The Saint: The Helpful Pirate (5.5, ITC, 1966)
"Well, I must say, your operators are improving."
"Oh, you think so?"
"Oh yes, I would never have guessed that they were British Intelligence."
"Oh, I'll tell them! They'll be so pleased."
#the saint#the helpful pirate#1966#itc#leslie charteris#roy russell#roy ward baker#roger moore#erika remberg#paul maxwell#vladek sheybal#anneke wills#redmond phillips#george pravda#jack gwillim#michael wolf#laurence herder#ray austin#otto diamant#gerard heinz#back to a straight Charteris adaptation‚ and a pretty recent one too; the short story of the same name had only been published in '62 as#part of Trust the Saint‚ Charteris' 35th entry in the series. the book version is i think mostly concerned with the confidence trick that#plays only a tangential part here: the meat of the episode is a missing scientist‚ and for once Simon is not just working for British#Intelligence in a haphazard or coincidental way‚ but it's properly official (we even get a briefing in a consciously James Bond styled#opening scene). it marks i suppose a further shift in the style of the series as it began to finally make the move from playboy adventurer#to secret agent fantasy (for good or for bad‚ tastes had changed by the middle of the decade). the reason given by Gwillim's M type figure#does feel weak (he simply hasn't any agents to spare for this hugely important mission) but a greater focus on cold war themes does at#least grant us the presence of UK tv's favourite fake soviet‚ Vladek Sheybal (always a very welcome sight and here as purringly sinister#and delightfully conniving as he ever was). another old fave George Pravda is underused and oddly Gerard Heinz‚ a significant player in the#previous episode‚ goes uncredited here in a bit part walk on. perhaps the eps were shot back to back and he stopped on to help out?

another fun dream I had a long while ago was that Gerard Way owned a ketchup company and he proudly self advertised it during the weekly pancake report and then sued Heinz for copying his idea as if he invented red sauce

The Saint: The Reluctant Revolution (5.4, ITC, 1966)
"You seem to know a lot about what's happening in our small country?"
"Well, I know from what I've seen so far that the sooner you get rid of this present lot, the better."
"Good! Then, uh, then you will... you will help us?"
"I was just waiting for the invitation."
#the saint#the reluctant revolution#itc#leslie charteris#john stanton#leslie norman#roger moore#barry morse#jennie linden#martin benson#peter illing#gerard heinz#michael godfrey#peter halliday#john garrie#louis raynor#maria roza#norman florence#clive cazes#a familiar Saint plot‚ as Simon gets mixed up in the civil unrest of a fictional country (this week‚ San Pablo) and throws his lot in with#the rebels. it's worth noting tho that this feels like a somewhat darker treatment of the trope; Simon is witness to the execution by#firing squad of an 18yr old boy‚ and later is present (if not actively involved) for the killing of a traitor in the rebel ranks. a solid#cast of familiar faces but the stand out is of course Barry Morse‚ in one of his earliest british tv appearances; despite being english by#birth and having got his start at RADA‚ Morse had spent most of his career in the US until this point‚ including a long running co starring#role on The Fugitive (and guest spots in iconic series like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits). he'd end up as something of an ITC#regular‚ later taking supporting roles in The Adventurer and Space: 1999. here he's an american crook who's attached himself to the#president of San Pablo; actually the show is almost subversive in its depiction of this state being controlled by a local officials whose#greed and corruption is exploited by US agents (not just the crook played by Morse‚ but brief mention of US oil concerns playing a major#role in determining the current and future policies of this country). i mean the CIA aren't mentioned by name but it doesn't take a lot of#squinting to read between those lines...

A Deeper Look into Warhol’s ‘Brillo Pads’
In my post about Pop Art, I didn’t go into much depth about Warhol’s ‘Brillo Pads’ and I would like to discuss the production of it more, rather than just the idea behind it.
Andy Warhol moved the consumer imagery into the world of sculpture through his ‘Brillo Pads’.
Similar to that of a factory assembly line, Warhol hired carpenters to build many plywood boxes, identical in shape and size to the supermarket versions. With help from Billy Linch and Gerard Malanga, they painted and silkscreened the boxes with multiple product logos: Mott’s Apple Juice, Del Monte Peaches, Heinz Ketchup, Kellogg’s Cornflakes and finally, Brillo Soap Pads. The finished pieces were practically identical to the cardboard counterparts.
After the move to Warhol’s new workplace, truckloads of wooden boxes arrived and were individually wrapped in plastic sheets. The floor of the studio was covered with rolls of brown paper and the boxes set up in a grid like pattern of eight rows. Liquitex paint covered all sides of the boxes, which numbered around 80. This silk-screening process was repeated numerous times to achieve the best effect. Completing the work took nearly 6 weeks, from February to April.
These sculptures were first exhibited at the Stable Gallery in 1964 and were stacked and crammed to resemble a supermarket. Collectors were invited to view and buy them stack by stack however, they did not respond well to the artwork- the sculptures caused major controversy. Warhol wanted to create something mundane and commercial to anger the critics.
The ‘machine-made’ appearance of the boxes contrasted with the abstract brushstrokes of the paintings.
Eleanor Ward stated that, ‘The boxes were difficult to sell. He thought that everyone was going to buy them on sight, he really and truly did. We all had visons of people walking down Madison Avenue with these boxes under their arms, but we never saw them.’ (Bourdon, 1989)
I feel as though most of the names here have gone unnoticed and Warhol is the only one who got any recognition for these sculptures. I would like to know the names of the carpenters as they contributed just as much to the work as the artists.
