Go'o Shrine Naoshima
Wood, glass, marble, rock, sky, sea, dark vs light, sacred, historic.
Design: Higashi Sugimoto
Hiroshi Sugimoto designed this building to coincide with the restoration of Go'o Shrine, which dates to the Edo Period. A flight of glass stairs links an underground stone chamber with the main hall, connecting the subterranean and the surface to form a single world. The main hall and worship hall are based on the style of early shrine architecture, such as that of Ise Shrine, as well as the artist's own aesthetic sensibility.

NAOSHIMA Island, Japan.
Today was a huge highlight!
Part 1. 16/06/24
We took our group photo with Yayoi Kusama’s famous yellow pumpkin and set off into the sun. I explored the Art House Project with Angelo and Stav, visiting Kadoya, Minamidera, Go'o Shrine, Ishibashi, Gokaisho, and Haisha. My favorites were Ishibashi House, Go'o Shrine, and Minamidera. The Minamidera building, designed by Tadao Ando for James Turrell’s works, was particularly interesting. I enjoy immersive art spaces and, as an artist, I’m experimenting with space myself. This work was simple, smart, and beautifully executed, preserving the idea of temples as emotional support for people.
