Chioggia Before Sunrise Giuseppe Canella Elder 1838
Chioggia Before Sunrise depicts the beautiful town of Chioggia, situated around 16 miles south of Venice on an island in the Venetian Lagoon. This painting is from Giuseppe’s Venice period, as he had already gained a reputation as a painter of Vedute, or factually accurate views painted with precision.
The naturalistic and moralistic approach of Canella’s paintings came from the Italian novelist Alessandro Manzoni, who too had depicted the simple, humble, and poor aspects of life in novels such as I Promessi Sposi - The Bethroded.
