The historical record offers few glimpses of Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales. There is just one contemporary portrait of him at the age of thirteen or fourteen and a scattering of written observations, although we learn from the Milanese Ambassador Soncino that Arthur, just before his eleventh birthday, was 'taller than his years would warrant, of remarkable beauty and grace and very ready in Latin.' We know that he was intelligent, that his teachers included scholars such as Erasmus's friend Thomas Linacre and that he was familiar with the works of twenty-four classical authors, in Latin. These small snatches cannot tell us what kind of king he would have made [...]

Being sad about King James IV of Scotland
I don't usually care about what happened to historical monarchs but I find myself quite upset for this one. Probably because of how he is portrayed in the (non fiction) book I'm reading but also maybe because he was one of very few people who could give Henry VIII a proper headache.
On the plus side, it was Catherine of Aragon, daughter of Isabella I of Castille, and much more interesting woman than she is usually remembered as, who technically beat him. And it was James IV's heirs who took over the English throne after Elizabeth I.
Not really got anyone to talk to about this. Might as well post into the Tumblr void as anywhere else. You never know, the emotional fallout of the Battle of Flodden 1513 might be someone else's interest here as well...

When Pedro de Ayala had written to Ferdinand and Isabella that Henry VII 'would like to govern England in the French fashion', he meant that Henry wanted to rule by diktat, without recourse to Parliament or the advice of his own Council. He had concluded with the words 'but he cannot'. That, however, was in 1498. During the last few years of his reign, Henry had been very 'French' indeed. There had been no Parliament since 1504 [,] government from the Privy Chamber was matched by money into the Privy Purse[, and] the King's policy of 'fiscal terror' had sustained him [...]

I'm working on updating some of the 'extra pages' and I'm starting to become amazed at how quickly some of the relationships progressed.
Honey Harman and Scott Burnett:
They met in Episode 278 when Scott's wife was murdered.
They slept together for the first time 282 just a couple of episodes after Scott's wife's body was found. (She didn't dump Steve Hunter until episode 283...!)
They got engaged in episode 291.
The wedding was episode 307!
29 episodes from first meeting!
Dave Quinnan and Jenny Delaney
Whilst Dave and Jenny had a longer period from the first meeting, given that y'know... Dave was unconscious [2nd March 99/Badlands], they didn't hold back!
Dave found out George and Jenny were dating on 22nd April/Look Away Now.
They realised they wanted each other in Pillow Talk/6th July when Dave was on an overnight guard job at St Hughes.
George wanted to propose to Jenny in the next episode 8th July/Heavy Plant Crossing (he's another fast mover, but I haven't included it because Jenny clearly doesn't feel the same and it's more plot device than actual romance) but Jenny postpones and won't let him know how she really feels. Jenny and Dave get it ooooon and Jenny escapes to Colombia as part of an earthquake clean-up crew.
George goes to propose properly on the 12th October in Love And War part 1 because Jenny is finally returning from Colombia. He sees Dave and Jenny together and part 2 continues with the chaos and George leaving.
18th November/Security is Dave trying to find time to propose whilst uniform gives Jenny the cold shoulder.
15th December/A Night To Forget - Dave's stag night and Jenny's hen night.
16th December/A Day To Remember - the wedding.
So whilst it is officially 70 episodes from the first meeting, if we go from their affair starting, it is only 42. If we go from 'Love And War' when they were actually 'together' without George's interference, then it is 19 episodes from a proper relationship without the complicated stuff and wedding!
Our final couple beat everyone hands down!
Jim Carver and Marie Graham.
Marie and Jim end up in bed on their first meeting, Episode 099.
Jim tries to put distance between them in episode 100, but he's still her FLO after the death of her daughter.
They have a slightly rocky relationship from episode 101 to 112 when Marie proposes to Jim.
Jim accepts in 113 (with June thinking that he's going to propose to her after her 'break' in episode 115).
Jim and Marie get married in 119!
20 episodes from meeting each other, and 18 episodes from actually getting together!

I actually liked the way Otis and Maeve's story ended (I say this as someone who has shipped them since season 1). My only problem is that I feel like there weren't special moments between them like there used to be in season 1, or sometimes in season 2, that would have made their break up feel more impactful. I feel like Aimee and Maeve's relationship ended up outshining them, and even Isaac's small moment with Maeve this season felt like more of a connection than Otis had with her this season. I definitely loved what Maeve shared with Aimee and Isaac and would not change a thing. But, I would also add awesome Motis moments like we got when the show first came out. But I feel like the letter sort of made up for all the bullshit that went down between them and explained why she loved him. I still would have preferred if there were some season 1-like moments though.
Also, I didn't really like Ruby's last scene with Otis. I think it was a sign that she was putting herself first instead choosing to hang out with Otis when she clearly wasn't over him, which was good. But I wish the dialogue had been different. Or maybe I've completely misinterpreted the scene?
I actually quite liked this season overall for all of the characters, especially Maeve, Aimee, Ruby, Isaac, and Eric. I think Adam's arc was good too, he was just never my personal favourite.
Also, did anyone else expect that Molloy dude to steal Maeve's work? And a book from Maria Bronte's perspective sounds really interesting to me.
