Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964)

In 1964, producer Paul L. Jacobson made this B movie in two weeks for a measly $200,000. It promptly tanked. In 1978, the film was listed in the book “The Fifty Worst Films of All Time.” But since then, a la “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” it has become a cult classic. Made popular by “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the movie about a Martian scheme to kidnap St. Nick so he can distribute gifts to alien kids is so laughably bad that it’s perfect for midnight viewing on Christmas Eve. What to look forward to: the screen debut of actress and singer Pia Zadora, a troop of unitard-wearing spacemen sporting plastic stun guns and the particularly earworm-y theme song, “Hooray for Santy Claus!”

Ao consultar seu sábio ancião Chochem, eles são alertados de que as crianças de Marte estão com seu futuro em risco graças à rígida estrutura social do planeta; desde a infância, a educação deles é recebida diretamente no cérebro através de máquinas, e elas não têm permissão para praticar o individualismo ou a liberdade de expressão.

Chochem tristemente constata que ele prevê isso há séculos, e afirma que o único meio de salvar as crianças é deixar que elas tenham liberdade, e que possam se divertir. Para isto, elas precisam de um Papai Noel, como na Terra.

Os líderes marcianos decidem então capturar o Papai Noel e trazê-lo para Marte para que ele possa fabricar brinquedos para as crianças do planeta. No entanto, um marciano, tradicionalista e ligado às raízes guerreiras de Marte, permanece em constante discordância em relação à ideia e repetidamente tenta matar o Papai Noel, e também as duas crianças terrestres capturadas, já que ele acredita que Noel está corrompendo as crianças marcianas e afastando-as da glória original da raça.

Santa on Mars

Unannounced to humans, there is a thriving, technologically sophisticated society of Martians living below the surface of Mars. In the capital city beneath the Face of Cydonia, Lord Kimar and Lady Momar are worried that their children Girmar and Bomar are watching too much Earth television, most notably station KID-TV's Christmas special. Consulting the ancient 800-year-old Martian sage Chochem, Kimar and his associates are advised that the children of Mars are growing distracted due to the society's overly rigid structure. Chochem says that the only way to help the children is to allow them their freedom and be allowed to have fun. To do this, Mars needs a Santa Claus figure, like on Earth. Leaving Chochem's abode, the Martians decide to abduct Santa Claus from Earth and bring him to Mars. As they try to gather information on him, Dropo, Kimar's childlike assistant who has stowed away, befriends the siblings William “Billy” and Betty Foster, taking them on a tour of the Martian’s ship. However, he is forced to hide them from the other Martians, who are overheard by the children as they discuss their plans. Choosing to remain on the ship as it departs for the North Pole, Billy and Betty plan to reach Santa before the Martians to warn him. At the North Pole, they sneak out ahead of the Martians, but are discovered and brought back to the ship, while the robot Torg is sent to assist in Santa’s capture. When Santa manages to instill emotion into Torg, the Martians coerce him into accompanying them back to Mars, to which he complies. On the return trip, one Martian, Voldar, who strongly disagrees with the idea of mirth on Mars, tries to kill Santa Claus along with Billy and Betty, but they manage to escape while he flees. When they arrive on Mars, Santa and the children build a factory to make toys for the Martian children. However, Voldar sends his assistants, the twins Stoubo and Shimm, to sabotage the factory. Meanwhile, Dropo, who has taken a great liking to Santa Claus and Christmas, puts on one of Santa's spare suits goes to the toy factory to make toys, but Stoubo and Shimm mistake him for Santa and kidnap him. Held hostage in Voldar’s lair, Dropo discovers that Voldar, is the clone of an old Martian nobleman, Nobmar, who is currently in cryonic sleep; Voldar, having put him there after turning against him, is literally heartless, explaining his apathy. When Santa and the children come back to the factory the next morning, they discover that the machines have been tampered with. Having learned that they have actually taken Dropo, yet believing that they can still trick Kimar, Voldar and Stoubo come back to the factory to make a deal with him, but when he shows him the real Santa Claus, they realize that their plan has been foiled. Dropo awakes Nobmar, and they manage to trick Shimm and escape. As Stoubo is taken into custody, Voldar, resisting arrest, reactivates an old Martian battle mecha in order to destroy Santa. When Betty is threatened, Billy, using a miniature flying sleigh, rescues her, while the Martian children use a bubble cannon to bring down the mecha permanently. Santa then makes a heart for Voldar, who is filled with emotion for the first time; Overcome with newfound compassion and regret, he silently allows himself, Stoubo and Shimm to be arrested by Kimar. As the Martians celebrate, Santa notes that Dropo would make a good Martian Santa Claus figure. Kimar agrees and sends Santa and the Earth children back home.

Pia Zadora mostly set acting aside to make music, which she has better critical ratings doing than her movies, and this 1985 album has her with the London Philharmonic.
