It was that time of the year again when the lives lost on that fateful day were honored. Three years ago, many had lost their lives and yet, nobody seemed to honor the one who led the battle. While the circumstances surrounding the incident were still unclear, Jiyan knew that the former general did not deserve to be vilified. As he walked alone to the Crescent, he looked up at the overcast sky which seemed to mirror his melancholic mood.
Entering the statue of the Threnodian was out of the question but Jiyan layed a few Emortia flowers on the ground that overlooked the statue, as if to commemorate Geshu Lin's sacrifice. "We may have disagreed on a lot, but standing where you once stood with the position you once held, I know why you made the decision you took even though I still do not agree with it."
He didn't know why he was speaking to himself and why he was here. Perhaps the phantom he saw during the awakening of the Threnodian shook him much more than he'd like to admit. - @midnight-ranger-general-jiyan
The clouds above the barren landscape shifted with unshed rain, seeming to darken the further any willing soul dared to traverse further into the battlefield that was, for once in its history, devoid of combat.
On the outskirts, it seemed one such soul was willing to venture close. A light rain was beginning to fall, drizzling over the cracked earth. Yet the rain that fell here never seemed to have an effect on the vegetation— or the lack thereof.
The rain landed on the offering of flowers, pattering against the small petals of the Emortia before seeming to retract. The rain was weak, but that was still enough.
Geshu Lin faintly phased in and out of visibility, his conscience struggling against the phantom’s desire to simply reenact the same experiences and memories that kept him tied to this land. His presence was faint, but still there nonetheless.
He glanced to the flowers that Jiyan had brought, unsure of how to feel about the offering. It was the first anyone had brought in his name, and he narrowed his eyes as the rain picked up, granting him a little more control over his phantom form, though still restraining himself from speaking.
Instead, he listened, feeling a wry, crooked smile form on his scarred lips as he stood behind Jiyan, who looked as composed as ever despite Geshu knowing he was likely distraught on the inside.
He stayed silent for a moment more, the sound of rain around them. “…well. What do we have here? I suppose since you’ve proven yourself, I should be addressing you as General, Jiyan.” He murmured, his voice slightly distorted, sounding like an echo that had traveled through many chambers before being audible to human ears.

Geshu Lin watched as Jiyan stiffened and turned to face him like a cornered cat, poised and ready for battle should that be what he desired.
But he simply cocked his head and loosely crossed his arms over his chest, leveling Jiyan with an evaluating stare.
In Geshu Lin’s eyes, they were very similar people, only they had vastly different ways of expression, and perhaps their core beliefs and motives differed slightly from one another. But that didn’t take away from the similarities, and if someone asked him… well he didn’t regret how things turned out at all. Even with the sacrifices that were made.
“Do I need to make you face another test? From the way I see it, you ultimately made the same decision I did… just with a different outcome.” He replied, his sharp gaze leaving Jiyan in favor of gazing out at the battlefield before looking back to the former medic, as if daring him to refute the statement.
It was that time of the year again when the lives lost on that fateful day were honored. Three years ago, many had lost their lives and yet, nobody seemed to honor the one who led the battle. Geshu Lin’s momentary amusement was gone as quickly as it had come, replaced by a rough frown on his lips, the scar in the corner pulled down with them. Jiyan was defiant, perhaps it was denial, or naivety, he was young, that much remained true, the wariness that had settled in his bones did not yet show on the youth of his face. Geshu Lin couldn’t decide if he liked it that way or not.
“Written data is not perspective, physical graves are not perspective, each and every flower you bring for a fallen man is not perspective, Jiyan. Surely you don’t mean to say that we are all looking through a skewed lens?” He prompted, cocking his head with silent intrigue while his hand gestured to the Emortia flower behind Jiyan.
“Prices that nobody can afford must be paid, debts can be carried. What we cannot afford— is to lose.” The reminder was blunt, a hint of Geshu Lin’s personal manic obsession with winning showing in the flicker of his golden eyes before it melted back to a cold focus.
Though if they were speaking purely on how choices define a person, Geshu knew better than anyone. He existed as a concept— not a person, all that remained of him were fragments. His choices when alive shaped how he ‘lived’ in death, the way he was seen for how he acted as general were all results of his choices. He was well aware of his reputation. “There is plenty of thought in sacrifice. Sometimes, it is the only option.” He didn’t feel the need to elaborate, they were both aware of how he vanished.
Geshu Lin stared back as Jiyan took a step closer, silence enveloping them for a moment, the breeze ruffling Jiyan’s hair while it went right through Geshu— one of them still breathing, a future to be had. “Perhaps then, when you do fall, there will be more left of you than there was of me.” He paused, a small grin on his lips. “I look forward to it.”

When Geshu Lin even so much as stepped closer, Jiyan reacted with tension and distrust. Which was not something the former general could hold against him, given the history of phantoms from the retroact rain… and yet it was almost mildly amusing to see him so wary. “Generalizations are based on evidence, you know this just as well as I do.” He refuted with a sharp look. Even if his viewpoints were negative, there was little room in war for sugarcoating.
At the quip about sacrificing soldiers unnecessarily, Geshu Lin gave a quiet scoff of laughter, it seemed Jiyan did indeed have plenty of spirit left in him. “Is that so? Ha, always the diligent hero.” It was admirable, truly. In some aspects, Geshu Lin saw himself in the young general, in other aspects, not so much. “Very well, we’ll see what becomes of you as this war goes on.”
There would be countless casualties without a doubt, there had been many changes since Geshu Lin’s time as general, but no matter who assumed the role— the nature of war would not change. Excluding non-resonators from the force lessened the risk, but it did not eliminate death tolls. More people would fall, and it would eventually wear on Jiyan, perhaps more than it already does. But Geshu would let him go on regardless. Ultimately Jiyan, too, would fall one day— it didn’t have to be now.
It was that time of the year again when the lives lost on that fateful day were honored. Three years ago, many had lost their lives and yet, nobody seemed to honor the one who led the battle. Seeing as Jiyan had developed quite a bit of trust for Rover, Geshu Lin didn’t question his statement that his intuition told him that Rover wouldn’t easily be pulled to the other side. He couldn’t speak for either of them, he had never met Rover, but he knew well enough to have faith in Jiyan’s judgement of someone else’s character. As the conversation went on, he found himself growing more curious about this outlander. Were they truly as powerful as they seemed? Had Jué really foreseen them in the future of Jinzhou?
He pushed the questions out of his mind and his gaze flickered back to meet Jiyan’s, observing as the general closed his eyes in thought. Geshu Lin refrained from making a comment on their sentinel, feeling as though some things were going unsaid. Ultimately, it was all out of his hands now. He hated to admit it, but the lack of control irked him, there was absolutely nothing he could do in this state and that fact got under his skin.
Regardless, a brief moment of reprieve was worth its weight in gold, even if the gold in question was the gold of Jiyan’s eyes being once more leveled on him. Geshu Lin gave a quiet scoff at the question, finding it incessantly redundant. “In the time it takes to preserve one life, you lose three more.” He answered with narrowed eyes. Taking out the root of the problem would save more lives in the long term, and it always requires sacrifice.
“You can’t save everyone, Jiyan… there’s no use in trying. You’ll only tear yourself apart.” Geshu Lin spoke with his brows furrowed and a wry smile on his scarred lips, taking a step closer to Jiyan who had been looking at the Emortia flowers, such a beautiful sentiment in the midst of such infernal carnage.

Geshu Lin observed as Jiyan stepped towards him, seemingly not afraid at all, not even hesitant to face the form of his general with as much determination as he had always done, even in the past. Geshu Lin would be lying if he said he didn’t hold a small amount of pride for the general that Jiyan had become, despite their differences.
“Tell me then, Jiyan, if you are so sure…” His expression was stern, and his voice was low, almost taunting but not without faint amusement threaded in each word, almost imperceptible in the night breeze. “The facts are right in front of you. You live, and Ovathrax has fled with its tail between its legs.” He replied with a grin, his golden eyes bright with victory — though it was not his own. The difference was clear, at least to the former general it was.
But… The decision was the same, intrinsically at least, at its core. “And yet…” Geshu Lin paused, his grin vanishing. “…were you not completely ready to sacrifice yourself if the need arose?” He asked with an intense gaze, watching Jiyan’s hand fall from his sword and come to rest at his sides.

Geshu Lin looked thoughtful for a moment, glancing to the ground with furrowed brows, his lips drawn in a taut line as he considered the information presented to him. The existence of this Rover was too valuable to ignore, they very well could be the most significant asset to finally winning the war that had plagued their planet. And if that was the case… then it wasn’t even a question of whether or not they would lose them. It couldn’t be allowed.
“Then make it so they don’t even have the chance to consider a different path.” Geshu Lin wasn’t going to entertain the slim chance that Rover would side with an organization like the Fractsidus, especially if Jiyan had already established something of a friendship with them, he could use that to keep Rover aware of the catastrophic consequences that the Lament would have… and if Rover was as good of a person as Jiyan seemed to think they were, there wouldn’t be any problems.
“I am sure that if you speak so highly of them… then they must be a smart individual, and surely they value human life, just like you.” He added with a faint taunting undertone to his voice, unable to resist poking at Jiyan’s overly caring attitude. Geshu Lin considered it a hindrance and a point of weakness, if one was too preoccupied with saving one life, they would eventually lose sight of the bigger picture… Jiyan had indeed proved himself worthy of the title of general, but it seemed he couldn’t quite shake his roots as a medic.

Geshu Lin exhaled a breath through his nose at Jiyan’s admittance that he felt as though a bigger battle was brewing in the background. He may be right, or it may be his paranoia spurred on by his worry about Jinzhou and all of the responsibility he feels for the people he cares about. Perhaps both
“There is always a bigger battle. The illusion of peace is simply the foreground for larger conflicts to arise. However, don’t let it hold you back from savoring this win.” He muttered with a sigh and a darkened expression, knowing that this wasn’t an end to the fighting, even if it was a victory, and he wouldn’t comfort Jiyan with empty assurance that everything would be fine. That wouldn’t do anyone any good.
When Geshu Lin was alive, he had a balance between the two, but he took them to extremes. He was battle hungry, and driven by the desire to win, but he was also critically negative and consumed by the bleak reality of war. And he was content with that, likely the reason for his downfall. But now knowing of this outlander, there might be hope after all.
“So Rover is their name?” Geshu Lin replied bluntly, crossing his arms over his chest and watching Jiyan’s expressions as he spoke about Rover. Truthfully, he didn’t particularly care how this outlander was capable of turning the tides, only that they managed to do so… and also to save Jiyan’s life. “…very well. See to it that they utilize that power to its full potential.” He wasn’t going to encourage slacking, especially if Rover was able to harness that much energy, it could be the key to truly winning this war… He also debated if he should ask Jiyan to extend his thanks, but decided against it as it would serve little purpose. He hated to see wasted potential as well, and Jiyan had plenty of potential— so maybe, just maybe, he was glad that Rover had ensured the young general did not succumb to the same fate that Geshu Lin had.

Geshu Lin narrowed his eyes, peering down at Jiyan silently while tilting his head, picking the general apart with his gaze as if attempting to unravel the chords of his being. …He was sure it would be a fascinating pattern, given the vibrant care that seemed to make up so much of Jiyan’s personality.
“Is everyday that Jinzhou is free not counted as a small victory? War is made of battles, think of this as winning one and don’t demean this victory, even if the future appears daunting.” Geshu reminded with a frown. He had plenty of time to reflect on his own time as general, he knew he had always been hyper focused on the big picture— never caring for what it took to get there, even now, he was the same way, but he also acknowledged that sacrifices needed to be made equal to the outcome. In sacrificing himself, he knew it would only have been worth it if he successfully sealed the Threnodian, he wouldn’t have done so if it would be in vain. Jiyan understood this as well, he was wise for such a young general.
At the mention of an outlander, Geshu Lin only quirked a brow in silent curiosity. If it was foretold, then so be it… a victory is a victory no matter how it was won. “I see. Is this… outlander also the reason you are alive before me?” He prompted with an almost bitter laugh, his golden irises trained expectantly on Jiyan, pressing for an answer and deriving some sort of amusement from prodding at Jiyan’s composed and sincere demeanor.
