The setting is an elegant room decorated with silks on the wall. The white dress of the mother is flamboyant and elegant. The boy in front interrupts his reading to see his brother who points on the map to Rome, as capital of the newly united country, which reflects national interests. The artist has chosen to portray a woman in the intimate act of nursing her child. It is her role as a mother that is celebrated.

" I Funerali di Timoleonte" (1874) | Giuseppe Sciuti | Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) di Palermo.

The painting depicts the funeral of Timoleon, the Corinthian hero, in the ancient agora of Syracuse.

La tela monumentale rievoca il momento solenne delle grandiose onoranze funebri di Timoleonte. L’ eroe corinzio aveva liberato Siracusa dalla tirannia di Dionigi il Giovane (344 a.C.), garantendo alla Sicilia un periodo di pace e prosperità sotto l’egemonia siracusana.Il saggio di pittura storica dedicato da Sciuti alla rievocazione dell’antichità classica è elaborato con una stesura impressionistica di luci e una materia coloristica sfaldata. Nel dipinto l’accadimento storico è trasfigurato per dare vita a un’immaginaria e grandiosa trattazione scenografica.( Galleria d'Arte Moderna (GAM) di Palermo)
