The upper echelons of auto racing serve as a platform where automakers show off their technology and engineering prowess. A global phenomenon, the major racing series, such as the NASCAR Cup Series and the Global Rallycross Championship, hold races at many of the world’s historic race tracks. Automakers use these races to boast their wins as they compete in different car racing categories. Some major car racing categories are open-wheel, sports cars, and touring cars.

Open-wheel races feature cars with an open single-seat cockpit and exposed wheels. It is more popularly known as formula racing and is considered the apex of auto racing. There are two premier series of open-wheel racing: Formula 1 (F1) and IndyCar. F1 cars are equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged v6 engines. F1 engineering emphasizes aerodynamics and downforce. Downforce allows an F1 car to whip through racetrack corners at high speed. IndyCar has its roots in American racing and is similar to F1. IndyCars are equipped with 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 engines. IndyCars crank out around 700 horsepower, lower than the F1 output of about 1000 horsepower.

Sports car racing series use vehicles that look like high-performance cars. The most popular car models used in the series are the Lamborghini Huracan, Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 488, Porsche 911, and Nissan GT-R. In a sports car racing series, races last between 2.5 and 24 hours. The length of the race is a grueling test for man and machine.

Touring car races are popular in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The cars used in these races are heavily modified because they are based on road-going production vehicles. Touring car races may vary from a sprint (short distance) to an endurance (race that lasts up to three hours). Touring cars have different aerodynamics and performance requirements depending on the rules set by a particular series.

Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) has today announced its entry into Extreme E, becoming the second major American team to commit to the pioneering new electric SUV off-road racing series. Founded and helmed by former racer Chip Ganassi, the eponymously-named Chip Ganassi Racing celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Over the past three decades, the team has claimed no fewer than 19 major titles and more than 220 race wins across a wide variety of motorsport disciplines – from INDYCAR to IMSA and NASCAR to the FIA World Endurance Championship – and in partnership with eight different manufacturers. Rosberg's team beats Hamilton's in opening round of Extreme E

Nico Rosberg’s team won the first race of the new electric Extreme E off-road series in Saudi Arabia on Sunday while Lewis Hamilton’s X44 outfit hit problems and finished third in a cloud of dust.

Retired 2016 Formula One champion Rosberg was in Al Ula to celebrate the Desert X Prix victory with Sweden’s triple rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson and Australian rally driver Molly Taylor.

Andretti United, run by Michael Andretti and McLaren F1 boss Zak Brown, were second in the three-car final with Sweden’s Timmy Hansen and Britain’s Catie Munnings 23.73 seconds off the pace.

Hamilton’s team of France’s nine times world rally champion Sebastien Loeb and Spaniard Cristina Gutierrez had been fastest in Saturday’s qualifying but suffered steering problems.

The seven times F1 world champion, who did not attend, sent a good luck message on Instagram before the race expressing his pride in what they had done so far.

Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula One champion, finished sixth after his JBXE team failed to make the final while triple Dakar winner Carlos Sainz was fourth.

Time trials had started on Saturday, around a sandy and rock-strewn track that also featured a plunging drop amid the dunes.

Kristoffersson made the best start in the final, leaving the others trailing in the dust, before Taylor put in a solid run after the handover to seal the win.

The pair had been fastest also in the semi-final when the identical ODYSSEY 21 cars went wheel to wheel for the first time.

Sunday saw the first multi-car collision, with Chip Ganassi’s Kyle Leduc and ABT Cupra driver Claudia Huertgen coming together.

Extreme E aims to highlight climate change and promote sustainability by racing in remote parts of the world affected by global warming or suffering environmental damage.

There are five rounds ranging from locations in the Arctic to the Amazon and every team must field a male and female driver.

The next round of the championship will take place in Senegal on May 29-30 and series owner Alejandro Agag is already considering changes to the format of the races to make them more exciting and to force teams to pit the female drivers directly against the male ones.

“I’m thinking of tweaks and I have two in my mind — one I just came up with while I was watching the shootout,” Agag said after Sunday’s race. “I’m thinking that maybe I do a draw, a lottery, for who races, so we mix female and male drivers for all the races.

“Otherwise we are seeing that the teams are lining up all the men at one point and the women second. But I will think about it, it’s just an idea.”

The only point at which a male and female driver were in direct competition came during the battle for seventh and eighth place, when Leduc was unsighted by dust and crashed into the back Huertgen’s car as he attempted to overtake.

“I think one of the most exciting moments of the weekend was when Kyle was catching Claudia and, sadly for them, they had an impact, but that’s also racing.

“Another possible change is to introduce some sector for doing a time trial [qualifying-style run] also on the Sunday in the three car race.

“We will go to Senegal and really check the dust level there. We came here a few months ago but the temperature has really risen a lot here [creating more dust], but his has changed less in Senegal.

“We are going to check in SUVs and see what the level of dust is and then take some decisions. I want to listen to as many people in our ecosystem as I can.

“Definitely there will be some tweaks, but I think the three car race today [instead of a time trial] was the right call.”

Ken Block’s World Rallycross Team is Calling it Quits

You won’t see Ken Block on the starting grid of World Rallycross next season. The 2017 FIA World Rallycross Championship season will be the last for the Hoonigan Racing team, at least for the foreseeable future. The team, which consists of drivers Ken Block and Andreas Bakkerud, is backed by Ford Performance and it sounds like the group wasn’t looking forward to investing more money into developing a new race car for the series. “Although we have thoroughly enjoyed competing in the exciting FIA World Rallycross Championship, it’s a natural time for us to take a break as the future of the series takes shape,” said Dave Pericak, global director of Ford Performance. “To continue in [the championship] would have required the development of a new race car, and with so much discussion happening around the future of rallycross from a powertrain package standpoint, it made sense for us to pause until it’s better defined.” SEE ALSO: Ken Block Rips up Pikes Peak in His 1400 HP Mustang in ‘Climbkhana’ If you’re a fan of Block however, this news doesn’t change too much for his relationship with Ford. In an Instagram post, Block confirmed he will be racing next season but he will be going back to doing stage rallies, Gymkhana GRID races, and “more rad video projects with Ford as usual.” The news comes after Block and Bakkerud have competed nearly two seasons in the Focus RS RX race car. They won’t go on sale once the season is done either, instead they will be used for displays and demos based on pre-existing agreements with Ford Performance. Well, today is a tough one for me. Ford Performance and myself have announced that we will not be continuing our World Rallycross Championship race program after the end of this current season. It’s been a tough two years of developing the Focus RS RX rallycross car, and I’ve learned a ton from that process – as well as from my teammate Andreas Bakkerud. I’ll still be racing in 2018, but I’ll be going back to doing some stage rallies, Gymkhana GRID races, plus more rad video projects with Ford as usual. As for Andreas, I wish him nothing but the best of luck next season. He’s been an exemplary teammate, and has ended up becoming a very good friend of mine as well. Someone is going to be landing themselves a very, very talented driver next season! I’d also like to say a BIG thank you to my entire Hoonigan Racing team for their relentless effort and dedication these last two years. We’ve had some great experiences, and I’m both proud and thankful for all of the hard work you’ve all put in to help this program. Super start to the season for the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team in Memphis: Defending champion Scott Speed (USA) won the opening round of this season’s Global Rallycross Championship (GRC), with team-mate Tanner Foust (USA) following him over the line in second place to complete the first one-two for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross. The dominance of the two 560-hp Volkswagen Beetle GRCs was clear to see, even before the final. Not only did Speed and Foust claim pole position and second on the grid in qualifying, but they also won all the individual heats. There was no beating the two Volkswagen drivers in the weekend’s two semi-finals at the 1.9-kilometre circuit in Memphis. Scott Speed reached a special milestone, claiming the twelfth GRC win of his career to set a new record. This was also the 19th victory for Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross. “It is obviously great to have more wins to my name in the GRC than any other driver. However, wins like this are only possible with a fantastic team. Everyone did a fantastic job during the winter break,” said Speed. The next race weekend in the Global Rallycross Championship will take place on 20 and 21 May in Louisville (USA).

The next numbered installment in the DiRT Franchise has been announced by Codemasters! Following the success of surprise hit DiRT Rally, Codies has announced the first full installment of the DiRT franchise in nearly six years, DiRT 4, will be coming in June 6th, 2017!

DiRT 3 was released in May of 2011, and was regarded as a solid racing title, bogged down by short stages, and also what was regarded to as the “Dude Bro mentality”. Four years later, DiRT Rally was seemingly dropped on our laps, and appealed strongly to the hardcore rally fans, and pleased many sim racers.

DiRT Rally’s game engine seems to be the base for DiRT 4, and it will feature more locations, more cars, and more features/modes. Most notably, a new addition will be “Your Stage”. You will be able to build a custom stage (most likely using the locations as a base), and race it and share with friends. One great element will be the fact that stage length will be able to be set by the racer, so new rally drivers could set short stages, while more experienced drivers will run longer courses.

DiRT 4 sports an all-new system called Your Stage; an innovative rally route creation tool that allows you to produce a near infinite number of unique stages at the touch of a button. Choosing your location and setting the route parameters , Your Stage does the hard work to create a unique rally stage that you can race, share with your friends and then challenge them to beat your time. Your Stage allows experienced rally players to create longer, more technical routes, whilst newcomers can create simpler shorter routes as they hone their skills.
