S2E1 scene 3: Park bench
Daytime, shot of the building, people, we're moving to St. James Park, we're watching the river, Crowley is sitting alone on a bench, reading the paper. He is leaning on the railing with his right hand. Close-up of Crowley. You can see the silver frames of the glasses, the sign of the snake on the right (the height of the infinity loop just below the earlobe). He is wearing a polo shirt with the button undone. A man with a briefcase in a checkered coat joins him.
M: The clarinet
M: can make beautiful music.
Crowley folds the newspaper, looks at the man
C: You what?
M: The clarinet?
M: It can make beautiful music?
C: Wrong bench.
C: You want the Azerbaijani Sector Chief. He's over there.
Crowley hides behind the newspaper, having previously pointed his head forward. The man grunts and walks away.
We hear the sound of a miracle. Crowley hides the newspaper again and we see his reflection in a small mirror. The shot shows Shax sitting to Crowley's left. She is dressed in a red coat with a large decorative bow, a beret decorated with a feather, and a red dress.
S: I brought your mail.
C: Anything interesting?
S: Bills, mostly.
Shax hands the letters to Crowley.
S: I don't understand why they won't just deliver them to your car.
C: Send the bills to Hell's finance office.
S: I did.
S: They say they can't accept my signature as your replecement.
Crowley looks straight ahead, the camera probably shows the Head of the Azerbaijani Section and the man who joined Crowley on the bench earlier.
C: Don't give them bread, you idiot
C: Ducks shouldn't eat bread.
Re-shot on Shax and Crowley
S: What are you meant to give them then?
C: Do they know?
S: The ducks?
C: Downtairs
C: Do they know you're checking in with me?
S: Crowley, I'm now Hell's representative in London
S: And Hell doesn't care how jobs get done
C: Yeah, I remember
C: They just care that somebody does them.
During the conversation, we see Shax sitting stiffly, elegantly, as she makes a point about being a representative, she drapes her handbag over her lap and becomes a bit more formal.
C: Pfffft
C: Do you ever just think what's the pint?
S: How do you mean?
C: What's the point of it all?
C: Heaven. Hell. Demons. Angels.
C: It's all… well, pointless?
Crowley shakes his head in disgust, Shax gives him an appraisal look, smiles slightly, faces him.
S: Was it always this easy?
C: Easy?
S: I keep planning complicated strategic strikes to spread misery and panic among the humans, and just as I'm about to put one into motion, they come up with something themselves which id so much worse than anything I could have thought of.
C: Yeah. Always this easy.
Crowley turns his head towards the river.
C: Antithing going on I should know about?
S: You're still persona non grata
C: Yeah
S: Beelzebub put some of the lesser demons on half-rations
Crowley nods with an "oh, interesting but ok" face
S: And something's up.
C: Up where?
S: Up… up…
Dark music plays, Crowley clearly interested in this information, turns back to Shax.
C: something big?
S: Don't know
S: We just got a rumor that something's going down in the up.
S: If you get wind of anything through your contact in the bookshop, let me know?
C: Nah, they don't talk to him anymore
S: If I learn anything that you might find useful, I'll tell you, and in return, you tell me what I need.
Crowley wears a bored, indifferent expression on his face as he hears that something has happened upstairs, looking off into the distance.
S: Got anything for me?
C: Frozen peas.
S: What?
C: That's what you feed ducks. frozen peas. They love them, and it's good for them too.
Crowley gets up and walks away, we see Shax on a bench processing the conversation they just had.
Questions:
Shax says, "I don't understand why they won't just deliver them to your car." Who should deliver the bills to the car? And why should Crowley pay any bills? For what? For a phone call? After all, the apartment is not for him? is it?
S: "They say they can't accept my signature as your replecement." Why? Why can't they?
Why Bills? What is this scene for? No need to talk about bills or if hell accepts Shax's signature as a replacement.
S: "Beelzebub put some of the lesser demons on half-rations" for what? Withdrawals? Food? What do demons even need that can be rationed? And why such a cut that looks like a systemic/collective action, not personal.
Frozen peas. And why are we talking about ducks again? And are we talking about ducks?
Why are we talking about how hell doesn't care how things are done? Why are we talking about people being better at getting themselves uphill than hell's emissaries? and that the existence of angels and demons is meaningless
Hypotheses:
Shax doesn't understand how humanity and calculations work. Crowley never bothered paying the bills, going through the paperwork. He maxed out his bills (we know from the book that he also sent a contract for electronic equipment with the note "learn")
Hell is badly organized, but hell put up Shax as a replacement. Hell doesn't know humanity either and doesn't know how to deal with rewriting property? Is this a problem at all? Will this have consequences?
This is the second time the issue of paying for something has been discussed in this episode. The first is in the Magie's rent scene. Payments can be a thing.
Another mention of payments and the fact that someone does not get it. Why did Bee decide to do this? It's possible that this is a form of motivation for the dispatch to find Gabriel, it's possible that Bee already knows he's missing.
Well, you certainly don't give ducks frozen food, you give them peas, yes, but not frozen ones. Frozen peas, however, sound almost like a fragile, temporary peace.
Because as Adam said at the end of the book, it's best for people to be left alone.
