Fiberglass Recycling
Fiberglass is a type of composite that consists of a polymer material reinforced with glass fibers. Because of the nature of many composites, and the separation that recycling would entail, fiberglass is not often recycled and is considered to be difficult to recycle. This is particularly the case if thermoset polymers are used (as opposed to thermoplastic polymers), which cannot currently be recycled. Typically, when fiberglass is recycled, it is ground down before separation occurs between the plastic and glass components, and only the glass is often recycled. It should be noted that fiberglass is often made from recycled glass as a raw material to begin with. As the demand to recycle fiberglass increases, interest also grows in developing the infrastructure and policies needed to do so.

It is finally done!
Is it perfect? No. Did I run out of black floss when I had about 1/4 of it left to do? Yes. When I went to Joann's to use my gift card while I still could, were they out of the one floss I needed? Yes.
I ended up using pearl cotton because it was near the floss because it looked like it could get the job done and it was black. You can't really tell the difference from a distance.
For this reason, I'm calling this bad boy Perseverance (Percy for short).
I has been unseasonably warm this week, so I was hoping to wear this outside this weekend. Unfortunately I woke up to more snow.
Regardless, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

I love a rainbow quilt and I love love love the way that fabric designer Alison Glass colors her fabrics. So this quilt was a delight to work on and kept me smiling thru out the process. There are about 30 hours in the quilting of this one.

Weird bullshit my art career has led me to lately: carding cotton balls apart with dog brushes and painting melted safety glass.

Recycling research finds new process to transform glass fiber-reinforced plastic into silicon carbide
Glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP), a strong and durable composite material, is widely used in everything from aircraft parts to windmill blades. Yet the very qualities that make it robust enough to be used in so many different applications make it difficult to dispose of—consequently, most GFRP waste is buried in a landfill once it reaches its end of life. According to a study published in Nature Sustainability, Rice University researchers and collaborators have developed a new, energy-efficient upcycling method to transform glass fiber-reinforced plastic (GFRP) into silicon carbide, widely used in semiconductors, sandpaper, and other products. "GFRP is used to make very large things, and for the most part, we end up burying the wing structures of airplanes or windmill blades from a wind turbine whole in a landfill," said James Tour, the T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor and professor of chemistry and of materials science and nanoengineering. "Disposing of GFRP this way is just unsustainable. And until now, there has been no good way to recycle it."

and on christmas eve, 2024, my abominable child has completed their formation <3 tomorrow they will be received into their new home, and be granted their name, upon the ceremonial passing of hands (they're a christmas gift for my niece!)
details/construction info for anyone curious!
I crocheted the body with brushed, weight 4 yarn. basically just a big tube made of single crochets, with the two ends being tapered. the dark pink section was done with single crochets in back loops only to create a slightly different texture :) the body is completely plush (no spine), with the exception of the face, and therefore posable for wrapping, tangling, etc.
the face was hand-sculpted using oven-bake clay. I drew a template on parchment paper with a thin sharpie, sculpted a base shape using that, and when I flipped it over, the lines from the template were visible, so I was able to sculpt on top of the base using that as a reference.
the eyes/eyelids were made separately. they were sculpted to shape, then pressed around googly eyes and lightly into the eye sockets to ensure a decent fit. the eyes were then removed and disassembled, and the clay portion baked separate.
once baked, all the pieces for the face were all painted pink. I also painted some white cotton thread and some cotton cordage, which would be both used to adhere the faceplate to the body.
the faceplate has a number of holes around it, as well as four holes resembling those of a button behind the eyes. all of those were sewn through, using a mix of hand stitching, hand treading, and an itty bitty crochet hook for a couple, using that cordage and thread mentioned in the last bullet.
once the faceplate was attached, I used super glue to attach the eyelids to the googly eyes, and then the eyes to the faceplate.
bonus in-progress photo from after sewing, but before adhering the eyes, to better see everything

Corrie Guard: Fox & Patches
@megneato did two more AMAZING commissions for me (the first was Ma Dong-Seok as Paz Vizsla, he’s beautiful, go look at him), which was to help get my headcanon down for what Fox looks like, and a design for my Corrie Medic OC, Patches! (I belatedly realized that is a common medic OC name. I am. Not sorry. ...or original.)

CC 1010: FOX
tired
like, so fucking tired
Constantly Vibrating Ball of Rage
hair gone white from stress and torture via Evil Sith Shenanigans
lightning scars around his neck, continue below armor on the right side of his torso
no tattoos so that he could pass as some of the other clones (this works up until the scarring and the trauma hair)

CT 9113: PATCHES
MASSIVE baby bro/vod’ika vibes, is from one of the more recent batches
very gentle and sweet and smiley
name comes from his patchwork scars, which were the result of being yeeted through a pane of glass (exact scenario as of yet undecided)
does actually have a kind bedside manner, but do not be fooled: he will also use the big sad eyes RUTHLESSLY
‘i’m not mad, just disappointed’ except instead of disappointed dad it’s your little brother who looks up to you and thinks the world of you and now you let him DOWN
that said, if he’s visibly angry, you should probably run.

It is an active goal of mine to start an artist collective focused on Gaelic (and Celtic) styled art
but not just revival, specifically looking to the future in modernizing and innovating existing visual styles, especially in digital mediums.
If this is interesting to you in the slightest, please dm me!
