A worldwide study led by climate scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, estimates that in the event of a full-scale nuclear war between the United States and Russia, 75% of the world population would sadly succumb to hunger within two years. Additionally, between three and four years after the conflict, the global average calorie production from crops would drastically plunge by 90%. The study explains that while nuclear blasts would cause local radioactive contamination, soil and water pollution, infrastructure destruction and supply chain disruptions, they would also create firestorms that would emit massive amounts of sunlight-blocking soot into the stratosphere. As the soot dispersed around the globe, Earth’s temperature would rapidly decline, leading to widespread crop failures, food shortages and famine.

Global Hunger Crisis and Food Wasted. There is enough food produced in the world to feed everyone.  One third of all food produced is lost or wasted – around 1.3 billion tonnes of food – costing the global economy close to $940 billion each year. One in nine people do not have enough food to eat; that’s 793 million people who are undernourished. If one quarter of the food currently lost or wasted could be saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million hungry people. Almost half of all fruit and vegetables produced are wasted (that’s 3.7 trillion apples). 8% of greenhouse gases heating the planet are caused by food waste. If food waste was a country, it would be the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases after USA and China. Eliminating global food waste would save 4.4 million tonnes of C02 a year, the equivalent of taking one in four cars off the road. Associates from Rich’s manufacturing facility in Eagan, Minnesota, recently got together to help turn hunger into hope for needy children. As part of their ongoing community outreach efforts, associates partnered with Feed My Starving Children to help pack nutritious meals for hungry kids.

FMSC - a Christian nonprofit organization founded in 1987 - was near and dear to the plant’s late manager, Bruce Kasten, a lifelong Rich’s associate who passed away last January. The organization uses donations to provide nutritionally complete meals for malnourished children in far-flung locations across the globe.

Rich’s associate Cynthia Macias organized an FMSC meal-packing event earlier this year, resulting in an astonishing total of 21,168 meals – enough to feed 58 children for one year. Several Rich’s associates hand-packed the special “MannaPack” meals, which are specifically designed to reverse malnutrition. The meals are distributed daily to schools, orphanages, clinics and feeding programs through FMSC’s in-country food partners.
