You can keep your ghostly little girls, your blood on the windows, your random vampire attacks. For me, the spookiest mystery of Halloween is why my car keeps getting vapour lock.
Down the street, the real mechanics tell me that it's because the weather is getting colder. The fuel inside the carb gets denser and it doesn't burn as well. I think that's some top-shelf bullshit, mostly because I know for a fact that at least two of the dudes down at Harry's Auto Repair are actually werewolves. Think about it: Harry's. It's right in the name. Next time I go in there to borrow their tools without paying, I should bring along a dog biscuit.
Car chasing canine mechanics aside, they do have a point. The weather has been getting worse lately, and cars do run a lot worse when that happens. Originally, my distant Quebecois ancestors would have chalked this up to malevolent spirits, angered by a too-greedy harvest of the fields. They'd have left a couple stalks of corn behind, to keep the spirits happy. You know, make sure that the old family tractor keeps starting every morning just in case Meemaw needed to take Peepaw to the hospital to get his stomach pumped again (corn liquor problems.) What I needed was a sacrifice.
Back in the 70s, when this car was made, it was a lot easier to find sacrifices. People went missing all the time, and nobody went looking for them. Nowadays, if you kidnap a person from the side of the highway, you have to make sure all their tracking devices are removed. Smartphones. Smartwatches. Smart rings. Smart buttplugs. The other day, I heard about some guy that has an internet-connected tooth. Yeah. His molar can get an IP address. All of these things are constantly reporting your location to a series of shadowy information brokers. And they call me a monster.
To avoid all this hassle, I simply decided to do what I always do: sacrifice some tires. A big burnout in front of the 4-H Club would surely appease any malevolent nature spirits, and help me keep my car in tip-top condition all winter. Plus, their office is right next to the tire shop that keeps throwing perfectly good tires in the dumpster behind their store. If one set of rears turned into smoke didn't do it, I could keep burning down more dead, oddly-round dinosaurs until the cops came home.
Through my efforts, I wasn't attacked by cops, or even vampires. What happened was that some stray ember from my bare rims striking the pavement set the adjacent corn field on fire, and I had to get out of there in a hurry, leaving my work undone. Those farmers are gonna be pissed when those spooky little girls start crawling out of their TVs.

Tap, Untap. Concede?
Well, people voted on this one, so time to talk about this one! Years and years back, when I first assembled it, it was much more about stealing stuff and abusing the peculiar wording on Merieke's abilities allowing for a few shenanigans. Some of that remain to this day, Nightmare Shepherd, Faerie Artisans, Darksteel Plate...
it pivoted over the years onto much more of a generic focus on tap abilities and untap effects. Given the propensity of untap effects to go infinite, I kept discovering more ways to go infinite in the deck, so instead of fighting it, I went along with it. This deck will combo off if left unchecked for too long, that's a fact of life and the main wincon of the deck though stealing threats with Merieke is still here as a backup.
This is a deck I pull out relatively rarely among my pool, because more relaxed pods don't always want the pressure of playing against a combo deck, certainly not one with a commander that can steal things. But I enjoy playing it immensely, as it has a lot of interesting lines of play.
There's not one given combo for the deck, you're mostly assembling things on the fly. The basis of it is basically to generate a multiplicative untap source, something that can untap more permanents that it takes to generate the effect. As such, the main combo enablers for the deck will be Pemmin's Aura, Freed from the Real and Illusionist's Bracers. Some of them require another untapper, or a permanent that taps for two or more colored mana, or something else. Halo Fountain can also serve as the multiplying untap source in the right circumstances. Another way to combo is to use Unctus, which is a simple two card combo with Aphetto alchemist or three cards with any two untappers, allowing you to loot through your entire deck if necessary to find another combo. And of course, Staff of Domination can get out of hand, along with Lithoform Engine with some untap effects.
As far as actually winning the game, generating infinite untaps generally means you get access to infinite mana, and with any of the many, many tapping effects in this deck, also infinite of something else you can parley into a win. Halo Fountain can do the job of actually winning the game once everything is set up. Fain the Broker can generate an infinitely big army of infinitely big flying creatures that you can haste up with boots or a drawbridge. Merieke and Beguiler of Wills can steal your opponents' entire board. Shorikai will draw through your deck while making 40 1/1s that shaile can pump up infinitely. Wizard's Spellbook will copy all the spells in all the graveyards,...
Before you combo, of course, you also play cards with tap effects, creatures and artifacts, to get some value and play a "fair" gameplan. Be they upsides on mana rocks or just fun cards. In that area (and in others, as Norritt can attest, just not as much), the picks are very much cards that look fun and are on theme with their tapping effect more than "optimized" choices for everything. Shaile and Embrose are a pet card of mine, Oracle en-Vec is just fun to play with, and the Deck of Many Things is certainly not the best card ever printed.
The manabase is dated but I've barely touched it up over the years, there are certainly optimizations to make.
Something that's very convenient is the tendency for recent untappers to be able to target any permanent, which includes lands. This makes them double up as value engine and ramp in this deck, and is particularly potent with lands or rocks that tap for more than one mana, which in this deck also happen to be combo pieces. Lotus Field, bouncelands, Empowered Auto-Generator. This deck can get up to high amounts of mana, and doesn't always have enough fuel to spend it on. Probably means it should go a bit heavier on card draw, but slots are slots.
Anyway, this is one of my favorite decks to pilot as mentioned earlier, I just make sure that any opponents facing it know what they're dealing with and to try and stop me.

If you could have written liara from the beginning how would you have rewritten her?
I'd keep her as her scientist/archeologist role and the awkward/nerdy persona she has along with it. I'd add in the ability to refuse the melds since the game presents it as a choice and ends up forcing you to do it anyway. if you rescue her last in 1 like I always do, make that have an impact in later games with how she sees/treats you. arguably I can "defend" some of her stalkerish, obsessive weirdo actions by saving her last.
in 2, she doesn't steal your corpse or is involved in any way with giving it to cerberus. make that a cerberus only plot the way I thought it was before I played the dlc and talked to her. I'd also remove the info broker plot she has going on, since that didn't make much sense to me how she went from damsel in distress nerdy scientist to cold hearted badass broker. someone else can take the role of giving you information on thane and samara--hell, a dream of mine was to side with vasir in some way, so maybe she can be that information provider for you and change LOTSB to be a mission with her instead. essentially, I would give liara a role in the game as small as they gave Kaidan and Ashley so they can now be "equal" instead of the bullshit we got in canon.
in 3, give her less of a required role. remove scenes where she is required at all possible (does she really need to be on eden prime? does she really need to be on thessia with the way she acts on that damn mission?) and keep her as a prothean expert who is studying other beacons and artifacts, which can keep her on mars. but on mars, make that james's intro mission. instead of sending him back.
I'd also add in a way for the "relationship" to not always be positive between her and shepard, which is another major criticism I have of her (and garrus, I kill him off so he isn't my forced bestie). what this would look like exactly, I'm not sure, but it's sorely needed.
overall, I'd just give her less plot importance. find ways for her to not always be enamored with shepard and have my shepard not become auto besties with her. keep her as she was in one, as a researcher and mostly non-combatant. that kind of thing. I wouldn't necessarily add in a way to kill her off since I do "appreciate" how games do need some characters to be alive for plot reasons, but it is. tempting.

okay adhd story time. i just fucking went to the auto insurance broker because it turns out that when I got new plates on my car months ago, I only changed out the back one?? and just?? FORGOT that there were two plates on the car that needed changing. so I realized last night that my front plate was different than my back plate and spent a good hour looking through all my insurance documents and house to see where the hell I could've left the second plate if it wasn't on my car???
i gave up. resigned myself to paying the fee to just get new plates. got to the broker today, brought in the remaining plate, and told them that i lost one of the set. absolutely did not try to explain how or why because it would make me sound absolutely bonkers. we're sitting there chatting as the supervisor comes over to help out, etc etc, it's taking a bit longer than I thought so I start fiddling (adhd) with the plate sitting on the counter in front of me. do a double take. dawning horror sets in as I look, very closely, at the thin outline of a ridge around the outside of the plate that's been on my car the last few months. stuck my thumbnail into the ridge and pried it open, popping out the second plate i was reporting lost onto the counter in front of us.
apparently, when I was replacing the plates the last time, I'd just screwed both plates stuck together onto the car. since there was no second plate in front of me to do anything with, my brain marked the task done and moved on. the people at the insurance desk were very nice about it, if obviously confused, as they cancelled the whole transaction. i apologized profusely and put both plates back on the car and now i need to go lie down for a while.
#i need to add that i only realized that the plates didnt match because a passing police officer noticed it when my car was parked#out in front of my house#i came out and was like huh whoops. well shit. and gave her the old expired plate#apparently. protocol is to open up a case file when that happens so you can refer to it when you replace the 'lost' plate#which i mention only because i now need to also call the fucking police and explain this whole situation#no i did not apparently lose a plate i just. forgot. so many important things that it cascaded into a situation that i didnt even#want to /try/ and explain#im done

Movies I watched this Week # 147 (Year 3/Week 43):
Loro ("Them"), my 7th decadent film by Paolo Sorrentino, the breakneck, modern-day Fellini. An epic, outrageous, over-the-top look into the outlandish life of charismatic billionaire king Silvio Berlusconi. MTV-style music video of power, sex, ultimate corruption and unlimited money. A sprawling saga of a modern day Citizen Kane, promiscuous, charming and greedy. As well as a young pimp who runs an escort service, and supplies him with a harem of girls.
I love noticing chronological symmetry in movies, for example, at the exact middle of the movie (starting at 1:11), there’s this central, electrifying scene of a telephone sales pitch, even better than DiCaprio selling 40,000 penny stock shares at 'The wolf of Wall Street'. Between serving as a prime minister and serving time, Tony Servillo's Berlusconi, the greatest salesman in Italy, is in a funk, and he needs to find his groove again. So late at night he opens a telephone book at random and calls some old lady from a listing, and in 6 minutes, he sells her an overpriced apartment that have not even been built yet. I wish I could find an isolated clip of that scene somewhere. Bellissimo!
And just today, I read about the real Berlusconi’s need to accumulate, his vast, 25,000 item art collection!
🍿
"Fugayzi, fugazi. It's a whazy. It's a woozie. It's fairy dust..."
So - because of the scene above - I had to stop everything I do, and indulge, one more time with Scorsese's The wolf of Wall Street. A similarly decadent, excessive, cocaine-fueled roller coaster ride of money and addiction. With judge Fran Lebowitz, Spike Jonze as Dwayne, the broker above, and of course Palm Spring's Cristin Milioti as the first wife.
So far I’ve seen only about half of Scorsese’s 42 full features, so after ‘Flower moon’ I’m going to deep dive, and watch all the ones I’ve missed.
🍿
Another film I’ve been re-watching over and over, Paweł Pawlikowski's heartbreaking romance Cold War. When I saw it the first time, I thought it was very complex (maybe I was stoned), but it's actually extremely simple, accessible and direct. Joanna Kulig's ethereal beauty and the powerful life force of her character 'Zula' are unforgettable. 10/10.
[Waiting for his next film, The island, with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara.]
🍿
John le Carré X 3:
🍿 Errol Morris's most recent documentary, The Pigeon Tunnel, a lengthy conversation with the fascinating writer le Carré. Based on his auto-biography of the same name. It's mostly about deceit and betrayals, as well as his tortured relationship with his larger-than-life conman father, "Ronnie". Lots of elaborate re-enactments, staged and fanciful. My best friend Danny (RIP) used to be an avid le Carré reader and fan.
🍿 First watch: The masterful The spy who came in from the cold. The first classic film adaptation and based on his spectacularly successful debut novel. Double and triple crossing in the dark days of the cold War. It was supposed to be the Anti-James Bond, and established a prolific genre of 'Flawed Spies', "a bunch of seedy squalid bastards like me, little men, drunkards, queers, henpecked husbands, civil servants playing 'Cowboys and Indians' to brighten their rotten little lives." Magnificent Richard Burton play.
[I also have to dig in and do a Martin Ritt marathon one day!]
🍿 Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy (the 2011 film, not the Alec Guinness TV series): A slow, melancholic and perfectly atmospheric thriller, with an all-star cast (Including a cameo of le Carré himself! Photo Above). Gary Oldman's vacant gaze got me to want watching his complete filmography. Also, it's funny how many movies open or end with Charles Trenet's La Mer!
Superb! 9/10.
🍿
2 horror films from British director Steve McQueen:
🍿 While waiting for his latest ‘Occupied City’, I caught his horrifying directorial debut Hunger from 2008. A re-telling of the 1981 Irish Hunger Strike, where 10 IRA volunteers starved themselves to death, as a protest against the British government. It is told from inside the prison cells. Very few films were able to transfer the horror and hopelessness of being abused by ruthless authorities like this one.
And in the middle of this gruesome narrative, there's an astounding scene, unbroken and shot with a static camera on Bobby Sands and a priest who came to see him, talking that lasts for 17 minutes. Simply amazing.
Best and most chilling film experience of the week.
Like Norm McDonald used to say (about Hitler): 'The more I learn about Margaret Thatcher, the more I don't care for her'.
🍿 Western Deep, a 2002 short, an near-abstract poem about the workers / slaves who work at the world's deepest gold mine in South Africa. Dark, jarring and claustrophobic. 1/10.
[Now that I've seen McQueen's 4 features, I have to move on to his 'Small Axe' television anthology.]
🍿
My first 2 films by Romanian Cristian Mungiu:
🍿 His latest contemplative drama R.M.N. is set in a backwater multi-ethnic village in Transylvania, where long-simmering tensions erupt over questions of national identity, globalization, prejudices and xenophobia. It opens with pig slaughtering, and ends with an old man who hangs himself in the forest. It's harsh, and coarse, and repressive. But it's told in a sublime style. And in the middle of all the ugliness and misogyny, a woman practices her cello by playing Yumeji's haunting theme from 'In the mood for love'. 9/10.
🍿 So I finally also saw his highly-acclaimed 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days from 2007, considered as 'one of the greatest films of the 21 century'. But the depressing story of a desperate young woman who's trying to obtain an illegal abortion in the last dark days of communist Romania, was as pleasant as a visit to Nicolae Ceaușescu's dungeon: Dingy, stressfully-ugly and miserable.
🍿
“…Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?…”
Airplane!, another re-watch of this classic evergreen - the No. 1 modern American comedy on most lists? With cameos by Ethel Merman, young Mike Ehrmantraut and James Howe, one of the most prolific character actors of all time, as a Japanese general committing Harakiri. Isn't it strange that the guy who played Ted Striker never had a career in Hollywood after that?
Maybe it's time for Edgar Wright to re-make 'Airplane 2024!'?
🍿
5 more by female directors:
🍿 Elaine May's Mikey and Nicky, a dark dialogue-rich, two-person crime drama about old friendship and betrayal over one long night in Philadelphia. John Cassavetes is a small-time hood with a contract out on his life. And Peter Falk is his lifelong friend who may or may not be trying to help him escape his fate. A nuanced portrayal of fragile masculinity.
🍿 The royal hotel, my second film by Australian Kitty Green, and also starring Julia Garner, playing another powerless young woman suffering male abuse and exploitation (after 'The Assistant'). Two young backpackers take a job at an outback bar, in "the middle of nowhere". A scary, ominous thriller with escalating threats and an uncomfortable sense of mortal danger. Too unpleasant for me - 4/10.
🍿 Bus Girl is the first film directed by Jessica Henwick, who plays the 2nd girl in 'The Royal Hotel'. A cute little culinary fantasy, shot entirely on a cell phone. 6/10.
🍿 Aurora’s Sunrise, my second Armenian film (after ‘The colour of pomegranates’). An adult animated feature about the Albanian genocide, through the eyes of a real life young woman, who survived the hellish years, and escaped to America, where she became celebrated Hollywood star in 1919, when she played herself in 'Carnival of souls'.
Ethnic cleansing, mass murder, exterminations, cruelty and hatred ... Armenians, Jews, Palestinians, Uygurs, American Indians, Tutsis... It's always the same fucking thing!
(Via).
🍿 Affairs of the Art, a British-Canadian craziness by Joanna Quinn, nominated in 2021 for best animated short. Spectacular and surrealistic visuals about a 59-year-old lady, a zany artist at heart, and her fully-eclectic family. Very Roald Dahl. 9/10.
🍿
On the fringe, a recent Spanish social drama with Penélope Cruz. Stressful and depressive story about folks that are being evicted from their homes. Focus on grey, marginalized and helpless people, ground up by bureaucracy, nickel and dimed by poverty, lack of time and resources is a tough watch. Especially when the story is not wrapped up with optimism or a happy end. 6/10.
🍿
“I’m glad we had this conversation…”
Viking, an alternative, "indie" science fiction allegory, scientifically naive, and featuring low-low tech and drama. An odd, simulated Canadian proximation. In spite of mirroring some scenes from '2001' and 'The Shining', it's not close to either one. Meh. 2/10.
🍿
"Kill the wabbit!"
Chuck Jones's What's Opera, Doc?, considered to be the greatest animated short film of all time. A 7 minutes riff on Wagner's Nibelung and Disney's Fantasia, and the first cartoon short to be selected for preservation for the National Film Registry. With Mel Blanc and Elmer Fudd.
🍿
... No fellow could ignore / The little girl next door / She sure looked sweet in her first evening gown / Now there's a charge for what she used to give for free ...
"Today, I learned" that satirist & mathematician Tom Lehrer is still alive, at ninety five! He was extremely popular in the 60's and basically retired in 1972. Also, that [like Jonas Salk] he transferred all the songs he ever recorded to the public domain - "For the greater good!"
In 1967, he recorded his excellent Copenhagen concert for posterity. Delightful!
2 extras: I got it from Agnes (which is about the spread of VD), and Bergman's actor Lars Ekborg’s singing I Tom Lehrers vackra värld in Swedish.
🍿
The Insurrectionist next door, my first documentary by Alexandra Pelosi, Nancy's daughter. She was trying to humanize about a dozen individuals who participate in the January 6 attack, by befriending them and their their families, and by allowing all of them to explain that they were "just at the wrong place at the wrong time". In the end, it was just sad to see the poor children who had to cry goodbye when their father went to jail.
🍿

lillian cousland study --- ellie williams.
ellie's revenge journey is a BIG BIG inspiration for how i write lily. she becomes obsessed with it to the point it brings her PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION. she is black and blue, bruised all over, but she keeps going, killing ANYONE in her path. she starts disassociating which allows her to kill people more easily, maybe even killing people she didn't MEAN to kill because she was just in AUTO PILOT. pure reflex. that's lily.
she doesn't just want to kill howe, she wants to hunt down every single soldier that was involved in the assault in castle cousland. she'll pay information brokers and spies to give her the names after the blight is over with and she'll kill those too.
ellie at one point says 'i don't sleep. i don't eat.' until she's done with this revenge thing, lily will pay attention to almost NOTHING ELSE short of her brother and/or any other siblings and/or MAYBE a love interest.

9 Tips with Top Advice to Lower Your Insurance Costs
Let's face it: insurance is becoming more and more expensive for many of us. Even if you don't file claims or make changes to your policy, insurance prices have a non favourable history of slowly rising each year, quickly making premiums the most considerable expense in your budget. What can you, therefore, do about it on saving Money on Insurance? We have conducted our research on opinions of top insurance professionals and agents about the most effective techniques to lower insurance prices. Here are top nine recommendations derived from our learnings.
Top 9 Tips for Lowering Insurance Costs
1. Don't depend just on one insurance
Keep your policy from automatically renewing when it expires; look at what alternative insurance providers offer. The truth is, insurance premiums vary regularly. To locate the greatest offer for you, you'll have a decent chance to shop. In addition, sticking with one insurance provider seldom pays off. Spending quality time looking into other insurance providers might result in significant cost savings.
2. Obtain several options from your insurance broker for saving money on insurance
When comparing insurance quotes, refrain from accepting the first one you find. The truth is that insurance costs vary significantly among insurers, so you can receive a quote from one that is substantially less expensive than those from the others. What is also important is that you have a good communication with your insurance broker to understand which policy, combination of policies or packages best suit your requirements. Friendly and personalized service providers such as Cléma Risk Solutions. This way, you are in a position to invest in an insurance coverage that gives you the best value for money.
3. Utilize offers to bargain for a lesser price for saving money on insurance
What if, though, you prefer your insurance provider? Does the cost of the service you want to use go up? Sometimes. You should still shop for a better bargain even if you favour your insurance provider over all others. Then, when you locate one, use it to bargain with your present insurer for a lower price. One CEO advises consumers not to be afraid to take advantage of deals from other businesses. "Tell them the rate you're paying with company A if you know you can obtain your vehicle insurance from company A for $70 per month, but you prefer the coverage of company B. Insurance Brokers are frequently allowed to provide minimal reductions, and they'll be more likely to do so if they fear losing you to a competing firm.
4. Stack them up in bundles for saving money on insurance
You could be paying more than you would if you had a boat, house, and auto insurance with the same carrier if you had them all with different providers. Bundling your home, vehicle, and other personal insurance coverages is one of the finest premium reduction techniques available. When you combine your coverages with the same insurance provider, you may be even eligible for discounts on each policy.
5. Achievable deductibles should be chosen
Deductibles may be a complicated topic. If you have a low deductible, you'll pay less when an accident occurs, but there's a catch: because the insurer will pay more, your rates will go up. Increasing your deductible, ideally to equal the amount of your emergency fund, is one fast way to reduce the cost of insurance. It is recommended that customers select as large of a deductible as they can comfortably afford at any given time. Increasing your deductible can assist lower your premium substantially and lessen the need to claim for minor damage, ensuring that your rates remain low going forward. Insurance Group advises, changing your deductible periodically during the year is an additional choice. According to the risk considerations, adjust your deductibles on a seasonal basis. In periods of decreased risk, enquire with the insurance agent about raising your deductibles. Increase your wind and hail deductible, for instance, if it's not a risky season when you do it. You'll save money by doing this without taking an unnecessary risk.
6. Eliminate unnecessary coverage for saving money on insurance
An insurance plan with all the bells and whistles is only sometimes necessary. For instance, if you drive a vehicle that is decades old, you generally don't need to pay more for collision and comprehensive coverage because these plans are more expensive than the worth of the vehicle. Many consumers don't examine their automotive coverage levels. Frequently, cars with full coverage even though they have drastically depreciated since the insurance was purchased. If your vehicle has lost a sizable value, think about lowering or canceling collision insurance.
7. Boost your credit rating
Most insurance firms employ a credit-based insurance score to determine insurance prices. This implies you can pay extra for insurance if your credit score is poor. On the other hand, a credit score in excellent standing can assist vehicle rates to remain low. Pay your invoices on time and often review your credit history for suspicious behavior.
8. Check for new discounts for saving money on insurance
Considerable savings are available from insurance providers, including those for anti-lock brakes, alum affiliations, and signing up a few days before your coverage begins. Other reductions comprise:
Defensive driving course completion.
Accident-free or safe driver.
Low mileage.
Good-student.
Employee discounts.
Academic or professional organization affiliation.
Military or federal employee.
Multi-car.
Paid-in-full.
Electronic billing.
How do you determine the discounts you are eligible for? Your insurance agent most likely, may call you up to advise you of all the eligible savings. However, inquire with your agency as to whether you are receiving all applicants. Then, remember to pay attention to innovative technology. If the agent notice an issue, they can prevent it from becoming a significant insurance claim.
9. Using a home office? Inform your insurer
Finally, you may qualify for a significant vehicle insurance reduction if your employment is distant. If you work from home, make sure to inform your agent. Your premium should fall because you are driving less.
To sum it up
Your insurance premium is not fixed. While certain factors, including your age and where you reside, may not be able to change, other factors can help you lower your insurance rates. For example, call an independent insurance agent if you're having trouble reducing your speed. They may shop around for insurance providers on your behalf, locate the finest offers, and even assist you in finding eligible discounts.

Ready For Prime Time
We see it everywhere. Apple Pay. Google Pay. Paypal. Pay with Klarna. Everyone wants a piece of the action, even if it is only a small sliver. With total retail sales at $6.5 trillion, there’s plenty of money to be made at the margin, even if the margin is small.
But now Amazon is extending its reach. Buy With Prime launches at the end of the month, and allows partner retailers to leverage every aspect of Amazon’s might, from order fulfillment to payment processing and returns. Of course, Amazon assesses several payments along the way, from storage to packing and shipping, not to mention credit card processing. Customers get all the same benefits they get when using their Prime account at Amazon. And partner companies can still offer their own order fulfillment and processing if customers opt out of the Prime feature.
In some regards, it’s like being in bed with the enemy. But as they say (whoever “they” is), if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.
Amazon put Buy With Prime into test market last Spring among its existing Fulfilled By Amazon (FBA) clients. It works rather seamlessly: partner retailers simply add a BWP logo and button, all copy and paste just like PayPal code. Oh, and ship some inventory to the nearest Amazon warehouse.
Partnering with Amazon relieves the small company from having to handle time-consuming (and expensive) order fulfillment responsibilities, storage, as well as shipping, for which Amazon has already brokered huge discounts. Basically, you can “off-shore” multiple layers of your business, expand your reach, and quite possibly enjoy higher sales and profits.
From Amazon’s perspective, this is not all that different from food manufacturers selling off unused capacity by contracting to make private label goods. Amazon is doing the same, albeit in warehousing, packing, and shipping.
There was once a time when Amazon was demonized for being too successful. After all, shopping online necessarily displaces smaller business along the way. But that’s like complaining 110 years ago that auto manufacturers were putting bicycle retailers and farriers out of business. They had to adapt, or go out of business. Today’s small businesses have similarly been forced to evolve or die.
Or partner with Amazon. And to be fair, Amazon will probably take some heat for reaching its tentacles into more of the retail pie.
But Amazon has also reached a plateau, and has begun laying off 18,000 workers. Anything it can do to help put the company in better balance is a good thing, and BWP may very well play a big role.
All things considered, this is a good move for small retailers as well as Amazon. While smaller companies must have an e-commerce presence, managing the back end of that can be a major distraction from storefront operations. Letting the expert—in this case, Amazon—do that is genius for both parties.
And I as a customer find this particularly appealing, because I’ve been clicking those Amazon Buy Now buttons more times than I wish to admit.

The browser situation right now is pretty damn dire, because Chrome and Edge in that chart are functionally the same browser with a different wrapper and semi-mandatory Big Tech account linkage. Safari and Firefox are Chrome’s only competition. Vivaldi? That’s Chrome. Brave? Also Chrome. Realistically, if it’s a browser with a name that isn’t Safari or Firefox, it’s Chrome.
Google is, arguably, an even worse company to have a near-stranglehold on the web than Microsoft. Microsoft didn’t really understand the internet or the web back when it was building its Internet Explorer empire, it just knew it was important somehow and had to beat Netscape at any cost in order to “own” it. Once IE got big enough, they simply declared victory and spent then next 5 years failing to deliver what eventually became Windows Vista. Literally the only reason IE 7, 8, and 9 exist is because of Firefox basically bringing Netscape back from the grave in a nicer package.
Google, on the other hand, very much understands the internet and the web, or at least why it’s essential to control the near-universal means of accessing it. Remember, Google is no longer a search company. They’re an advertising broker. They’ve built their empire on the shifting sands of people’s willingness to be stalked everywhere they go, and they will do anything to ensure that they get to maintain that empire for as long as possible, regardless of public opinion.
If you’ve recently had Chrome tell you that it will now helpfully be categorizing all of your browsing history into a collection of Topics that it will then share with the websites you visit, it’s because other companies like Apple and privacy-advocating organizations like Mozilla have put Google’s ownership of you as a targetable individual in enormous jeopardy by turning people against tracking cookies (the EU is also trying, bless them, but ad companies are way better at creating dark patterns than the EU is at writing or enforcing legislation to stop them) and taking their own proactive steps to throw a monkey wrench in Google’s core business model. And again, their core business model is selling their compiled conception of you as a person to advertisers who themselves want to sell things to absolutely psychotically-granular segments of the population. Want to target people in southeast Cincinnati who have searched for or visited websites related to a degree in a specific college-level field in the past 3 weeks? My friend, they’ve got you covered.
Anyway, Safari has been blocking 3rd party cookies since 2020, and nothing broke. Firefox has been doing it even longer with no ill effects for its users. Firefox is soon going to be rolling out total cookie isolation, so it will be impossible for a single cookie, even one that’s generated by a 1st party, to follow you from site to site, because your cookies will now live in their own domain-specific bin that’s determined by the page you’re visiting, not the embedded ad frame that just loaded its fourth auto-playing video ad in 45 seconds.
With chromium having nearly 90% global market share across both desktop and mobile devices, Google has enormous power to just decide how things will work, and everyone else just sort of has to agree or things will break for people who use other browsers. Unlike Microsoft, who truly did work unilaterally to wreck the web to their own advantage and then have the gall to say their product was “better”, Google also has the fig leaf of the W3C, which it and other browser makers sit on. The W3C essentially sets the rules for interoperability on the web. Their specifications dictate how browsers should behave and what features are formal standards. But the W3C is also awfully receptive to Google’s ideas for what new standards should be and how they should work, which coincidentally also tend to be things that benefit Google in some way or cement experimental features that were first built into Chrome without a standard behind them. They’re not (yet) just a rubber stamp for whatever Google wants to do, but the W3C is hardly an independent bulwark against monopolistic behavior by browser makers these days.
If you’re on a Mac, just use Safari. It’s fine, I promise. It works and if you’re tied into Apple’s ecosystem it integrates across it about as seamlessly as anything ever is these days. If you’re on a Mac laptop, your battery will thank you profusely for doing so. If you truly cannot stand Safari for some reason though, use Firefox.
If you’re on a PC, stop using Chrome. Don’t switch to Edge, which is just Microsoft’s skin around Chrome’s engine. Don’t switch to Vivaldi, or Brave, or whatever other cottage browser has sprung up on the last couple of weeks, because they’re all Chrome under the hood. Even Opera is just Chrome now. It may not be Google’s specific flavor of Chrome, but you are still abetting a new browser monoculture and giving Google more control over the way the web works. Just switch to Firefox. It’s easy, it’s fast, you’ll barely (if at all) notice the difference, and you’ll be supporting the only (mostly) independent browser manufacturer left.
While you’re at it, make sure you install the uBlock Origin plug-in and switch your search engine to DuckDuckGo. Google’s search results are garbage these days anyway (because, again, Google is not a search company anymore. They’re an ad company that wants to maximize the amount of money they can make from selling placement in their search results to the highest bidder).
If you’re a web developer, please for the love of god use Firefox as your daily driver and first test platform. Firefox’s dev tools are just as good as Chrome’s, the layout is just a little different, and I’ve yet to have Firefox do something wrong when Chrome doesn’t, but I can’t say the same in the opposite direction. Build for Firefox, check in Chrome (and Safari… there are tools for that too which don’t involve buying any Apple hardware, btw).
(On the subject of ad blockers: use them, and never feel guilty about it. I’ve advocated for them for years, and I will continue to do so even more vociferously since starting a job as a website builder for an ad agency. Please, make my coworkers’ jobs harder.)

Same Day Approvals on Loans: Fast, Convenient Financing Solutions for Today’s Borrowers
In today’s fast-paced world, time is money. Whether you're facing an unexpected expense, needing to jump on a business opportunity, or simply want to consolidate debt quickly, waiting days (or even weeks) for a loan approval can be inconvenient. This is where same day approvals on loans come in, providing quick access to funds with minimal waiting time.
What Are Same Day Approval Loans?
Same day approval loans are financial products designed to offer a quick, streamlined approval process. With these loans, lenders can approve applications within a matter of hours, often resulting in funds being deposited in the borrower's account on the same day they apply. This rapid response can be invaluable for people who need cash urgently, whether for medical emergencies, home repairs, or other pressing needs.
Types of Loans That Offer Same Day Approvals
Personal Loans: Many lenders now offer personal loans with same day approvals, making it possible to cover anything from unexpected expenses to planned events like vacations.
Payday Loans: Known for quick turnaround, payday loans offer immediate cash but often come with higher interest rates. They are typically due by the borrower’s next paycheck, so they work best for small, urgent financial needs.
Online Loans: Many online lenders specialize in providing fast approvals. These lenders can often assess your creditworthiness quickly, streamlining the approval process through automation.
Credit Union Loans: Some credit unions offer same day loans to members. Because credit unions are typically member-focused, they may be willing to approve a loan more quickly than traditional banks.
Auto Title Loans: These loans use your vehicle as collateral, allowing for faster approvals due to the secured nature of the loan. However, it’s essential to understand the risks, as defaulting could result in the loss of your vehicle.
Advantages of Same Day Approval Loans
Quick Access to Funds: The most significant advantage of same day loans is fast access to cash. In a financial emergency, knowing you can get funds within hours can provide peace of mind.
Convenience: Many same day loan applications are completed online, often requiring only a few documents. Borrowers can apply from the comfort of their own home, making the process much easier and faster.
Flexibility: Same day loans are typically available for a range of needs, whether you need to cover an unexpected car repair or want to seize a limited-time offer on a new gadget.
Improved Financial Flexibility: Having fast access to funds can allow borrowers to take advantage of time-sensitive opportunities, such as a business deal or discounted purchase.
How to Increase Your Chances of Same Day Approval
To improve your odds of getting approved for a same day loan, here are some helpful tips
Check Your Credit Score: Knowing your credit score beforehand helps you apply with lenders that cater to your credit range, improving your chances of fast approval.
Gather Documentation: Make sure you have necessary documents ready, like proof of income, ID, and bank statements. Lenders need this information to verify your identity and assess your financial situation.
Apply with Direct Lenders: Instead of going through a broker, consider applying directly with a lender that offers same day approvals. This cuts down on processing time.
Research the Lender’s Requirements: Different lenders have different criteria. By ensuring you meet their requirements, you can speed up the process.
Consider Online Lenders: Online lenders are often able to approve loans more quickly than traditional banks, due to their use of advanced technology for rapid credit assessment.
Potential Drawbacks to Be Aware Of
While same day approvals on loans are convenient, they can also come with some trade-offs
Higher Interest Rates: Quick-approval loans may carry higher interest rates, especially if the loan is unsecured. Be sure to read the terms carefully.
Shorter Repayment Terms: Some same day loans may have shorter repayment terms, which can mean higher monthly payments. Be sure to budget accordingly.
Risk of Predatory Lending: Not all lenders have your best interests at heart. Avoid lenders with high fees or penalties for early repayment, and look for reputable, well-reviewed lenders.
