6 Disc Golf Driving Tips For Beginners

Disc golf is a great hobby and sport to get into. It’s accessible to most people and it doesn’t cost a lot of money to get started. You just need a few discs and you are good to go. After that, just find a local disc golf course and you’re all set for hundreds of hours of fun and exercise.

Like I said earlier, disc golf is easy to get into but once you get into playing, you’ll want to improve on a lot of accepts of your game. One that many beginners have trouble with is driving. It’s a complex move that can take many hours of practice to perform well and consistently.

Since you are new to the sport of disc golf, I’m not going to go into the detailed steps of performing a backhand or forehand drive. What I am going to share with you is a few simple tips that will get you started in the right direction.

If you take these tips to heart I promise you you’ll see some improvement and have more fun on the course. Without further ado, let’s jump into the list of my disc golf driving tips for beginners.

1. Disc Down

As a beginner to disc golf, you are going to want to disc down. So, what do I mean by disc down? I mean you are going to want to take that shiny new driver you bought and keep it in your bag.

New players should really focus on throwing slower discs. By slower discs, I mean your putters and midrange discs. Leave those high-speed fairway drivers and distance drivers in your bag or maybe even at home. When you step up to that tee, grab a putter and really focus on throwing it with great form.

When I first started playing, I was like most beginners and wanted a high-speed driver. But after I tried using it for one round, I quickly became frustrated. I found out my form and arm speed wasn’t yet suited for such a fast disc.

A buddy of mine saw my frustration and recommended I disc down and use one of my midranges. He was right and I had a lot more fun when I put that driver back in my bag and started throwing the slower midrange disc. As I got better and my arm got faster than I dusted off that driver I had tried to use to earlier.

2. Stand Still

When I first started playing disc golf, I drove my discs standing still. During that first round I just naturally walked up to the tee pad and with my feet firmly planted on the concrete, I hurled the disc at the basket.

It wasn’t until later that I noticed that my friends were using a run-up during their drives. When I did more research, I learned this was called an X-stepand that it could add more power and distance to your drive. While that is all true, I recommend you leave it out for now.

Driving a disc is a complicated sequence of steps and as a beginner, I’m suggesting you leave out some of those steps in favor of others. In this case, leave off the run-up and focus on the reach back, releasing your disc and following through. Once you master those things, you can then focus on getting the run-up down.

After I noticed my friends and even the pros using an x step, I tried to add it into my drive. But after a few rounds, I learned the hard way that without the perfect form the run-up didn’t really add anything. It mostly took away accuracy. Do yourself a favor and skip it for now.

3. Keep It flat

Something you’ll want to focus on while driving is how you are releasing the disc. When I started playing disc golf, I remember my first drives being very inconsistent. This was mostly due to how I was releasing the disc.

I was throwing the disc with my wrist bent. This resulted in my drivers quickly turning left after leaving my hand and hyzering out into the woods somewhere. Not the most fun you can have on the disc golf course. No one wants to spend time searching for their disc in the leaves when they could be playing.

Do yourself a favor and focus on taking your putter or midrange disc and releasing it flat and low. This should help you get a more consistent result off the tee. As you learn how your discs fly you can start to experiment with different angles.

4. Understable Plastic

While throwing slower discs can be beneficial for newer disc golfers, something else beginners should consider about their discs is the disc stability. Stability or the high-speed turn rating of the disc refers to the disc’s tendency to turn left or right after leaving the players had.

Understable discs are recommended for newer players. Newer players tend to have slower arm speeds and at slower arm speeds, understable discs are easier to throw. When an unstable disc is thrown by a newer player, they are likely to see a nice straight flight. If the same player were to throw a more stable or overstable disc in the same way, they will likely see their disc take a hard turn left (for a right-handed player) and crash into the ground.

But how do you know if a disc is understable? I mentioned the high-speed turn rating earlier and how it measures the tendency of the disc to turn once it leaves a player’s hand. This measurement is printed on most discs. If you’ve noticed the four numbers printed on most discs, this is what I’m talking about. It’s called the flight rating system and the third number in the sequence is the turn rating. A disc is considered understable when this number is a negative number. As a beginner, you are looking for a turn rating of -1 to -5.

5. Ask For Help

If you are reading this article you are already doing this tip. As a new player, you can speed up your driving ability development by asking for help. This can be from online sources, like this website, or in person.

Getting general help online will point you in the right place. You can get more specific suggestions on help with your release or follow throw by using online resources. There are also great online forums like Reddit that you can ask questions or even post a video of you driving and get help.

While online resources are great, I also want to point you toward your disc golf buddies or local players as a great resource. If you are having a specific problem with your drive, asking those players around you might be the best option. They can see your drive in person and point out maybe what you are doing wrong and help you change your form to correct it.

Also, just playing with better players will help you develop as a disc golf player.

6. Practice

This tip may seem like a no-brainer. By practicing your drive over and over you will see improvement. I would suggest taking your bag to an open field near you and throwing each disc one after the other.

This helps because you can really focus on your form and making changes to improve it. You also won’t have to worry about obstacles you may see on the course or the added decision making that playing a round of disc golf can have. By regularly practicing your dive in an open field you will see improvement.

I also want to point out that I didn’t personally take this tip to heart until much later in my disc golf development. When I first started out, I just played rounds of disc golf and maybe did some putting practice. It wasn’t until much later that I added in fieldwork. After I did, I really started to see improvement in my drive.

The tutorial below will show you how to make a golf simulator using the OptiShot 2 sensor. Keep in mind that the screen we are building in this example is for foam balls only. Upgrade the Turf on OptiShot 2 My one main issue with the OptiShot 2 is the turf that comes on it. The turf is thin and the surface beneath it is hard. So if you take any type of divot it is all the more obvious. Luckily I stumbled upon Arsene Golf where they make upgraded turfs specifically for the OptiShot. I went with the JagManJoe Tee Line turf which is easy to swap out (everything is velcro) and much more realistic to hit off of. This issue is that now the hitting pad is that much higher off the ground so we need to build a stance pad to bring the ground around it up to the same height. Building the Stance Pad To increase the height with as little weight as possible we are using 2 inch foam board insulation with 1/4″ plywood adhered to both sides. This will keep the foam from collapsing. I made my stance pad 4 feet by 6 feet. This allows for even the tallest of friends to have enough room on the pad (with a driver) and not feel like they are going to accidentally step off the back. The plywood and foam board can be cut down with a circular saw all at the same time. Lay the 1/4″ plywood on top of the foam and set the saw depth to not cut quite all the way through the foam. After making the cut, snap the foam board end off. If you want you could save this excess and make a floating pad for your left handed friends. Layout the sensor where you want it and cut the hole with a circular saw and remove the foam below it. Then mark and drill a large hole in the foam for the USB cord from the sensor to exit. Adding Padding Carpet pad will soften up the surface that you are standing on and make it feel more realistic. Apply a layer of carpet pad adhesive or spray adhesive and cut the carpet pad to fit. I found that you can buy a rug pad which is the same thing but comes in a smaller size for about $25. I now realize that I was cutting the pad upside down and it would have been a lot easier to cut with the vapor barrier (plastic layer) up. I even installed it upside down 🙈. Adding the Turf I was able to pick up an outdoor rug that looks like turf for about $20. I then wrapped the stance pad with it and stapled it to the bottom, trimming any excess. Installing the Sensor After the bottom was stapled I flipped it over and cut the hole in the turf for the sensor. I left a little extra to wrap the sides of the hole. You could try to tuck it between the plywood and foam but I found that with the sensor in place it was tight enough that it didn’t move. Measure the height of the sensor and add plywood scraps under the sensor to make sure the turf is slightly higher than the stance pad. I found that this is best because if you take a divot sometimes the club will sweep through and hit the start of the turf that covers the stance pad at the end of the sensor and could pull it up a bit. If you get the XL turf upgrade that won’t be an issue. Locate the hole in the foam for the USB cord and cut a hole in the turf. Feed the USB cable through the hole and plug it into your sensor. Then slip the sensor into place. Mine was a very snug fit but if you can get it in place then you may need to trim the plywood and/or foam a bit. Determine your Screen Requirements If this is going to be strictly a golf simulator then simply hanging a drop cloth could be enough. However, I had a few requirements for my screen. – No real golf balls, only foam (glass garage doors and concrete floors don’t mix well) – Has to double as a TV screen – Not too intrusive, must be close to wall. – Has to be able to handle some ambient light With these requirements, I ultimately decided to build a frame that would suspend the screen 5″ or so off the wall and keep the 16:9 screen taught with bungees. The screen needed to stay tight to keep a good picture but it also needed to flex enough to absorb the energy of the foam ball. The screen I went with was an 180″ ALR (ambient light rejecting) 16:9 projector screen. I wasn’t 100% sure whether or not the balls would damage the screen but after having played on it for weeks now I haven’t noticed any damage. If you are looking to hit real golf balls then I would recommend an enclosure with impact screen like this. Installing Top Screen Support To get started on the frame I assembled two 2x4s in the shape of an L for the top and bottom. The overall frame length should be 12″ more than the screen. Since we will be attaching 2x4s to each end for the sides of the frame we need to subtract the thickness of the 2x4s (2 x 1.5″ = 3″). Therefore the L shaped parts of the frame (top and bottom) should be 9″ longer than the screen. Before installing the L on the wall, stretch the screen out on the ground and center the L at the top of the screen. Then install 1-1/4″ washer head screws in the L at each grommet location, leaving the head up enough to get the bungee under it. This is how the bungees will hook onto the frame. The same can be done for the bottom L as well. Locate the studs, level and secure the L with 3-1/2″ wood screws into the studs. Hanging the Screen Start by feeding the bungee through the back for the grommet and then hooking it onto the corresponding screw on the frame. The ball on the end of the bungee should be bigger than the grommets on the screen. Install the Bottom Support Measure down from the top of the frame 12″ more than your screen height and make a mark at each end. Make sure the end of the bottom L is plumb with the top L. To do so you can use weight on the end of a string and drop it from the top L end. Or just measure from the corner of the room and make sure those distances are the same. Locate the studs, level and secure the L with 3-1/2″ wood screws into the studs and use the bungees to attach the screen to the screw heads on the frame. Install the Sides The side 2x4s show be cut to 12″ longer than the height of the screen. Then they can be screws onto the top and bottom Ls using 3-1/2″ wood screws. Tensioning the Screen Place the screws for the bungees on the side 2x4s at the same height as the grommets and attach with bungees. Test out the spring back of the screen by hitting a few foam balls into it. If it is too tight, the balls might bounce off the screen too fast. If it is too loose, the balls might hit the back wall and bounce back from hitting a hard surface. Adjust the screw placement on the frame or the length of the bungees to add more tension or take some away until you are happy with the results. Adding Batting to the Frame To soften the edges of the frame and bungees when wrapping with fabric, first you must cut down strips of batting and staple to the frame, over the bungees. Preparing the Fabric Cut down strips of fabric that are more than big enough to cover the area between the screen and extend to wrap the frame. I just cut my 36″ wide fabric in 1/2 (one for each side). Then apply double faced tape to one side. Securing the Fabric to the Screen Temporarily staple or clamp the fabric to the frame so that it is suspended over the screen with the double faced tape lined up with the edge of the screen. Then staple through the tape and into the black border of screen. The screen itself is thin and staples will easily be pulled through. The double faced tape will not only help keep the staples from pulling through but it will also leave a crisp line on the edge of the fabric. Attaching the Fabric to the Frame Peel the other side of the double faced tape off and fold the fabric over itself and staple it to the frame. Any excess can but tucked behind the frame or folded over and stapled together. Projector & Wiring Selecting and installing a projector depends on your environment. I have to deal with a lot of ambient light so I went with a brighter projector which you can identify by looking at the amount of lumens. I recommend going with a quality brand like Epson, Optima, BenQ, Panasonic, etc. If you want to save some money, look on your local Facebook marketplace or search Ebay (which is where I got mine). The USB cord coming out of the sensor gets connected to computer that meets the requirements for OptiShot 2. Then from the computer you can connect to the projector with an HDMI cable. However, since I have an Apple computer and am using an Apple TV for standard viewing, I can connect wirelessly with AirPlay. Round 17 – Lost My Head

My first round of the year with a full foursome of my work buddies took me to the well-manicured Washington County course in Hartford, around 45 minutes west of Port Washington.   I’ve played here once before and enjoyed the wide-open fairways, a few challenging water holes, and the club-like atmosphere.   While Ken and Dave joined me on the first tee, Mark didn’t join until the back nine due to a work issue that popped up.   Work can be a bite with its politics and long hours, but when it eats into golf time is when it really drives me nuts.  Ken actually stepped down a year ago to a less stressful job at work to save his family life and sanity.  It seems to be working out great for him so kudos to him for making the big move.   It’s always good to get out with the work guys and shoot the breeze about work craziness and possible changes.   I paid $32 as a non-resident county to walk 18 today.  Seems like a lot after a lot of free winter rounds, but it does include getting in my work support group time so it is a great deal.

Work buds Mark, Ken, and Dave

Because I struggled in the water and wind last week, I figured that just breaking 90 would be a decent achievement today.  I also wanted to experiment a bit by carrying less clubs in order to lighten my bag and preserve my back and energy throughout the round.  I chose to take just 5 clubs, my driver, putter, 4 iron, approach wedge, and special Divnick Whole-In-One club.    I carried them in my regular bag instead of my mini-bag since I haven’t perfected the carrying straps on my mini-bag yet and the weight difference between the two bags is only a few pounds.   It should be interesting to see how the Divnivk fills in for my missing clubs and the impact it has on my scoring.

So I parred the first 4 holes with just using my standard 4 clubs while keeping the Divnick in the bag.  I focused on a nice smooth rhythm on my drives and not over swinging on my 4-iron and wedge.   And the greens were in good shape and pretty straight forward so my putting started out decent.  While I always thought I scored better playing alone and being more focused, I think the opposite is actually true.  Playing with others brings out my competitive juices, which typically results in better scoring.  Also having other putts to help my reads is a huge plus.   Anyways I continued playing strong thru the front nine, shooting a 2 over par 38 that included my first birdie of the year on the 8th.  And I didn’t take the Divnick out at all – so just 4 clubs to shoot a 38.  Crazy lucky.

So now all I had to do was shoot a 41 on the back to break 80.  I haven’t broken 80 in probably 20 years– mainly because I hardly ever play 18 outside of scrambles and I’m not very good.  I quickly bogeyed the first four holes on the back, including a few poor Divnick shots. I knew breaking 80 would be tough as the wind was really picking up with gusts around 20 mph.  The turning point of my round was the par 3, 175 yard 14th which was protected by a huge pond and a decent head wind in our face.  I pulled a 4-iron a bit left of the green that landed on a hill on the other side of the pond, but then rolled back into the water for a penalty and an eventual double bogey 5.  Argh, that was a killer.  I ended up shooting a 43 on the back to give me an 81 for the round.  So close.  I used my Divnick around 4 times on the back and I didn’t hit those shots very well.  Having my full set of clubs may have made a 1-2 stroke difference on the back.  But maybe the heavier bag would have impacted my back and negated that.  Hmmm.

So with the gusting winds on the back nine, my lighter bag fell over a couple of times as it was parked by the greens while I was putting.   I didn’t think too much of it until I ended the round and noticed that my precious Divnick Whole-In-One club was missing its frickin’ head!  Just a shaft with an open ring where the head and its plastic connector thingy once lived.  It must have come loose/broke off after one of those bag falls.  The last fall was on the 17th so I hopped in a cart and darted back to the 17th green to find it but no such luck.  It may have popped off earlier but I didn’t notice it because I didn’t need to use the Divnick the last few holes.  Crap, that’s a $200 special club.  I’m hoping someone will turn the head in at the clubhouse or I’ll have to go back to Divnick to get a replacement – for free hopefully.  I don’t want my Divnick experiment to end this way!

Final Score: 81 (38,43).  1 birdie, 8 pars, 1 lost ball, playing time 4 hours and 40 minutes.   Wow, I almost broke 80 with basically just 4 clubs.  It was great playing with my work buds, especially with Ken who had successfully escaped a lot of the work stress that I am going thru now.   While all these guys were just getting started with their golf season (3 months behind me), they all played very decent with the highlight being big hitter Ken firing an awesome birdie on a very challenging long par 4.  Retreating to the clubhouse afterwards, we relaxed with a smooth Stella from the tap and appreciated the gorgeous day and good company.  And drinking Stella was special because my 3rd grandchild was born 2 weeks ago in Portland and her name is also Stella.  Life is good.   Even when mother nature rips your $200 all-everything club from your bag to bring you down to earth after shooting an 81 with just 4 clubs…

Chapter 10 - Golf with Frisbees

Let us take a couple of steps back now, clear our minds, pretend like we know nothing about this life-engulfing sport obsession of ours, and see disc golf from the outside looking in. Often, once we embrace the game and fall in love, we are no longer able to perceive our thoughts and actions through an objective lens. Our vision of disc golf is already distorted by our personal experience, and that distortion makes it seem all the more glorious and wonderful.

But what do other people think when they hear us talk of disc golf? The vast majority of the outside world doesn’t have a clue what we’re talking about, other than it must be related to a term that they recognize. Golf. When defined simply in words like “golf with Frisbees,” the outsider might say, “Ooooh. Now I see.” But still, to say that they understand the game as intimately as we do is like saying that a person is a chef after learning to make toast. Right? They can’t truly understand disc golf until they experience it and taste the sweet nectar uniquely extracted through the collision of plastic and metal.

My brother is passionate about disc golf. It took a single game on a hillside covered in weeds and scrub oak to become addicted. Now he talks of the sport frequently at home and at work, even to those who have no understanding (and face it, probably no real interest) of disc golf. One time he was at home, excitedly sharing disc golf stories and probably telling tales of amazing professional throws he’d watched online. His wife, who had probably let the sound of his voice wash over her like the pleasant, yet completely passive sound of elevator music, finally chimed in.

“Why do you take disc golf so seriously?” It seemed silly to her that he was so excited about “golf with Frisbees.”

Thankfully, his young son came to his defense. “Mom, other people like baseball and football, and they talk about those all the time. Dad just feels the same way about Disc Golf!”

Thank you, my wonderful nephew! That is it! Why can’t a bunch of grownups feel just as excited about the game of disc golf as millions upon millions of other people do about games like football, soccer, basketball, hockey, synchronized swimming, or curling? It’s completely natural. It doesn’t make us nerds, outcasts, or weirdos, just because we like a sport that they don’t understand!

But my brother’s home wasn’t his only front. He also carried that love of the sport to work. One of his coworkers had heard so much about his love for disc golf that they went to watch a local tournament. That coworker was surprised upon arriving at the scene. Large numbers of people were carrying sizable bags of discs, and the holes were…well…sturdy metal cages.

The coworker mused, “Oh. I thought it would be a few guys throwing frisbees into milk crates or something…”

That pretty much sums it up. That is what the outside world thinks. That is how they see us and that is how they envision the sport we love. We’re nerds throwing frisbees into milk crates. The only way to shatter that perception is to get them onto the fairway, put a disc in their hand, and tell them to let it fly.

I’ve personally been involved in efforts to persuade my hometown to embrace disc golf and install a course on one of their park properties. It has been an uphill battle, and I haven’t won yet. I’ve visited with the parks and recreation manager, who graciously acts interested and expresses a half-hearted desire to do something about it, then doesn’t do anything about it. I’ve met with the city council where I had to explain the sport in detail and try to convince them of how popular a course would be, if they would just give it the green light. But it was like I was speaking a completely different language that they could not understand.

The most success we’ve had in that town was when the high school bought seven baskets on a splurge, then not knowing what to do with them, stuck them in the ground in corners of the soccer practice fields and next to the baseball diamonds. There are no tees. There is no course layout. There are no hazards other than fences around the baseball diamonds which might have to be climbed to retrieve an errant disc. I’m grateful that there are basically seven practice baskets near my home, but it isn’t a course, and there is no reason anybody would go there to play an actual round of disc golf.

My efforts have seemed hopeless, primarily because the people in charge have no real understanding of the game or its appeal. They just smile and nod and say, “sounds great,” though you can see in their eyes that they’ve already dozed off while listening to my passionate pleas.

I remember being at the town’s annual “Health Days” festival one spring, and I’d set up a putting basket for kids to try. One of those city council members recognized me.

“Hey, aren’t you the guy who tried to get a course set up in town?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“I feel bad that didn’t work out. It seems like it would have been a lot of fun.” It was polite banter, because he could see the kids having fun trying to toss the putters into the basket. It was like he was finally wrapping his mind around the game I’d tried to describe, but still didn’t really take it seriously.

I thought I’d rub it in a little bit. “Yeah, that was too bad. Since then, we’ve seen Hyrum and Nibley put in nine-hole courses, and Amalga just put in six holes in their little park”

“What?” He looked stunned. “Really? Wow.”

Now let me explain. Hyrum and Nibley are two small towns about eight miles away, with smaller populations. However, they have city representatives that take the development of their parks very seriously. They were excited to put courses on their land. But the real stinger was my mentioning of the town of Amalga which borders my home town, and they have a population just under 500 people. To imagine that a little town of alfalfa fields, that has more livestock than citizens, was more proactive about developing their parks than their much larger neighbor…well, that was an outrage.

The city council member looked surprised, more genuinely disappointed, and walked away. I’m sure he forgot about it once he got to the deep-fried-Twinkie stand. But I wanted him to feel, at least for a moment, that he was the one who was out-of-touch, and not the other way around. I wasn’t the unreasonable nerd that wanted them to install an inexpensive feature in their parks. But instead, he and his city were the ones who were late to the party. There still isn’t a course in my hometown, and I don’t see a future where their will be, unless it is privately owned.

My wife works as a judicial clerk and sits through many hours of court procedures, including drug court, where recovering drug offenders report to the court about their progress in becoming contributing members of the community. In one such hearing, the man who was reporting was asked if he was staying out of trouble.

“Yes, your honor.”

“How have you been spending your time?” the judge asked.

“I’ve been playing a lot of disc golf.”

The judge burst into laughter and asked what that was.

“Well, it’s golf, but with discs…or…um…frisbees.”

The judge laughed again, thinking this was a ridiculous game that the offender had made up in order to justify his lack of responsible activity within the community. My wife cleared her throat, blushing in embarrassment before speaking up.

“Your honor, that is actually a thing. It is becoming quite popular,” she said nervously.

“Oh…OK then.” The judge was surprised that his clerk knew about this game that only a moment earlier seemed more like a drug induced hallucination than a reality. The offender looked relieved.

Eventually disc golf will grow to such an extent that people will know it well, because they’ll see players in the local parks, they’ll see baskets everywhere, and it will creep into the public eye with the ripples of the exploding online media market. Will it ever be mainstream? I don’t know. But it has the potential to at least rise from general obscurity. For now, let them laugh. I don’t care, because I’m playing disc golf, and they aren’t.
