The more one thinks about it the more obvious it becomes that the way Kusanagi treats Batou in SAC is... bound to blow up in her face. You can have your reasons your insecurities but you just CANT treat people like that. Especially those you actually love. Theres no way that woman wouldnt get retribution. Like it has already started in 2045 but this only setup I suspect.
#like its also not really good in oshii dilogy but that whole different converstion#batou#anime and manga#ghost in the shell#gits#gits sac#major#motoko kusanagi#sac 2045

Ghost in the Shell adaption tier list
The original manga would also be in Pretty good for me, good for what it is but the sillier tone of it is not why I fell in love with GITS and it's a little too horny for me. The Oshii films are masterpieces of psychological cyberpunk storytelling, philosophical discussion about identity and moody atmosphere. The Stand Alone Complex show is also phenomenal overall and occasionally peak but is a 2 season show so some of it is better then other parts, but it has the strongest characterization of the Major and the rest of section 9 and uses it's cyberpunk setting to explore political themes more. Solid State Society is the film for SAC so it's more of that. Arise is also pretty good in the same ways but doesn't feel quite as interesting in it's story and there's less of it which also goes for it's associated film, and also the SAC follow up 2045 which also has the below average 3D animation that does not look as good as the usually gorgeous 2D. The american live action one with the straight white woman playing a bi/pansexual Japanese woman that also completely misinterprets the themes of GITS to make a generic "technology bad" plot doesn't exist.
Made this because the new one that seems to be sticking closer to the original manga just got announced.

is sac 2045 good.. i really want more gits but all thats left is that and the *pukes* live action
sac 2045 is good if you're, like me, someone who prefers SAC over '95. personally I loved the writing and story of GITS first and foremost, and the pretty visuals (like in '95) secondary, so the (lower-budget, assuredly, but mostly just stylised) visuals don't bother me as much as they do others. I liked s1 of 2045, I haven't got around to watching s2 yet. for me, also, the hollywood version doesn't offer much in the way of 'high concept military scifi political thriller' as much as it does 'aestheticised action movie that asymptotically approaches Sucker Punch rather than GitS' lol

Ghost in the Shell SAC 2045: Sustainable War Film

I just saw Ghost in the Shell SAC 2045: Sustainable War, a 3D anime feature film. At first I thought, "Ok, another Motoko Kusanagi, Secton 9, blah blah blah." But I was wrong. It's a brilliant piece of cyberpunk that takes combat, cyber technology and biotech far into the future and sees its implications. It's also a really good GITS, for fans of Kusanagi. On Netflix.

insane crackpot crossover.
You know how technically Abe Lincoln could have sent a fax to a samurai as they all existed at the same time? Well.... GitS SAC takes place in 2030. John is on Tumblr now, prolly doing his under grad. He plasters his abilities on Twitch and Youtube. The Net is Motoko's main stick. Section 9 deal with cyber crimes. Esp in the Pan Pacific area. There is precedent for the team tracking down nukes and also finding/solving cases of the ''hacking'' of public officials. You can't tell me that a government seeking someone to puppet their leader wouldn't come under Aramaki's and The Major's radar. This would come under the Public Safety Bureau's purview, esp if it was deemed a threat to safety of Japan. If it didn't come under their jurisdiction? In 2045, the team are dealing with Post Humans. Could John and his cult be classed as post human? Who knows? But Motoko would not leave that stone unturned. She might even take an interest as a private citizen, esp when you consider the bigger philosophical questions raised such as what constitutes the soul/ghost etc etc. Aramaki would most certainly not be cool with the trillionaires bullshit leading up to the events of their escape. It becomes a race against time to figure out if John is the real deal. Lots of cyber space water cooler gossip to filter through. John is searching for proof the trillionaires are lying n tryna get out of dodge. Motoko could find that proof, then its a case of getting the Japanese government to give Sec9 the go ahead. They don't, their hands are tied. Maybe Motoko agrees with John initially. She rushes through the net, gets her ghost onboard one of the trillionaire's ships, but then John makes his move. The Major is not best pleased by this devastation wrought upon the human race, but she's stuck in the data stream of the ships with no prosthetic body to inhabit. All this time, she has been mistaken for a really old AI, passed down from generation to generation. She's the reason why boe have Emma Sen and Aim. She's biding her time. Some day, someone will build the technology of an android body n then its all over for John Gaius. The Major, Motoko Kusanagi is the reason why John Gaius scrapped the internet from necromantic boogaloo 2.0. He's terrified she'll find his ass.

The realest part of GitS SAC 2045 is togusa's cyber brain visual feed being constantly plagued by ads.

The thing about GitS is that every interpretation has a different director's strong fingerprint - so most people tend to be into one specific version more than the others. The manga is particularly divisive - for some people the manga is a gleefully autistic masterpiece whose passion and energy cannot be captured by Production I.G.'s dry approach, for others the manga is dumb porn which was elevated by the atmospheric, philosophical style of Oshii, Okiura, Inoue et al. SAC faces a similar range of opinion - 2000s classic or pale shadow of Oshii's film, depending who you ask.
nobody seems to think Arise or SAC 2045 are any good though.
Ghost in the Shell is supposed to be good, right? What would be a good starting point for that? (Ideally available on Hulu and/or Netflix.)
So I actually do not like Ghost in the Shell! I think the Oshii film is quite bad, and I found what I watched of SAC to be on the boring side and did not continue. I thought that was enough of a good faith effort that I haven't really engaged with the franchise since.
Which means I am not an expert; maybe SAC gets good, maybe the most recent remake is great, maybe the manga is awesome - I do actually want to read the manga, I think it will not have the same failures the film has. It is of course subjective, if you think it is going to be your thing you should absolutely go ahead. When the 1995 film came out in the west it was a huge success, and no one here had any exposure to any other part of the franchise. Most fans started there, no reason you can't.
#one day i will write about all the different versions of gits in detail#but not this day#science saru's new adaptation will probably be out by that point#anime#ghost in the shell
