A Gintama chapter a day keeps the ending away...Lesson 653
YATO FAMMM!!!! LOOK AT THEM!!! LOVE THEM SO MUCH!!!

MY 15 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 653:

1) Honestly, I kinda didn’t think Umibouzu’s plan would really work, but only because I firmly believed that the Joui Boys had to be the ones to kill Utsuro. But it was a really cool idea that made a lot of sense.

2) My heart just aches for them and the love they shared.

3) Then again, good thing Kouka wasn’t around to see how immature her husband still continued to be.

4) Umibouzu totally deserved that.

5) And that...even though that was kinda of cruel and disrespectful of Kamui.

6) This man child.

7) I have a feeling had Kouka lived, she would definitely had joined in on beating her idiotic husband up.

8) THAT was TOO freaking close for comfort. Holy crap.

9) I probably derive too much joy from watching Umibouzu being beaten up by his children and the Yorozuya.

10) Obviously Kamui inherited his dad’s idiocy, but I still love him.

11) Ugh, my heart....

12) Omggggg

13) TEARS.

14) MORE TEARS. Yorozuya love is EVERYTHING. And I’m so glad that Shinpachi and Kagura were both awake this time to hear Gintoki’s words of gratitude.

15) They so earned this. It made me so happy, I teared up all over again.
SHIPS TALLY:
Gintoki x Kagura: that was a rather interesting conversation between father and son about their Kagura. I guess if Gintoki ever did ask for Kagura’s hand in marriage, both her dad and older bro would not reject him.

Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just so freaking amazing. It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s generosity that I can enjoy Gintama on yet another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.

Gintama Chapter 653 Review
youtube
All missing pieces are finally coming together. We have been waiting for the greatest solution to all problems for a long time. I am talking about, of course, the almighty epic weapon: the hair gun! The chapter is filled with explanation of Altana setbacks with fun comedy and a sign of the end is drawing near.
It’s pretty cool to see how Umibozu went all over the universe to collect the Altana in order to face one greatest foe of his life. It’s a bit sad that one of the scientists wondered why Umibozu went out of his way to collect Altana crystal when his wife Kouka is dead. That line alone shows that they know each other for a while and his curiosity sees Umibozu rejuvenated his interest. His expression says the achievements have been unlocked.
The chapter explains the Altana and how Umibozu is using it to end Utsuro. It’s a good thing that the last arc already shows the weakness and key to victory before this chapter; otherwise, it would have feel like a great deus ex machina at the last minute. Utsuro’s strength was slowly showing off from immortality to Altana; it never left an impression that he is always unstoppable. Not to mention, the last arc already hinted Umibozu to play a key role to save the world.
The explanation does make sense on how he came close in the last arc. Altana is the source to Utsuro’s immortality, but it didn’t elaborate before on why he needs to go back to Earth to prevent actual death. It turns out that it’s a rare occasion that people can be born from Altana from their home planet. It treats it as their blood veins, as if to say the world is his/her body. It’s why Kouka starts to feel human and sick once she left her home planet. It was not only dying but it had little Altana crystal left to save her.
This explanation certified that Utsuro isn’t immortal; rather has a powerful mortal body. When Umibozu breaks the crystal inside his body, it actually did work; it never said it didn’t. The idea is to use Altana source from outside of Earth because the body can’t function well with another source. It’s like injecting a different blood type to a person. It treats it like a virus and Umibozu searched everywhere to create weapons with Altana use. The best part is how he builds up for the greatest discovery.
His hair is back and glorious as ever!
The transition to comedy is seamless and caught me with laughter. I was hooked to the buildup and then he went out of his way to present his newfound hair. It’s comical how Sorachi actually treats it as deus ex machina, only for useless perks. Too bad Kamui has little-to-no respect for his old man to rip off his hair like a wig. There goes his hair already; I should have foreseen its death flag.
The mood tried to bounce back to serious note with the introduction of a unique gun. The problem is it’s a gun for a hair and it takes a couple of seconds to make it grow. The reaction toward his asinine discovery is hilarious. Yorozuya keeps on pummeling him and one time, they just shove him at the enemy like a bulldozer. If anything, his weapon can truly benefit the world with bold men. Then again, I can only recall him to be the only one.
The sense of seriousness returns when he finally shows its useful perk. When Altana is combined with a weapon, it can now override the immortal body and becomes simply mortal. The cannon of his are combined with it, so he can actually kill them in one killing blow. It also helps that the particles spread around the area, so the rule still applies. Why Umibozu didn’t use it earlier is beyond me; hell, even Yorozuya has the same complaint. Thank God no one died...
He also made grenades, which Kamui got a head start of using it. The tone completely shifts to seriousness and it’s a heartwarming end to the chapter. Umibozu and Kamui have kind words to Kagura as if they finally learned their lesson from her and they want her to do what’s important to her: protect the family. They allowed themselves to stay behind and take care of endless enemy troops in order for Kagura to save Sadaharu. It’s a really nice family scene.
The best part is that Umibozu made a sword for Gintoki because he believes the way of a Samurai. What’s touching is Gintoki using the ideology of having two swords, completing the warrior status. One can be addressed as a sole protector among themselves. However, even with a new sword, he always has two swords and they can’t be broken. The family theme is nice in here. Both families have their strengths and care, and they won’t let this war break them apart.
The presentation is presented on the comical aspect. It’s hilarious on how it was building for a great reveal, only to end on a ridiculous note. It doesn’t get old to see Yorozuya beating Umibozu down. The cannon scene is a cool moment, though that was a bonus weapon rather than the hair gun. Seriously. There’s a tender moment by the end with the gentle family theme. Gintoki’s new sword looks promising. I once imagined that Altana sword could be one way to kill Utsuro and here we are.
It’s a compelling chapter with Umibozu providing the details of Altana and how to end Utsuro. The comedy is good as well with its execution and timing. The send-off leaves a good feel moment and a promising note with the new sword. The end is seriously drawing near.

Gintama 653 Review

I can already feel half of fandom being irritated by this chapter...
It is all sailor moon 5th season all over again.
Umibozu maniac face gives me life
Draw me like one of your french girls
This better be something amazing
Yes, this what we need. Break from all this pathos
Pappy you are the best
Just a little bit lower and Kamui would never had children
This is birth of Zura2
I did not realized it first but something wrong with second panel. It looks like this moment from flashback

except the problem that Kagura run to left side of Umibozu. And it was that way in all flashbacks before

The panel looks like this

but as I understood it was just Umibozu imagination hence it is wrong to the flashback. But it can not be this moment as well since clothes are different. Actually it is this moment that is just for some reason Sorachi decided redraw clothes so it would look like moment from flashback.I bet it is for trolling.
So this is it? Utsuro is going to be killed with troupe that already was used at least three times? Deep down inside you know it can not be true.
This ginkagu hint will stir fandom once again. Sorachi did not have any shame from the very beggining.

Gintama manga chaps 653 & 654
Dear Gintama gods and Sorachi-sama,
I would like to think that it's no coincidence that as soon as Umibouzu reappears with the solution to neutralizing Utsuro's Altana, the Earth's dragon pulse bursts out of control. As soon as Umibouzu started explaining the power of the non-Earth crystals and demonstrated how effective they were against the Tendoshuu zombies, I instantly had a feeling the weapon was almost too good to be true. If he is able to actually direct the Crystal Dragon Gate against Utsuro, then the Joui boys won't even need to fight him since they could just destroy him from a distance. Since I can't imagine that you would deprive us of the Final Boss Battle after building it up for so long, the only way to avoid such an anticlimactic outcome that I could think of would be if Umibouzu doesn't get to use the weapon against him at all. With the dragon pulse going haywire, I am guessing your intent is to have Umibouzu use the Crystal Dragon Gate against the Earth's dragon gate instead so that the Earth's dragon could be put back to sleep. It's obvious that Ane, Mone, Komako, and Sadaharu can no longer contain the Altana on their own, and since I refuse to think you would obliterate the inugami species by using up all their powers, it would make sense that they would need the help of the non-Earth crystals in order to succeed in their task.
The only thing I can't figure out completely is just how much Utsuro knows about the crystals and their power against him. After his encounter with Umibouzu on Rakuyou, I would imagine he'd have some inkling of what the non-Earth crystals can do to him since Umibouzu tested out a shard on him, but it's difficult to imagine that he would come up with this Earth destruction plan just to get rid of that weakness. It's almost too complicated to serve that purpose since it would not only require perfect timing that all the events would proceed like clockwork but also foreknowledge that Umibouzu would have his Crystal Dragon Gate gun created and finished in time to make such a timely appearance. Utsuro would have to have godlike abilities to be able to plan ahead to that degree and even you have to agree that would simply be too much. So I can only assume that Umibouzu's weapon will probably be a wrench in his Earth destroying plans after all, but knowing Utsuro, he'll most likely bounce back from that disappointment pretty quickly. I would fear for Umibouzu's life though; I doubt that Altana monster will be happy if Umibouzu does end up successfully saving the day with his new gun-arm.
As for the pickle that is the Hinokagutsuchi, to be honest, I'm strangely not worried about it. I know it is still hurtling toward Earth and things look very dire, but the fact that three of the Joui boys are still onboard actually gives me a little comfort since I truly doubt you will just kill them like that. I feel that Hata will indeed be the one to destroy the Death Star, but we will get a last-minute savior group appearing that will be able to transport everyone off of the vessel before that happens. I'm still waiting for the Renho to appear, and actually the recent anime episodes reminded me that Kagura's ex-boyfriend is also floating around somewhere out in space. Perhaps Dai-chan has heard of what is happening on Earth and is already on his way to help save the planet his ex is on. No matter what, I have faith that somehow, everyone on the Hinokagutsuchi will be saved after all. I mean, I can't say that it wouldn't be a completely gutsy move on your part if you decide to just let that thing destroy Earth anyway and end the series in such a shockingly blunt and brutal manner, and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if in your more frustrated moments you have probably entertained such a conclusion, but I'd also like to think you at least like us poor readers enough to not destroy our hearts and souls like that. Or even if you didn’t want to do it for us, you'd do it for the number of years you've devoted to Gintama, so hopefully, such an ending will only stay in your darkest fantasies and never be made into a reality.
Last but not least, since it was a quick exchange between Yato father and son, I didn't want to put too much credence in it, especially since Umibouzu essentially shot down the notion, but for the record, if you do decide to one day canonize Gintoki and Kagura (when she's older) as a couple, I cannot say that I would completely object only because I love both of them so much. Their pair-up would of course destroy all my long-cherished OTPs involving the two of them, and I will feel sad about that for sure, but again, because it is the two of them, I will manage to overcome my disappointment eventually and be able to be happy for them. They have never been the ship I was on or prefer, but I do admit they are more than worthy of each other and actually, if I really think about it, I can completely understand how Kagura could grow to see Gintoki as more than a guardian: childhood admiration and affection can reasonably and naturally blossom into adulthood love and attachment. I think the harder sell would be Gintoki and his feelings toward her since it might take a lot more for him to see her as anything but his ward. You would either have to spend more time nurturing that relationship or do a dramatic time skip and just have us fill in the missing years using our own imaginations. Since I don't want the series to end, of course you know my choice would be the first option. But ultimately, it can be done, and I would be on board. Honestly, I would be willing to jump on board even if you were to pair up Kagura and Shinpachi (or Gintoki and Shinpachi). The bond between these three are so strong, I can definitely accept the alternate possibilities that will allow them to further cement their bond.
Finally, please spare our beloved Sadaharu and tiny compact-sized Komako.
Yours truly,
A silly fangirl with yaoi dreams
(^3^)
