CUSTOM CARD CREATION 101
Never submitted a card before? Let's take it from the top.
If you're on desktop, the gold standard of custom card creation is Magic Set Editor. It's a highly customizable program with versatile options for all sorts of card types.
If you're unable to download MSE, there are a number of free online card making programs. They're far less versatile, but they get the job done. You can find one that works best for you.
You can always ask for help in Discord if you don't have either of these options and would like a card rendered as an image by another inventor. Or, you can always submit as text if that works best for you!
If you're submitting as text, or if you just need a general checklist of things to have before you submit, make sure your card has ALL of the following:
Appropriate/final name
Properly formatted mana cost (if applicable)
Type(s)
Rarity (THIS ONE IS THE MOST OVERLOOKED)
Rules text—no typos, modern wording
Flavor text (if applicable/if there's space)
Power/toughness, if a creature
There are a number of options for ART as well. Art is one of the most recognizable part of any MTG card. Most of us are, assumedly, not professional illustrators. So:
MTG artist Winona Nelson made this fabulous post talking about art descriptions and art direction! You can add that to your post in lieu of actual art.
When adding art descriptions with images, it's easiest for formatting to add them directly to where the art would be. Here's an example:
Or! Do you want to draw your own art? Please do so! We strongly encourage everyone at any artistic skill level to submit with their own illustrations!
Just don't forget: if you're using any kind of visual, you need to have the art properly credited—and that includes yourself.
Otherwise... It's been common practice across the custom MTG community for a while to use fantasy art from across the internet. Pragmatically, as long as it's credited, there's no monetary harm as this is a non-commercial use of art. However, reposting in general isn't exactly kosher and isn't the best practice, and many card creators have tiptoed around that line. If you're able to get permission from outside art, please do so.
Regardless of your personal stances: submissions that use uncredited art will not be accepted. Even if it's fair use, even if it's a stock photo or game asset, even if it's your own art (and we'll remind you gently about that one, a lot of folks forget lol), all art must be credited.
Fair Use/Stock photos & illustrations: Most stock images have usernames of uploaders. Always look for the OP. This includes things like Wikimedia Commons as well.
Game Assets/art: When in doubt, credit the name & developer.
AI generated art is never allowed.
If there's a corner case not included on here, just send in an ask and we can answer it.
For rules text questions, You can use Scryfall to check oracle text for proper wording and other examples of weird wording effects if necessary. This includes keyword orders, if/when clause differences, and more. "Oracle text" is the most up-to-date wording for any given card. Need an example? Check out the card Necromancy.
Flavor text is the most esoteric and hard-to-pin-down aspect of any given card. As a rule of thumb, if you have the space to add it, you should strongly consider it. A strong twist can turn a decent card into a great card.
There are quite a few different kinds of flavor text:
Twists on common phrases/sayings that relate to the card, including puns
Quotes from the characters being depicted
Quotes from other characters in the world
Snippets of story before/during/after the action of the card
When writing flavor text, consider: What does that text add to the card that the mechanics, name, and/or art aren't already telling the player? Why does it matter?
N.B.—when adding quote attribution on MSE, use shift+enter to remove the line spacing before the emdash.
Last reminder: Please do not submit Universes Beyond cards and/or silver-border/acorn cards unless a contest specifically calls for it. Unless otherwise specified/implied, assume that all contests are looking for you to design cards for standard/premier play.
Most importantly, don't forget that we're expecting a lot of you from these cards, because you're doing all parts of the process—mechanics, editing, and presentation. Polish up as much as you can. You're wearing a lot of hats here, and it's hard work! But be proud of what you make, and embrace the challenge.

Tom: …the Carlos part of it was: a week before that - or recently - just before that I was - Mo and I were watching Once, the Broadway show -
Seth/James: With Carlos?
Tom: Do you remember? You remember how that went? You got to go - unlike many Broadway shows you’re actually on stage playing the -
Seth/James: [unintelligible]
Tom: because it’s [unintelligible] playing the [unintelligible] and they’re playing.
Tom: And you know how that thing is when somebody has a charisma and the dynamism, your eyes are drawn to them? Well, I’m watching this long-haired guy - Carlos, what’s the thing that you bang? What was that thing called?
Carlos: A cajon?
Tom: You know that bong? Yeah! That - that. And he’s got the - the - the fiddle - he’s got ten different instruments, and I’m like, ‘who is this little genius?’ You know what I mean? Like, I was just like, [unintelligible, possibly the beeped off "fuck"].
Tom: At halftime you could also go up on stage and we tried to like mingle with him, and he’s just like - he had so much ability. We were like ‘this - this guy’s stunning’, and then Greg’s like ‘I think we got a guy for Cisco’, and it was like WHAT! [Tom laughs] It’s that guy?!
Tom: It was - it was absolutely just a beautiful marriage of - of theater and film event, and literally Carlos is - I know we talk a lot about Lin Manuel all the time, with due respect ‘cause he’s fabulous - Carlos has got that same ability, and everyone on the screen can attest to that. He’s just musically, theatrically, acting-wise, he’s got the kind of thing that is just a rarity in terms of a triple threat. And to be able to spend time with these guys daily and have - and watch Grant dance, and have Carlos do his thing, it’s just - it’s a pleasure.
Carlos: It’s just - this is what I love about Tom. He gets so generous during these interviews, and it’s actually just deflection, that's what it is.
Grant: I literally heard none of that. Like I just can’t -
Tom to Grant: I complimented you.
Carlos: He can’t hear that either.

So, thoughts on the Fall Formal outfits for the Humane 5 + Twilight, Flash, Trixie, Snips, Snails, CMC, Diamond Tiara, and Silver Spoon in the first EQG movie?
Okay fall formal outfits:
Twilight - Pretty okay. A little generic. I think she could've gone with something a touch more regal since part of her story arc is accepting her role as Princess and Leader. But they wanted everyone in short skirts and all.
Pinkie - I love this one actually. Layers, bows, the hat? A lot better fitting. My only suggestion would once again be 'More!!' but I understand the limitation of keeping her simple for animation
Rarity - Fabulous as always! I kinda wish she had a necklace though.
Applejack - I..... look. The Fall Formal is one of the times I'm down for AJ wearing a dress of her own accord but... that's- that's not a vibe at all. It's trying way too hard. Jean dress and apples everywhere.
Rainbow - Once again she suffers from the design team wanting to put her in rainbow-colored outfits. I like the style of it decently for 'she has to wear a dress', but I'd love for them to let her have a more solid colors.
Fluttershy - Real cute! I think she should have sleeves, but it's still a vibe!
Sunset - Did not wear a different outfit for the formal. Of the three we see in her photos of previous wins, I like the first one best and the third the least.
Flash - Pretty generic suit tbh, but he's the sexy lamp at a school dance so it works!
Trixie - I can't find any images of her at the Fall Formal, and I don't feel like scouring the background right now.
Snips and Snails - Wearing a tuxedo print shirt/adding a bowtie to your default outfit with a tophat? Peak freshman energy.
CMC - why are they all in pinks?? I think if you adjust the colors to be more personal it'd work for Bloom and Belle. Scoots is entirely too frilly tho
Diamond and Silver - I wish we got to see what the actual color scheme for them is because I can only find images of them in funky lighting, but I love both their dresses on them

The Ultimate Guide to Buying Gold Coins and Protecting your Wealth
Introduction: - Gold coins, of course, are a good investment in protecting your long-term financial future. Gold coins are always associated with the notion of wealth and security, which have served as valuable assets for many years now. Being either a first-time investor or even an old seasoned investor, the appeal of gold coins never differs from one person to another. Within this blog post, we will discuss various issues related to gold coin for sale, how they determine Gold Coins Price, and how it would be a wise addition to the investment portfolio. The appeal of gold coins: -
Such riches in gold coins have been a treasure for their intrinsic value and beauty for many thousands of years. From the first coins ever produced in ancient civilizations to bullion in this contemporary era, gold has always been a safe and stable store for the protection of one's wealth. Among the main reasons why one buys gold coins, their physical existence is at the top. Paper currencies or stocks cannot be physically held, whereas one can really hold a gold coin, which would be passed on to generations.
While purchasing coin for sale, there are several considerations. All the more purity of gold, the scarcer a coin is or the more historical significance may be added to the price. The common tendency of such investors will be on coins, like the American Gold Eagle or the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, known for its purity and quick liquidity. However, most collectors opt for rare or the few collected coins since they can be valued more for their rarity and collectible value.
Understanding the Value of Gold Coins: -
First and foremost, before one may choose to buy any type of gold coin, it is vital to know the price of a gold coin. The price of a gold coin is essentially firm by its content of gold, usually measured in troy grains. Most gold coins are made from 0.9999 or 24-karat pure gold, but some are alloyed with other metals to give it strength.
Prices change according to the current market trends in the world and economic changes, and of course, through supply and demand. With the reasons mentioned, gold coins value changes day to day. Basically, investors review the spot price of gold: that is the price for which one ounce of gold is paid currently. Of course, the worth of a coin depends on weight and purity. But, for instance, extremely rare and often historic numismatic coins will likely sell much higher than others weighing the same weight and purity.
An example is that today's gold coin might be only as valuable in terms of gold content, but an older, or a rare, coin would have value due to relative scarcity, grade, and collector demand. In this situation, the man must keep informed about market trends and gain advice from more experienced dealers so he can buy gold coins whose value is likely to be stable or appreciative.
Tips for Buying Gold Coins: -
In looking for a coin for sale, a good dealer, whether online or in person, is essential to ensure the authenticity of the coin for its purchase. Online or in person, each coin must be certified and properly documented. The majority of dealers also have insurance on the investment to be shipped, adding one more layer of security to the purchase.
It makes sense to invest in gold coins for the long term. First, most of the investments had always been backed by a history of hedging off inflation and even devaluation of the currency at large. Secondly, usually with increased uncertainties associated with economic instability, more and more demand tends to increase their value. Based on that context, investing in coins gold will be fabulous pertaining to investment diversification to safe money invested while in unstable conditions in the market.
Conclusion
That's the way one could perceive this investment as, in some respects, a move not exactly as a strictly financial play, but it could also give you a slice of history with your assets secured. So, if you are searching for a coin for sale, or just wish to find the value of Gold Coins, it is quite evident that you should do some research and step into the market aware of what you are actually getting. By choosing reputable dealers, tracking gold prices, and considering both bullion and numismatic coins, you can make informed decisions that will benefit your financial future for years to come.

Summary:
My name is Scarlette Melody. I was born on Earth, and pushed into a statue outside my high school. I woke up as a unicorn in another world! A pony named Princess Celestia found me. I explained my situation to her, and she let me stay at her castle until the portal re-opened, but I like this world a lot more than my old world. I became friends with Celestia's star pupil Twilight Sparkle, and I was sent with her to Ponyville for the Summer Sun Celebration, where I met familiar ponies. I had never met them before, but they reminded me of my friends at school in my world, even sharing the same names and personalities! We soon became became the Elements of Harmony, and I'm the element of Empathy.
**AO3 & Wattpad links in masterpost pinned to the top of the blog**
A/N: I'm skipping Call of the Cutie since it's a CMC episode.
Since it's getting closer to the Gala, I decide to go to Rarity's to ask her to help me pick out a dress for the occasion, finding Twilight already there. We both wait in silence, watching Rarity use her sewing machine.
Applejack knocks on the boutique's door, exclaiming, "Howdy, Rarity!"
Twilight and I shush her, and Twilight whispers, "Can't you see Rarity is trying to concentrate?"
Applejack whispers, "What do ya think she's makin'?"
I peek around Rarity, responding, "Looks like a dress."
Applejack whispers, "Well, that makes sense, since this is a dressmaker's shop and all."
Rarity turns her head toward us, asking passive-aggressively, "Is there something I can help you with?"
Twilight, being the first to enter the boutique, goes first, saying as she reveals a frumpy, worn dress, "Oh, so very sorry to trouble you, Rarity, but I need a quick favor. Could you please fix the button for me? It's my dress for the Grand Galloping Gala."
Rarity gasps at the sight of the dress, exclaiming, "Oh, no, no, no! You can't wear this... old thing. You need a glamorous new outfit for the Gala, and I'll make it for you. No problem at all. It would be my pleasure!"
Twilight says, "Oh, that's really sweet of you to offer, Rarity, but I can't let you do that. It would be so much work. This dress is fine."
Rarity says, "Twilight Sparkle, I insist on making you a new dress."
Twilight protests, "But..."
Rarity says, "Not another word! I won't take no for an answer."
Twilight says, "Well, in that case... thank you for your generosity, Rarity. Knowing your handiwork, I'm sure it will be absolutely beautiful."
Rarity turns to me, asking, "And what about you, Miss Melody?"
I say, "Me? Oh, I don't need you to make me a dress, I was just hoping you could help me pick out a good one that you already have."
Rarity says, "Oh, nonsense. If you're looking for a dress anyways, we might as well make it fabulous, darling!"
I sigh, knowing I can't change her mind, saying, "Alright. I trust you'll make a good dress for me."
Rarity turns to AJ, saying, "Let me guess, Applejack. You don't want a new gown either."
Applejack raises an eyebrow, asking, "Gown? Shoot. I was just gonna wear my old work duds."
Rarity exclaims, "You can't possibly be serious, Applejack! You absolutely must wear formal attire."
Applejack thinks about it for a second, then says, "Hm... nah."
Rarity compromises, asking, "What if I just spruce up your... duds... for you a little bit?"
Applejack responds, "Um... Okay, sure, why not? Since you're up for it and all. Just don't make them too... frou-frou-y."
Rarity smiles, saying, "Deal!"
Suddenly, Rainbow yells out, "Look out below!" She crashes into the boutique, saying, "Sorry. New trick. Didn't quite work."
I mutter, "No kidding."
Rarity exclaims, "Idea! I'll make you an outfit for the Gala, too, Rainbow Dash!"
Rainbow asks, "Outfit for the what now?"
I sigh, saying, "You know, the one where you tried stealing tickets from Applejack so you could show your tricks to the Wonderbolts?"
Rainbow says, "Oh yeah."
Rarity points at each of us, saying, "I'll make one for you, and you, and you, and all of you. Oh! And of course Pinkie and Fluttershy, too. Oh, and when I'm done, we can hold our very own fashion show!"
Twilight exclaims, "What a great idea!"
I add, "Of course, only if you're sure you can handle it."
Rarity says, "Oh, it'll be a bit of work, but it will be a wonderful boost for my business. Plus, fun!"
Rainbow says, "Oh, I love fun things!"
Rarity says, "Then it's settled. We'll have a fashion show starring us!"
We cheer at the idea, and Applejack asks, "So all you have to do is make a different, stunning, original, amazing outfit for one, two, three, four, five, six - plus yourself - seven ponies? And lickety-split?"
Rarity scoffs playfully, saying, "Oh, Applejack. You make it sound as if it's going to be hard."
She sends us off, and surprisingly only takes a few days to make our dresses.
The six of us meet up at her boutique to see our new dresses, and she makes us close our eyes as she leads us to her workroom, saying, "That's it. Keep them closed. Don't look. Okay, you can look now!" We all gasp at the sight, and Rarity says, "These are your new outfits. What do you think of your old dudes now, Applejack? Pretty swanky, are they not? And Twilight! I made this dress for you, and I designed each outfit theme to perfectly reflect each pony's unique personality."
She gestures at my dress, which is a deep purple, and the skirt is shorter than I would like.

She says, "Oh, it took me forever to get the colors right on this one, Scarlette, but I did it. Oh, and it turned out beautiful, don't you think? And I know you are going to love yours, Fluttershy. It just sings spring! And Pinkie Pie, look! Pink! Your favorite! Aren't they all amazing?"
We all pause, looking at each other for something to say to not upset Rarity when it seems like none of us got the dress we were hoping for.
Twilight starts, "Wow... they're..."
Rainbow adds, "Yeah, they're..."
Applejack adds, 'They sure are... somethin'."
I say, "Yeah, that's the word. Something."
Pinkie exclaims, "I love something! Something is my favorite!"
Fluttershy says, "It's... nice."
Rarity must've noticed our wierd behavior, asking, "But what's the matter? Don't you like them?"
Twilight says, "They're very nice..."
Applejack adds, "And we're plumb grateful 'cause ya worked so hard on 'em."
I add, "And I do like the colors on mine, but..."
Rainbow bluntly states, "Mine's just not as cool as I was imagining." We all look at her in shock at saying what we were all trying not too, and she just says, "She asked."
Twilight says, "I guess what we're all saying is that they're just not what we had in mind."
We all nod our heads, muttering our aggrement at her statement."
Rarity sighs, saying, "That's okay. Not a problem. There's plenty more where that came from. They were only a first pass. You're my friends, and I want you to be one hundred and ten percent satisfied."
I ask, "Really? You'd do that?"
Rarity responds, "Not to worry. I'll redo them."
Fluttershy says, "Oh, Rarity. You don't have to do that. They're fine."
Rarity says, "I want them to be better than just fine! I want you to think they're absolutely perfect."
Applejack asks, "Are ya sure? I mean, we wouldn't wanna impose."
Rarity says, "Oh, it's no imposition! Really, I insist."
Twilight says, "Well, in that case... thank you again, Rarity."
The six of us turn to leave, Rarity politely waving a hoof at us. Over the next few days, she calls each of us in individually to discuss what we want her to do with our dresses. When she gets to me, I pick out a soft, pale blue fabric for the main color, and ask her to make the bottom of the dress look like piano keys, since my whole thing is music and blue is my favorite color. At the end of the week, she's got six new dresses for us.

She leads us back into her workroom, saying, "Okay. I did exactly what each of you asked for. Now, don't hold back. Let me know what you really think."
Twilight exclaims, "Oh, my!"
Fluttershy adds, "It's... perfect!"
Rainbow adds, "It's cool!"
I add, "More than that, it's amazing!"
Applejack says, "Why, they're the best duds I ever did see."
We all exclaim in unison, "It's exactly what I asked for!"
Rarity sighs, and Twilight says, "Thank you, Rarity."
Pinkie asks excitedly, "Are you as happy with them as we are? Huh? Huh? Huh?"
Rarity responds, "Well, I'm... happy that all of you are happy. I'm just relieved to finally be done."
The door opens and Spike rushes in, exclaiming, "You are never gonna believe this! You've heard of Hoity Toity?"
I ask, "That fancy fashion guy back in Canterlot?"
Spike nods, saying, "Uh-huh! He heard about your fashion show. Well, maybe I happened to mention it to him... He's coming here all the way from Canterlot to see your work, Rarity!"
Applejack exclaims, "Whoa, Nelly! You could sell a ton o' dresses to this guy. Your business'll be boomin'!"
I add, "This could be your shot to really make it big as a fashion designer!"
Twilight exclaims, "Wow!"
Rainbow adds, "That's so cool!"
Pinkie adds, "I don't believe it!"
Rarity asks, "Hoity Toity? He's coming here? To see these dresses?"
Spike responds, "Yup! Get ready for all of your dreams to come true."
Just as we'd planned last week, we have our fashion show, starring us, later the same day our dresses were finished.
Spike announces at the lights dim to signal the start of the show, "Since the beginning of time, the elite of Equestria have longed for pony fashions that truly expressed the essence of their very sounds. Patiently waiting decades - no, centuries - for the perfect party gown. Today, at long last, Equestria, your wait is over! Let's hear it for the breathtaking designs of Ponyville's own... Rarity!"
The six of us models walk out onto the runway, then stand in our respective positions on a rotating platform, the ponies below giving us odd looks and murmuring among themselves.
I start feeling self-concious, whispering to my friends, "Why's everypony looking at us like that?"
Twilight looks down at her outfit, muttering, "Oh, dear."
Rainbow asks, "You think we overdid it?"
Applejack responds, "Nah."
I whisper to her, "You're wearing rain boots and it's not even raining."
Applejack looks down at her hooves, then corrects herself, "Okay, maybe a little."
Hoity Toity, a grey earth pony with a lighter grey flounced mane and tail, sits on a pillow as he scoffs, "Oh, those amateurish designs look like a piled-on mishmash of everything but the kitchen sink! The only semi-tolerable dress is the music-themed one, but it's colors clash awfully with the pony wearing it! It's a travesty is what it is. Those outfits are the ugliest things I've ever seen. Oh, for shame! Who is responsible for subjecting our eyes to these horrors? Not to mention wasting my valuable time."
Spike, apparently not noticing how rude Hoity Toity was being, exclaims, "Come on out and take a bow, Rarity! You worked really hard for this." She slowly walks out onto the runway from behind the curtain she was hiding behind, her head held low as Spike cheers, "Yes! Alright! Woo-hoo! Go, Rarity!"
After what happened at the fashion show, I heard whispers of mockery from ponies around town everywhere I went, all directed at Rarity. But every time I try to defend her, I get mocked as well for being one of the models who wore such an awful dress. I feel bad that we made Rarity design those horrible things, but I haven't seen her all week. After expressing my concern with the others, we all decide to go over to Rarity's to try to help her.
Pinkie knocks on Rarity's bedroom door, asking, "Rarity? You okay in there?"
I add, "You haven't come out for days; we're starting to get worried."
We can hear Rarity exclaim from the other side of the door, "I'm never coming out! I can't show my face in Ponyville ever again! I used to be somepony. I used to be respected. I made dresses. Beautiful, beautiful dresses! But now every pony is laughing at me. I'm nothing but a laughing stock!"
She starts sobbing, and Twilight says, "You're not a laughing stock, Rarity..."
Rainbow bluntly states, "She kinda is."
I whisper-shout to her, "Shut it, Rainbow! It was your bluntness that started this whole thing!"
Twilight shushes the both of us, saying to Rarity, "Come on out and talk to us."
Rarity exclaims through sobs, "Leave me alone! I want to be alone! I want to wallow in... whatever it is that ponies are supposed to wallow in! Do ponies wallow in pity? Oh, listen to me; I don't even know what I'm supposed to wallow in! I'm so pathetic!"
Twilight asks as we descend the stairs to Rarity's workshop, "Now what do we do?"
Fluttershy suggests, "Uh... panic?"
Rainbow exclaims, "Well, we can't just leave Rarity like this."
Pinkie exclaims, "She'll become a crazy cat lady!"
Twilight says, "She only has one cat."
I ask, "And how's she supposed to get more cats if she never leaves her bedroom?"
Pinkie responds, "Give her time."
Twilight stares at a dress design that Rarity was working on, saying, "Hmm..."
I ask, "What is it, Twi?"
She responds, "It's just... Rarity never got to finish her dress because she was so busy working on making ours exactly how we wanted them, instead of the amazing ones she made in the first place."
I say, "But what can we do about that? It's not like any of us know how to sew. I mean, I knew how to in my world, but it was mostly just patchwork for fixing my clothes. I don't know any advanced stitches like the ones Rarity uses."
Fluttershy quietly says, "Um, I might know a thing or two about sewing."
Over the next hour, we follow Rarity's detailed drawing to finish her dress exactly how she wanted it to make it up to her, Fluttershy acting like an enciplopedia of sewing knowledge in helping us with the complex stitching.
Once we're done, I ask, "How are we supposed to bring her down her to show her the dress? We'll never get her to come down here."
Rainbow smirks, saying, "I've got it. Just bring the dress outside and I'll take care of the rest."
She ends up bringing Opalescense, Rarity's cat outside, placing her high in a tree just outside Rarity's bedroom window.
When the cat starts meowing loudly for help, we hear Rarity exclaims worriedly, "Hang on, you poor dear! Mama's coming!"
She rushes outside, only spotting Rainbow atop the tree with her cat.
She gasps, asking angrily, "Rainbow Dash?! How dare you strand my poor Opal in a tree?!"
Rainbow responds, "Well, how else were we gonna get you out here to show you this?"
Rarity asks, "What is it?" She finally notices us at the base of the tree with her finished dress on the mannequin, and she mutters, "It's not... you..."
She gasps again, and I say, "To make it up to you for making you design those awful dresses for us..."
Pinkie adds, "We all finished your dress for you."
Applejack adds, "Thanks to Fluttershy's freaky knowledge of sewing."
Fluttershy asks, "Do you like it?"
Rarity asks, "Like it? Like it?!"
Fluttershy cowers, muttering, "Uh oh, she doesnt' like it."
Rarity turns her head, saying, "No, I don't like it."
We all mutter, "Aw..."
Rarity turns back to us, exclaiming happily, "I love it!"
We cheer, "Yay!"
Rarity says, "You ponies did an amazing job! It's exactly the way I imagined it."
Fluttershy says, "We just followed your brilliant design."
I say, "Like we should've let you do in the first place. We should've just trusted the designer to make the perfect designs for us."
Twilight adds, "Those first dresses you designed were perfect."
Pinkie says, "We're super sorry."
Rainbow says, "You worked really hard to make our dresses exactly the way we wanted them. We all saw how well that turned out."
Rarity says, "Oh, I forgive you."
I ask, "You do?"
Applejack says, "Well, that's mighty big of ya."
Rarity's face droops, and she exclaims, "But my whole career is ruined!"
Applejack nervously says, "Oh, right. That."
Twilight thinks for a moment, then says, "Maybe not. Hoity Toity hasn't left Ponyville yet; maybe we can catch him before he leaves and convince him to let us do another fashion show!"
Spike says, "On it."
He runs off to find the pony, and the rest of us get set up inside the boutique for a second fashion show, getting our original dresses on. Spike was able to get him just in time, the pony sitting down on his pillow just as we're finishing styling our manes and tails.
He says, "Alright, I haven't got all day. Take two." Twilight walks in, and he lowers his glasses, muttering, "Hello... Oh, this can't be the same designer." Applejack enters next, and he exclaims, "Simply magnificent! And I suddenly have a fierce craving for some Dutch apply pie, candied apples on a stick, apple turnovers, apple cobbler..." He trailes off as Pinkie walks in, and he exclaims, "Brilliant!"
I come in next, wearing my imperial magenta purple dress with a halter-top neckline, my mane and tail done in intentionally messy buns, my bangs peeking out at the top.
Hoity Toity says, "Oh, the colors on this one are picturesque!" Rainbow comes out next, and he exclaims, "Oh, spectacular!" Fluttershy comes in as the last of the original models, and he exclaims, "Now, this is a fashion show! All of these dresses are absolutely amazing! Who is responsible? Step forward; show yourself!" Rarity reveals herself in the dress we helped her finish, and he cheers, "Brava! Brava! Magnifico! Encore!"
Rarity says, "Oh, thank you. Thank you! Oh, thank you so much!"
Now that it's evident he liked Rarity's actual designs, Twilight and Spike start writing a letter to Celestia, "Dear Princess Celestia, this week, my very talented friend Rarity learned that if you try to please everypony, you often times end up pleasing nopony, especially yourself. And I learned this; when somepony offers to do you a favor, like making you a beautiful dress, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth."
She giggles at that, and Hoity Toity says, "Rarity, my congratulations to you on a most impressive fashion debut. Would you do me the great honor of allowing me to feature your couture in my Best of the Best Boutique in Canterlot?" Rarity gasps, and he adds, "Now, I'll need you to make a dozen of each dress for me by Tuesday."
Rarity fakes a laugh, and I know she's in for another long week.

Commentary on the commentary continues!
"The start and end of this chapter is mirrored. It’s right there in the title card. The big twist, I just didn’t see it." "her body is rebelling against her, it didn’t listen." Heavy foreshadowing that we don't know is foreshadowing is my jam
Flash confirmed for goodest of boys. But he has some stiff competition who may also be the goodest
"They stumped me on the word castling" - Look up what castling is. I haven't seen anybody catch this so I'm giving it away as a freebie: Castling, in chess, refers to the move where your King and the rook (royal castle) switch places
TACTICAL BREATHING!! ::pumps fist victoriously:: It helps!!
"[Flash and Sunset] both sorta understand each other in this way." Yeah, they do that. Fun fact: Flash has known Sunset the longest aside from Princess Celestia so, make of that what you will!
Vermin could kick the Bone Hydra's many asses. Or singular ass
G: “Would you jump into the mouth of a basilisk if all your friends did?” T: “Well, if they got out and the basilisk spit did wonders for their general complexion and confidence, then yeah I guess I would.” An exchange between Gloriosa and Timber, I presume
That horse statue could be the real cause of everyone's problems all along
Amusing somebody who actually knows what they're talking about is the highest honour. That's also fabulously interesting, to think about what makes a place significant - in magical terms or otherwise!
"Well she didn’t really mention much of the shakes since around the time Twilight came out, save for when Timber went in." You're right! Sunset did stop shaking as much after she did some breathing and held her girlfriend's hand. Don't let her try to convince you she ain't soft
Nothing concerning here, nope!
And yes, can confirm, her body language was absolutely because she subconsciously missed having a hand to hold. I feel like we may have chatted about this once but Sunset's love language might be touch - which only makes the fact that her powers are dependent on touch that much more significant
Rarity would absolutely make her something warm and fabulous! Applejack has made Rarity more practical over the years. And yeah, Sunset's leather jacket is like her security blanket. Just looks a lot cooler than walking around high school with a blankie
I feel like Solstice does a good job putting people at ease, yeah - he's been afraid for a long time! He wouldn't want that for them! But he definitely doesn't go to church. He used to worry he would burn in there until proven otherwise, but he's still not fond
As I may have said in the sports chapter - I went to a sports high school. I'm roasting sports schools out of love
"Combining the concerned pseudo-parent and rebellious teenager is a recipe for a glorious disaster named Sombra" He's got many sides to him! Protective Dad and terrifying monster could in fact be the same side
"Just like 'mom' used to make~" Aww, yeah - they had a private chef staff for most everything else, but the Princess brewed Sunset teas herself
Solstice has so many opinions about beverages!!
"I anticipate foreshadowing here." Me? Never.....
Okay, 1) Who says you're not Marvel Prime? I might be Marvel Beta! 2) Why, yes, it is good to know about immediate danger :D for reasons!
Bevin made some cool ass choices with the art, yeah!! Very noir!
"I’ll admit I don’t know what that thing is in the right side of the first pic and left side of the second pic." You're seeing a shot-reverse-shot. That's the other person's arm!
"Can’t take this fore-shadow-ing." :D
"Solstice is no longer acting. He’s never had the chance to actually be his true self until an opportunity like this presented itself." Damn, well-said! Exceedingly true!!
End of part I indeed!! The fact that chapter 11 needed to be split in 2 delights me - we've only just begun!
EftD Chapter 11 – The Devil in Canterlot High Part 1
I’d just like to say. What the fuck.
Also, this commentary in particular had me doublebacking a lot, so I’m doing it acknowledging that I know the Chapter's end. Also I’m remembering so many actual terms for the literary devices used but alas, I’ll leave the accuracy be for the time being. Also I decided to break this one up so it’s not the tumblr equivalent of 17 Word Doc pages in a row.
Sunset Shimmer shivered from head to toe and couldn’t hide it even if she tried. And she tried. If she could at all avoid her friends seeing her like this, she would. It came in spasmodic spurts, with only seconds of control in between, starting from her legs or arms and rocking up to her core. She took in shallow, longing-to-be-deep breaths to steady herself, but, as if to rebel against her, her body didn’t listen.
First off, great start really sets the mood for the rest of the time Sunset’s going to be here. Absolutely dead-on with how it goes. The start and end of this chapter is mirrored. It’s right there in the title card. The big twist, I just didn’t see it. Even more obvious since we haven’t been seeing Sunset without something filtering her true feelings and self! But now, right there with that paragraph and the end of that first sentence – her body is rebelling against her, it didn’t listen. It can’t listen because it’s under Sombra’s control. Or soon will be.
It made her love them for trying—seriously, on a level she’d only thought possible recently—
AH!
Time spent with her favourite boys - even in totally-not-really-therapy-wink-wink - is working!
“... and I guess, I dunno, I just want to help so bad…”
GOODEST OF BOYS
He’s good. I think we’ll finally have this solved.”
I initially read this as “He’s good at being a therapist”, but I also like seeing how it could be interpreted as “He’s just genuinely a good guy”, which he is!
Flash stared at her for a second, the reels rewinding in his head almost so viscerally she could hear the sputtered squeal, and then he smiled. “Oh. I got third. They stumped me on the word castling because I thought it had an e in there somewhere, but I was super proud I could be so brave. My dad took me out for ice cream afterwards.”
A cutie mark origin story if there was one for this Flash! And just another thing to note. Even though Sunset genuinely seems cold, it’s also symbolic of her fear.
Sometimes the Princess would even let her sit on the throne.
;~;
Flash took that as a permission slip to start monologuing aloud about tactical breathing: in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. Of course, the music nerd in him counted it out like a 2/4 time signature. He even performed a demonstration of what that might look like, breathing to a beat of his own making.
Ngl, a while back I started reading this chapter. Then some shit happened, and I had to drive alone for 2 hours. It was a very emotional drive, and my adrenaline had me much more awake than I needed, but my mind came back to this bit. Kept me calm and kept my driving safe. Thank you for this <3.
Sunset let him. She thought she’d managed this breathing thing pretty well on her own all these years, she didn’t need a How to Guide. While the shakes didn’t stop entirely, she managed to calm them down to a level she hoped wouldn’t be perceptible.
I’m glad Sunset did let him, instead of saying to his face that she didn’t need a how-to guide. They both sorta understand each other in this way. Flash literally just said he wants to help so bad, but Sunset also didn’t want to be perceived as not being okay. Much more didn’t want anyone to say it out loud. So, he’s helping by telling her how to breathe when you have nerves but not pointing out directly that she seems nervous. Saying things out loud just hits so much harder. Guess that’s part of the point of therapy!
The door hung open after her like the toothy maw of a basilisk salivating strands of venom and ready to devour a fresh victim whole.
Speaking of perception… she’s really not perceiving this as a good thing lol. Cold shaking, shaking in fear like a helpless little mouse. And an actual mouse. NOT a ‘Tiny Vermin’. There’s a reason that boss is up a level after the Bone Hydra.
And Sunset would have been happy to continue staring off into the middle-distance, unreachable, but then, Timber Spruce slapped his hands on his knees, got up from his chair, and said, “You know what? Why not? Let’s get magical. I’ve got a few things to say.”
Sunset looked up then to see Timber send her a tired smirk before disappearing.
Absolute shocker. And absolutely love the way Timber went about this. Sometimes you just gotta dive right into the deep end to get used to the water. And of course, seeing all your friends jump in and then come out fine and in a good mood and the like, and you’re all that more likely to cave to the pressure. Timber especially so since he likes to also feel part of the Rainbooms.
“Would you jump into the mouth of a basilisk if all your friends did?”
“Well, if they got out and the basilisk spit did wonders for their general complexion and confidence, then yeah I guess I would.”
What would he say about her in there? What were they talking about? Closing the portal won’t take long. Ray and Scruffles need me to bring them, I’d have to get them first. If I close the portal, is that it? Could anyone open it again? Would the connection be severed? Would the crack in the sky disappear? What happens here when it’s gone?
She’s still on that?! Not even her girlfriend could convince her otherwise?!
Sunset knew with a cold certainty from her lectures and studies on the Roots of Magic that there was always a source. An origin, a cause.
I do not like that this certainty in particular is cold. Especially not with all the other ‘cold’ things going on. Also, I bet the origin is that damn horse statue in front of City Hall!
…(similar to the human economy, Sunset Shimmer understood little to nothing of human geography—and now she likely never would) ...
As a human geographer who also happens to be human, I find this very humourous. I do NOT recommend searching what I mean, it’s a rabbit hole of confusion and questioning as to geography’s place in academia (but fuck almost all of those Ivy League Universities, you know what university DOES include Geography among one of its VERY FEW master’s and doctorate programs? THE UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY! Guess actually helping people across the world through an interdisciplinary approach towards natural disasters under a changing climate isn't top of mind for them. Yes I'm bitter.)
Also would be funny if Sunset pursued geography as a result of going to NR (which apparently was important to military officer training in WW2).
This also makes the idea of “significant places of sorcery and love” especially interesting to me as a human geographer. We look into the human relationship with space, which we end up calling “place’. We assign value to it when we have this relationship, including emotional value. But these places can have different identities and values depending on the who its relating to.
What goes into those places of sorcery and love? If we think back to the Perfect Pear in the pony episodes, that is an example of assigning emotional value to a place. A place of love, where sorcery emerged, where these powerful interactions of two lovers, forbidden to be with each other but still so committed to being there anyway that they develop a place that was unique to them. But is there any place we’ve seen that could be classified as such in the human realm? Nightfall Reach certainly seems old, perhaps old enough to be classified so. And with Friendship being a core tenet, maybe there’s something there.
There’s likely something around Canterlot High, and that statue. Clearly the statue itself is imbued with magic. But did anything with strong enough love or sorcery exist in that space before the school did? Did it have to? So many relationships made, broken, by so many students coming in and out of that place, connected to a mirror. What other value might have been assigned here, and by whom?
In a small, cold place, she almost found herself excited for them. You go, girls. You’re going to be amazing.
OOF
She didn’t so much as say a word to her girlfriend or Flash before Timber appeared in front of her, hand outstretched.
Damn, I can’t even imagine what Twilight must be thinking after all that. It’s even worse knowing the first conversation after this will be through Sombra.
Sunset flinched and looked to her girlfriend, who sat beside her and, at some point, had taken Sunset’s hand, maybe to steady it. The little circles she revolved with her thumb stopped short.
Awwwwww!
Well she didn’t really mention much of the shakes since around the time Twilight came out, save for when Timber went in.
Solstice emerged from the office and his eyes billowed a ghastly gas-like steam. The crackle of it startled Flash in particular who ripped out of his seat, but neither Twilight nor Timber reacted.
Okay so, a bit of a development! Totally not at all concerning. Also totally not concerning that Twi and Tim are not concerned. sweats
Solstice waited for her like the ferryman at the perilous banks of the River Styx, lantern and steady smile at the ready.
Mouth of Styx starts playing
Sunset walking into hell, to face Hades himself.
Heart walloping against the confines of her ribcage, Sunset had to admit comfortable sounded so nice. Trying to stabilize one of her clammy hands with its partner, she nodded, mumbling, “Yeah, okay. Sure.”
Wow, really missing Twi’s hand, huh?
That made him smile, teeth pale like a full-moon in the shadow of night. Combined with his still demonically slitted eyes, Sunset fought the thought that Solstice looked almost animalistic and focused instead on the gentleness of his voice. “You can zip up your jacket, my dear, I don’t want you to freeze.”
Aaaahhh! Very werewolf-like. Indeed. I can see it be an apt metaphor for Solstice and his condition. The style and grace of the Sombra persona feeling more like a vampire, but the challenge of having something deep inside of you changing and turning you into a monster is something all too familiar for Sunset. The human realm has its own myths and legends, but she likely experienced so many of those myths made real back in Equestria. And, having dressed up like one for Halloween partly being the reason for her perceiving him this way. Or maybe its more of a Jekyll and Hyde thing.
“Tcht. No, see, I’d be offended. It’s kind of my look, so...” She gestured down to her open leather jacket in open rebellion.
Sunset’s willing to freeze before changing her look? Rarity will be so proud. Or disappointed since she could probably make it still warm while being fashionable.
Still, it’s a nice touch – Sunset’s here in her first counselling appointment, where it’s supposed to be a safe space to let yourself be comfortable enough to be honest with yourself and your feelings and the like. Where you can take off that figurative armour, literal in the case of Sunset and her rebellious identity, also being rebellious to the idea of counselling.
“Oh! Yes, that has to be frightfully frigid.”
I don’t like the implied tone here. Yes, the weather inside is frightful, but the other side of Sombra is so very much ALSO frightful. Maybe though, the fire inside that Solstice sets for the students’ souls will be so delightful.
She drank him in in full. It helped her own nerves to see the big bad opponent she was up against wore loafers like he was late for church service, wore his button-down not quite tucked into his belted slacks, and smelled like a coffee shop if it also used a wood stove. “Huh. You actually can’t feel cold?”
The BIG BAD… Churchgoer? More like wolf in sheep’s clothing. With Solstice being like that, it must’ve done both Flash and Timber a lot of good. A safe haven in a cold cold blizzard who emanates the woodsy-ness the latter likes, but speaks so very kindly, as the former would appreciate.
“Heaven knows the central heating could use an upgrade with me around to challenge it, but well. Public school.”
Okay so they can afford the special sports stuff but not heating?! I well… yeah no, that tracks.
But Solstice caught that. “Really, are you sure about your jacket? I wouldn’t want you to catch a cold in my office, I’d never forgive myself.” Sunset’s eyes went for a spin. “Think I’ll find a way to survive your office.”
laughing nervously
Solstice paused long enough to stare at her jacket’s zipper, as if tempted to zip it up himself. If he had telepathy or the sheer force of will, all bets might have been off. With the steam still billowing off his demonic eyes, he looked much angrier about it than he probably actually was. Or maybe it really did vex him that much, Sunset couldn’t say.
Combining the concerned pseudo-parent and rebellious teenager is a recipe for a glorious disaster named Sombra as he feeds on the anger from feeling a lack of control (or what I thought was anger, but is actually fear for her well-being).
Either way, he moved toward the kettle and basket of cookies. “Alright, it’s your decision. But speaking of dire choices: Can I at least get you anything? A hot beverage to keep warm?
Nothing like a hot beverage! Although I think that there should be a better word to define hot beverages than just “hot beverage”. I’ve been trying to get “café drinks” going here and there, but in this day and age? That can mean anything.
Sunset doubted the school counsellor would readily give her access to the type of beverage she really wanted to get through this. Fire down the throat always kept her warm, in a manner of speaking (especially if it was Nectar of the Gods, Sunset’s favourite Equestrian liquor; she’d never forget sneaking her first taste from the pools of Mount Olympus while on diplomatic missions with the Princess. Good times). She shifted on the plump couch cushion. “Tea’s good, if you have any. Camelmile?”
Who wouldn't want some Nectar of the Gods? I'm sure there'll be some at the coronation.
Whenever Sunset had an upset stomach—her codeword for nervousness or feeling upset, honestly—as a filly, Princess Celestia brewed her excellent tea. Trottingham chai, Zebrafrican rooibos, even a nice Griffonstonian oolong after a long day. It got to the point the sound of the kettle boiling in the hearth was enough to ease any irritation.
Just like 'mom' used to make~
Nodding, Solstice smiled around his own shoulder, back at her, setting up the mugs, not unlike a bartender.
Ah yes, the bartender, discount therapist!
His little wooden stirring stick whisked the cup in an erratic fashion. “Warping the minds of the youth with their overpriced... cake coffee. Oh, it sounds delicious, but what you’ve really gone and done is ruined a perfectly good pot of coffee and convinced swarms of innocent teenagers they’ve bought themselves a luxury item!”
He grumbled more into his own mug as he sipped to avoid an overflow before realizing; he swallowed his mutterings down with his coffee. “I have… a lot of feelings about beverages. Wine especially. But I suppose the point was that it’s nice to know I’m not the only ex-career student here.”
Recently I’ve come to appreciate whisky. I enjoyed it before, sure, but now I understand that among the connoisseurs, the best whisky is the one you like, and that includes whiskey ;)
But that does bring me to another observation – Sunset mentioned alcohol in her head before Solstice said it out loud. Foreshadowing about getting in her head? Or is it another point about how much they actually have in common?
It’s wild seeing how much coffee has really taken off though. I see a lot of similarities between wine and coffee connoisseurs. The sheer difference in variety of tastes based on where it’s grown and the conditions that gave rise to it – it’s terroir - and how it’s processed or even what you add to it in each minuscule amount.
Each student technically is a product of their own terroir. Even though the students are all different, they’re also similar in so many ways – that’s why they can empathize with each other despite those different experiences. But of course, with a unique terroir, it’ll get harder and harder to have an accurate read on knowing how someone else is feeling. As a geographer once said, "everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things." People who grew up in one place have much more in common than someone from a different place depending on what's available to them: the culture there, foods available, cost of things in the community, etc. But the processing of the coffee bean or the wine changes that too! As it goes through its life cycle, it started out somewhere, like all its neighbours, but slowly changed along the way as new experiences shaped it, and shaped the person.
And that’s why its important for someone like Solstice to be there. He talks to them and gets into the finer notes and details of people, even with the added sugar. His comment about cake coffee makes me believe he dislikes it because he dislikes how the uniqueness of each cup getting drowned out and taken away by fads among teens, making it harder for them to be open and honest with each other if all they're concerned with is the fad. Cause if you're not open and honest, how can you have an open and honest relationship with one another? With Sunset’s “look”, she’s dressed up like a mocha and refuses to let him or anyone else really know the core of what’s there. All that sugar added drowns out what makes everyone unique and beautiful in their own way. Unless you're a coffee connoisseur among coffee connoisseurs.
That and he's worried about them being manipulated.
“That’s true. I apologize. I don’t know. Call it an educated guess, then,” he told her, carrying over her mug. “Maturity is usually hard-won, much like degrees and education. Or forgiveness.” Solstice offered a smile as he gave her the drink. “Your friends speak very highly of you, Sunset. Your story is something of a legend around here. You are.”
Well at least Sunset has the forgiveness thing under her belt. The former she could get no problem! Just gotta figure out what that will be.
“…I don’t do well with heights, not a fan.”
I anticipate foreshadowing here.
Would it be dramatic to say I’ve got a fear phobia? Sunset thought. “I’ve got a fear phobia. Only thing I fear is fear itself, you know? So if you’re wondering about your eyes, it’s cool, don’t worry about it. I’m not afraid of you.”
Sombra likes to be dramatic and uses fear as his primary weapon. If he’s not fear itself, then I don’t know what is for ya, Sunny.
“I’ll do my best to help you achieve that, then.” Solstice handed her a waiver of some sort, complete with clipboard and pen. “Everything you say here is completely confidential. The only exceptions to that are if I’m required to disclose case-relevant details in a court of law, or, and this is important, if you pose an immediate danger to yourself or others. At which point, I would contact the proper authorities for safety reasons.”
…
The authorities? Celestia, Flash’s dad would kill me if he knew I planned to leave Flash behind again. If Chief Magnus murders me, Flash might find out I’m leaving and try to stop me. “No.”
Including this part so specifically, leads me to believe the reason is twofold:
1. Our most glorious author, Marvel Prime, is presenting the reader with an accurate portrayal of the processes of going to therapy, based on her own knowledge and experience. This in turn, is also useful to anyone reading this in terms of knowing what to expect if they go in.
2. Foreshadowing. The callback back to good ol Detective Daddy-o, Flash Magnus, who probably has a case on her, and just needs a little bit more to bring it to court. The other element of “this is important”, is not just for her, but for the reader to remember. Because she gets body swapped again, she will ultimately pose said immediate danger to herself and others. Also, who knows if “proper authorities” can actually mean Princess Twilight and the crew bringing in some magic-ass kickin’. Seems like the proper authority to me.
Not that she had any plans on re-terrorizing the school or putting everyone’s lives in danger, but Sunset could almost hear the cell-doors clanking shut in front of her.
Wonderfully brought together with the art right in this section too! The shadow of the blinds making it look all too much like cell-doors. Signing her name? Signing her confession…. DUN DUN DUUUN.
“Oh-ho, no. Nope. We’re not doing this, no,” Sunset said, arms barred across her chest like a luxurious stay at the Tartarus Juvenile Detention Centre. “I’m not here to talk about me, I’m here to help my friends change back.”
And prison references continue! It all comes back together. All the Greek mythology references, combined with the justice system, coming together into that – the Tartarus Juvenile Detention Centre being the reason for the references and how this all feels, that she’s ultimately a bad friend and bad person, even if she’s not going to terrorize the school again not that she’ll have any say in that though. But also this whole thing could just be in of itself another way to foreshadow just that. Either way, she’s venturing through Hades to save her friends, but is willing to stay there if it means making things right.
Y’know it also kinda feels like Solstice is gonna pull out the ol’ Rorschach tests.
“Tell me what you see?”
Sunset proceeds to see either her kissing Twi, her strangling Timber, or Celestia disappointed in her.
Arms crossed. Sunset took in air just to sigh it back out like sand dragged back into the sea.
AND IT STILL MAKES YOUR FEET GRAINY. THERE’S ALWAYS A LIL BIT LEFT BEHIND IN YOUR SANDAL.
And a stop to say it’s lovely seeing this second picture right after. Solstice just across from the ‘imprisoned’ Sunset, showing the source of the cell-door imagery. Again, I’m no artist, but I feel like there’s a number of contrasts and comparisons to be seen here.
First, I’ll admit I don’t know what that thing is in the right side of the first pic and left side of the second pic. BUT It does connect the two – the way its coloured and the angle it’s on.
Second, the difference in line styling with each picture – the one feat. Sunset is softer, more rounded, wavy, especially when the shadow-prison-bars hit Sunset herself. Notably, the only parts of Solstice that are rounded are the two that are most influenced by Sombra.
Third, the way these two come together. It’s literally shadow prison bars. AND that’s what curves around Sunset. Her tea’s steam curves and is reminiscent of her hair, but curves towards Solstice. The parts of Solstice influenced by Sombra are his hair and his breath. They’re mimicking her – again a sort of foreshadowing, and also almost soul-like (yes I'm thinking Danny Phantom). Oh yeah also it’s like, half his face literally covered in shadow too. But not just any shadow, a shadow that reflects the Yin-Yang symbol – the darkness in the light, and the light in the darkness.
“Yes, precisely!” He leaned forward to the edge of his seat. “But the exact effect is dependent on you! Anyone can feel love for their friends, or joy, anger, fear—really, I believe you’re right, the intensity of your emotions correlates to the intensity of your magic. But if the power comes from you directly, it’s also my belief that exactly how it manifests is related to your individual psychology. Who you are, what those emotions mean to you personally.”
Okay, don’t like how he ended on fear there. Can’t take this fore-shadow-ing.
If Solstice’s individual personality affects how his magic manifests, does that mean his initial fear, perhaps fear of his father, helped make it what it is now? Would his guilt manifest differently, since that seems to be strong with him? Or maybe guilt is simply the aftermath of fear having been realized.
A stupid giggle bubbled to the surface. “I’ve had theories for years,” Solstice near-squealed, his eyes flickering back to their regular green, if only momentarily, and back again. “It wasn’t until I came here to help you students that I had any way of observing other samples besides myself! And the most marvelous part is I may have guided the students towards the answers, but they’re the ones to figure it out! And now they can learn to harness those powers for good! Emotional therapy meets magical theory!”
And here we see an example of it all playing out. Sunset mentioned acting as your true self as a form of creating strong emotions – and Solstice is no longer acting. He’s never had the chance to actually be his true self until an opportunity like this presented itself. He’s always had to act on stage, act a certain way in front of his dad, find this niche interest and be unable to share it, and he’s had to act like everything’s okay in order to not induce anxiety in anyone else, which would make him feel worse. He’s had to filter and mute himself. And thus, him acting as his true self allows him to regain control of his whole, true self back from Sombra. Allows him to be powered by magic through something stronger than fear. For now.
And that's the end of Part 1 of this chapter's commentary!

I haven't even watched the new MLP movie, I don't even think I can, it makes me so depressed. All my favorite ponies are dead. I didn't even finish the last season of G4 because the show kind of turned to garbage. But I saw how it ended, and I hated seeing them all old. It's sad, I just wanted it to be open ended with it implied they continue to go on lots of adventures. But it ended with them old, Rarity was already greying, Pinkie had a canon kid, Spike turned into a hideous abomination, and Twilight was gonna outlive all her friends. I hate it. MLP was a comfy show and it made me happy, but it ended up just being depressing.
And it's not just the Mane 6 that are long dead, it's all the hundreds of background ponies that are dead!
Derpy Hooves my beloved, she means so much to me, I love her so much. But she's dead and gone. All the background six, everyone!!! THEY'RE ALL DEAD!! So many ponies DEAD!!
And they're replaced with this.

They are not aesthetic.
I just, really don't care for these designs. They all have the same eyes, and almost human looking faces. It's kind of uncanny valley. I don't like the hair either, it's so uninspired. There are so many unique hair designs on the g4 ponies. I mean besides color, cutie mark and slight eye variations that was the main way to show characterization. You could show what kind of personality they had with the design of the hair.
With Twilight, you got a very clean straight cut, orderly, it gives you the impression she a nerdy bookish type just by looking at her.
Pinky Pie, curly, bubbly bouncy curls, shows she's a very fun and exciting pony.
Rarity, elegant, styled and fabulous. You can tell she cares about her looks and is the stylish one.
Fluttershy, long and flowing, covering her face a bit. Gives her a delicate appearance and makes her seem shy.
Rainbow Dash, messy unstyled rainbow hair, makes her seem wild and adventurous.
Applejack, it's tied back and she's wearing a hat, obviously she works a lot, and spends a lot of time outside.
The color of them also relates to their personality, purple is mysterious, elegant and magical, blue and rainbow is cool and exciting, pink is fun and bubbly, orange is warm and strong, yellow and pink is soft and comforting. The colors and hair give off strong characters tells just by looking at them.
I could go on, about so many other ponies too.
But with these new ponies, I really can't infer much about them.
The unicorn has long, wavy, princess like hair, her color scheme also gives me princess vibes, she just looks like a bit of a quirky princess.
The orange one, has her hair tied back and braided, she looks kind of adventurous I guess, sort of nerdy, idk, I'm just not getting much from her.
The purple pegasus kind of gives me Rarity vibes. Sort of. I don't know. She looks very rich, she's got the gold hair piece and gold hooves going on
The other pegasus just looks like toothpaste, she just looks like someone took a tube a toothpaste and squeezed a dab of it out on her head, I hate it. That color pink with that color streak?? What were they thinking, it does not clash well together. But she just looks like the Rainbow Dash type one, or just a butch lesbian pegasus, idk, I just really don't like her design.
The you have the male earth pony. He just looks like, the dude, the guy, the bro, I really can't tell much of his personality just by looking at him, there's not much to go on.
I don't like them, I really don't. In g4 there are so many well designed ponies. Most of the background ponies have great designs. But for this, all of the main characters look so generic. I wish it was better, I really do. Maybe it's because of the 3d, I really don't care for it, they look like weird pony human hybrids, it makes me uncomfortable. The eyebrows kind of help make them look a little too human like in the face. They're just one smaller nose away from looking like Elsa.
I just miss the mane 6 so much, I wish the show hadn't ended the way it did and I wish this new generation took place in a different dimension or something. Everything the mane 6 did was all for nothing, Twilight's legacy completely gone. All my favorite ponies: dead.
My heart is broken. I know it's all fictional but still, those ponies meant a lot to me.

Tronos Madu Design Path
A design thread within days of posting it on twitter? It’s a miracle the account holder has been replaced with someone actually organised.
Anyway joking aside this time we’re looking at Tronos Madu! As usual some images are in guessed timeline order and it is possible there’s other concept art of him out there that have not been found at the time of posting.
On Francisco Ruiz Velasco’s Artstation account one of his uploads contains the bulk of artwork for this design post which has been put into order here for easier viewing. One of these is a glimpse at an earlier Tronos design which is somewhat different from the final version yet has his general vibes plus his head/arms seems to have carried onto his later.
There’s even the unpainted head on this version and a little tail nub!
This image is marked as final character design bar a few tweaks here and there that will happen on a later pass this is very much the Tronos we know and love!
There is even bonus character movement/body expression studies to really get a feel of how this boy might move about the world which is not something I’ve seen all that often so it’s fascinating to see them. The letters seem to imply it was either a full range of movements so who knows what else he might have been up to in these.
Stop drop and roll lightning lizard boy.
In addition to all the shiny stuff above there is also detailed reference of his face with and without the helmet from this stage of his design.
Plus an expression sheet! Non-humans are a rarity on this front so these are fabulous to see.
[Source for all the above artwork]
We're also incredibly lucky in that Fury Galluzzi has the orthographic art of Tronos on her website which is both fantastic reference and shows just how detailed these things can be!
This image has become somewhat infamous for an incident where I nearly crashed my entire computer because the original size is huge. This is a screenshot of that which tumblr being tumblr has resized to be smaller because of page width. As such I highly recommend clicking the source below or popping out the image here for a proper look at everything.
[Source]
Finally Isaac Orloff has the texture mark up complete with callouts for your reference/generally appreciating shiny needs on his website!
[Source]
As a bonus his instagram also has zoom ins for his face as seen above for that extra crunchy detail. All in all that’s how you make a Tronos!
[Source]
And in the end we got this guy!

this is just a little thought i'm dumping into your asks lol but as a trans person (or more specifically someone on the multi-gendered non-binary spectrum), the entire concept of the body swap in EFTD is so interesting to me??
especially after that moment of sunset's discomfort with being referred to as he/him or being seen as a guy just because she was in timber's body – do any of the other characters feel anything similar or opposite?
i realise this may not have anything to do with the plot/subplots of EFTD but it's nice to theorise! clearly, rarity was having the time of her life in timber's body, it could just be a simple realisation of "hey i like masculine clothing more than i thought i did," or a "yeah i'm definitely staying away from skirts, not my thing" you know?
also don't worry if you can't answer this properly, i'm just curious!!
This makes me INCREDIBLY happy, I just want you to know 💖
I wanted to make EFTD feel okay for trans readers as much as possible. There's that small part in chapter 5:
Rarity laid her hand back on the topmost knee of her crossed legs. “Thank you, dear. Should we still refer to you as she and Timber, he/him, or would you say it’s the other way around?”
Sunset stared. “Oh. Uh, same as usual, I guess. I’m still me.” It made her swelteringly uncomfortable to have someone think she might be a gender she didn’t identify as just based on her body alone, but Sunset pushed that aside since it was considerate for Rarity to ask. Twilight seemed to cross one off her list. “Next question.”
Sunset feels uncomfortable with the idea that someone would see her as a different gender than who she identifies as, because ultimately, it's still her. Gender isn't based on anatomy and she doesn't want to be misgendered
Which, like, I always thought would come up with some characters in a body swap story! It's like a kind of dysphoria, I think! Why wouldn't it?
I will say, though, at the same time, that Sunset does seem to like some things that are considered masculine for her gender expression. She's clearly jealous of Timber’s muscles and would like to be more buff herself. And you won't see this for a while, but Sunset wears boxers sometimes.
And I love the fact that Rarity asks, it tells you a fair bit about her that she wouldn't just force what she thinks onto someone. She would ask and want to know what's most accurate and supportive, because of course she would!
I also agree, she's having a great time. I do love the idea of her exploring her gender more! So many fabulous ways to be!!!
As for other characters, I don't think this gets talked about, but Bevin and I joked/headcanoned that when Rarity is all fashionable at the soccer game as Timber and Flash and Twilight are gawking at her, Twilight, currently in Flash’s body, has a boner and doesn't know what to do about it. 😂 Like, if you don't know that she has that in that scene (like Sunset and we the readers) it still makes perfect sense why Twilight's freaked out, but it's a headcanon I like because it definitely adds to that scene.
I think some characters totally are finding things that they like about being another gender or in another body! I think Flash adores being anybody else but himself in general, with respect to his body image issues. Like even though he's hyper anxious about what the person in his body will notice, Flash is also very happy that he's someone slimmer at the moment. And I would say in general it makes sense to me that both Flash and Timber like to explore things outside of masculinity. I love what I've seen from your headcanons of them, even if I haven't explored that directly! Timber does wear makeup when he's back in his own body at one point, that's another tiny little spoiler for you :D
In the current cast, not everyone's been put into a body with a different gender presentation than their own, but still, realizing that there are different ways to present must be odd and cool to them. As well as totally disorienting. 😂
Full-disclosure: I think this body swap concept could be used to go even further into trans feelings and experiences than I have here. Long before Empathy, I had a story concept in mind to do a body swap story with MtF and FtM characters (and a nonbinary support), original characters and universe.
As a cis person, I don't know if it's entirely my place to tell a story like that. Would certainly be handled best by trans writer(s), if nothing else. But that's not to say I can't still write trans characters or a story that's respectful/inviting to trans readers, you know?
And I'm still deciding things for later in this universe, so I'd like to include at least one explicitly trans character in the main cast, but I'm still figuring out details like that, so I won't promise anything. Don't want to lead anyone on until I'm sure what I'm going with!!
So yeah, definitely means a lot that you've had that experience with the story, among other things!!
Honestly, I'd love to hear your headcanons about what you think the characters are thinking and feeling!!! Please share, anytime! 💖

Moneybags Musa’s Wild and Crazy Pilgrimage!!!
Between the 13th and 16th centuries one of the wealthiest and most powerful empires in the world was the Mali Empire, located in what is now west Africa. It’s mighty army numbers over 100,000 at a time when France and England could barely muster an army over ten thousand. It ruled over millions of people. It’s capital, Timbuktu, served as a center of culture, wealth, and learning in Africa. Most importantly, because of it’s geographical location, the Mali Empire controlled an important network of trade routes between Europe, the Middle East, and sub-Saharan Africa, making the empire fabulously wealthy.

At it’s height, Mali was ruled by the powerful king Mansa Musa, who reigned from 1312 to 1337. Being the sovereign of a fabulously wealth empire meant of course that Musa himself was fabulously wealthy. In fact, he was so wealthy that he is often credited as the wealthiest man in history. It is extremely difficult to estimate how wealthy he was by modern standards, however most estimates claim around $400 billion US. By contrast Jeff Bezos’ net worth is around $118 billion. Whether this number is accurate or not, it is undeniable that Mansa Musa was seriously loaded.
Musa was a devout Muslim, and as such conducted a pilgrimage to Mecca in the years 1324-1325. When one usually thinks of a religious pilgrimage, especially in the Middle Ages, typically extreme hardship and sacrifice comes to mind. NOT FOR MONEYBAGS MUSA!. Musa made sure that on his pilgrimage to Mecca he would be traveling in style and luxury the likes of which the world had never seen. Making up his procession were 60,000 servants and slaves as well as hundreds of draft animals that carried all his “necessities”. Among his possessions was a large amount of gold. Each servant and slave carried around 1.8kg (4 lbs) of gold, while 80 camels carried around 23–136 kg (50–300 lb) of gold. Altogether he carried around 116,119 kg (256,000 lbs) of gold, worth around $5 billion US today.

Mansa Musa was very generous with his gold when his procession traveled across North Africa and the Middle East. Throughout every city, village, and town he would spend money like a drunken sailor, blowing money so fast that he would make the average US Congressman blush. He bought fine clothes, antiquities, fine foods, and other valuable collectibles. He would also donate large sums of money to local mosques, or commission the building of new mosques. He was extremely generous to the poor, donating to charitable organizations and surprising beggers and panhandlers with bags full of gold. Often, when parading through a city, he would have his servants toss gold coins to spectators. Mansa Musa’s wild pilgrimage would cement his legacy of wealth for centuries to come.
And he would completely devastate the economy of the Arabia and North Africa for the next decade. What Mansa Musa didn’t understand, in fact what few people understood at the time was the concept of inflation. The value of money is based upon it’s rarity. When more money is added to the money supply without an equal rise in the amount of goods and services, money losses value. If an extremely large amount of money enters the money supply very quickly a situation can occur called “hyperinflation”, where the economy is overwhelmed with too much money, making money itself almost worthless.
When Mansa Musa made his return trip to his empire he noticed that cities which were once thriving economies had been devastated by severe economic depression and had become bastions of poverty. What had happened? As it turns out due to Mansa Musa’s extreme generosity with his gold, he had flooded the local economy with so much gold that gold itself had become worthless. The consequences were dire. People saw their life savings made worthless overnight. Businesses and trade collapsed. The local populace had regressed from societies of complex trade to primitive barter. Unemployment, poverty, and homelessness reached epic levels while crime skyrocketed. Mansa Musa had made a big mistake.
Musa tried to fix the situation by selling back the items that he had purchased and taking large, high interest loans from moneylenders in order to contract the money supply. However the damage had been done, and many of the lands he visited would be gripped by economic depression for the next decade.

Sigh... The worst of the Friends Forever comics...
I’ve reviewed this already for Trixuary and it is even in my modern style of review. But time didn’t help and to sum it up, as someone who dislikes the IDW Comics for their lack of strong continuity this one is the worst offender of them all because it ignores its own continuity. They have Rarity being angry about Trixie enslaving Ponyville in her second meeting, despite this being their fourth. Their third meeting was Rarity and others helping Trixie prove her innocence. And if this comic was the true third interaction it would be fine but they made reference to the Rarity/Babs Seed Friends Forever comic that mentions the whole Trixie A-Team story. So there should be no reason for Rarity to be angry at Trixie. She knows Trixie changed. There should be no reason for this hostility. So let’s rewrite it.
The opening will be the same. Rarity is going to Manehatten with Sweetie Belle. While Sweetie Belle will be staying with Babs Seed and her family, Rarity will be at a hotel to help with the fitting for Sapphire Shores. But instead of a fitting Rarity will be needing to create new costumes because the venue just got bigger. And Sapphire wants Rarity to collab with the Special Effects Pony...
Like if you want something to perfectly summarize Trixie, this is it. Now here is where we get to rewriting. Unlike the original, Rarity remembers Trixie after the Jewel Heist Situation and seeing Trixie being friends with Starlight, so Rarity makes no mind about it. But it is the other ponies backstage that don’t trust Trixie. If they haven’t heard about the enslavement of Ponyville, they’re thinking Trixie was the true guilty party of that Jewel heist despite evidence to the prior.
So the conflict is not Rarity sudden dislike for Trixie but more Trixie trying to prove herself. She’s giving off ideas left and right to the point Rarity can’t really think of anything on her own. So to get some breathing room, Rarity suggests that they work apart for a bit. Sapphire wants the effects and costumes to be big and loud and they work on making it so.
Since they were supposed to work together, they get back together an hour before the dress rehearsal to compare notes. Rarity, of course, being fabulous. And Trixie wanting to impress by having a big fireworks show. But since Rarity didn’t make the dress with that in mind they get set ablaze. Rarity always make doubles for Sapphire Shores just in case of a wardrobe malfunction but Trixie takes it hard, thinking that she’s nothing but a screw up.
Rarity, being the generous soul she is, goes to Trixie and not only confirms Trixie is indeed a different pony but also that she’s sorry for not really taking Trixie’s comments into consideration. Now with that cleared up, the two make the necessary changes to make the proper Dress Rehearsal a hit and Trixie gaining the respect she deserved for her hard work.
Hopefully my version would be considered better than this. And this version will be the one to be canon with GLAB.

Empathy for the Devil Re-Read Chapter 5!
The plot thickens! A villain is introduced! And Sunset still won’t go to therapy!
Sunset Shimmer wondered if the universe enjoyed making things harder for her.
Maybe not the universe. Maybe one creator, fiendish in their methods but ultimately knowing it will produce what's needed for a better future, and a better life.
*cough cough I'm looking at you Marvel cough cough*
Insert Sunset jumping out out of the book to get into a fistfight with Marvel.
Applejack frowned, first to Rarity who thumbed the geode around her neck
RARIJACK ALERT
“Oh yes, I’m all for mental health advocacy,” Rarity began, her eyes flickering towards Twilight, if only briefly, “and I think it’s absolutely fabulous to have new supports in place, but isn’t it a tad gauche to introduce yourself to a magical high school by condemning all magic?”
Rarity as socially tactful as always
It WAS quite vague. But not necessarily in the vein of all magic bad per se. It fits with Sunny's view that magic isn't evil, even though its use can be.
But anti-magic is a lil’ fair? Since only about 7 students (okay now 9) can use it? Out of a school of what, 500? 2000? Is this an anime where a select few students control the whole school?
Ah some FS-FS (that’s Fluttershy Foreshadowing, yes I totally thought this through shuddup), she got the Advanced Bio. Gonna be a veterinarian. Also thick book I'm sure, v good for defense. Or offense.
Magic can cause some very, um, stressful situations.”
As soon as she said that, all their friends had to make various noises of agreement, now including Timber. The Great and Powerful Trixie breezed by muttering something along the lines of, ‘Oh, tell me about it…’
Excellent timing Trixie. Excellent addition, Marvel.
Fluttershy went on, “Besides, there’s no need to be defensive, girls. We shouldn’t assume everything is an attack on us.”
Dammit, Fluttershy. How are you so mature?
Fluttershy's mature from having to deal with Dash's immaturity. Also dealing with and learning from her own anxieties helps I’m sure.
Sunset put a pause on internally cursing the very universe itself. Mostly, it was to start cursing herself (not literally, although she knew some doozies from when Princess Celestia explicitly told her not to touch The Forbidden Tome of Nastiness and Untold Evils Vol. DCLXVI) for being self-centered.
Curses? Are you SURE you didn't accidentally curse yourself with how your life is going? Or maybe you'll use one later?
It helped chill her out a bit (even if Sunset’s preferred outlet for anger still involved her old sledgehammer and the trash bins in the alleyway behind her apartment)
Maybe you should just stay... "in your corner". Also, I never thought I’d see an explanation for Sunset having a sledgehammer, but damn, here we are.
she thought of earth pony farmers (which in hindsight: yikes)
Unicorn master racist
Really though, that’s very unbecoming of a future ruler of Equestria. What’s Celestia teaching you? Probably also reinforces the argument for sending Twilight to Ponyville to find friends.
Gotta add that the expressions and body language on this Bevin pic feat. Pinkie, Sunset, and Timber is great. I like to imagine that Timber isn’t really used to having small pockets.
Fluttershy hummed, smiling in on the joke. “Six or seven demons ago, I’d say.”
Yaaaaaas! Flutters bringing in the jokes too. I'm so proud.
...shutting his locker directly adjacent to the block of the girls’ lockers.
Now was That one of the favours pulled too? Making sure they were near Flash?
Timber attended Home Ec and Gym in her place (not a tragedy on the latter, she thought)
Gonna get your bod jacked af so you get muscles like that too Sun-Bun
Sunset tried not to lean on her old vices too much, generally; obviously, the last thing she ever wanted was to lay even a single tread down the same dark path that led her to the demonic transformation at the junior year Fall Formal. But this was to help her friends, so she thought she was at least a little justified in taking some pride in her natural-born aptitude for Equestrian magic.
Past skills coming in to play yet again
only breaking two pens in frustration along the way)—
Maybe anger management would've been a good idea. Or maybe one of those stress squeeze thingies.
It felt good to be such a natural.
Sweet Celestia, how many times could I have saved us trouble if it just worked the way I’m good at?
;;;;;;;;;;;;
Twilight and the girls seemed to think she could be. And after all she’d done to be their friend, Sunset wanted to agree, but she also didn’t feel quite so pure anymore. Friendship never came natural to her, but she thought she’d mastered it by now. She thought she was good at heart. So why did she still mess up like this? I’m not a bad friend. Maybe I’ve just been away from Equestria too long, she tried to reason, tapping the page with her ballpoint pen.
Sunset, you have NO IDEA.
Seriously, best idea would be go and talk to Princess Twi about it. About all her friendship failings even as the Princess of friendship. Also maybe joke about Celestia's acting skills. That'll bring the imperfection feels down.
Friendship never came natural, but magic did. But friendship IS magic
So what's the truth?
Magic isn’t necessarily friendship if its all based in emotion. Just because you’re good at magic doesn’t make you good at friendship, it’d be harder to translate magic to friendship than friendship to magic.
A smile rose. “Nice sunrise today, Princess. You’ve outdone yourself.”
The silhouette didn’t turn back toward her
GIVE. SUNSET. A MOM!
At this rate, with her luck, Pinkie would explode some of Rarity’s diamond-sharp shields in the middle of Princess Twilight’s coronation. Now that would be something to talk about in therapy.
Is that what it takes Sunny?
Sunset sighed. “Okay, yeah, that’s fair. Everybody gets one question right now, so you’re not in the dark, and we can talk all we want later after we fix things. Deal or no deal?”
NO DEAL, HOWIE!
Sunset’s turn to be teacher! :D
Applejack balked. “Wait, that wasn’t my question.” “One question,” Sunset told her. “We’ve only got an hour for lunch. Magic takes time. Go ahead, Pinkie.”
Wow, you're a terrible teacher, Sunny! D:
“Consarn it,” Applejack muttered along with a string of countrified curse words increasingly too quiet and slurred together in her accent to make out
Pfft
I love me some AJ-isms. Honestly though Sunset, Applejack gives good advice and points, if you DID let her ask, maybe she would've given some insight you hadn't thought of before.
But no one ever listens to AJ
Timber perked up. “Oh, well, it’s got a beautiful countryside, friendly people, and I tried something called kjøttboller: very delicious, I’d totally recommend. Also I was horrified that I might never see my sister again and something something existential dread—but the kjøttboller!” He planted his hands on the table to make his point, then looked over to Flash. “But, no gift. Sorry, hot stuff. Maybe next time?”
These powers are permanent though right? Timmy Tim can master that, grab a souvenir, and come right back. Probs gonna bring some kjøttboller on a regular basis.
Sunset was about to elaborate before Rainbow Dash grinned. “My turn! Does this hurt you or Timber?” She punched Timber in the shoulder like it was her job.
“Ow!” Timber said.
Rainbow folded her hands neatly on the table in front of her as Timber rubbed his shoulder. “No further questions.”
Okay but like, with the Whole In Your Corner thing too, is there some sort of headcanon going around that RD has a grudge against Sunset and wants to throw down?
Rarity laid her hand back on the topmost knee of her crossed legs. “Thank you, dear. Should we still refer to you as she and Timber, he/him, or would you say it’s the other way around?”
Good ol’ Rarity, so damn considerate. Love that.
I think SciTwi can be summed up as follows in this scene:
Sunset: Bamboo? I only use composite materials in my net handle. [SciTwi writes notes] SciTwi: [muttering as she writes] Composite materials? Sunset: Next question. [the crowd writes notes again] SciTwi: [muttering again] Next question?
Instead of skipping over Timber like she thought would be logical, Timber waved at her across the table. “Hi, Timber in Sunset here. Long time listener, first time asker. My question is, do you not even try in gym class? Because I ran a lap and everyone was shocked.”
Timber has such good dialogue
I’m strategic. I don’t run, I hit things.” That’s what she told them, at least. Sunset didn’t like to sweat in front of other people, plus there were usually ways to spend the whole class ‘helping’ Coach Spitfire get supplies for the other students that didn’t involve as much work.
Yes, it was very strategic of you to hit those garbage cans with the sledgehammer.
But dammit Sunny, cardio is super important. We all know you want muscles, but seriously. Good for your health, including mental health.
Also your gf might find it sexy to see you sweat
…There may have been a reason to start her punching bag-based workout regime up again when she got her body back, and that reason maybe was to picture the bag as Timber’s face. Or, at the moment, her own face.
Also, ya sure you just don't wanna punch yourself there Sunny? Like, not just in that moment. After all the self hate and self pity about being a bad friend and all, turning yourself into a verbal punching bag.
Flash shoved his free hand back into his pocket. A totally ordinary move coming from him, but she knew it meant he was at least a little uncomfortable. “Are you two going to be alright?”
Flash is such a sweetheart omg. The love this lad has could send an entire changeling hive into cardiac arrest.
He was too good at disguising his expression—in her body no less. “...I don’t think it matters what we were thinking,” Sunset lied, but she didn’t break eye contact with Timber, trying to read her own face. She dropped it along with her hands on the table. “It could be a paradox.”
THOU LIEST. TO THY GIRLFRIEND NO LESS.
Also quit deflecting!
“Like I keep saying, magic is usually based on emotion,” she said, parsing through the equations she’d written in her artbook, “but that’s how it works in Equestria. Over here, I don’t know, I’m just going to admit I wouldn’t call myself an expert—maybe it just doesn’t make sense. Timber and Flash shouldn’t have powers without geodes, but they do now.”
;w;
It’s okay. I’m used to being the weirdo that doesn’t make sense to other people.”
...b-baby...
“...creates paradoxes,” Flash finished quietly. To his credit, he managed a smile for the girls and didn’t let the mood drop down. “If Timber and I need to give up our powers because it’s causing too much trouble, it’s o—”
BABIES! MUST PROTECC!
Timber made eye contact with her, and for a moment she could’ve sworn she saw something recognizable—guilt—but she didn’t get a chance to confirm that she’d seen anything at all.
A magic glow formed around Timber, and it was only moments later when Sunset realized the same glow formed around her. She lit up. “Wait, everybody shut up! I think it’s working! I think—
Eye contact... the key.
Or maybe the sharing of feelings towards their exes/current SOs
Maybe that shared love. It's not like it would've gone away right away or anything, especially since the break ups haven't had clear reasons. Moving on is hard, especially when you know that there's still so much to love about a person. That and the fact you keep hanging out with them and watch them grow into better people.
The person in Sunset’s body held their hands over their mouth. “I didn’t mean to! Was that because of me? I’m sorry!”
*Gross sobbing* My boy...
We’re freaking them out, she realized. If the magic experts are scared about something, how’s the rest of the student body supposed to react?
They go to the new counselor. Hehehe. Absolutely fiendish.
Everybody calm down, easy! The first thing to do is figure out who’s who, okay? I’m Timber,” he said, making Rainbow Dash sound like a camp counselor speaking to junior campers on how to tie a proper knot.
Honestly? That says a lot about Timber. His personality makes total sense in the camp counselor thing, but damn that capacity to take charge of the sitch when trouble comes makes him that much better.
"Dude! You took my body?! Not cool!”
Wait a SECOND! Dash punched Timber in Sunny's body. So Timber now has Dash's body... is... is it negative emotions that cause the switch?
Anger, guilt, pain... hmmm... literally forcing the other party to walk a mile in their shoes so they understand what they're going through better?
Or maybe a sharing of negative emotions - the one feeling it and the one causing it. And then the switch back occurs when they reach an understanding like how Timber and Sunset almost had?
Like AJ would've been jealous of Pinkie getting a second question.
Sunset felt bad about lying to her gf?
Flash feels bad about everything tho, but it makes sense for Sunny. But then again Flash feeling bad about everything is kind of like how Sunset is too?
A few I kinda don't get yet but... there might be something here
Could be that Dash is ‘Shy to learn to be softer?
SciTwi has some feelings about Flash I'm sure, especially since the awkwardness of her not being TwiTwi. Also being Sunset's ex probably doesn't help those feelings of jealously. Like, the wingman bro-ness Sunny and Flash seem to have still. Maybe she’s also jealous of the fact that Sunset and Flash get along so well despite being exes, but Timber and Twi have it awkward.
Sunset grunted, rubbing the space between her eyes under the glasses she now needed. “Okay, this has officially gotten old. Rainbooms? Time to Pony up.”
Yes. Pony up the feelings you all share. And pony up the dough. Pinkie needs to make cookies to bring everyone together.
...she knew, obviously; he’d taught her how to play in the first place.
Sunset, still bad at the time: I will conquer Equestria with MUSIC!
The Dazzlings: Hey hey what the fuck
But she realized Flash usually asked how everyone else was doing first before talking about the stuff he loved, so it was easy to forget he and his band Flash Drive were just as, if not more, popular than the Rainbooms.
Wow. Just... such a good boy. He gives dogs a run for their money.
“Wait, yeah, doesn’t our magic come from the heart? ‘Cause my heart’s over there right now.”
Timber waved, sitting on an amp on the side of the room.
Nah Rainbow, it comes from the soul. You need soul music
*smooth jazz intensifies*
...having everyone wear the correct coloured geode was the first time she could keep them all straight.
No one can keep these gays straight
...picking on nerds...
Sunset were you always so cruel? What would your favourite nerd have to say about that hmmmm?
Jokes on you, now you're in love with one HAH.
NERDS RULE
...eyes she recognized as her girlfriend.
SOUL. EYES ARE A WINDOW TO THE SOUL.
Kinda funny that of all the perceptions of what they are switching, that one wasn't mentioned
Hey. I promise, we can debate the existence of a soul and what this all means later, okay?
Oh goddammit
Her eyes reached for Sunset’s, and Sunset knew exactly why. That was their song. Both quite literally, in that they sung the vocal leads in duet, and because when they’d started dating, it became their song.
D’aww
So Sunset told her not to worry about the music in the gym, as nice as Flash’s acoustic guitar was. She started to sing the lyrics to Right There in Front of Me below her breath.
D’AWWW
And after a verse, Twilight joined in. Their first kiss cut the second chorus short.
D’AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW
By the time they got to the chorus, it was impossible to ignore the fact that Twilight and Flash’s voices were singing what the Rainbooms now considered their only real love song.
Sunset spared a look towards Flash. He looked like he’d seen the spirits Twilight was so interested in talking about, and he held his arms in such a way that he covered up his stomach. Sunset felt an intense pang of worry that he’d throw up.
Wow
Flash screws everything up again (even though it's just his body)
A warm, satisfying magic shimmered around them, like the steam from a hot tub. Before she knew it, all of her friends had adorable pony ears and tails again, prompting their two-man audience to cheer them on
OR NOT
Still cheering you on
And Rainboom! Another Chapter, gone in a Flash! Hope you enjoyed!
