Weyes Blood | God Turn Me Into A Flower
It always takes me Such a curse to be so hard You shatter easily and can't pick up all those shards It's the curse of losing yourself When the mirror takes you too far Oh, God, turn me into a flower

Song Review: Weyes Blood - “God Turn Me into a Flower” (“Colbert”)
Weyes Blood has guts.
The singer went on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and performed one of her least-accessible numbers in the form of “God Turn Me into a Flower.”
This is ambient music with vocals. There’s no discernible melody - just atmospheric synths, sound effects and Blood singing both lyrics and wordless passages.
It’s also a stunningly gorgeous piece of music that carries a contemplative, existential message - something fans of the artist born Natalie Mering have come to expect.
Still, it’s esoteric - a track that took several listens to reveal itself when it appeared on 2022’s And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow.
So to perform it as an introduction to a national television audience?
Ballsy.

Song Review: Weyes Blood - “God Turn Me into a Flower”
Part prayer, part ruminating meditation, “God Turn Me in to a Flower” finds Weyes Blood singing wordlessly over the back half of the sweeping, six-plus minute ballad as birdsong and other sound effects flutter behind her.
The final single from And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow has three verses, no chorus and builds slowly from sustained, single notes on a keyboard to the lengthy fade described above as Blood sings:
You see the reflection/and you want it more than the truth/you yearn to be the dream you never could get to/’cause the person on the other side has always just been you/oh, god, turn me into a flower
It’s initially a puzzling track, yet “God Turn Me in to a Flower” burrows into the listener’s heart and psyche on repeated listens and reveals itself a worthy followup to It’s Not Just Me, It’s Everybody” and “Grapevine.”
And in the Darkness, Hearts Aglow arrives Nov. 18.
