Hey-- do you know what it says on the desk in Mort de Marat? I've found some images where it says "à Marat, David" and some where it says "n'ayant pu me corrompre ils m'ont assassiné" and I don't know what the real version is. Btw thank you so much for this blog and all of your help with sources and documents and writings and whatnot.
Hello! Thanks for your message, and thank you for your kind words. :)
As to the words on the wooden box: there are several versions and copies of La Mort de Marat, and while most of them stem from David’s atelier, not all of them have been painted by David himself.

The one that is today exhibited in Brussels (cf. image above), which has the words “À Marat. David.” written on the box, is commonly considered to be the original (i.e. the one painted by David himself), but there are four famous copies that have been created by students of David.

the Louvre copy, presumably painted by Gioacchino Serangeli ; the box bears the inscription “N'ayant pu me corrompre ils m'ont assassiné”.
the Versailles copy, created either by François Gérard or Jérôme-Martin Langlois ; in this version, there are no words written on the box.
the Reims copy, which belonged to David’s collection, also has the words “N'ayant pu me corrompre ils m'ont assassiné”written on the box.
the Dijon copy, whose creator is not known to us, does not bear an inscription either.
I hope I have been able to help you ; in case you want to find out more, this is my source. :) Have a nice day!
