스무 살 전후 PC통신 음악 동호회 게시판에 글을 올리면서 시작한 글쓰기 습관은 처음엔 단순히 재미 삼아 썼으나 나이를 먹어감에 따라 더 진실한 문장을 쓰고 싶은 욕망이 차올라, 어느 때부턴가 뇌수련의 방편으로 태도가 바뀌었다. 그전까진 띄엄띄엄 맘 내킬 때 글을 썼었다면 이때부턴 어떤 내용이든 하루에 한두 줄이라도 꼭 작문하는 생활을 이어갔다. 매일매일 푸시업, 스콰트, 태극권, 요가 등등을 행하는 루틴에 글쓰기를 추가한 것.

1년에 365개씩, 3년이면 1,095개 글이 쌓인다. '인간으로 태어난 것 = 초기조건'을 한 달란트라고 했을 때 스토리텔링 능력을 타고 났다면 한 달란트 추가해 희곡, 소설, 시나리오 작가 등이 됐을 거고, 언어를 함축할 수 있는 능력을 타고 났다면 한 달란트 추가해 시인이 됐을 거고, 글을 청각화 할 수 있는 능력을 타고 났다면 한 달란트 추가해 음악가가 됐을 거고, 글을 시각화 할 수 있는 능력을 타고 났다면 한 달란트 추가해 미술가가 됐겠지만 나처럼 특출난 재능이 없는 사람은 자신이 체험한 거 외엔 쓰질 못한다. 집중력과 근기마저 없는 평범인이 쌓을 수 있는 유일한 밑천은 오랜 세월 모으고 모아 놓은 성실함의 증거들뿐이다. 비록 결과물이 산처럼 우뚝 서지 못하고, 있는 듯 없는 듯 언덕에 불과하긴 하지만.

또한 나는 글쓰기를 자신을 향한 존재 증명 행위로 인식한다 = 강박이 있다 = 안 하거나 못 하면 불안해진다. 그래서 나이 먹어 어느 때에 운동(=몸공부)을 못하게 되면 살아 있어도 죽은 몸이고, 글을 못 쓰게 되면 살아 있어도 뇌사 상태가 아니겠냐고 느낀다. 강박을 다르게 표현하면 권태 지옥에서 벗어나고자 발악하는 기록성애자가 남긴 투쟁의 흔적이라 할 수도 있을 듯.

제임스 켐벨(James Campbell)이란 클라리넷 연주자와 진 디노비(Gene DiNovi)란 피아노 연주자가 함께 연주한 '맨하탄 에코(Manhattan Echoes)'란 음반에 'Last night when we were young'란 곡이 있다. 내년은 경제가 굉장히 어려워질 거라고 들었다. 그럼에도 일단은 매년 늘 그랬듯 아바의 'Happy New Year'를 들으며 자정을 보낼 것이다. 그러고 나면 2022년은 '우리가 한 살이나마 더 어렸던 지난 밤'으로 남을 것.

AUSTRALIA: Andrew Scott Quartet - The Brightest Minute

  Bebop lives in the hands of these four musicians dedicated to the American musical traditions of the 1940s and 50s. Recorded live off-the-floor in a Toronto studio, this recording demonstrates that spontaneity and creativity can easily materialize when fine musicians with shared sensibilities join forces on a fertile set of traditionally-based material. Reminiscent of Barney Kessel's work with Hampton Hawes or Jimmy Raney's output with Sonny Clark, Scott focuses largely on single-note lines placed over a swinging piano trio for impressive results. There is no doubting the authenticity and deep commitment to the tenets of tone, taste and good time that all of the musicians evidence here. Following up on recorded ensemble work done with Harry Allen, Randy Sandke, Gene DiNovi, Dan Block and Jon-Erik Kellso, Scott has assembled an ensemble of his colleagues for this outing that includes his longstanding trumpet partner Jake Wilkinson, heard here on piano.
