KE AUPUNI UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2024
Pacific Way and the Future One of the regular features on our program, Free Hawaiʻi News on ʻŌlelo TV is a discussion between Kumu Hina Wong and me, called “the Pacific Way”. It’s about looking at topics of concern from a Pacific islander perspective and it’s influence on how we do things and how we live. In contrast is the “Western Way” which has come to dominate the economic, political and social systems around the world. Some call it the legacy of colonialism. A recent United Nations resolution calls it, the negative legacy of colonialism. But now, the colonial system is beginning to implode. Careless, reckless and relentless commercial pursuits of the Western Way has brought the world to the brink of a catastrophic collapse. This is where the Pacific Way comes in. There is a rising awareness that the profound value of ancient knowledge and traditional practices could provide the answers to the grave issues facing the world today. What if we were to apply the “Pacific Way”, or more specifically, “the Hawaiʻi Way”, to issues such as caring for the people (mālama i ka poʻe); for our land (mālama I ka ʻāina), and caring for our ocean (mālama i ke kai); and caring for the planet (mālama honua). It prioritizes food resources, housing, sustainability, relationships, caring for our earth, sky and sea. Pacific islanders have a way of relating to our surroundings that has sustained, nurtured and helped us to thrive on tiny specs of land scattered over a vast ocean covering a third of the globe. For many years the people of Hawaiʻi have been suffering from a severe housing crisis. In the previous Ke Aupuni News we spoke of the diaspora of Hawaiians having to live not only in the U.S., but all over the globe. In a conversation I had with the Kiribati ambassador to the UN a few years ago, he said, what if our goal as leaders is not to just provide a way for people to afford to live, but to provide the conditions to make people happy, and at peace with one another? To thrive and to see life pursuits not as a series of win/lose encounters or even win/win events, but as, happy/happy opportunities. Think about it. By engaging with a “win-lose” or even a “win-win” mindset, the parties operate in a competitive and even adversarial mode. But in working for a happy-happy outcome, the parties operate in a collaborative mode of considering and caring for the welfare of the other party as well as their own. The platform becomes, sharing with aloha. Happily, the conversation in our islands is beginning to shift toward the Pacific/Hawaiʻi Way of thinking… encouraging & supporting local residents to step forward into roles of responsibility of any size, small, medium or large, to let the U.S. occupiers of Hawai`i, especially the real estate developers and government agencies, know that, going forward, decisions must be made from the ground up, and local residents in their local areas must be the ones to decide their own futures.
“Love of country is deep-seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station.” — Queen Liliʻuokalani ---------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. ------ For the latest news and developments about our progress at the United Nations in both New York and Geneva, tune in to Free Hawaii News at 6 PM the first Friday of each month on ʻŌlelo Television, Channel 53. ------ "And remember, for the latest updates and information about the Hawaiian Kingdom check out the twice-a-month Ke Aupuni Updates published online on Facebook and other social media." PLEASE KŌKUA… Your kōkua, large or small, is vital to this effort... To contribute, go to: • GoFundMe – CAMPAIGN TO FREE HAWAII • PayPal – use account email: [email protected] • Other – To contribute in other ways (airline miles, travel vouchers, volunteer services, etc...) email us at: [email protected] All proceeds are used to help the cause. Celebrating UNCTAD’s achievements of the past 60 years - Charting a New Development Course in a Changing World.
Marking its 60th Anniversary, UNCTAD Rebrands to “UN Trade and Development” and Convenes a Global Leaders Forum
UNCTAD’s 60th anniversary Rebrands as "UN Trade and Development" and convenes Global Leaders Forum with the UN Secretary-General, Heads of State, leading economists and Nobel Laureates in June 2024.
UN Trade and Development’s Secretary-General, Rebeca Grynspan, emphasized the organization’s transformative approach and commitment to supporting developing countries in an increasingly polarized world.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) announced today its landmark rebranding as "UN Trade and Development," commemorating its 60th anniversary this year. This strategic move underscores the organization's commitment to greater impact with a new, clearer visual identity aiming to better reflect its work and values aiming to amplify its global voice on behalf of developing countries.
Charting a New Course
Under the leadership of Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan, the organization has been adapting to a rapidly changing global trade landscape impacted by the COVD19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions and climate change, with initiatives that enhance the organization's capacity to rapidly analyze new challenges and support efforts in developing nations.
The rebranding marks a pivotal moment- the first ever comprehensive review of UNCTAD’s global communication footprint and a bold forward-looking strategy to communicate its work and values.
At the presentation of the organization’s new brand as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, Secretary-General Grynspan underlined "Visible, transformational change is our objective. We are celebrating UNCTAD’s achievements of the past 60 years as a forward-looking, renewed organization, building on our legacy but ready to respond to the new complexities of the global economy. We will continue to work to ensure development is at the core of global economic decisions, and the voice of developing countries is heard."
The organization will adopt its new name and logo across all official channels, in the six UN languages, marking its first rebranding in sixty years.
60th anniversary celebration: Global Leaders Forum
The rebranding marks the start of the 60th anniversary of the organization. UN Trade and Development will convene a Global Leaders Forum from 12-14 June at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, inaugurated by UN Secretary-General, António Guterres and UN Trade and Development Secretary-General, Rebeca Grynspan, alongside Heads of State and Government, and the participation of civil society organizations, private sector representatives and some of the world’s leading economists. Under the theme "Charting a New Development Course in a Changing World", the Forum will emphasize the organization’s integrated approach to trade and development, addressing finance, technology, investment, and sustainable development, with a specific focus on the needs of developing countries, and UNCTAD’s work in Africa, the least developed countries, small island developing states (SIDs), and landlocked developing countries.
It will also be an important occasion to explore innovative approaches and pioneering solutions with the world’s top policy makers and thinkers.

2021 / 13
Aperçu of the Week:
He who trusts others too little has fear in all corners.
He who relies too much on others wakes up in terror.
Wer andern gar zu wenig traut, hat Angst an allen Ecken.
Wer gar zu viel auf andre baut, erwacht mit Schrecken.
(Wilhelm Busch)
Bad News of the Week:
I am a firm believer in equal treatment and fair play. Even if that can sometimes lead to losing to a bully. And of course, such a mindset is put to the test, especially in times of crisis. And we are having a time of crisis right now. In the face of Corona, we see - once again - a significant way in which individual states and societies are dealing with it. Let's take the USA and Germany for example. Surprise!
The two countries have made by far the largest investments in vaccine development: of a total of $5.9 billion (according to a study by the Center for Global Health at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva), 2.2 came from the U.S. and 1.5 from Germany, which thus clearly leads in relation to its population. But who is now benefiting how much from its investments? Surprise!
Last week, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that in his first 100 days in office, 200 million doses of vaccine will find their way into the arms of his citizens. And it is to be counted on the fact that to the Independence Day on 04 July the entire population is protected. Germany, on the other hand, does not dare to make any prognosis, but only has the courage to hold out the prospect that at the end of the summer - and we are talking about September 21 - every adult who is willing to be vaccinated can be offered a vaccination. In plain language: then I will also get a vaccination appointment, and than can be three months later. Merry Christmas. Why is that? Surprise!
The seemingly great success in the U.S. is primarily due to two factors: First, an export ban on vaccines was imposed - which also trumps contractual delivery obligations of private-sector companies. Second, an emergency law decreed that pharmaceutical company A must or, depending on one's point of view, may produce the vaccine of pharmaceutical company B - although this law was explicitly created for wartime. And therefore its legitimacy may be doubted. But the USA has always been quite generous with the term war, not only since Ronald Reagan's "war on drugs" or "war on crime". So a declaration of war is obviously only a political tool, if it helps. Surprise!
Germany, on the other hand, sits in its European boat full of lofty principles and wonders. How can it be that there is too little vaccine, although it is needed? Why do supplies to third countries such as Australia leave the continent when we don't have enough vaccine ourselves? Why does the UK get batches from Belgian and Italian manufacturing plants, but Europe gets none from the island? Why does not a single pharmaceutical company keep its delivery promises to Brussels, but to Jerusalem, New Delhi and Ottawa? After all, we ordered and paid and dutifully kept to the terms and conditions. Well, the transition from idealism to naivety is fluid. At least we are the moral victor. But, as we all know, you can't buy anything with that. Unfortunately, none of this comes as a surprise...
Good News of the Week:
Last week, the UN again hosted a donor conference for Syria. The war-torn country in the Middle East, whose population has no chance of survival, let alone a future, without international aid. And there is no end in sight to the suffering. The U.S. doesn't give a damn about the legacies of its own decades-long misguided Middle East policy. And the other major players, Russia, Iran and Turkey, are merely pursuing their own geostrategic goals and are therefore coming to terms with despot Bashar Al-Assad at the expense of the civilian population.
6.4 billion US dollars came together at the conference. Of that, 596 million from the United States. And 2.05 billion from Germany, not counting the indirect support through our share of the EU budget. Who notices the difference with vaccine spending (see Bad News of the Week above)? The explanation is obvious: the USA, glorious inventors of hedge funds and turbo-capitalism, do not give away money, they invest it. And this primarily with the goal of maximizing profits. And Germany often acts selflessly. Again, we are the moral victor. This time, however, we are not paying for our own disadvantage, but simply for a good cause. And therefore don't feel like fools.
Personal happy Moment of the Week:
Ever since I grew too fast at 12, 13 years old, I've had problems with my back. Fatal for someone who works at a desk. Especially because humans are not exactly designed for sitting. Therefore, I recently bought a so-called standing/sitting table for the home office. In other words, a table that you can move up and down electrically so that you can change positions frequently during the course of a working day. After two weeks, I can draw an extremely positive conclusion. Because I stood all days. And completely. In other words, without sitting at all. And not with more back pain, but with integrated back training. And I have to smile about the fact that a standing desk would have done just as well.
As I write this...
...I listen to a cacophony my wife is creating with the vacuum cleaner and an 80s playlist from the HomePods. But since this saves me from doing housework, I can't complain... ;-)

Countries that International Rescue went to
These are places and Countries that International Rescue have been to in each episode. Some of these are fictional and unknown places, so some of them are guesses. I've had to look closely at John's maps to see where they were but some countries and places were still not clear.
I'll be focusing on the main rescues but there be some exceptions on other rescues.
If you have any idea on some of the unknown places or some things that I've missed, please let me know.
Season 1
Ring of Fire Part 1: Couldn't tell but it looks like it was in the Pacific ocean near Central America Ring of Fire Part 2: Taipei, Taiwan Space Race: Space and London Crosscut: South Africa, near Pretoria Fireflash: Between England and Australia, Fireflash landed in the Gobi Desert, which is in Mongolia/China Unplugged: London Runaway: Japan EOS: Space Slingshot: Space Tunnels of Time: Somewhere in South America Sky Hook: over the Indian Ocean and in space Under Pressure: Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean Heavy Metal: New Geneva is a fictional place but Geneva is in Switzerland, so it must be in Switzerland Falling Skies: Space and the hotel exploded in the sky in Florida Relic: Space, The Moon Breakdown: Arctic Circle, Greenland Heist Society: Between UK and Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean Recharge: Arctic Circle Extraction: England The Hexpert: Unknown, probably America Comet Chasers: Space Designated Driver: England Chain of Command: Not sure where the bridge collapsed, but the main rescue was in Dubai. Touch and Go: America Undercover: Unknown, probably England Legacy: Fake Rescues - John and Alan in space, Gordon in sea in Japan, Kayo in Australia, Virgil in Spain and Scott in China.
Season 2
Earthbreaker: Unknown but scandium ore is found in Norway/Sweden, Madagascar and China ect. Or it could of been found somewhere new, so maybe Australia or Africa or south America. Ghostship: Space Deep Search: Space, Jupiter moon Europa City Under The Sea: Unknown as it was a fictional place but if I had to guess the place seems British so it could of been part of England, maybe on one of the islands, Isle of White or Jersey or Isle of Man ect. Colony: Space, Mars Up From The Depths Part 1: Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific Ocean. Up From The Depths Part 2: The Artic and in Space Lost Kingdom: Aegean Sea near Greece Impact: Space High Strung: Southern Alps, New Zealand Weather or Not: Saudi Arabia Fight or Flight: Unknown as the City is fiction/reference from OS but if I had to guess, probably America Escapeproof: England as Parkmoor Scrubs prison is there but The Mechanic could of started the hole from another country. Volcano: Iceland Power Play: Unknown, probably America. Bolt From The Blue: North Pacific Ocean Attack of the Reptiles: Central Africa Grandma Tourismo: Western Sahara Desert, The shopping was in South Spain (Thought it was a bit weird that Virgil and Grandma Tracy went all the way to Spain to do some shopping. Is it cheaper there or something, LOL) Clean Sweep: Unknown, probably in the Atlantic, I guess the control room is in London. The Man from TB5: Unknown, probably in the French or Swiss Alps Inferno: London Home on the Range: America Long Haul: Space Rigged for Disaster: Unknown, could be in the Atlantic or North Sea. Hyperspeed: Between England and Japan, the rescue could be somewhere in the Alps. Brain vs Brawn: Sahara Desert, I assume Gordon was taking the Hood in the Mediterranean Sea and Penny and Parker took The Hood for a drive in Spain.
Season 3
Chaos Part 1: Unknown, The Crane Rescue could be in America. The Main Rescue could be in The Arctic or Antarctica. Chaos Part 2: Space and Unknown, I couldn't tell what country the space lift was in. Path of Destruction: Unknown Night and Day: Space,Mercury Growing Pains: Arctic, North Pole Life Signs: Space, Mars Rally Raid: Unknown but most probably in America Crash Course: Space Flame Out: America as United States was mentioned Deep Water: Great Barrier Reef, off the East Coast of Australia Endgame: Unknown SOS Part 1: Space SOS Part 2: Atlantic Ocean, near East Africa SIgnals Part 1 and 2: Space and The Pacific Ocean Chain Reaction: Unknown, looks like it was in the same area as Path of Destruction. Getaway: London Avalanche: Unknown as it was a fictional mountain but there is a Kosha Mountain in Japan so it could be there or some other place in Asia. Upside Down: Going by John's Map it's in Indian Ocean off the west coast of Australia. But the Southern Ocean was mentioned which is south of Australia north of Antarctica, so bit of a mistake here.. Icarus: Space and Unknown as the event was in the sky somewhere. Breakout: Space Buried Treasure: Unknown, could be England Venom: The Amazon Rain forest, Brazil Firebreak: Unknown but due to the mention of leaves, Elm and Dogwood, it could be America. Eucalyptus leaf was mentioned too, the tree is original from Australia but at some point in the 1800s they brought trees to America. So i'm sticking with America The Long Reach Part 1 and 2: Space

PEMDAS -- 11•19•20
Welcome to the new PEMDAS Blog! My work on PEMDAS keeps expanding each week so it needs a bigger home. She loves The Overwhelm.
My main goal is to have a one glance spot for all things news/entertainment. I want it to contain as much detail as possible without being too cluttered. Striking the balance is hard. If you have feedback, please share it with me.
Open below for PEMDAS!
POLITICS/NEWS
U.S. Coronavirus Numbers
More than 11,695,500 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 251,100 have died.
The number of people who have died from Coronavirus in the U.S. is equivalent to 84 times the number of U.S. citizens who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It is 56 times the number of U.S. soldiers who died in the war against Iraq. It is 7 times the number of U.S. citizens who died from the flu last year.
On Nov. 18: 1,923 deaths (+52% 14-day change), 172,391 infections (+77% 14-day change)
The rates of infection and death remain disproportionately high in the Native American communities across the country. Just last weekend, 600 Native people died on the Navajo reservation.
Sen. Chuck Grassley from Iowa has contracted coronavirus. The nation mourns :-(
Global Coronavirus Numbers
The coronavirus pandemic has sickened more than 56,661,800 people, according to official counts. As of Thursday afternoon, at least 1,355,100 people have died.
On Nov. 18: 11,133 deaths (+13% 14-day change), 598,877 infections (+25% 14-day change)
Election 2020
President-Elect Biden claims that Trump’s refusal to concede the election is preventing him from accessing critical data about the U.S. outbreak and that this could slow the vaccine distribution process.
President-Elect Biden names Cecilia Muñoz as part of his transition team. Muñoz served as a top immigration advisor for Obama, justifying harsh immigration policies, including the deportation of thousands of Central American children and the killing of an executive order that would have halted deportations.
Nancy Pelosi is re-elected as Speaker of the House.
World News
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo toured an illegal Israeli settlement and said he has plans to tour another in the occupied Golan Heights. This violates multiple U.N. resolutions and the Geneva Conventions. He also labelled the B.D.S. movement “anti-Semitic.”
In Central America, at least 30 people have died from Hurricane Iota. About 160,000 Nicaraguans and 70,000 Hondurans were forced to flee from their homes.
The head of the Australian military has apologized to the people of Afghanistan after Australian special forces committed war crimes by killing 39 noncombatants in Afghanistan over the past 4 years.
A nearly three-decade-old ceasefire has ended in occupied Western Sahara — what many consider to be Africa’s last colony. Fighting has broken out in several areas between the Moroccan military and the Polisario Front, the Sahrawi liberation movement seeking independence, after the Moroccan military broke into a no-go buffer zone in southern Western Sahara.

EDUCATION — Topic: this Candace Owens tweet
“There is no society that can survive without strong men. The East knows this.“
Both of these sentences separately are not true; both of them together are not true.
Here is an article about a village in China (”the East”) with women running the show.
Here is a list of several others, mostly in “the East.”
“In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence.“
First of all, Marx has not been an outright advocate for a gender-queer society.
Second of all, I think she’s right. Socialism and gender/queer theory are intertwined in so many ways.
“It is an outright attack.“
And I think she’s right about this, too. Socialism and gender/queer theory all are an attack on the cis-hetero white supremacist capitalist patriarchy.
“Bring back manly men.“
Okay, this is where I think she’s wrong again.
1) "Manly men” haven’t gone anywhere...
2) Is she basically arguing that a couple of men wearing dresses means every man is no longer “manly?” This makes no sense.
3) In a society, “manly men” can coexist with “feminized” men. There is enough room for everyone. And there will always be men who want to take up the “manly” MANtle. And there will be queer/trans masc people who will want to do the same, though I’m sure Candace would hate that.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - MARCH 2023
Legacy of Colonialism A couple of years ago, Alaska and Hawaii held a virtual press conference at the Geneva Press Club to point out the UNʻs double standard regarding colonialism and the right to self-determination. It stirred up some spirited discussion and resulted a few months later with the Human Rights Council (HRC) passing Resolution HRC 48/7, titled: Negative impact of the legacies of colonialism on the enjoyment of human rights. The resolution calls on all UN bodies and UN member states to bring an end to the remaining vestiges of colonialism. The questions are: Is there the political will to do so? And if so, How to go about ending these vestiges of colonialism? In the open debate about implementation of Resolution 48/7 this past September, about 80% of the Council members made strong statements decrying colonialism. But not a single suggestion was made on how to end colonialism. They all said it will be a difficult, monumental task, thus rationalizing inaction, when actually, decolonization does not have to be complicated at all. From 2014–2016 the Decolonization Alliance a group that I chaired in New York, held a series of dialogs to jumpstart the United Nationsʻ decolonization process. Some of those talks were sponsored by the United Methodist Church asking what they could do to initiate acts of repentance to make amends for the damage they caused by their involvement in colonialism. The Methodist Church is a prominent denomination in Palau so a few days after one of those dialogs, I had a conversation with Ambassador Caleb Otto from Palau and asked him what he would recommend the church could do as an act of repentance for its role in colonialism. Without hesitation, he said, “breastfeeding”. I was taken aback and asked, “what do you mean, breastfeeding”? Ambassador Otto said that as an act of repentance, the Methodist Churches in Palau could start by encouraging young mothers and mothers-to-be, to breastfeed their babies. He said that the incessant decades-long campaign by milk-producing corporations (from colonizing countries) convinced Palauan mothers that baby formula was much better than breast-feeding. This has ruined the health of generations of formula-fed babies, and consequently ruined the health of his nation. If the church as an act of repentance was to promote breastfeeding it would immediately improve the health of children of Palau, and eliminate many later-in-life diseases, thus strengthening the nation. More importantly, it would serve to repudiate other insipid, manipulative colonial lies that were used to intimidate and subjugate people by denigrating their indigenous ways and introducing foreign ways that assert, “our way is much better than your way” and “we have come to free you ignorant savages from your miserable lives”... What are those lies that we swallowed? We are lazy. We are stupid. We are inferior. We are incompetent. Our language, culture and traditional ways are antiquated and irrelevant. Over time, this denigration developed into a deep and pervasive lack of confidence in oneʻs very existence, which in turn developed into the “Stockholm Syndrome” where people lose their own identity, values, lifestyle, culture and take on the identity and attributes of their tormentors. Itʻs not complicated. As we approach the restoration of the Hawaiian Islands as a sovereign state, we need to huli (flip) the American colonial mindset and habits and restore our peopleʻs identity, dignity and confidence as Hawaiians in a Hawaiian nation... ---------- Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono. The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.

What to see and do in Annecy, France
Annecy, France, the city of the best-known lake in the Alps, is the beautiful and charming capital city of the department of Haute-Savoie, in the French region of Auvergne-Rhodano-Alpes, is located northwest of France, very close to the Swiss border, just 42 km south of Geneva. The biggest natural attraction for locals and visitors is the beautiful Lake of Annecy, a magnet for tourism that brings great value to the city and its population that lives very close to its waters, where they swim, dive, sail, fish, practice water sports, they recreate on their beaches or simply enjoy walking or cycling along their shore. Annecy is also known as the Venice of Savoy, due to the water channels that cross the fascinating historic center, to pour its waters into the lake. Different sections of bucolic canals crossed by charming little bridges, banks full of flowers that adorn the terraces of numerous restaurants and the facades of the colorful typical houses of Swiss architectural style because Annecy-le-Vieux belonged to the Swiss canton before being annexed to France.
What to see and do in Annecy, France
Offering postcard images in any corner, the old area of Annecy (Annecy-le-Vieux) captivates and surprises visitors who do not know what to photograph first. Strolling through the pedestrian streets of the old area is a pleasure for the senses, its history of undeniable beauty will envelop us everywhere. Annecy Lake
What to see and do in Annecy, France The wonderful lake of Annecy, of glacial origin, with an area of 27.4 km2 is the second largest lake in France and is considered one of the cleanest in the world. Great leisure, recreation and rest center for the inhabitants of the region and great attraction for the many visitors who come on weekends. The road around the lake is full of landscapes and places that are worth a visit, such as the Duingt Castle and the Marais du Bot Nature Reserve. Annecy le Vieux
What to see and do in Annecy, France It is the oldest area of the city and our favorite area to visit in Annecy, whose medieval legacy offers us architectural jewels quite well preserved due to the great use of the stone for its construction; walls, narrow streets, houses with intertwined roofs, bridges and buildings such as the Island Palace, built on an island in the middle of the canal; Today the headquarters of the Annecy Museum of History and the second most photographed monument in France! Island Palace
What to see and do in Annecy, France Declared National Historic Monument in 1900, without a doubt, the symbol of the city and one of the main monuments of the Annecy postcards. Located on a tiny island on the Thiou Canal that flows into Lake Annecy. Its triangular rear part resembles the bow of a ship stranded in the canal. It was built in the 12th century, as the official residence of the Lord of Annecy, later it was the Palace of Justice, Casa de la Moneda and finally, it was used as a prison until 1865. Today its old walls house the Museum of History of the city and are the main monument to see in Annecy. Annecy Castle
What to see and do in Annecy, France Among the monuments to see in Annecy, is the Castle. It is a monumental fortress of the twelfth century, built by the counts of Geneva on Mount Semnoz inhabited until the seventeenth century when it was abandoned after a time of decline. In 1953 the city finally decided to buy the Castle for its recovery and conditioning for its current role as a Museum. The Museum houses the headquarters of the Alpine Lakes Regional Observatory and the Archeology Museum where we find exhibitions about the first inhabitants of the lake, some aquariums with the species of fish from the Alpine lakes and a model of Lake Annecy itself. Also interesting are the models of boats and an exhibition of fishing utensils. In another section of the castle is the Museum of Alpine Popular Art, with a large collection of regional sculptures and paintings. It also exposes a collection of antique furniture and other types of historical objects. Bridge of Loves
What to see and do in Annecy, France The Bridge of Loves, located on the Vasse canal, one of the channels that pour its waters into Lake Annecy. Popular belief argues that the bridge owes its name to the custom in the past of going to this place to meet prostitutes. Nowadays, however, it enjoys great romantic symbology and the lovers who, according to legend, will stay together for a long time walk along this bridge if they kiss in their central section. Europe Gardens Crossing the Bridge of Loves we arrive at the park of the Gardens of Europe. They were created by a wealthy family outside the city walls, in a swampy area next to Lake Annecy. Today it is a large urban park, with numerous trees and shrubs and breathtaking views of the great Blue Lake where you can breathe peace and silence. An idyllic place to go picnics, go for a walk or spend time in meditation and rest. In this beautiful urban park, we can observe and admire the curious Gingko Biloba tree and specimens of giant Redwoods.
How to get to Annecy, France
What to see and do in Annecy, France Annecy is at the foot of the French Alps and the two closest and most important cities are Lyon in France and Geneva in Switzerland, so if you live far away and are not on the road, you have to take a flight to one of those cities. By Car: The best way to get to Annecy is by car. That way we are free to move around the surroundings of Annecy, which are wonderful, and we do not depend on public transport, which between cities works very well, but to reach some specific places, it is not the most suitable. By Train: There are several daily trains connecting the Lyon Part Dieu station with Annecy and it takes about two hours. Although it is possible to go back and forth in the day, we recommend doing at least one night to get to know the city well. By Bus: Some direct buses to Annecy leave from Geneva and take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half. The main bus station is Gare routière de Geneve although some also depart from the Geneve Eaux-Vives train station. From Lyon, the Ouibus company offers us two options; Direct lines from Lyon-Saint Exupéry airport, ideal if you arrive by plane. The other is from the Gare de Lyon-Perrache bus stop. In this case, the journeys last between an hour and a half and two hours. Images via Gettyimages Read the full article

We're thrilled to present Michael Green, as our January speaker, presenting on the topic of Roots.
Michael Green is an award-winning architect, speaker and author known internationally for his research, leadership, and advocacy in promoting the use of wood, new technology and innovation in the built environment.
Michael is the founder of MGA | Michael Green Architecture, an architecture and design firm creating ambitious, innovative modern timber buildings, DBR | Design Build Research and TOE | Timber Online Education, a non-profit school and research platform.
A Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, Michael is the author of several international publications on mass timber and tall wood.
Q&A How do you define creativity and apply it in your life and career?
Enduring childhood abandon, a deep desire for adventure, a willing exploration of risk, and an undying dedication to love.
Where do you find your best creative inspiration or energy?
This one is simple; in nature.
What’s one piece of creative advice or a tip you wish you’d known as a young person?
You will find yourself when you find yourself; never force it and never expect more of yourself than the moment you are in.
Who (living or dead) would you most enjoy hearing speak at CreativeMornings?
Yvon Chouinard, founder of Great Pacific Iron Works, Chouinard Equipment, Patagonia, 1% for the Planet and a host of other progressive organizations and companies but most importantly a father of modern day ice climbing and designer of my first ice climbing axes.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
There is a long and silly list of craziness; from free climbing solos to rappelling off a suspension bridge into a waterfall wearing my cap and gown at Cornell graduation, to being the first to ever kayak the northern border of Afghanistan (with my son Makalu when he was 9 years old), to some big scary climbs in Alaska and the Himalaya, to kayaking off glaciers with huge katabatic winds and swells in Antarctica with Makalu when he was 10; to pinning a poem I wrote on the trees – line by line – on the hike up the Grouse Grind for a girl so she would see it on her morning run; or I suppose believing we could create a seismic global shift in construction to address climate change and starting a free global online education program to make that happen. I think maybe I have a long list of crazy……
What did you learn from your most memorable creative failure?
What’s a creative failure? How could anything creative have such a narrow definition of success as to have any possibility of failure?
What’s your one guilty creative indulgence?
Closing my office door, scratch that; having an office door.
What are you reading these days?
Several things;
Educated by Tara Westover,
Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek,
Conquistadors of the Useless by Lionel Terray
What fact about you would surprise people?
I have very nice looking feet and….. that I am an introvert.
How does your life and career compare to what you envisioned for your future when you were a sixth grader?
It is exactly the career I might have hoped for in grade six…. or better. It is also full of the same youthful optimism, beliefs and loves I had then. I feel lucky.
How would you describe what you do in a single sentence to a stranger?
I’m an architect, alpinist, ice climber, woodworker, writer, artist, vegetarian, animal person and dad.
What's the most recent thing you learned (big or small)?
New Math: As + (2xWw) = Hache
(An Aperol spritz + two glasses of white wine = a headache this morning)
If I could open a door and go anywhere where would that be?
My grandpa’s woodshop in 1984 just before he died. It was heaven for me to sit with him with the smell of wood and stories softly told about a world I was yet to know.
What keeps you awake at night?
The crazy lady that lives next door. Seriously.
What myths about creativity would you like to set straight?
That some people are creative and others are not. I believe all kids in early elementary school demonstrate creativity but that slowly we take from many as they grow up through our schools.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?
My grandfather – my mom’s dad. He was a historian, woodworker and climber. He, at one point, was the head of the American Historical Society and a deep scholar, and yet his best friend in life when he died was a 90 year old farmer with a grade 3 education. I have always loved my grandfathers commitment to all things and the way he never saw the world in layers and never valued anyone for the degrees on their wall or the ‘achievements’ society might adorn them. People are people and they all matter. Its profoundly important to actually see all people and not look past anyone; everyone has a life to share and good things for the world.
What are you proudest of in your life?
My kids; Makalu and Elsa. They are my loves.
If you could interview anyone living or dead, but not a celebrity, who would it be and why?
My dad’s dad. He died in the second world war. He was a surgeon and for a year was apparently the young doctor for Balmoral Castle meaning he may have looked after Queen Elizabeth when she was a little girl visiting Scotland… we don’t really know. My family have a tradition of adventure and I would love to know more about my grandfather and his parents and grandparents. My dad was only 6 when his father died so I don’t know much. My father immigrated to the Canadian arctic and learned to speak Inuktitut, living his own life of adventure. I would love to know more about the roots of this spirit. I feel part of a lineage of adventurers; my creative spirit and my physical life are rooted in it. I think our heroes reside within us in the stories we create as much as the stories they offer. I’m interested in the seeds planted for me and how they inform the seeds I will plant.
If you could do anything now, what would you do?
I can do anything now. We all can. That’s what is so amazing about life.
Where was the last place you travelled?
This fall has been insane with public lectures; Geneva, Copenhagen, Halifax, Helsinki, Oslo, Madrid
And then there were trips for projects too…..California, NY etc
And fun trips; Montreal, Vermont and New York, Cannes, Monaco, Paris, Bern
Technically the last place would be last week in New York City where I had a meeting with a new client in Mies Van Der Rohe’s masterpiece Seagram’s Building.
What music are you listening to these days?
This morning’s playlist
“Hold Strong”
- Bugle
“Bouncing Around the Room”
- Phish
“Everything Goes”
- Broods
“Wildfire”
- Mandolin Orange
“Where Were You”
– Jahmiel
“I and Love and You”
– Avett Brothers
What was the best surprise you’ve experienced so far in life?
A girl liked me, actually if you add them up so far in life like 4 did!
Where is your favourite place to escape?
My property on Salt Spring Island; I chop wood, build, kayak, hike and mostly just reconnect with myself in the trees and on the ocean. I am happiest with dirty fingernails and scratches on my legs. My kids and I share a family motto
“He who dies with the most scars wins”.
Salt Spring is my place to pull ahead in the race.
What was the best advice you were ever given?
All things are possible.
I believe this as a simple truth and from that I have come to believe that
it is every parent’s job to tell their children they can change the world; but first it’s our job to show them.
What books made a difference in your life and why?
Let my People Surf; Yvon Chouinard
My hero in many ways; from climbing to environment to business practices; enduring inspiration for running my practice.
Endurance; Alfred Lansing
Shackleton’s Antarctica trip; Defining leadership and extraordinary bravery.
Charlottes Web; EB White
Deep love, friendship, honour, integrity and heroism. Why I believe in speaking for those who can not speak for themselves and why I don’t eat animals.
Travels with Charlie; Steinbeck
Wanderlust and solitude with his dog Charlie; simple, quiet, pure; Steinbeck was dying and capturing what matters most to live.
What practises, rituals or habits contribute to your creative work?
I take baths, I walk on the beach or forest daily, I look for moments of quiet to recharge and I let my heart be open to all possibility
When you get stuck creatively, what is the first thing you do to get unstuck?
I don’t think I am supposed to say this out loud but to be honest this isn’t a thing for me. I have so many balls in the air that I move quickly and creativity thankfully is never in short supply.
If you had fifteen extra minutes each day, what would you do with them?
Snuggle Fisher and Luna – my two dogs (one of whom was born a cat but identifies as a dog)
What has been one of your biggest Aha! moments in life?
There is nothing stopping us from solving the world’s greatest challenges other than an assumption that someone else will.
What object would you put in a time capsule that best represents who you are today?
A pen, and a blank piece of paper. There is always something yet to write, draw, teach, explore, learn and create.
What is the one movie or book every creative must see/read?
Book
Leo Lionni; Little Yellow Little Blue
Movie
Quadrophenia
by the Who
What is the one question we haven’t asked that you want to answer?
What is the deepest motivation in my work.
The answer is LEGACY; the duty and beauty in serving generations beyond our own.

In celebration of the 100 year anniversary of the first recordings by Zabelle Panosian this month.
Zabelle (sometimes Zabella) Panosian was born in Bardizag (present-day Bahçecik, Turkey) on June 7, 1891. She emigrated to the U.S. in April 1896 and married the photo-engraver Aram Sarkis Panosian, 12 years her senior. She lived in Brookline, Mass., from 1908 until at least 1920. During that time, she sang with the Boston Opera Company. (In 1918, she recorded "Charmant Oiseux" - "Charming Birds" - from Felicien David's La Perle du Bresil, the only song she recorded in any language other than Armenian and which had been recorded by, among others, Luisa Tetrazzini in 1911, who had also sung with the short-lived Boston Opera Company.)
In April, 1917, she recorded five songs in Columbia’s studios in the Woolworth building on Broadway and was given the exceptional luxury of recording as many as seven takes during her recording sessions. It was common practice to record no more than three takes of any given performance by immigrant musicians, and the vast majority of recordings for Columbia's E (ethnic) series were made in one or two takes.
We do not know whether she had any relationship with her peer Torcom Bezazian, who began recording for Columbia with success in February, 1915 and released nearly 80 performances on Columbia, Victor, and Edison labels before his recording career ended in 1921. We do know that she was close to the great singer Amenag Chah-Mouradian, having toured with him in the late 10s in benefit of the Near East Relief Campaign. (There is photographic evidence of an appearance by the two of them in Syracuse, NY in 1917.) Chah-Mouradian himself made a string of iconic discs at Columbia’s studios starting in May, 1917.
In 1870, there were fewer than 70 Armenians in the United States. About 100,000 arrived in the U.S. following the Hamidean massacres between 1894 and 1914. Between the onset on WWI and the passing of the Johnson-Reed act (which restricted immigration, allowing only 100 Armenian a year to enter the U.S. until 1952), another 30,000 Armenians arrived. Of those in the U.S., in the mid-10s, most came to the shattering realization that not only was there no longer any home to go to, but that everyone they had left behind was likely dead, as a million Armenians had been slaughtered. Meanwhile, the U.S. formally declared war with Germany on April 6, 1917, and the Ottoman Empire, having sided with Germany, formally severed diplomatic ties with the U.S. on April, 20th.
It was that same month that Zabelle Panosian recorded her first sides, including her masterpiece, Groung. I first heard it about a decade ago on a broken copy of the disc and worked for days, obsessively, to restore it, ultimately publishing it on my compilation To What Strange Place in 2011. Tens of thousands of people have heard it since then, and, as a direct result, it was arranged for strings and played by the Kronos Quartet in both New York and Yerevan a couple of years ago. Even so, little of Zabelle has been paid attention to.
“Groung” was the first of her recordings to be released and far and away her best-seller. Columbia kept it in print through numerous pressings until 1931 when they stopped selling Armenian-language material. It spoke directly to the dilemma of Armenians in the U.S., stranded by the chaos back home. The words are: “Crane, where are you coming from? I am servant of your voice. Crane, have you not news from our country? Hasten not to your flock, you will arrive soon enough! ”
Presented here are five of the six songs she recorded in April, 1917. (The remaining title “Kilikia,” was apparently issued as the B-side of some, but not all, copies of her performance of “Mi Lar Pibool,” the following year.) Also presented are alternate takes of “Groung” and its flip side, which were apparently scheduled for release as relatively expensive 12” discs. 12” copies have not surfaced, if they were ever issued. Instead, we find the performance was issued on 10” discs, nearly identical in appearance to the other take, at a faster speed in order to cram the longer duration on to the sides. (This is the only instance of the practice that I have ever encountered in my 20 years of collecting and studying 78rpm discs; I would be interested to hear of any other examples of this practice.) We have presented these amazing performances at their correct speed. All were given only light restoration and are presented from very good copies of the original discs, recorded almost a decade before the invention of microphones for the benefit of those interested.
She returned to the studio, probably just a few weeks after her April session and recorded one more piece – “Tzain Dour Ov Dzovag,” also presented here – to round out her releases. She recorded only four more sides in June the following year. They did not sell as well.
In 1920, Zabelle Panosian applied for a passport to visit France to study (likely with the great patriarch of Armenian music, Komitas Vadarpet, who composed or arranged at least four of the songs presented here; Harout Arakelian has found a Variety notice stating that she organized a concert at Salle Pleyel in Paris in June, 1922), to Italy to see her brother, and to England and Egypt to “locate lost relatives.” Robert Karayan has noticed that she was profiled, in photo only, in an edition of “Hai Guine” (Armenian Woman), the first feminist bi-monthly journal of Istanbul, founded, published, and edited by Hayganouche Mark from 1919-33. Panosian and her daughter returned through Ellis Island two and a half years later on Jan. 23, 1924, from the port of Cherbourg, France, to her husband at 520 E. 183rd St. in Manhattan. A few years later, she made another trip with her daughter Adiena (or Adrina).
She and her husband had three children. None of them had children themselves, and all of them are dead. Zabelle Panosian died in 1986. Her career was long forgotten. We have, at this point, five photographs of her.
In memory and admiration, 100 years later.
ADDENDUM: Harry Kezelian has just turned up a huge amount of material on Zabelle Panosian (including two new photos - one here: http://ovenk.com/zabel-aram/), starting with his having noticed a bio for her in a 1940 issue of the Armenian language Daroni Ardziv magazine, in which it is made clear that she used the stage name Zabel Aram. From that, he found a bunch of stuff, including her teacher's name (we still need to get the spelling right), and a mind-blowing reference in Marian Mesrobian MacCurdy's book Sacred Justice: The Voices and Legacy of the Armenian Operation Nemesis, stating that Zabelle performed at a 1919 banquet at the Copley Hotel in Boston in honor of a delegation from then-independent Armenia including its Prime Minister Kachaznouni, Calvin Coolidge, Alice Stone Blackwell, and General Antranik. Holding the flag of the Armenian Republic, Zabelle sang "Groong" "to thunderous applause." Photo-documentation apparently exists.
We also now know from Alice Navsargian's Book Armenian Women of the Stage that Zabelle was a huge star in Europe, having toured from London, Manchester, Paris, Greece, Egypt, Geneva, Rome, and Milan, where she received the "Serata in Honore" award at Opera La Scala, among others, and that she had a repertoire that included Schubert, Monteverdi, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, and Rossini. And we know for sure that she met Komitas in Paris in 1920 and wrote about the experience in an article in Veradznoud. So! There must be a lot of documentation about her life and work scattered around archives in Europe as well as in Boston. And! the question is now open - did she record more while she was there under her stage name? Are there more Zabelle Aram/Panosian records? We shall see.
I am humbled and excited.
