4,600 sounds too much for an apartment. How the hell would maddie and tom been able to afford that.

I know that this sounds a bit strange, but that’s about right for a monthly cost in San Francisco. $4,600 USA Dollars per month for a two bedroom apartment, 1.5 bath, and 750-1,000sq foot apartment seems to be the median range for pricing.

Now, apartment/flats are very hard to come by in the San Francisco, California area. San Francisco has very limited space for a family—or a single person—to buy. It’s always very hard to find one, it would be like finding an apartment (or even a row-house or a studio flat) in Manhattan or in London, both places are very limited on living space due to having to fit within a city. In an apartment, you are given the fees for items, such as gas and water, electricity, access to a pool/gym if the complex provides it, the cost for them to take your trash and compose it, repairs, office space if that’s provided as well, location, and other benefits/essentials provided. There’s also a down payment that needs to be paid first, then you get a monthly bill.

We also need to take into consideration of how much each person gets paid per job. Supposedly, there’s an “equal pay” in America, but you and I both know, that’s not true. ((Source)).

Unfortunately, not everyone gets the accurate amount of pay. It does not matter the experience, nor years in field, everyone does not get the pay that they deserve. This is not okay. I have no problem talking about American economics and pay here. If you think this is wrong, challenge me. I have no problem providing facts and data to my arguments.

Anyways, we don’t know how long Maddie has been a veterinarian. We just know that Maddie is a well-respected vet in Green Hills. The same logic applies for Tom. The years spent for Tom’s job as a sheriff is undetermined. There isn’t an age, for the two of them to get a rough idea of it. We just know that they’ve had their careers for a while. We can factor out the “starting career salary” for both of them. For the sake of this argument, we will also make the problem solving here generic pay—one where there isn’t that disgusting division in pay.

A vet in Montana makes about $76,000 USA dollars a year with the work that they do. That’s a lot for a small town in the mountains... then again, there are lots of farm animals and horses are always in need of attention. If Maddie were to get a job in San Francisco, she’s make about $10,000 more than that annually. A monthly paycheck would be between $7,000 to $8,000. She could afford the apartment and the luxury’s, as well as other expenses that she would like to have, such as Internet and cellphone services. ((Source)).

A sheriff deputy in Montana makes about $45,000 USA Dollars annually. With the town that The Wachowski’s live in, it might be a tad less. Not a lot, but a small change. If Tom were to get his dream job in San Francisco, he’d take home a $10,000 raise like Maddie did. Figuring in monthly costs for Tom’s job, Tom would be scrapping but. His monthly income would barely be $4,700 USA Dollars. He would just be able to afford rent, no luxuries and no dining out with friends. ((Source)).

With this in mind, the two would have to pay the rent together in San Francisco. They could afford it together with their combined incomes, yes, but Maddie would be the main provider if the two really wanted to stay in that apartment. We don’t even know if they would keep their own vehicles if they moved to San Francisco, they might just want to public transportation instead of worrying about that being added to their monthly bills.

I know that this sounds like scary adult stuff... and lots of math. (Stupid math, I don’t like math). However, the short answer is that they could afford it, but they’d have several changes in their lifestyle, and even more if Sonic went to live with the two in San Francisco.

The History of the Bike Lane

The fight to get road space for cyclists began with building pavement outside of cities. More recently, designated bike lanes prove to be safest.

 Bicycling is, unfortunately, the source of contentiousness insofar as who gets to use the roads. For some reason, motorists resent human-powered two-wheelers as much as the cyclists are none too pleased with close brush-bys or worse from cars, trucks, and buses.

 This is as true today – even as cities install bike lanes – as it was in the 19th century when bicycles were first invented.

 Over this time, virtually all forms of transportation (horses, bikes, cars, trucks and now scooters) had surprising advocates and adversaries.

 When the first bicycle with pedals was patented, in 1866, pavement was pretty rare. Macadam asphalt, invented in the 1820s, was not widespread, nor was asphalt contractors. Urban areas had their cobblestones and, sometimes, wood block pavers, but bicyclists wanted to go out into the country where rutted mud roads were the best they could expect. No concrete or asphalt was to be found where the best scenery was.

 As it was, bicycles preceded motorcars by several decades. It helped that the first bicycle enthusiasts were well-to-do. So they organized. Local groups formed, pressing for public access in cities (police otherwise forced them off streets), which evolved into a national coalition known as the League of American Wheelmen (LAW). Among its membership at the turn of the century (1900) were John Jacob Astor and John D. Rockefeller.

 This organization exists today under the gender-neutral name, League of American Bicyclists (LAB), and operates with a $2 million budget and 14 staffers. LAB is part of a larger coalition known as PeopleForBikes, which lobbies for bike lanes.

 Going back to bicycling’s origins, a surprising partnership the bicyclists were able to forge in pushing for better roads was with farmers. The agricultural community initially read bicycling as a worthless hobby, a dalliance outside their interests. But when the two-wheel enthusiasts demonstrated that better roads for bikes meant better roads for loaded wagons of hay and corn, the farmers realized that pavement improved their economics: fewer horses were needed and faster transport meant less time required getting to markets. Together, they lobbied Congress to create the Office of Road Inquiry, which ultimately became the Federal Highway Administration.

 Still, the need for dedicated bike lanes was recognized even in the 1890s, when Brooklyn’s (New York City) Ocean Parkway was built, a 5.5-mile bikes-only track that terminated at Coney Island. This led to a “sidepath” movement a few years later, which would have created protected bike lanes on all major streets nationwide; alas funding never materialized for it. By 1908 the affordability of the Ford Model T sank the bike movement for decades. It wasn’t until 1967 that Davis, California installed what was America’s first painted bike lanes, copying what was more commonplace in Europe.

 In 1968, the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic recognized bicycles as vehicles, a definition that led to much more global acceptance of bikes and bike infrastructure. By 1999, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) issued its first guidelines for creating bike-friendly streets. Six years later, researchers at the University of Texas/Austin identified how painting bike lanes on streets ensures greater safety; a few years later, research in Montreal identified that protected bike lanes (with physical separations from car lanes) reduce the risk of injury even further. By that time New York City was systematically installing protected bike lanes. When an entire lane in Brooklyn was removed from car usage and dedicated to bicycles, weekday bike commuting tripled.

 According to the PeopleForBikes website, the most recent figures reflect 550 miles of protected bike lanes in 124 cities in the US. While there are many more miles of painted bike lanes, which lack barriers and bollards for protection, the protected lanes are found to significantly increase safety and, as a result, overall use.

  None of this would be of worth, of course, if the roads were rough, rutted, and potholed. Asphalt and concrete pavement is essential to safe biking – as bicyclists knew well over 100 years ago.

Join me in Portugal for a one-week chautauqua about money and life!

In 2013, I traveled to Ecuador for a sort of experiment. Host Cheryl Reed and mastermind Jim (J.L.) Collins had organized a chautauqua, a gathering of two dozen folks who wanted to discuss financial independence, early retirement, and finding purpose. My pal Pete Adeney (better known as Mr. Money Mustache) and I joined Jim and Cheryl as presenters. We spent a week at a centuries-old hacienda talking about money and life.

That first chautauqua was awesome not only for the attendee but for us presenters as well. To this day, those of us who attended that first chautauqua go out of our way to see each other as we travel the U.S. When I did my short tour of the Southeast last spring, for instance, I stopped in Kentucky to watch horse races with Amy, whom I met at that first event in Ecuador. In 2014, I returned to Ecuador to present at my second chautauqua. This time, my co-presenter was David Cain, the deep thinker behind Raptitude. (If you've never read it, Raptitude is perhaps the best blog on the internet. It's all about getting better at being human.) In 2016, David and I returned for yet another Ecuador chautauqua. This time, we were joined by Leo Babauta from Zen Habits. Once again, the experience was incredible. This group bonded as a family warts and all more than any chautauqua before or since. We bonded so much, in fact, that most of us came together for a reunion in Salt Lake City this past November. We have an ongoing group video chat where we're in constant communication, and we hope to get together often in the future.

Chautauqua 2019 As you might have guessed, all of this is prelude to an announcement: I'm pleased to report that I'll be returning as a speaker for Chautauqua 2019. From September 28th to October 5th, I'll be in Portugal's Douro Valley presenting on leading a purpose-filled life. It's not just me, of course. Other presenters include founder Jim Collins, Kristy and Bryce from Millennial Revolution, and Alan Donegan, founder of PopUp Business School. And it's not just this week. There are three additional European chautauqua to choose form this year. For new readers, this whole idea might seem a little strange. A bunch of people get together in a foreign country to talk about money? Are the speakers selling time shares? Is this some sort of scam? No, it's not a scam. No, we're not selling time shares. No, this isn't some ploy to get blog readers to pay for fancy vacations. These events are just what I've said: A chance for like-minded folks to get together to explore financial independence, early retirement, and living with purpose. In our day-to-day lives, it can be tough to find people who relate to our dreams of early retirement and financial independence. At the chautauquas, those dreams are the norm. Last I heard, there were only a few tickets left.Although it's not official, Mr. Money Mustache and I have been kicking around the idea of hosting a chautauqua in Ecuador in 2020 possibly with David Cain from Raptitude. It's unlikely we'll make a decision for many months yet, but keep it in mind.Finally, don't overlook the weekend-long Camp FI and Camp Mustache events held across the United States and Canada. These retreats are larger than the chautauquas (50-80 people attend) and much more casual. They're also much cheaper. I've been to several in the past two years. Utah event celebrates Transcontinental Railroad anniversary

Music, bells and cannon fire rang out Friday at a remote spot in the Utah desert where the final spikes of the Transcontinental Railroad were hammered 150 years ago, uniting a nation long separated by vast expanses of desert, mountains and forests and fresh off the Civil War.

An estimated 20,000 people swarmed to the celebration at Golden Spike National Historic Park northwest of Salt Lake City — the signature event of several days of festivities marking the railroad’s anniversary. Visitors came from as far as China, many decked out in old-fashioned dresses, top hats, bonnets and scarves.

The 1869 completion of the 1,800-mile (2,900 kilometer) rail line shortened cross-county travel from as long as six months in wagons and stagecoaches to about 10 days on the rails and served as a unifying moment for the nation. It became a pivotal moment in United States history that dramatically changed how people traveled and did business.

“It psychologically and symbolically bound the country,” said Brad Westwood, Utah’s senior public historian.

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt marveled at how engineering, courage and risk-taking came together to make it possible.

“The story of this site says so much about our country,” Bernhardt said at the event, which included a reenactment of an iconic “champagne toast” photo of railroad workers perched atop facing stream locomotives giving cheers to the epic feat. “The joining of the two rail lines created a new sense of connectedness that helped form a common national identity.”

The festivities featured many moments and remarks that highlighted the vital contribution of the Chinese workers who put in long hours in brutal conditions and haven’t always received their proper due throughout history.

The ceremony started with a Chinese “lion dance,” and the first speaker was Chinese historian Connie Young Yu. She lamented that descendants of Chinese workers were hardly a part of the 100th anniversary celebration in 1969.

“Today we take this opportunity at the 150th to reclaim our place in history,” Young Yu said. “To honor the courage, fortitude and sacrifice of the Chinese railroad workers and their legacy in America.”

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao commended the estimated 12,000 Chinese workers who “risked everything” to build what she called “one of the greatest infrastructure projects” in U.S. history that unleashed explosive economic growth.

Freeman Lee came from his home in Sacramento, California, to “feel the presence” of his great-grandfather, who was among the Chinese workers who helped build the railroad. He proudly pointed out a page dedicated to his great-grandfather in a souvenir magazine for the event.

“It’s long overdue,” Lee said about the recognition.

Bill Hanmer drove with his wife from their Middletown, Virginia, home to check off a bucket list item. The 73-year-old pilot and train enthusiast said he desperately wanted to attend the 100th anniversary event but couldn’t afford it.

The couple woke up before dawn to be at the site by 6 a.m. to avoid getting stuck in long lines of cars that stretched for miles on a two-lane country highway that was the only way in and out.

“I’ve been waiting for 50 years to come back,” Hanmer said. “It’s a special event. It was a history-changing event.”

The laying of the final rails in 1869 triggered a famous telegraph that set off celebrations around the nation: “The last rail is laid. The last spike is driven. The Pacific railroad is completed. The point of junction is 1,086 miles west of the Missouri River and 690 miles east of Sacramento City.”

The bells at Philadelphia’s Independence Hall rang in celebration, a hundred guns were fired in New York, and American flags were hung in cities across the nation.

The golden spike included an inscription: “May God continue the unity of our country as this railroad unites the two great oceans of the world.”

The railroad was built using horses, oxen, hand carts, wagons and the “brawn” of mostly Irish immigrants working on the Union Pacific portion that came from the East and mostly Chinese workers on the Central Pacific part that came from the West, said Westwood, the public historian. They worked day and night and risked their lives blasting through rocks and shoveling snow on frigid mountain peaks.

Westwood said the railroad was built by the “most discriminated and least appreciated people in America.”

The epic construction project had a dark side, leading to the near annihilation of the bison, eventual loss of land for Native American tribes and the deaths of several hundred railroad workers, he added.

“It was a grand engineering feat,” Westwood said. “It was a grand gesture to bind the nation after the Civil War, but it was also a story of human capital and what it took.”

Resurrecting historical beer styles and merging them with modern brewing ingenuity is a hallmark of American craft brewers. And smoke beers are a perfect example of this creative spark.

In the smoke-beer genre, most point to the traditional Rauchbier style, which emerged in Bamberg, Germany, in the 1500s. In fact, “rauch” is the German word for “smoke.” By drying the malts over an open fire — typically beechwood — and incorporating them into the brewing process, it leaves a moderate level of smoky flavor and aroma that compliments the base beer, usually similar to a Bock or Märzen (or Oktoberfest).

Dark Horse chooses to use cherrywood instead of the traditional beechwood, and keeps the smoke levels at bay, which allows the stout to remain the star of the show. The light smokiness simply enhances the overall flavor, including its perceived flavors similar to roasted coffee and chocolate.

It’s smoked prior to us adding it into the mash tun with different grains. The main reason our smoke flavor is subtle is we only use about 2 percent smoked malt per batch, versus 25 percent or 50 percent. It gives us subtle flavor but the beer remains balanced,” Matthiesen said.

Drinkers will enjoy the beer’s nutty flavors mixed with fruit emanating from the dark caramel malts and spice from the Perle hops.

Smoked Märzen | 49th State Brewing Co. | Anchorage & Denali, AK

Part of its Hibernation Series, the hickory aroma and flavor found in this 49th State Smoked Märzen transports the drinker to a campfire in the middle of the woods. For those who love an abundance of smoke flavor, this is the beer for you.

The sweet malt of the traditional German beer with notes of fruit compliment a brew that isn’t afraid to showcase smoke. This is not a one-note beer.

Never afraid to do something bold, Surly not only went with a different type of lager (Baltic Porter), but also aged this beer.

Tiffany Jackson, Surly communications manager, explained the technique. “Smoke is aged in the fermenter for four-plus weeks with red oak honeycomb barrel alternative from Black Swan Cooperage in northern Minnesota. The red oak adds notes of light grass, baked bread and toasted marshmallow,” she said.

“The taste is sweet but balanced by the smoke notes and oak tannins,” she said. “These are a nod towards the natural smoky character of pre-industrial wood-kilned malts used in past eras. Compared to standard porters, Baltic Porters typically have higher ABVs, a neutral lager yeast character and rich, sweet malt notes.”

Though it’s not widely available, various rating sites show that people can get their hands on a few bottles. Most importantly, it demonstrates just how creative brewers can be when it comes to employing smoke.

Smoking Wood Rye Barrel Aged | The Bruery | Placentia, CA

The Bruery has released a bevy of “Smoking Wood” beers, aged in various types of whiskey barrels including rye. A good beer hunter and bottle trader could obtain the makings of a terrific vertical or wonderfully diverse smoke-beer collection.

The Rye Variant finds inspiration from all aspects of brewing history, from smoking to barrel-aging to malt experimentation. The rye adds spiciness to the smoke, while the presence of oak, caramel and vanilla, and a richness from the whiskey, provide a multi-dimensional taste.

Smoke From The Oak (Apple Brandy Barrel) 2017 | Captain Lawrence Brewing | Elmsford, NY

Captain Lawrence reminds us of tradition on its website: “Before the introduction of indirect-fired malt kilns, all beers had a smoky flavor.” So, it stands to reason that smoke and beer go hand-in-hand, and that’s probably why so many people enjoy the genre.

But, in true modern craft fashion, Captain Lawrence has taken it to a new level with its Smoke from the Oak Imperial Smoked Porter that is aged in apple brandy barrels for 10 months. Aroma and flavors remind one of brandy, oak, vanilla and a touch of honey. The bonus of a healthy dose of carbonation provides for a wonderful extra element.

Rauchbier & XO1 Oak-Aged Smoked Red Flanders | Dovetail Brewery | Chicago

When it comes to merging tradition with modern craft creativity, few do it better than Hagen Dost and Bill Wesselink at Dovetail Brewing in Chicago. They rely on the time-tested technique of coolship brewing to create classic European-style beers.

On coolship, Dost explained, “Not only does the beer cool down much faster, because of the large surface area, but I think the beer ends up being much more flavorful with this method, really clean and pure.”

That’s evident in the Rauchbier, which provides a pleasantly smoky aroma on the nose, but the taste is subtle. The smoke almost seems to kiss the palate with each sip but never once overpowering it.

That’s not all.

Dovetail took the Rauchbier, placed it in oak barrels and soured it. The result is an experimental Oak-Aged Smoked Red Flanders, called X01. It has all the charm of a Red Flanders with a pleasant addition of smoke and oak that results in a breathtaking beer.

Where There’s Smoke

Smoke beers tend to be seasonal and special releases, but that also allows for enhanced creativity. Considering this list, the smoke beers emerging from the minds of brewers are increasingly diverse and experimental.

For instance, in the recent past, Smuttynose (Smuttlabs) has produced Smoked Cherry and Smoked Peach Berliner Weisse beers, while Stone Brewing has offered several Smoked Porter variants including vanilla bean, chipotle pepper and one with chocolate and orange peel. Many local breweries play with smoke, too.

From bacon to barbecue to beer, there’s a renewed love affair with incorporating smoke into our food and drinks. And craft-beer revolution has given brewers an opportunity to reprise traditional techniques and combine them with modern craft approaches.

Church Of MO Honda Shadow Spirit 750 Vs. H-D 883R Sportster When it comes to lightweight cruisers, Harley’s 883 Sportster has been the staple of the category. Around, in one form or another, since the 1950s, it has earned the term OG for the class. Fast forward to 2002 and here we have the 883R Sportster going head-to-head with the Honda Shadow Spirit 750. With 50 years to study the venerable Harley-Davidson, Honda’s Shadow presents a bare-bones, lightweight cruiser that isn’t intimidating to the (relatively) new cruiser rider – traits it shares with the Harley. So who does it better? America or Japan? Read on to find out. Honda Shadow Spirit 750 Vs. H-D 883R Sportster Even two’s a crowd. By Calvin “Hackfu” Kim Aug. 26, 2002 Torrance, California, August 26, 2002 — Stonehenge. Do you know why the ancients built them? I don’t. In fact, nobody really knows for sure why it was built. That’s what a lot of people say about these cruisers. “Why’d you get a little Shadow? Didn’t you know about the VTX?” You know, that sort of thing. But in all fairness, anything with two wheels is fun, isn’t it? I mean, we had a blast riding scooters, that’s for sure. And even anti-cruiser John slowly started warming up to the long-and-low set after riding both the Volusia and the Vulcan. So what’s up with these un-popular, off-the-wall tests? Well, in the name of education, we’ll do anything, even test these two old-timers. Let’s be honest, at one point in time the Sportster was probably the best bike out there, period. Its history dates back as early as 1952 as the Model K “Sport,” but for the most part, the Sportster that we know today didn’t show up at dealers until 1986 with the spooning-in of an Evolution motor. Granted, in the modern age of Sportsters (post-1986), nobody in their right mind really thinks of Sportsters as being modern, high-performance transports. But they were always considered easy to ride, easy to learn on and most importantly, economical. The Honda is no different, really, albeit its heritage is a bit leaner. First built in 2001, the Shadow Spirit 750 seemed to be aimed right at the heart of the lightweight cruiser niche. It’s an important market, because the lightweights emphasize bang-for-buck over brute emotion to make the sale. For Harley-Davidson, the use of their 883 Sportster line to introduce riders to the brand is no secret. They’ll lure them in with great price and economy, then dazzle them with aftermarket parts, or better yet, upgrade them into a Big Twin. However, what if the customer just wants a bike? You know, something with two wheels that gets great mileage, decent performance and won’t break the bank? Oh yea, its gotta look cool too. For the most part, these two cruisers work great. Here we have two similar machines that are seemingly worlds apart. They both share certain design elements, namely, that they’re cruisers and they’re both V-twins. The Honda sports a somewhat modern, liquid-cooled, three-valve, dual-plug, V-twin motor. While the H-D’s engine is the familiar air-cooled unit. However, in our top-o-the line, R spec 883 Sportster, it gets a much cooler black powder coating job versus the somewhat gaudy chrome laden air-pump on the Spirit. The Honda has a great paint job. Stepping away from our two twins, you’ll notice that the Honda has an uncharacteristically pretty paint job with dark red flames on a lighter red background. The thing that really got to us was that it really did look good. However, the intense amount of chrome that was found on the Honda left a lot of onlookers covering their eyes. The Harley, being a Harley after all, always seemed to steal the show. We think it might have to do with its bright orange flat-track inspired coverings, combined with its flat-black engine and steering gear, the 883R really turned heads. Riding the machines left little to the imagination. These little cruisers aren’t gonna win any real-world performance or comfort contests. But in their defense, they compare well to other cruisers. Just looking at the weight and seat-height values for these machines will leave many “strength” or “vertically-challenged” riders breathing a sigh of relief. For example, the Shadow Spirit weighs a manufacturer’s listed 496 pounds dry with a 26.6 inch seat height. Whereas the 883 R sports (no pun intended) a manufacturer’s listed 503 pounds dry with a 28-inch seat height. With such friendly seat-heights, you’d think more thought would’ve been placed into the ergonomics of each machine. However, after 45 minutes of freeway riding, we wanted to take a large planer — or at the very least a moderate sized belt-sander — to the Los Angeles freeway system. The Spirit Shadow 750 had softish springs both front and back and damping rates that could use some stiffening. While appropriate for a light-weight rider (say, below 175 pounds) on slower city roads, once highway speeds get thrown into the mix, all bets were off; the damping just couldn’t keep up. The Sportster, true to its name, proved sportier than the Spirit did, although it too was plagued with soft fork and springs. Its damping was just a bit better. Sort of like comparing apples to, well, bigger apples. Unfortunately, a problem that beset both vehicles was the dreaded lower-back pain that seem to be problem-most-foul. The consensus seemed to indicate that the slouched seating position bent the spine in such a manner as to best allow shocks to go straight through the spinal column and into the brain. The two “iron-horses” cooling off by a foodery. We can’t help but wonder what would’ve happened if foodery was actually a real word. While the rider of either machine enjoyed what, during the Spanish Inquisition, could be conceived as comfort for periods longer than 45-minutes, passengers, well… let’s just say people of the sadomasochistic persuasion will feel right at home. We shouldn’t really have to say it but the Sportster’s rear seat sucked. Just look at the thing, does it look comfortable to you? As soon as a passenger would sit on that crude lump, they would immediately slide back and hit the license plate frame. I mean really, did some committee really sit down and decide that this would be the best way to transport a passenger? As a better option, the stock 883 does away with the passenger seat altogether. As far as the Spirit goes, it too would probably have benefited from a rear seat removal, but our rear-seat passenger did find it tolerable for 15-minute sessions. Not too shabby, unless you wanna go somewhere, say, greater than 15-minutes away. However, the Sportster clearly edged out the Honda in the ergoes category thanks to its more “standard” footpeg location thus allowing the rider to better shift his weight. The Honda possessed feet-forward controls more suited for boulevard cruising. Also the hand position afforded by the matte black bars on the 883R promoted a more natural riding position while the Spirit’s flatter, chrome bars felt somewhat disconnected. In contrast to the lackluster freeway comfort levels, cruising the mountain roads north of Los Angeles proved to be an enjoyable endeavor. Smooth power delivery and crisp shifts from the Honda helped us forget about our aching backs, as we’d give it a fistful of power exiting the many corners we met. The same disconnected feeling from the front-end continued to permeate through the lefts and rights but at least the Spirit tracked well enough to generate footpeg-grinding confidence. The Harley, however, seemed to come alive in the twisties. This is all relative of course. But the 883R had that elusive character that the Honda didn’t possess. We can conjecture that with enough miles the Spirit would have it too, but for the most part, it left a mild impression. Sort of like eating a tuna fish sandwich versus 24 ounces of juicy prime rib. The Sportster proved to be all that its name promised and more. We’d prefer stiffer suspension though. Surprisingly enough, the more modern Spirit 750 proved to be the lesser of the two machines in the power department. Maybe it’s the fact that the air-cooled, two-valve designed Sportster has a 133cc-displacement advantage. Who knows? Either way, even though the Sportster seemed to have less power, it was decidedly more fun in the curvy roads. With a fatter range of torque and a healthy throaty sound, the Harley was certainly the more favored sporting mount. As for braking and handling, well, let’s just put it this way; look elsewhere. The twin front disks on the Harley were better than the Honda’s single binder. But the mushy (even after JohnnyB bled them) binders on the Sportster didn’t convey the feel that the Spirit’s brakes did. “Where the Harley wins out though, is in ground clearance. Granted, it’s easy to grind peg on either machine, but it was much more difficult to do so on the Harley.” To add insult to injury, the Harley felt as if it had the softest suspension bits during braking and cornering. Don’t for a second take that statement to mean the Honda was well sprung, it too had serious damping issues. With a passenger on board we would bottom the rear shock, and yes, we were still under the max load limit. Even with these extreme shortcomings, these machines are still good to ride. You just have to have a different mindset in order to do so. Ditch the “hurry-up” attitude, and make sure the roads don’t have any harsh expansion joints and you’ll be set. There’s nothing better than a quiet putt-putt through a shady lane borough and nothing brings that out the best than these two iron-horses. If it were our money, it would be the Harley. Not only is it cheap enough for regular people, the aftermarket allows super upgradeability. And plus, its a Harley, so there’s always that added resale value. Heck, even on the Honda we could add some cheap-ass glass-pack, slash cut slip-ons and combined with the slick paint job, people wouldn’t know what the hell just whizzed by them. The Honda is smooooth and, if I really use my imagination, it kind of sounds like a RC-51 at idle. It has that classic cruiser leaned-back posture that kills even my young and resilient back after motoring 2 miles down a bumpy stretch of South Bay arterial road. The engine feels strong and responsive, but nothing inspiring. There’s nothing wrong with the bike, but I wish that there was so I could think of something distinguishing or characteristic about this bike! I didn’t use to hold any animosity in my warm and fuzzy heart towards Harleys until I had a spate of bad luck with them. But, even after a rocky start in my relationship with this 883R (something about an incident involving running out of gas on the 110 after picking it up from the Harley distribution center) I began to like it for what it is. It vibrates like it’s about to blow itself into nanoscopic pieces every time it accelerates, but I have to admit that it’s kinda cool. Taking these cruisers up into the Angeles National Forest really gave me a chance to bond with them. Riding, or attempting to ride, the Shadow at a semi-sporting pace was not a rewarding experience. And even from a cruising perspective it wasn’t spectacular either. It feels so bland that it is difficult to have any sort of remarkable experiences or impressions on it. But I’m sure it’s dead reliable and it would provide thousands of years of trouble-free and completely boring years of ownership. On the other hand, when I was blasting the Harley up a canyon road I could pretend for a brief moment that I was Steve McQueen riding in California 35 years ago, for no other real reason than the 883R feels like a bike of that vintage. And Steve McQueen’s the King of Cool in my book, and I felt pretty cool on this bike. I was actually impressed with the level of handling that it displayed around the twists and turns, and the dual front disc brakes were a lot better after JohnnyB bled them a bit- the lever no longer traveled all the way back to the grip under heavy braking. The true test would come when it came time for me to choose which one I would take home for the night; Mr. Harley won out. It feels good around town and freeway runs aren’t too terrible. I was having delusions of grandeur about sneaking a few of the Buell racing parts down in the MO shop into its engine, but barring that, I would love to see how it would run and sound with some curvaceous pipes, a filter and a jet kit. I work for a school and our healthcare company, Cigna, raised the rates from $20 a month last year, to $130 a month this year! And a family plan through Cigna (which I had hoped to use one day) will cost more than $700 a month!! What?? My friend drives a '98 Mercury right now. She's been into four accidents (three of them were caused by her), is one point away from getting her license taken away, and got a DUI last summer. She went to a small rinky-dink company for a lower quote and got a lower quote but I'm not quite sure what that quote was. It was dark and raining. I just came off the bay bridge in SF and am positive I was driving below 40 on the bridge and between 40-60 when I got off the bridge. The cop was on 80E past fremont exit. He said I was at 67 in a 50 zone and also did not give me enough time to look for my proof of insurance.
