A perfect reflection.
There was no wind and so no ripple in the water of the saltpan which was the perfect setting for this godwit.
I think it is a Black-tailed Godwit, because of the length and colour of the the bill, but it could also be a Bar-tailed Godwit. I find those two always confusing.

This week in the Maniculum Bestiaryposting Challenge, we learn about the Nadokwak.
These are very serious and dutiful birds - they "organise" their journeys, flying in "military formation" and picking up ballast in the form of sand and small stones. At night, they keep a careful watch in shift, and being blessed with "tireless energy", they respond to being woken for their shift "not refusing, as we do, gracelessly, because we want to go on sleeping; instead, rousing itself readily from its resting-place, it takes its turn and repays the service it has received with equal attention to duty."
Other notable traits include that "they divide the watches at night and take them in turns, according to a roster, holding small stones in their claws to ward off sleep. They give a cry [a low, muttering sound] when there is cause for alarm. Their colouring shows their age, for as they grow older, it grows darker."
To fulfill all these criteria at once, I sort of mashed up two birds: The Southern Cassowary, which is a more shy bird, but ready to defend itself by kicking with a special pointy claw. They also have the lowest-frequency bird call known so far, and long necks to keep watch properly. In the depiction of the Nadokwaks, the coloring of the necks, the shape of the legs and the casques on their heads are based on cassowaries.
However, they are neither migratory or very social birds, as the description suggests. To cover this aspect, I chose the Bar-tailed Godwit, a small migratory wading bird. They also show a distinct change from their non-breeding to their breeding plumage over a period of several years, which matches the description of their colouring changing over time. In the drawing, the beaks and the coloring of the bodies are based on Godwits. According to the Wikipedia article, "the English term "godwit" was first recorded in about 1416–17 and may be an imitation of the bird's call, or be derived from the Old English "god whit", meaning "good creature" [...]", which corresponds to the appreciation the bestiary author clearly holds for this bird.
I decided to depict the Nadokwaks during their watch, perhaps looking for little stones to hold later on.

Original Godwit sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d'Ache to create the look I'm after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing. This process often referred to as Giclée printing uses the highest standard of printing methods to give gallery quality results that maintain all the details of the original sketch. The graphite pencils I use are Faber-Castel, the oil pastels are Sennelier and the china-graph is Caran d’Ache. The inks are pigment based archive quality (100years+). The heavyweight specialist papers I use are of the best professional quality having a wonderful surface designed specifically for fine art drawings and illustrations. Very limited editions with only ten per size printed. All artwork is signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. The A5 are 5.8" x 8.25" (14.8cm x 21cm) The A4 are 8.25" x 11.7" (21cm x 29.8cm) The A3 are 11.7" x 16.5" (29.8 cm x 42cm) The A2 are 16.5" x 23.4" (42 cm x 59.4cm) Originals are A3 11.7" x 16.5" (29.8 cm x 42cm) Frames not included in price. Black-tailed godwit, looking a bit angry. Maybe because he/she was the only godwit in that salt pan in the South of Portugal. A few days later I encountered lots of godwits further North close to Lisboa. As that was back in February I guess they were gathering to migrate to Northern Europe.
