This is the first page of my project about the fast fashion industry and its impacts. i wanted this board to celebrate thrifted and up-cycled clothing while using my illustration to hint at the suffering and negative impacts that are caused by fast fashion and hidden away by the companies behind it.

Design ideas and inspiration. i was heavily inspired by southpawcathy and the way she uses thrifted clothing to create new items as well as her signature loose silhouette that i think fits with the layers of clothes and shapes that are seen in landfills full of waste clothing. i made my illustrations throughout this project more dark and twisted to try and show the negative impacts fast fashion has on workers e.g the Rana plaza building collapse.

My final design of my project on fast fashion and its impacts, i wanted to use only recycled fabric and materials to create a cropped and printed hoodie with a layered and gathered train, and a pair of jeans with printed patchwork and turn ups. i wanted a bright colour palette using pastel pinks and blues to show a more colourful and fun side to up-cycled clothing.

This is a board of inspiration and fabric samples for my theme and design. i used an illustration of one of the design ideas, a printed fabric sample and a ruffle using fabric i wanted to use in the final outfit. Layered with the pattern design that i made inspired from the shapes of clothes in landfill and the spank logo as its an up-cycling brand that also inspired me.

This a sample i made white experimenting with different fabrics and mediums to see which method and materials i would be best using on the final garment. First i watered down sublimation inks on paper to create the watercolor effect on the fabric, then printed the illustration i wanted on the final patch over the top using lino.

This was the board of inspiration for my magazine cover I wanted to focus on Soen Magazine because their covers are always bold and full of colour which is what i was trying to achieve in my project. i was also inspired by street photography from publications like FRUiTS and TokyoFashion.com where the poses are minimal, keeping the focus on the clothes. i collaged this together using a screen print of the design added to my final jeans on both card and acetate.

To create the magazine cover i used Adobe Photoshop to brighten and increase the contrast of my image before adding the Soen Magazine logo, i used the paint tool to create text that would mirror the specific Soen cover that i felt was the most effective and eye catching.

The jeans themselves were recycled and the patches i made using fabric from an old nightgown, to print on the patches i used sublimation dye on paper transferred through the heat press, i used this same technique to print on the cuffs i made. For the patch i then screen printed one of my illustrations over the top of the pattern.

For the train i used two shades of pink fabric that was tightly gathered and fell to just below the knee. To print my design on the hood and patch i used sublimation ink on paper and transferred it to my fabric using the heat press, the patch was then hand stitched onto the front using thick embroidery thread. All fabric used throughout this project was salvaged from existing clothing and reused.

This is a mood board on our year 1 project ‘Queering Gender’. For my inspiration i wanted to focus on how fashion in general is moving towards more androgynous looks and collections, while also looking at performance artists and public speakers within the LGBT+ community who express their message through fashion such as Jacob Tobia and  Travis Alabanza.

For my final design i created a form fitting waistcoat with a long, layered neon pink tulle train paired with above the knee shorts. i added pink accents around the sleeves and made badges to decorate it using typically feminine things like sequins, glitter and a tampon. i wanted to use aspects from both runway and the more kitschy style of people like Alok Vaid Menon.

For our live brief in our first year we had to create an outfit inspired by a decade and a colour, i was given 90s and green. Immediately i wanted to do something Riot Grrrl inspired as the movement and other powerful women within punk and grunge is what stands out to me when i think of the 90s. For this mood board i used photos of the bands Bikini Kill and Bratmobile as well as added initial fabric ideas and lyrics by Hole. i thought dark or muddy shades of green would work well with this theme.

final design illustration page for the project. i decided on an over sized green denim jacket, a dark green tartan bandeau top and a matching handkerchief skirt. The denim jacket would have patches and feature a large back patch that says “every girl is a riot girl”. For my illustration i used ballpoint pen, watercolour and copic markers.

this is a board i made using two of the fabrics i wanted to use in my final garments, i chose a dark green to reflect the grunge and punk style that was extremely prevalent within the underground scene in the 90s, as well as brighter crushed velvet to reflect the feminine side. To show some of my though process in choosing these fabrics i used a photo of Kathleen Hanna wearing a similar fabric during a Bikini Kill live show and a photo of Courtney Love, who had a much softer and more glamorous look
