#Ghostbur isn't real AU

Right. So, c!Wilbur and Ghostbur.

The thing about c!Wilbur is that he's not trying to be the bad guy. He is deliberately trying to set himself up as a hero. And the way he does it makes him an asshole, and it's manipulative as hell--but I don't think that it's evil.

The thing about the Blade System AU c!Wilbur is that he grew up with Blades. He was raised by c!Philza the Aegis, with visits from c!Techno the Heartstealer. He gets the way the Blade System goes right--but also the way it can go very badly wrong. Blades are a lot more powerful than players--but the way their lives work means that Blades are always going to be the underclass.

So the first thing he does when he gets to the dsmp is to check and see if the local Blade in charge of the server will get upset with him. This check fails for several reasons--the server creator, Aegis!Dream, has been shattered, the server owner's Blade, Drista, is just in it for the chaos, and the Blade currently in charge of the server (as much as that applies) is c!Dream, who is hiding that he's a Blade.

That makes the server free real estate, yeah? So he creates L'Manberg; partially because he wants to, and partially because it'll fuck with Dream. And since there's no Blade in charge, he's fully within his rights to say that it is separate from the rest of the server. After all, if the Blades don't say it's not a factional server, then he's fully capable of making it one.

At this point, if c!Dream or c!Punz had come forward and said "I'm a Blade of this server and what you're doing is distressing, I don't want factions," then Wilbur would have listened. He's trying to build a narrative of being a good guy helping the underdogs, and the Blade System is something he is theoretically rebelling against. In fact, one of the subtle differences with this AU is that L'Manberg basically has rules about Blades built in--and those rules explicitly give them the right to be equal citizens. They say that anyone harming or killing a Blade, even if they are the Driver, would be treated the same way as permanently killing someone--a very real, serious murder charge. It even extends that justice towards the rest of the dsmp--which is one of the many overreaches that annoys Dream enough that it builds towards starting the war.

Which is all very well and good, but Dream and Punz don't trust that. In order for those rules to apply, they're have to out that they're Blades, and they really, really aren't going to do that. Purpled has also lived his entire life under this secrecy, so he's not going to tell (also it would require... talking to other people, and Purpled doesn't really do that). c!George is also not willing to tell--Dream is incredibly private about their Resonance and George understands that--also, Wilbur is annoying him.

Ironically enough, Wilbur would probably be the mostly likely to spot Dream and Punz out on being Blades--but Dream is basically stonewalling him as soon as L'Manberg starts, so Wilbur doesn't really get to see Dream's normal behaviors to get a good read. Punz is following Dream's lead in this. Wilbur also isn't looking to find them out as Blades; his suspicions about Dream are that he's some type of long-lived eldritch hybrid, and they only grow worse and more paranoid during the eventual Pogtopia breakdown.

Pogtopia goes pretty much the same. Wilbur does take the fact that c!Schlatt is able to go wild with Manberg as proof that there isn't really a Blade in charge of the server. At some point, post TNT and pre-detonation, Wilbur's mental state is unstable enough that he probably would consider killing a Blade to become their Driver (as per Dream's worst fears/nightmares) but it is only a possibility. I's say 50/50 will he-won't he, but it's never put to the test because the question never comes up--Wilbur dies never knowing about any of the Blades on the server.

Ghostbur is a thing, but the reason why he's a thing is different from canon. See, between Kristen being the Goddess of Death and Philza being a magic computer with a hologram body, Wilbur is not their biological son--so to extra powers from there.

The three lives system is a sign of the Egg's corruption--when Aegis!Dream and DreamXD created the server, they did so with an infinite lives system.

Ghosts are created because the Entity basically put a barricade up between life and death (this is limbo), so that it could steal the power from the souls that ended up there to help power it's Eldritch nature/abilities. Ghosts are echoes of the souls that end up in limbo. They are fragmentary and incomplete compared to the person that died because the Entity yoinked most of the soul. Unfortunately for Wilbur, the first L'Manberg War, plus the increased amount of Blades on the server woke up the Egg, and it re-instated the Entity's barricade shortly before the elections. It's eldritch nature meant it could retroactively apply the lives system to the L'Manberg War.

Theoretically, if the Egg is no longer using the soul, it can resurrect the soul in a body that is already corrupted by it. The Egg doesn't really do that in any major confrontation, because Wilbur is kind of stickly/bad at fighting, and is much more useful as a power source. It's better to keep his soul as a battery for an escape attempt rather than tossing another meat shield into the fray (when he's going to get shredded by the Blades going at it anyway).

I'm going to say that c!Vikkstar was the Blade and c!LazarBeam was the Driver, which means that technically the Egg has LazarBeam's soul too. But let's be real, if the Egg tries to revive LazarBeam to stop Techno and Phil, it's be like trying to stop a volcano with a piece of paper. So he also gets battery status.

The resurrection ritual left by Aegis!Dream and the Resurrection arte that Dream can use both cleanse the soul of the Egg's corruption.

Ghostbur ends of finding out who all the Blades on the server are, including Punz. Ghostbur finds out about Punz pre-Staged finale, and Punz ends of guilt-tripping Ghostbur into not telling anyone with the excuse that it'll make Punz really sad if other people know, and Punz might just go away forever. Ghostbur does not figure out that c!Purpled is Punz's Driver.

Ghostbur finds out about Dream being a Blade after the rest of the server does. Tommy tells him, after coming back from the Staged Finale. Ghostbur specifically ends up getting told because Tommy is talking at him as a way to try and verbally process the mess of feelings that happened when Tommy found out Dream was a Blade. It doesn't help.

Fast forward to post-Staged Finale. Ghostbur does not die, Wilbur does not get revived (yet). I'd argue that most of the reason Wilbur got revived when he did in canon was down to Dream's desperation about the situation--both the assassination attempt, and the ongoing, devolving situation in Pandora's Vault.

In this AU, Dream is not stuck in Pandora's Vault. He is with Punz, continuing their experiments on the far outskirts of the server. Ghostbur never really has a chance to find or interrupt them.

Furthermore, while Dream and Punz are going for an everbody-is-alive-and-immortal ending, that is very much Phase 2. They are still on Phase 1, fixing the Blade memory issue. The rest of the server are all quietly panicking in the Cold War where the main deterrent is that nobody knows where Dream's core crystal is/who has it. Reviving Wilbur into that kind of situation would be like tossing a bowling ball at a house of cards.

And even if Dream might be willing to risk it, Punz is also working on the Plan. And Punz doesn't like Wilbur. Doesn't like the way he upset Dream, doesn't like the way he started factionalism and governments on the server. Dream wants the server to be one big Happy Family? Sure. But Wilbur gets revived last, at the end, just before the reset. And since Punz is currently acting as Dream's Driver, that does influence Dream's behavior a bit as well.

I do think Wilbur would get revived eventually. During Dream's Syndicate Arc, he ends up spending a lot of time with c!Niki and Phil. Niki, who still wear's Wilbur's old coat and Phil who is still in mourning. Wilbur's revival would be after the rest of the plot/character arcs have been sorted out. Dream probably brings up the ability to Resurrect people as part of everyone sitting on Dream and Punz to make them explain The Plan.

sorry Stella !!!!! I wanted to post the designs first, but now since theyre up, i can talk a bit!! I haven't thought of everything yet, but here are bits im almost 100% sure of:

As you can see in Dream's design, he doesn't have a cutie mark. That's because I wanted to combine the Admin au/headcanon with the mlp one. The idea behind this is that his purpose in life is to protect the land and maintain peace and harmony. Since the second that more than 10 people decide to stay there quarells start to happen, he does not receive his mark as he has not completed the task of menaging peace (or something pleasei hope it makes sense)

Dream is not an alicorn but just a pegasus. When more conflicts start to pop up (middle of L'manburg war for independence i'd say) he decided to look into magic anyway, in hopes of finding whatever possible to help him- maybe artefacts or non unicorn magic based things (like Zecora's witchcraft ? is this the right way to name it?) After getting the Revive Book he studies it too. At that point in time, the land itself, which has some kind of... mind? sentience? idk, grants Dream the gift of a horn for all his struggles ( a) he's the singular guardian b) he has studied a shit ton) not sure in which way i want this to go, but here are notes: -Dream after gaining his horn may try to hide it using invisibility, shapeshifting or illusion spells. No one knows what other can use against him, so hes better off not parading around with a clear show of importance (+ its pogtopia era when he gains it, so he may want to stay low idk man) -we know that in the show, alicorn change their phisique by becoming larger with time. So maybe after like a year after gaining his new status, Dream starts shifting from an average height pony into a taller one (ex. Princess Cadance or Luna after redesign) no idea what this could be used for, but just thoring it out there

4. From the explosion on the 16th, Wilbur's wings break. The state of his body carries over to Ghostbur, who can still levitate, but isn't capable of moving his wings properly. Though after his revival, Wilbur comes with his wings fully intact. They've been healed since they were damaged very close in time to his death and revival is a bit like respawn- he just needs to rehabilitate and relearn how to fly again. (is this a set up for hurt/comfort? : - ) who knows)

“C’mon, Ghostbur.” Tommy chuckled lightly. It was his, what, 16th day in Logsted? It was hard to tell the days when you were so alone. All he had to console him was Ghostbur and the Prime Log. The campsite had been coming along fine, and he had even started a farm. Not for long though, he was still going back. Though he would never admit it, he was forever thankful that Ghostbur had decided to tag along. He was almost 100% sure he would have gone crazy if it were just him on the island. 

“I’m coming, Tommy!” He heard Ghostbur reply. They were almost finished building the campsite. Tommy didn’t want to brag, but for a temporary “vacation home” -as Ghostbur liked to call it- it was pretty nice. Pretty poggers, if you will. He had built up quite a bit of muscle chopping down trees every day, and he couldn’t wait to show everyone when he went back. If he went back. It was hard work, but it was worth it. Plus, it gave him something other to do than just sitting and talking to Ghostbur.

It had started off as a normal day when it had happened. Tommy was just idly going through his farm while Ghostbur was out picking flowers when he heard the ever-familiar monotone voice call out to him. “So,” Technoblade said to him, “This is where government has gotten you.”

“Fuck off, Technoblade,” Tommy muttered tiredly. He knew he should be more “enthusiastic”, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care. Techno would come taunt him then leave, and he and Ghostbur would just continue on.

“What, no clever quip? I thought you would be more starved for human interaction, considering where you are.” Techno smirked. Tommy bristled a bit at that. Human interaction? Did no one tell Techno that Ghostbur had followed him? Tommy decided that Techno was probably just referring to how Ghostbur was, well, a ghost. He didn’t need “human” interaction, though. He would get enough of it if when he went back.

“I’m perfectly fine on company, thanks,” Tommy replied dryly. He really wished Techno would go away already. He hadn’t even looked up from his farm yet, hoping that if he ignored the Pig, he would just get the memo and leave Tommy alone. Alas, Techno wasn’t known for his knowledge of social cues.

“Has someone already come and visited you?” Techno asked, his voice casual. Too causally Tommy’s brain supplied, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care. He just wanted to be alone, with Ghostbur of course.

“No, but Ghostbur’s still here,” Tommy said, a bit irritated, as he gestured to where Ghostbur was, picking flowers. There was a slight pause, and a small part of Tommy hoped that Techno had taken the time to leave. 

“Who’s Ghostbur?” no such luck then. Tommy finally looked up a Techno, raising an eyebrow at him. He gestured again to Ghostbur, who waved back to him. Techno’s face had gone the slightest bit paler, but it was hard to tell.

“Ghostbur. Y’know, Wilbur’s ghost. After Wilbur died, he came back as a ghost. Hence, Ghostbur.” Tommy explained slowly as if talking to a child. Maybe Techno just hadn’t met Ghostbur yet? He had left before Ghostbur had shown up after all. It didn’t make sense though. Techno was their brother. Ghostbur would’ve gone to see him.

“Tommy,” Techno started, but his voice sounded a tiny bit strained. “Wilbur never came back as a ghost.” Tommy just stared at him incredulously. That solved it then. Techno just never met Ghostbur. 

“Can you come here Ghostbur?” Tommy yelled out to him, ignoring the look that Techno gave him. He saw Ghostbur nod, and gently glide over to them. “Ghostbur, this is Techno. He used to be our brother.” Tommy introduced him, speaking directly at Ghostbur.

“Hi Techno, I’m Ghostbur!” he heard Ghostbur say, but Techno was still just staring at him, a sad look in his eyes. Tommy grew a bit irritated, seeing how Techno wasn’t even responding to Ghostbur.

“Hello?” he called angrily. “Don’t you have enough decency to respond to him??” Techno just looked at him, eyes seemingly searching for something. 

“Tommy, there’s no one there,” Techno said slowly, his voice the slightest bit sad. Tommy turned to look him, eyes wide and confused. Maybe Techno just couldn’t see ghosts? That wouldn’t make sense though, everyone else on the SMP could see Ghostbur unless they were lying to him. 

“Um, yeah? He’s right there, you idiot.” Tommy replied steadily, but his voice was tinged with desperation. Of course, Ghostbur was real. He...Wilbur had come back to make amends with Tommy.  Ghostbur was always there for him, talking with him before the exile and sticking with him afterward. He never hit him like Wilbur did. Ghostbur was like Wilbur, but before all the L’manberg shit had gone down. Ghostbur was real. Tommy needed him to be.

Techno took a small step forward. Tommy leaned back. They stared at each other for a bit, almost daring the other one to make a move. Tommy could see Ghostbur in the corner of his eye, but for some reason, he had been flickering, almost like a candle. Tommy’s eyes widened, and he turned to look at Ghostbur fully. This was not happening. 

“Ghostbur,” Tommy whispered, almost too scared of the words coming out of his mouth. “Are you….are you real?” Ghostbur just looked at him, a small, sad smile on his face. No. No. No no no no no no no. this can’t be real. Ghostbur was there right in front of him! He was the only thing keeping Tommy from- oh. Keeping Tommy from going insane. But if that meant that Ghostbur wasn’t real, was Tommy...was Tommy actually crazy? Tears began to blur Tommy’s vision, his chest rising and falling more heavily as he struggled to get a breath in. Tommy couldn’t be crazy! He wasn’t insane! He thought back to all the times he had mentioned Ghostbur, and the other SMP members had just nodded along. Were they all just playing along with him? 

He clutched Wilbur’s old coat closer to himself. He remembered Ghostbur showing him where the coat was, telling him how Wilbur had left it for Tommy as a final goodbye. Was it just his consciousness showing him where it was? His fingers scratched against the old L’Manberg flag patch that Niki had sown onto the jacket for Wilbur. Had she known that Ghostbur wasn’t real? Every time he would go over to the bakery, grabbing an extra pastry for Ghostbur as Niki stared along with sad eyes, had she known? And Tubbo. Oh my god, Tubbo. Had he known? How would he have felt, having to watch Tommy deteriorate like this.

He suddenly felt warm arms wrap around him. Oh right, Techno was there. He knew he shouldn’t be taking comfort in someone who had betrayed him, but he honestly did not care right now. Techno was still his brother, no matter how hard he tried to deny it, and he really just needed some brotherly love. After all, he had just found out that his other brother wasn’t here. 

He sobbed into Techno’s shirt, not caring about all the tears he was rubbing onto his cape.

“It’s okay Tommy. You’re okay. You’re not insane.” Techno whispered to him, rubbing comforting circles on his back. Tommy’s sobs had turned into sniffles, and eventually, he fell into the sweet embrace of sleep.

screaming this into thin air and then going to bed but. tntduo au where Quackity and Wilbur are casual urban explorers. except one them died years before the other in one of many abandoned buildings, and now the first time they meet is when Quackity's out exploring and Wilbur's ghost appears in front of him.

apparently his name is Ghostbur, and he's all sunshowers and bittersweet symphonies and has a surprisingly good sense of humour for someone so timid. and Quackity's immediately obsessed because holy shit a ghost appeared to him, and now he has to drive out to visit every week or they'll both die (again x1) out of fucking loneliness.

then one week Ghostbur isn't there. there's footprints in the dust and an eerie sense of silence but there's no recognizable sign of a spirit. until he hears a stifled cough and finds a man– a very real, tangible, scattered looking man– hiding around the corner, with a face that looks exactly like the one of his ghostly friend. and Quackity is now faced with the reality that not only do corpses come back from the dead, but Wilbur Soot is not at all the man his ghost was.

*kicks down your door for the 5th time this month* I HAVE AN AU IDEA THAT I THOUGHT TOO HARD ABOUT BUT DONT HAVE THE ENERGY TO FULLY FLESH OUT SO HAVE FULLMETAL FUNDY

Fundy is 11 years old living with his father Wilbur and mother Sally, next door to the quiet and kinda creepy automail specialist Sam and his apprentice Tubbo.

One day, Sally falls ill. Wil and Fundy try their best to heal her with what little alkahestry Wil had learned from his travels. Their attempts were in vain and Sally passes away. Fundy isn't ready to accept it, and goes into his own studies on Alchemy to try to bring her back to life, and as hesitant as Wilbur is to endorse this, the least he figures he can do is make sure his son doesn't hurt himself doing this.

The day of resurrection comes and surprise surprise, everything goes to shit. Fundy loses his leg and father only to bring back a husk that looks nothing like his mother. Desperate not to be alone, Fundy makes a blood seal on a piece of armor abandoned in the basement and binds Wilbur's soul to it, sacrificing his arm.

Now it's son boy Fundy with two automail limbs and his walking tin can of a father traversing the world trying to restore their bodies.

A bit more characters and stuff that I came up with:

Phil is the Hohenheim equivalent but only kinda. He's from the kingdom of Xerxes (which could be winged people 👀) and holds half of the population in his body.

Dream is Father or the Dreamon in the Flask. Got the other half of Xerxes in him. Drwm thinks of himself as god thus strives to become one in actuality.

Phil gets around and builds a small family around him from children he found on the side of the road and adopted to join him on his journeys.

The first was Techno, a small, 5 y/o Ishvalan child left alone in the wreckage of his homeland.

The second was Wilbur, a young, 7 y/o boy with nothing but a alchemically created guitar to his name and a home within an old, unused sewer drain that dumped onto the sea.

The third was Tommy, a rambunctious 6 y/o who tried to steal food that Techno had bought for dinner and almost got his tiny mouth kicked in before Phil stepped in.

Fourth was Tubbo. He was in a box. Nuf said.

One day, Phil disappeared. They all went to bed in the inn they were staying at, but come morning, it was just the brothers there.

The brothers splintered off at that point, all lost and trying to find out what to do without Phil any more. They'd always keep contact with each other though.

Techno took Tommy and Tubbo initially, being the oldest and strongest of the four and capable of protecting the still teenaged and trouble prone members of their family.

Wilbur set off on his own. Traveled many places such as Xing and the ruins of his father's homeland, singing songs to get by. Eventually he met Sally and they made a life in Risembool.

Tubbo took up his apprenticeship with Sam after one of their visits to Wilbur to see their nephew.

Fundy is extremely good at alchemy, surpassing his father relatively quickly.

Schlatt is kinda the Roy stand in. He comes by Wilbur's residence looking for Phil only to find a suit of armor and a traumatized kid. Best solution: offer the kid a job.

A side effect of the soul binding(not based in fma canon but it's angsty) is that Wil's memory is deteriorating. Nobody notices at first, but soon enough, Wil can't remember what Sally looked like. How her voice sounded. Then he can't remember her at all and he knows he's missing something. Suddenly, he thinks he hasn't seen Fundy in weeks. Who's Schlatt? How old is Tommy again? Anxietyyyyyy

Schlatt's team is Quackity, Niki, Eret, Ranboo, and Fundy.

I don't have many ideas on homunculi. All I got is Sapnap as Wrath, and George as Sloth. Of couse, don't make Sapnap the head of the government for all that is holy but I haven't thought about this thread enough to have a real idea of how this would go down. Basically: idk who is gonna be who in terms of homunculi

Maybe Techno can be like Scar and murder goverment officials, not just state alchemists. As a treat.

S'all I got man but I'm a huge fan of fma and just fundy saying that he was gonna go watch fma as research on how to resurrect ghostbur was too good for me not to run with it.

hello, hello, its protege anon with some more random details that people can use for a protege au or anything else tbh.

i mentioned that blank is pretty quiet with practically everyone (near mute) but he actually talks a lot with henry. like henry the cow is the only living thing that probably hears blank/tommy's voice every day while blank is working under dream.

blank thinks ranboo is weird because there's SOMETHING up with him and ranboo but blank isn't sure what it is.

the community house never gets blown up as dream has no need to destroy it to frame tommy. instead it actually get built up into a tower that he uses as a base of operations. sort of; its not his main one. that's what the attachment vault is for.

blank's primary duties when he isn't following dream around is actually to protect the attachment vault. its part of the reason why he always goes back to it in all the ends... its like the one thing he can still do.

punz actually turns on dream because he knows there's something wrong with him and blank's friendship or whatever. its part of the reason he leads everyone to the attachment fault after dream is jailed.

tubbo and the other lmanburg members are actually fairly freaked out by blank because he's mute and just... follows dream's orders without question. tubbo actually gets angry about it and starts working on the butcher army more because he wants to take dream down because a) dream got tommy killed and b) he's not letting dream (and blank) kill the rest of his friends.

literally the only thing that would make blank turn on dream is if he tried to kill tubbo. oh he hurt tubbo? well that's okay because he can heal! but if he dies blank will be throwing hands.

the egg is still a thing! but it actually has less of an effect on the server because the badlands are too busy dealing with the fall out of dream and blank to give the egg much attention. uh oops?

uuuh in a sbi family dynamic au for this, tommy/blank would be partially conditioned by dream via preenings. months in exile without getting them and then being rewarded whenever he does exactly what dream wants can rlly screw with someone's head.

also because i am big loser, i like the idea that tommy is only related to philza even in a sbi fd is by being a clone. i like the clone au dkjf its funny AND sad. multifaceted.

sbi fd is prtty bad in this au because blank has gotten to the point that he despises phila on principle, will tolerate technoblade (who is either a brother or Weird Uncle) for dream, or slightly murderous in wilbur's case. you know, until wilbur gets revived and blank gets metaphorically slapped in the face with the fact that blank is currently worse off mentally than wilbur was when he died.

which is a Big Yikes.

... wilbur would actually not like dream at all. between his memories from ghostbur and the Very Real vision of tommy being twisted into blank, he's uh. not very willing to see dream as a hero. that's an all versions where he gets revived detail too.

Thinking about a fic where Tommy and Tubbo finally confront Dream in the final battle, but they weren't prepared enough and die rather slowly, they glance at eachother from across the battle field, Tommy can hear his name being called, but its too late, and he slipped away...to where Tommy simply wakes up on the bench from where he supposedly fell asleep with Tubbo, Tubbo isn't wearing his presidential suit, he turns around frantically to see Fundy, Ghostbur, and Quackity building houses over a crater a much smaller crater, one filled with water and life, nothing like the crater that WAS there But Tubbo has...horns?! What the HELL is going on (Weird au in which Tommy wakes up in a dimension where Techno is the real villan, but past Tommy is convinced its still Dream)
