Former WKYC Cleveland Reporter Tom Beres Gives Great Advice for Students Pursuing a Career in Journalism
(Hiram College, Gerstacker Computer Lab)- Tom Beres is a huge name in Reporting and has been for the past 34 years.
"It is an honor to be here today and I am thankful to share some of my information with you all", stated Beres. Beres was the longest tenured reporter for WKYC in Cleveland. He worked at WKYC for more than 34 years. The class asked Beres about what his most memorable moment was during the 34 years and he stated, “you know, there was so many different ones that stuck with me so I couldn’t really narrow it down to one. One thing I will share with you though is that one time I was covering a story that involved a homeless woman getting a home. Being apart of that was very memorable and those kinds of things really make you feel good”. Beres has also earned three Emmy Awards throughout his career, two of which were for investigative reporting.
During his early life, Beres was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and was a graduate of Westlake High School. Beres attended college at Northwestern University, where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. After College, Beres was an intern for the Cleveland Press. He then became an anchor for WDTN TV in Dayton, Ohio, prior to coming to Cleveland.
Beres has moderated numerous political debates for Ohio Senators and also was a radio correspondent covering the Watergate scandal while it was going on. The one piece of advice that he left the class with was when he stated, “whatever you guys decide to do in this business, make sure you are technologically savvy. It will take you a long way in present times because most news you see is online anyways. The better you are at using new technology, the more skills you will obtain”. Great advice from a legendary man.
