Trick or Treat
Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown. You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key.
As you travel down it, you will see a village. In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of. There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.
The one who obtains the key must then travel to the Golden Land in accordance with these rules.
On the first twilight, offer the six chosen by the key as sacrifices. On the second twilight, those who remain shall tear apart the two who are close. On the third twilight, those who remain shall praise my noble name. On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill. On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill. On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill. On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill. On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill. On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive. On the tenth twilight, at journey's end, you shall attain to the power of the Golden Land's treasures, once and for the last time.
The witch shall praise the wise and bestow four treasures. One shall be all the gold from the Golden Land. One shall be the resurrection of all the dead souls. One shall be the resurrection of the love that was lost. One shall be to put the witch to sleep for all time.
Solve this riddle and you'll be given candy too.
-- BEATRICE the Golden
As of October 31, 2024...
Market price for pure gold is roughly $88.50 per gram, according to Google. There are 1000 grams per kilogram and there are 1000 kilograms per metric ton. The treasure is said to be 10 tons.
So, $85 x 1000 x 1000 x 10 = $850,000,000
The current exchange rate from US dollar to yen is $1 = ¥152.10 yen, coming out to more than ¥130 billion JPY in illiquid assets. Now, let's say we want to liquidate all the gold into cash, to readily make purchases. Woah, that's a majorly bad investment idea (the value of gold always goes up), but we need money and we need it now... to buy candy.
It's not easy to sell gold. It wasn't easy for me to find information on how to exchange tons of gold into USD, let alone JPY. Unfortunately, I am not plugged in to networks of Saudi princes or Swedish bankers. Let's say, purely hypothetically, I have connections to Russian oligarchs, and I can charter Borris's mega-yacht to float the gold to the Siberian coast from Rokkenjima. Borris is covering the cost of transporting the gold as part of our bargain, otherwise we would have to factor in shipping cost for /ten tons/ of gold. Like all business people that make a living from buying gold, Borris is more than happy to pay me this favor because he will never pay me market price for my treasure. I'll only walk away with 70-90% of the value. Because Borris is offering such a niche service, and because I need money, and I need it now to buy candy, Borris springs the 30% loss on me when we're already in Vladivostok, on Russian soil. He says, "This is the best I can do after seeing 'imperfections'." I say, "fine, dasvidaniya." Borris uses his shady contacts to wire me the money in USD from his Morgan Stanely account.
We were at approximately $850,000,000 worth of illiquid assets.
Now, thanks to Borris, we have $595,000,000...
But wait! There's more...
The money transfer is flagged by the IRS for a gift tax. Any "gift" amount over $1,000,000 is subject to a 40% gift tax rate.
40% of 595000000 = 238000000
595000000 - 238000000 = $357,000,000
I walk away with $357,000,000 and Uncle Sam laughs.
Finally, FINALLY... a 20 lbs bulk box of mini Twix is around $110. That's perfect fun size.
$357,000,000/$110 = 3245454 boxes of mini Twix or 64,909,080 lbs of mini Twix, or 32,454.54 tons of Twix.
Ergo, solving the riddle, discovering the gold, and selling all 10 tons would yield approximately 32, 454.54 tons of mini Twix. In case anyone like, asked....

#OpenDND
[Image ID: Red Background with white lettering with the hashtag Open D&D. End ID]
Here is an an open letter on the Open Gaming License, to Wizards of the Coast.
Looking at the names signed at the bottom, it includes big names: Mage Hand Press, DM Dave, Sly Flouish, Foundry VTT, Kibbles, Midnight Quills, Czepeku, Wyrmworks Publishing, Alchemy RPG, LegendKeeper, and so many more. (I respect all of the creators even if I didn’t include them, I’m just not reprinting all of them in terms of keeping a respectable length of this post).
This letter has been vetted by (at least one) lawyers and other PR services to make sure that what they are saying is factually correct (to avoid legal troubles) and summarized in a way that is easier to understand (to non intellectual property attorneys).
Visit the website here for more through information and to sign your name: https://www.opendnd.games/
Exerts from the open letter below:
The Open Gaming License (OGL) is a legal framework that allows creators to use the rules and ideas of roleplaying games in their own works.
However, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) has announced an updated OGL (version 1.1)—an attempt to dismantle the entire RPG industry. This new license intends to completely revoke the old OGL, a perpetual license designed to be irrevocable.
Nothing about this new license is “open”.
No matter the creator, it locks everyone into a new contract that restricts their work, makes it mandatory to report their projects and revenues to Wizards of the Coast, and gives WotC the legal right to reproduce and resell creators’ content without permission or compensation.
For the largest creators in the industry, WotC is imposing an impossible tax of 25%—based on their total sales, not profit. This is anti-competitive, monopolistic behavior designed to crush small businesses
Games such as Pathfinder 1E and 2E, 13th Age, Fudge, and Traveller—which use the 1.0 OGL as the backbone of their existence—will need to cease sales of upcoming products or give WotC 25% of their revenue to stay in compliance with the new license.
Virtual tabletops (VTTs) cannot operate.
Diversity in the industry will shrink away, as projects from marginalized creators are effectively written out of the future.
#OpenDnD is a rallying cry under which creators and fans have unified to demand that WotC revoke the draconian 1.1 OGL and pledge to support the existing 1.0 OGL into future editions of their games. This isn’t an opportunity to litigate and tinker with a new license, but to return to the values of open gaming. Our community deserves an open future if we want our favorite games to not only survive, but thrive!!
If you are a creator, #DontSign the new agreement. If you love roleplaying games, let WotC know we won't support them without an #OpenDnD!
WotC has shown that they are the dragon on top of the hoard, willing to burn the thriving village if only to get a few more gold pieces. It’s time for us to band together as adventurers to defend our village from the terrible wyrm.
Tell Wizards that you support #OpenDnD by signing your name below.

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States. Many Americans on the West Coast attributed declining wages and economic ills to Chinese workers. Although the Chinese composed only 0.002 percent of the nation's population, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act to placate worker demands and assuage concerns about maintaining white "racial purity."
The Opium Wars (1839-42, 1856-60) of the mid-nineteenth century between Great Britain and China left China heavily in debt. Additionally, floods and drought contributed to an exodus of peasants from their farms, and many left the country to find work. When gold was discovered in the Sacramento Valley of California in 1848, a large uptick in Chinese immigrants entered the United States to join the California Gold Rush. Following an 1852 crop failure in China, over 20,000 Chinese immigrants came through the custom house in San Francisco (up from 2,716 the previous year) looking for work. Violence soon broke out between white miners and the new arrivals, much of it racially charged. In May 1852, California imposed a Foreign Miners License Tax of $3 month meant to target Chinese miners, and crime and violence escalated. An 1854 Supreme Court case, People v. Hall, ruled that the Chinese, like Black Americans and Native Americans, were not allowed to testify in court, making it effectively impossible for Chinese immigrants to seek justice against the mounting violence. By 1870, Chinese miners had paid $5 million to the state of California via the Foreign Miners License Tax, yet they faced continuing discrimination at work and in their camps.
Meant to curb the influx of Chinese immigrants to the United States—particularly California—the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 suspended Chinese immigration for ten years and declared Chinese immigrant's ineligible for naturalization. President Chester A. Arthur signed it into law on May 6, 1882. Chinese-Americans already in the country challenged the constitutionality of the discriminatory acts, but their efforts failed.
Proposed by California congressman Thomas J. Geary, the Geary Act went into effect on May 5, 1892. It reinforced and extended the Chinese Exclusion Act’s ban on Chinese immigration for an additional ten years. It also required Chinese residents in the United States to carry special documentation—certificates of residence—from the Internal Revenue Service. Immigrants who were caught not carrying the certificates were sentenced to hard labor and deportation, and bail was only an option if the accused were vouched for by a “credible white witness.” China’s government protested these discriminatory laws, but with anti-immigrant sentiment at fever pitch in the United States, there was little they could do. Chinese Americans were finally allowed to testify in court after the 1882 trial of laborer Yee Shun, though it would take decades for the immigration ban to be lifted.
The Supreme Court upheld the Geary Act in Fong Yue Ting v. United States in 1893, and in 1902 Chinese immigration was made permanently illegal. The legislation proved very effective, and the Chinese population in the United States sharply declined. American experience with Chinese exclusion spurred later movements for immigration restriction against other "undesirable" groups such as Middle Easterners, Hindu and East Indians and the Japanese with the passage of the Immigration Act of 1924.
Chinese immigrants and their American-born families remained ineligible for citizenship until 1943 with the passage of the Magnuson Act. By then, the U.S. was embroiled in World War II and sought to improve relations with an important Asian ally.

SMSF Accountant Gold Coast: Your Guide to Self-Managed Super Funds
As retirement approaches, securing your financial future becomes a top priority. One of the increasingly popular options for Australians is the Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF). Managing an SMSF offers greater control and flexibility over your retirement savings, but it also comes with its own set of challenges and responsibilities. That’s where an SMSF accountant Gold Coast can be invaluable. In this blog, we’ll explore what an SMSF accountant does, the benefits of hiring one, and how to choose the right professional for your needs.
What is an SMSF?
A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a private superannuation fund that you manage yourself, as opposed to having your retirement savings managed by a superannuation fund provider. An SMSF can have up to six members, all of whom are typically trustees responsible for managing the fund in accordance with Australian superannuation laws and regulations.
Role of an SMSF Accountant
An SMSF accountant plays a crucial role in helping you manage your self-managed super fund efficiently and compliantly. Here are some key services they provide:
Setup and Structuring: An SMSF accountant helps set up your SMSF correctly, ensuring that it meets all legal requirements and is structured in a tax-efficient manner.
Compliance and Reporting: SMSFs are subject to strict regulatory requirements. An SMSF accountant ensures that your fund complies with all relevant laws, handles the necessary reporting to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), and prepares annual financial statements.
Taxation: Managing the tax aspects of an SMSF can be complex. An SMSF accountant provides advice on tax strategies, lodges tax returns, and ensures that your fund takes advantage of any available tax concessions.
Audit Coordination: SMSFs must be audited annually by an independent auditor. An SMSF accountant liaises with the auditor and prepares all required documentation to facilitate the audit process.
Investment Guidance: While they cannot provide specific financial advice, an SMSF accountant can help you understand the implications of your investment choices and ensure they align with your fund's investment strategy and risk profile.
Benefits of Hiring an SMSF Accountant on the Gold Coast
Local Expertise: A Gold Coast-based SMSF accountant has a deep understanding of the local market and regulations, providing tailored advice that suits your specific needs and circumstances.
Peace of Mind: Managing an SMSF involves significant administrative and compliance work. An accountant handles these responsibilities, giving you peace of mind and more time to focus on your investment strategy.
Cost-Effective: While there are costs involved in hiring an SMSF accountant, their expertise can help you avoid costly mistakes and potential penalties, making their services a worthwhile investment.
Personalized Service: A local SMSF accountant can offer personalized, face-to-face service, building a relationship based on trust and understanding of your unique financial goals.
How to Choose the Right SMSF Accountant on the Gold Coast
Qualifications and Experience: Ensure the accountant is qualified and has extensive experience in SMSF management. Look for memberships in professional bodies such as CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Reputation: Research reviews and testimonials from other clients. A reputable SMSF accountant will have positive feedback and a track record of satisfied customers.
Services Offered: Different accountants offer varying levels of service. Choose one whose services align with your needs, whether it's basic compliance or comprehensive management and advisory.
Communication: Effective communication is key to a successful partnership. Choose an accountant who is responsive and able to explain complex matters in simple terms.
Fees: Understand the fee structure and ensure it is transparent. Compare costs with the services provided to ensure you are getting value for your money.

A well-prepared meeting can save time, reduce stress, and ensure you get the most out of your bookkeeper's expertise. At Masttocs Bookkeeping Services, we understand the importance of these meetings and want to help you make the most of them. Here’s a guide on how to prepare for a meeting with your bookkeeper in Gold Coast, ensuring a productive and efficient session.
1. Organise Your Financial Documents
Before your meeting, gather all necessary financial documents. This includes bank statements, receipts, invoices, payroll records, and any other financial documentation relevant to your business. Having these documents organised and readily available allows your bookkeeper to review your financial situation and provide accurate advice quickly.
2. Review Your Financial Statements
Take some time to review your financial statements before the meeting. This includes your balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement. Understanding these documents will help you have a more informed discussion with your bookkeeper and make it easier to ask relevant questions about your business’s financial health.
3. List Your Questions and Concerns
Prepare a list of questions and concerns you have about your business’s finances. Whether you need clarification on specific transactions, advice on tax strategies, or insights into cash flow management, having a list ensures you cover all your points during the meeting. This preparation helps make the meeting more structured and ensures you don’t forget any important issues.
4. Set Clear Goals for the Meeting
Identify the goals you want to achieve during your meeting with your bookkeeper. Are you looking to streamline your bookkeeping processes, improve your cash flow management, or plan for upcoming tax obligations? Setting clear goals helps focus the meeting and ensures both you and your bookkeeper are on the same page.
5. Bring Your Accounting Software
If you use accounting software, ensure you bring your laptop or have access to your online accounting platform during the meeting. This allows your bookkeeper to review your accounts in real-time and make necessary adjustments or recommendations on the spot. At Masttocs Bookkeeping Services, we are proficient in various accounting software and can help you maximise their functionalities for your business.
6. Be Ready to Discuss Business Changes
Inform your bookkeeper of any recent changes in your business. This could include new hires, changes in business operations, significant purchases, or shifts in your business model. These changes can impact your financial statements and tax obligations, so it’s essential your bookkeeper is aware of them to provide accurate advice.
7. Understand the Basics
While your bookkeeper is there to handle the complexities of your finances, having a basic understanding of bookkeeping principles can be beneficial. Familiarise yourself with basic terms and concepts, such as assets, liabilities, revenue, expenses, and equity. This knowledge will help you follow the discussion more easily and make informed decisions about your business’s finances.
8. Plan for Future Meetings
Discuss the frequency and structure of future meetings with your bookkeeper. Regular check-ins help keep your finances in order and address any issues promptly. Setting a schedule for future meetings ensures ongoing support and financial oversight, helping your business stay on track.
Conclusion
Preparing for a meeting with your bookkeeper is a crucial step in managing your business’s finances effectively.
