results are measurable. DeChambeau’s physical transformation attracts the bulk of public attention, and puts the focus on his drives (which are spectacular). Did it work? Well, in the 2020 season, he finished first in strokes gained/off the tee. That’s compared to 24th, 12th, and 35th in prior years. It worked.
His putting game deserves its own feature-length article, but you can get a small taste from this quote: “If I hit a 40-footer and it says 10.1 miles per hour on the device, I know that I’ve executed it correctly. And if I see the ball go two feet past that 40-foot mark, I know it’s perfect.” So it involves radar and arm locks and lasers and men holding towels when necessary. Did it work? In 2020, he finished 10th in sg/putting, compared to 28th, 32nd and a woeful 145th in prior years. It worked.
Today, his approach game is relatively poor (119th by the strokes gained metric last season), but you can bet he’ll find a way to improve that, too, and if his performance from the thick grass at Winged Foot is any indication, he’s on his way. “I don’t think they can set it up for him, to be honest,” Louis Oosthuizen said on Sunday, “he’s so strong out of the rough.” In fact, DeChambeau was first in the entire field at Winged Foot in strokes gained/approach, accumulating a massive 7.551 strokes in four rounds. It’s working.
You can view this success as a referendum on the specific techniques DeChambeau is using to improve his game. Yes, there will be copycats. He’ll be very influential in that regard, perhaps more than anyone since Tiger. But as DeChambeau himself readily concedes, “not everybody has to do it my way.” The fact that he’s thrived with muscle activation technique and lasers and protein shakes doesn’t mean that everyone will. It doesn’t even mean that he will, at least not forever.
The true revolution that DeChambeau has initiated is not a physical or technical one, brilliant as those elements might look today. No, he’s leading an intellectual transformation, and it’s defined by both the ability to consider golf in new and counterintuitive ways and the courage to pursue those ideas with a zealot’s obsession. In that sense, he has already lapped his contemporaries and put them on the defensive, and he’s done it on the basis of principles (“length wins!”) that seem shockingly obvious.

There’s a story, almost certainly apocryphal, about Christopher Columbus attending a dinner party at a nobleman’s castle after his voyages. At one point, a guest spoke up to say that discovering a new trade route to the Indies wasn’t such a great accomplishment; really, anyone could do it. Rather than respond, Columbus asked for an egg. When it arrived, he challenged everyone at the table to stand the egg straight on its end. They all tried, they all failed; the egg toppled every time. When they were done, Columbus took the egg, cracked the end, and stood it straight up with no problem. “And now that I’ve shown you how it’s done,” he said, “any fool could manage.”
Bryson DeChambeau has cracked the egg. What happens next is up to everyone else.
