In 1960 Pininfarina was asked by Alfa Romeo to design a spider based on the Sprint Speciale. They developed a prototype in 1961, of which ultimately went into production in 1966. The popular Giulia Spider, a mainstay of Alfa Romeo, found its replacement with the Duetto Spider. Reliability and performance were strong, with the majority of the new car's mechanical components carried over unaltered from the proven Giulia. What is it about Italy and style? How can one smallish nation have dominated the world’s sense of style for the past two thousand years? Here we have a 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F, with coachwork by Pininfarina, sprinting past Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan. The apse and crossing of this late Gothic church were completed by Bramante before he went to Rome to create the High Renaissance in architecture. (Did I mention that da Vinci’s Last Supper is inside?) And what seems more fresh and natural than the juxtaposition of classic cars with classic architecture?

Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ II 'Coda Tronca', 1962, by Zagato. The ultimate sporting development of Alfa Romeo’s first generation Giulietta. It was based on the short wheelbase platform of the Giulietta Spider using the mechanicals of the racier Sprint Veloce. Ercole Spada designed the SZ and the aluminium bodies was constructed by Zagato. The cars were expensive due to the 300 hours necessary to build the bodywork. The cars used perspex side windows to reduce weight. Only 44 'Coda Tronca' versions were built with a lower roof line and the cut-off Kamm tail, which improved aerodynamics
