Comments: Purchased as a mate for Moonshadow. Like with him, I’ve gone with a cat-like primary gene and gnarlhorns tert, with an unrelated secondary. I was originally thinking of going with stripes or striation for her, but in trying out other genes I found I really liked the look of hex with the small scattered hexagonal spotting on her mane. In her case I think it looks like little dapples of sunlight, which was the inspiration for her name.

3/25/21: Mezza x Luna

First candyclown nest with Earth eyes! I am absolutely thrilled with the first hatchling in particular. As much as I love the utter chaos that mosaic brings to a dragon, pinstripe is one of my favorite genes of all time and because it’s rarer than mosaic, this pair doesn’t give me too many pinstripe kiddos.

Fun little bit of trivia about this pair: of the 9 XXYs they’ve produces, four of those have been Rose/Rose/x

Comments: Decided I wanted to do with Moonshadow the same thing I’d done with Oronte, Tindome, and Tsamma: give him two mates, whose widest range with him would go in opposite directions around the colour wheel, and alternate clutches between the two.

Between Sundew here, and his already-gened-up mate Sundapple (who has a yellow primary), their combined primary range covers everything except grapefruit, banana, sanddollar, and flaxen. Sundew has also been given the same genes as Sundapple has. It also works out that Sundew should turn RTB just as Moonshadow becomes RTB again after his first clutch with Sundapple.

Comments: Kept looking at Moonshadow and his mates Sundapple & Sundew, and thinking how nice it’d be to have a gaoler pair with similar colour ranges, but something other than gnarlhorn for tertiary. Seeing as I’m a fan of weathered, and scorpion seems to be about the same rarity as that... well, this is the male of a new pair I’ve ended up putting together based on all of the above. Decided to change him to braids since I haven’t been liking mow much of the primary of their offspring ends up covered by weathered.

Ended up naming him Altair just because I’m reading an Assassin’s Creed fanfic at the moment, though he very clearly is not a fandragon of same.

Comments: Wanted a pair of gnarlhorn gaolers, and have been trying out ideas for a pair in morpholgy in breaks between bouts of coli grinding over the last three days. Was looking at various XXY and XYY combinations mostly, then when playing around with an XYY of white late last night, I decided I wanted the tertiary to be at least a small range of the near-white colours, which basically ended up maize through moon since I didn’t want to go into the pinks or include ice.

With just white as the secondary that would have been a 1 in 5 chance of an XYY... but it would also work out to a 1 in 5 (5 in 25) if the secondary covered the same 5-colour range as the tertiary.  So I ended up looking at XYY of moon and XYY of maize dragons, and putting together a pair with a very wide primary range (as I often like to do with one of the ranges) and then small matched secondary-tertiary ranges.

Since I was also thinking of putting together one or more kitty gaolers, I decided to go with cat-like genes for their primaries, but decided against matching the genes in secondary.

I may put together a second mate for Moonshadow that takes the primary colour range around the opposite side of the colour wheel, and alternate clutches between the two of them.
