so the party manifestos won’t be published for a few weeks prolly, but the Labour Party policymaking system means they have an internal “policy platform” agreed by the partisan structure that kinda dictates what goes in the manifesto, and a similar partisan structure has the final say on the manifesto itself. the platform is private and internal, but it’s been “seen and summarised”. so heres a couple of interesting bits:
nationalise the rail; allow greater municipal ownership of bus networks; more ev charging stations and increased ev subsidies
“fundamentally reform our system of energy supply, generation and transmission” via public ownership, but without stating whether or not this includes consumer services or if the private wholesale system will continue
abolish the Lords; votes at 16; NO commitment to abolishing FPTP
“support the recognition of” palestine (note wording, and note the fact this was written before 7 october)
ban conversion therapy including for trans people; “modernise the process of gender recognition to remove indignities for trans people, while upholding the Equality Act, its protected characteristics and its provision for single-sex exemptions” (obviously using terf dogwhistles to get out of meaningfully reforming the law, without clarifying their plans)
sewage monitoring and fines for sewage leaks by water companies – water remains private
“land-use framework” to organise farmland with the goal of biodiversity, close hunting loopholes
intellectual property reform, maybe? they’re very vague about that one
one-month waiting time for mental health services
“reform broken tuition fees system” – NO commitment to abolition and debt forgiveness, only this squirmy line
“robust regulation to protect people from online harms” – basically equivocating to allow any possible passage of a bad internet bill :/
£28B green energy investment; double onshore wind, quadruple offshore wind; reinstate fracking ban and stop new oil/gas; “green energy by 2030”, whatever that means. weirdly fetishistic about hydrogen power
VERY, VERY little mention of City oversight and reform. City to remain extremely independent, capital to continue flowing
abolish leaseholds; end ‘arcane’ land laws; end no-fault evictions
football regulator; reform gambling laws
end fire-rehire; more regulation for two-tier employee/contractor workplace inequalities; more statutory workers’ rights; ban zerohours with more than 12h/week, “right to a contract”; change the minimum wage quango to account for cost of living, potentially hiking the minimum wage by several pounds
repeal a number of union-busting acts; regulate gig economies to statutorily allow the right to unionise; increase rights for unions to organise and manage themselves
ethics quango to enforce the ministerial code for the first time in its history; ban second jobs for MPs with very limited exceptions for professionals; ban former ministers from lobbying for five years; political finance reforms to restrict financing by shell companies
certain devolutionary powers for english local authorities on request; shrink whitehall, let the civil service go elsewhere
“respect orders”, ASBOs 2; domestic abuse register; misogyny as a hatecrime; ‘protect the right to protest’, explicitly opposing the public order bill without committing to overturn it
but yeah, the starmer leadership may leave some things on the cutting room floor, and the starmer government may act totally different when it doesn’t have the partisan oversight. in the end, we have to wait until the proper manifesto releases to make real judgements, but looking through this list can set the tone of our expectations: third-way, boring and pathetic

Memorandum relating to racialized violence at the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company in Mobile, AL, where some Black workers had recently been promoted to welders. May 25, 1943.

SUBJECT:  Racial Disturbance - ADDSCO [left side]
Attached are clippings from the afternoon "Mobile Press".
Today, I have had contacts with the following and have obtained what I believe to be reliable information from them.
Lt. Campbell, Naval Intelligence
Arthur Kearney, ADDSCO
Mr. Craven, " [ditto marks below ADDSCO above]
John Boucher, CIO - ADDSCO Union Rep'v.
J. C. Gates, Mgr., USES, Mobile.
Chas Baumhauer, Commissioner, City of Mobile.
Apparently the disturbance came off when the morning shift went on at 7 o'clock.  It is said that the first shift of negro welders went on about 11 o'clock last night and were finishing up their work at 7 this morning.  The whiteworkers [sic] began to collect in groups and it is said that they first threatened to strike.  Later, according to eye witnesses, they began to throw various pieces of steel, etc., at negroes near the work.  One white foreman is said to have been injured when he attempted to make the white men desist.  Mr. Craven said it was understood that one of the men hit him with a 2x4 rail and knocked him out, also a cut necessitated surgical treatment with a number of stitches for the wound.
One of the negroes who saw the trouble came up and [sic] here and said about five negroes were injured.  This seemed to be so, but I was told later that none of the injuries were very serious.  Large numbers of both white and negro workers left the yard and came back to the city.  A group of about 2 hundred negroes went first to the union headquarters and then were persuaded to go home until better order was secured.  The negro who came up to see me said his foreman urged his crew of laborers to leave the yard until order was restored and safety for them assured.
So far as can be ascertained this evening, no further trouble has developed at the yard.  However, instructions have been issued for women and children to remain off the streets and for citizens to be conservative in their talk, being careful not to stir up any further racial feeling.

SUBJECT:  [blank]
It seems that the better element at the yard took no part in the demonstration this morning, and I heard from Hugh Cornelius, General Superintendent for Doullut & Ewin, General Contractors, who have an office near where the trouble began, that he felt that the attack on the negroes was without any justification whatever and the action of a bunch of hoodlums.
It is hoped that the Management of ADDSCO will restore order and that the Yard will resume operations tomorrow morning.
The United States Employment Service has been cautioned to be particularly careful in handling releases during the next few days so that as little disruption of labor market conditions will result from this unfortunate incident as may be.
Dr. Morley will return to the office tomorrow morning and will, no doubt, keep you advised of any developments.

OMNIVISION NEWS! Coming to you from Ashing City! We go now to five time Eming Award winning actress, Zaq Pizazing, our anchor!
Tumblr media
Howdy y'all, some big news today. The largest merger in Zangren history, the fusion of the largest security companies in the Oligarchy was just completed this afternoon.
You may be wondering how. Well, it began with a huge sponsorship from the three families, given to a former tactical expert they trust. That expert is none other than Xen'reng, a controversial figure for their past in the the GZTC, using ironfisted methods to come down on union action.
But why, you ask? In addition to the escalations of our neighbours, this decision by the three families was primarily made because of the bombardment of Glengling Tower, where it was found that Bavian infiltrators had planned to destabalise our recovering economy by blowing up an integral structure of stock exchange. This forced the public to ask how this could've happened to begin with, and before those questions could lead to unrest, the three families stepped in.
So what is the Total Xen'reng Security Initiative? The parent company itself has absorbed industries that produce weapons, ships, vehicles, and so on. It will generally act as the largest industrial arm of the military, but it mainly operates with its subsidiaries.
The Stellar Naval Contractors is fusion of all the largest naval companies, becoming the bulk of our navy.
The Interplanetary Protection Corps is a combination of all the largest ground forces, meaning it will compose most of our armed forces.
The Security Enforcement Services merged the majority of the private security companies, essentially monopolising law enforcement.
And the company Reform Correct Produce has taken over the disreputable New Foling Corrections and Security Essentials and its penal colony.
While this all has the backing of the three families, polls on SwampFinder reveal a majority of the population disapproves of this huge monopolosing merger. Companies such as Ascension Co and the Raxing Institute of Learning have spoken out against this action, with many other companies joining in and filing complaints.
Let us know your views.
How will this change effect the future of the Oligarchy? Why is there an increased demand for folks to leave the habitats and join the colonies? When will we hear from Xen'reng about the investigation of Glengling Tower? Find out all this and more after the ad break!

India’s Brew Boom: Unlocking Massive Profits with Microbreweries
India’s craft-beer scene is on fire, and starting a microbrewery is the most profitable business you can launch today. Backed by rising incomes, evolving tastes, and supportive policies in nearly every state, a well-run microbrewery delivers rapid payback and steady growth. Here’s how to seize the opportunity — especially by partnering with Prodeb Brewery’s turnkey solutions and advanced beer making machine.
1. Explosive Market Growth
As urban millennials and Gen Z flock to flavourful, locally made beers, craft-beer volumes are soaring. By offering unique brews — mango wheat ales, monsoon porters, or spiced stouts — you can command premium pricing (₹300–₹500 per pint) and achieve gross margins north of 60%.
2. Widespread Licensing Opportunities
Alcohol prohibition applies only in a handful of regions, so most states and union territories welcome microbrewery ventures. Top markets include:
Metro Hubs: Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Kolkata
Tourist Destinations: Goa, Manali, Udaipur
Emerging Tier-2 Cities: Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow
Prodeb Brewery guides you through market research, zoning laws, and local regulations to ensure your location maximizes footfall and minimizes hurdles.
3. Turnkey Expertise from Prodeb Brewery
With over a decade of experience, Prodeb Brewery offers:
Custom Brewery Design: Workflow-optimized layouts and capacity planning that fit your vision and budget.
Advanced Beer-Making Machines: High-performance brewhouse systems — including mash tuns, fermenters, and bright tanks — built for durability and sanitation.
On-Site Commissioning & Training: Expert engineers handle installation, calibration, and brewer training so you’re producing consistent, high-quality beer from day one.
End-to-End Project Management: Coordination with architects, contractors, and regulatory bodies keeps your project on schedule and within budget.
4. Diversified Revenue Streams
To boost profits beyond pints:
Gourmet Pairings: Curated small plates, artisanal pizzas, and tapas can raise average checks by up to 30%.
Events & Workshops: Host tasting sessions, corporate gatherings, and private bookings for additional rental and ticket income.
Merchandise & Growlers: Sell branded glassware, apparel, and refillable bottles to deepen customer loyalty and generate retail sales.
Packaged Beer: Launch limited-edition cans or bottles for retail, bars, and home delivery platforms, expanding your brand’s reach.
5. Establishing Brand Trust
Trust is the foundation of lasting success. Showcase your brewing team’s credentials and Prodeb’s track record in marketing materials. Display your FSSAI licence and excise approvals prominently. Share behind-the-scenes videos of your brewing process to highlight rigorous quality controls and connect authentically with customers.
6. Streamlined Compliance & Quality
Regulations vary by state, but Prodeb’s in-house compliance experts manage all licensing, renewals, and clearances. Their automated systems in every beer making machine monitor fermentation parameters in real time — minimizing waste, preventing errors, and ensuring every batch meets your standards.
7. Scalable Growth Strategy
Microbreweries shine in scalability:
Expand Capacity: Add fermenters or upgrade your brewhouse as demand grows.
New Outlets & Franchises: Replicate your proven model in other cities using Prodeb’s modular systems.
At every stage, Prodeb Brewery remains your partner — providing equipment upgrades, fresh training, and operational support to replicate success.
8. High ROI & Rapid Break-Even
With a 5–10 HL system costing ₹4–8 million, fast 7–21-day brew cycles, and near-continuous equipment use, you’ll run multiple batches each month. Input costs average ₹60–₹80 per 330 ml pint, while selling prices sit at ₹300–₹500 — yielding gross margins above 70%. At a steady output of 5 HL per week, most microbreweries recover their investment in just 12–18 months, after which every sale flows directly to profit.
Conclusion With surging demand, premium pricing, diversified revenue channels, and clear scalability, starting a microbrewery today is India’s most profitable business venture in the beverage sector. By selecting optimal locations, building authentic brand trust, and partnering with Prodeb Brewery for industry-leading beer making machines and turnkey expertise, you’ll unlock massive profits — one frothy pint at a time. Cheers to your success!

To effectively protect your asphalt, it’s crucial to first determine the type of crack present, as each kind needs a specific repair approach.
Types of Asphalt Cracks We Repair
Cracks generally fall into two categories: working and non-working.
Non-Working Cracks – These are either vertical or diagonal and extend into the asphalt without any noticeable movement. Unlike working cracks, they don’t expand or contract with temperature shifts, making them easier to fix. Non-working cracks are often caused by temperature fluctuations, traffic, or poor drainage.
Working Cracks – These cracks, whether vertical or horizontal, tend to shift with changes in temperature. Traffic and inadequate drainage can also contribute to these active cracks, which require a more involved repair process due to their movement.

"In mid-1920, the Pennsylvania started to contract-out some of the repairs of locomotives to the giant Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia. In all, 200 locomotives were sent to Baldwin, yet an Interstate Commerce Commission investigation found out that the railroad had paid "$3,173,000 or over $16,000 per locomotive more than it would have cost to do the same work in its own shops." The investigation further found that the Pennsylvania, in fact, had the required shop capacity to do the work but reduced its work force by 10,000 men. For Frank Walsh, the attorney representing the shopcrafts, the explanation for the situation was simple; "the men in control of the bankers and railroads believed it was easier to make money through equipment companies than through the railroads." The Pennsylvania management was "hostile to organized labor and that part of the conspiracy was for the purpose of causing unemployment among the railroad shop crafts."
...
With the Pennsylvania setting the course during 1920, numerous other railroads clamored to contract their work out. The Erie Railroad was one of the first to take advantage of this loophole when in 1921 it leased its Hornell, New York, shops to the Hornell Repair and Construction Co., and its Marion, Ohio, shops to the Railway Service Company. The contracts stipulated that the Erie would retain ownership of tools, could take over the shops on demand, and retained the right "to decide who can be employed." Finding this arrangement successful, the Erie went one step further and signed a contract with the Wagner Construction Co. of Jersey City, New Jersey. What was strange about this contract was that the offices of this company were "operated by the Jersey City Horse Manure Co., with Charles Wagner as President." This arrangement with a "dummy contractor" led one union "operated by the Jersey City Horse Manure Co., with Charles Wagner as President." This arrangement with a "dummy contractor" led one union observer to note caustically:
I will leave it to the reader to figure out for observe the connection between the two lines of business, as I have been unable to come to any logical conclusion why a dealer in horse manure unable how to handle locomotive repairs.
At least forty-four Class 1 railroads engaged in contracting out.
Erie Railroad shopmen discovered that once they were under new ownership their wages were cut, consequently, they walked out on strike at the end of March 1922. The general chairman of System Federation no. 100 called the strike and argued that "the men were sick and tired of being fed up on the law." This chairman then went on to say that there had been innumerable strike votes taken but that "nothing had ever been done." The frustration of the Erie men with their cautious national leadership, and with the bureaucratic constraints of the RLB [Railroad Labour Board], was leading to a breakdown in control. When RED [Railway Employee’s Department of the American Federation of Labor] representative Frank Paquin tried to convince the men to go back to work, the strikers labeled him a dupe of the contractor:
The men were very much inflamed against my presence in the city and they exhibited no modesty in expressing their opinion of me in the worst terms of profanity.
The RED was thus faced with the angry Erie Railroad shopmen; contracting out was spreading; and an unfriendly railroad board was handing down a series of decisions undermining hard-won gains. The approaching Chicago convention of the RED promised to be a lively affair. Set for April 10, 1922, the convention promised to propel the shopcrafts into an aggressive stand against any further attacks, either from the railroads or the RLB.
In a convention hall decked out in exhibits showing the interlocking directorships of railroad owners and managers, with tables showing the degree of bank control of both railroads and equipment companies (contracting firms), Bert Jewell almost immediately found himself defending the actions of the RED. The major criticism voiced was that union leaders had ignored the members' strike vote. Jewell remarked that he couldn't understand this point, because the advantages of holding a strike ballot had been to go "back in [to the RLB hearing] and get a further concession. "
In any event, Jewell argued, the shopcrafts "could not... finance such a strike for any length of time we know how long it has taken by previous experience [Illinois Central and the Harriman strikes) for a shop craftsmen's strike to be effective." Peter Conlon of the IAM [International Association of Machinists] countered Jewell's argument by stating that localized strikes were disastrous, while a national strike would make it difficult for the railroads to find scabs:
I can't conceive where they are going to get enough scabs to fill every position in the shop crafts throughout the length and breadth of our land and I believe it will make the issue short and snappy.
The delegates agreed with Conlon's call for action. One explained he was tired of "getting trimmed at every turn of the road." Another angrily observed, "I feel that the roads are gradually eating into the vitals of our organizations. "
With the bulk of delegates in a fighting mood, a strike ballot was ordered regarding the issues of contracting out and piecework. The question that remained for the convention was how to finance the strike? The leadership pushed for the acceptance of a fixed assessment on the membership, but after a vigorous debate it was decided to call for a voluntary "donation" of 5% rather than an assessment. The more angry delegates had ignored their leaders' pleas for financial preparedness. The convention finished its business on April 22, and the decisions made there profoundly shaped the response of the shopcraft leadership to further attacks by the railroads and the RLB. The members had made clear their intention to strike if contracting out and piecework were not discontinued."

Norman F. Barber General Contractor Los Angeles (Photo taken by Rachel Hughes on April 14, 2024 around Downtown Los Angeles)
In 1912, Norman designed a garage and stable for Richardson, Holmes & Lamb Co., which was constructed by Barber-Bradley Const Co. I'm guessing Barber was the Barber in that company. In the same year, Barber was one of two architects for a concrete store and loft building in downtown Los Angeles for Alexander Meyer, again built by Barber-Bradley. Barber-Bradley were located at 1824 East 15th St. (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 10, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1912 and Engineering News, Volume 69, McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, 1913). In 1909 they were located at 212 W. 3d. (Engineering World: A Weekly Technical Journal of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, mining and Architectural Engineering and Construction, Volume 5, Engineering World Publishing Company, 1907 and Brown, Charles Carroll. Directory of American Cement Industries, Municipal Engineering, 1909). They filed for incorporation on August 1, 1906 in Los Angeles (pg. 36, Annual Report of the Secretary of State, California Secretary of State, California State Printing Office, 1908). By 1907, they were already working on some big projects, like "erecting a manufacturing plant at 2620 Lacy St." for Talbert-Whitmore Co. (Engineering World, March 29, 1907).
In the 1913 Los Angeles City Directory, Barber is listed as a draftsman who lived at 4342 S Flower (Los Angeles Directory Co., Inc., accessed via LAPL).

In 1917, Barber-Bradley was "awarded the general contract ... for the erection of a brick and concrete school building at West Vernon and Olive Sts. in accordance with plans and specifications by Archt. W.C. Pennell." This year also has the only bid I see Barber-Bradley lost! They were not selected to build the "training quarters and bleachers at the new Los Angeles High School site" Some other projects from this year: remodeling the Eisner & Co. store in the Hayward Hotel building, including all work except for tile flooring and including but not limited to "plate and prism glass and marble fronts, mahogany finish and fixtures;" "repairing the fire damage to the 1-story brick warehouse on San Fernando St., opposite the Southern Pacific freight depot, for the Union Warehouse Company; "fitting up a room at 330 S. Main St. for a barber ship (sic);" erecting a brick and concrete school building on the 24th St. school site; and "alterations to Miller's Theatre at Ninth and Main Sts" such as adding a store room adjoining the lobby and a women's bathroom (Southwest Builder and Contractor, Volume 50, F. W. Dodge Company, 1917).

In 1919, Norman was a 'member' of Geo. F. Barber, Sons & Co, a general contracting business located at 4342 S. Flower St. The other member was George F. Barber, which I am guessing was his father (Southwest Builder and Contractor, F.W. Dodge Company, 1919).
Barber lost a bid to build Inglewood's new city hall building to W. M. Bell (Building and Engineering News, Volume 23, Issue 1, 1923) .
Norman F. Barber was the original owner and contractor of the 2-storey single residence at 2615 N. Commonwealth Avenue (Los Feliz Improvement Association Historical Residential Survey 3rd Edition Volume IV: Streets Beginning with Cl to Cu, Los Feliz Improvement Association, 2019).
There was a Norman F. Barber who wrote "Directional recording of swell from distant storms" with Walter H. Munk, Gaylor R. Miller, and Frank E. Snodgrass, as listed in Scripps Institution of Oceanography Contributions Index Vols. 1-39, 1938-1969.
In 1938, "approximately 25 tons of asbestos per month [were] mined from the Canadian mine, located near Chrysotile, Arizona, under the direction of Norman F. Barber, lessee, Box 1010, Globe, Arizona" by four men. The property was owned by the Globe-Los Angeles Mining Company (The Mining Journal for July 15, 1938).
Norman supervised the construction "of 100 unites for Marble Manor Housing, a Public Housing Authority project in Las Vegas, Nev." (Western Construction, Volume 27, King Publications, 1952).
