October 8, 2024 - Golden-chevroned Tanager (Thraupis ornata) These tanagers are found in and around forests and in shrubby clearings and gardens in parts of southeastern Brazil. Foraging in pairs or groups, sometimes with other species, they feed on fruit and arthropods. They build cup-shaped nests in trees, bushes, or bromeliads. Females probably incubate the eggs alone.

BOTD: Golden-hooded Tanager
Photo: Greg Lasley
"Very attractive small tanager of humid tropical lowlands. Found in humid evergreen forest edges, plantations, and gardens; at times with mixed-species feeding flocks of honeycreepers and euphonias. Often in pairs, feeding at all levels in fruiting trees and bushes. Sexes look alike: black and blue overall with a white belly and a soft golden hood; in good light, varied purple and turquoise sheens are apparent."

Prefix: Tanager-
A golden or tortoiseshell cat.
Description: scarlet tanagers are small songbirds that belong to the cardinal family and are present in Michigan throughout the summer months. Like many other songbirds, this species is sexually dimorphic. Male tanagers have striking crimson-and-black plumage during the breeding season and drabber olive-and-black plumage during winter, and females are yellow with olive-colored tails and wings year round. Both sexes have thick, pale bills that they use to eat a wide variety of fruits and insects. They breed in shady deciduous forests, and they have a preference for mature beeches, maples, and oaks. Male scarlet tanagers are extremely protective of their breeding grounds, and they will engage trespassers in singing battles and attempt to chase them off if they don't leave.

August 13, 2023 - Golden-crowned Tanager (Iridosornis rufivertex) Found in parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, these tanagers live in mountain woodlands near the tree line. They feed on seeds and insects, foraging in pairs or small groups, often in mixed-species flocks. Little is known about their nesting habits, though they probably breed between February and October depending on the area of their range.
