A plea deal reached this week with the alleged mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, along with two of his alleged accomplices, has been retracted, the Pentagon announced Friday.

In a memo, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that the "three pre-trial agreements" approved with Khalid Shaikh Mohammad — the man accused of planning the attacks — and Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin 'Attash and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi, had been rescinded.

The memo was addressed to retired Brigadier Gen. Susan Escallier, the convening authority for military commissions who oversaw the deal. Austin wrote that he was withdrawing her "authority" in the case and reserving "such authority to myself."

The military commission at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Wednesday sent letters sent to families of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the al-Qaida attacks said the plea agreement stipulated the three would serve life sentences.

Some families of the attacks' victims condemned the deal for cutting off any possibility of full trials and possible death penalties. Republicans were quick to fault the Biden administration for the deal, although the White House said after it was announced it had no knowledge of it.

In nullifying the plea agreement, Austin wrote in the order that "in light of the significance of the decision," he had decided that the authority to make a decision on accepting the plea agreements was his.

Mohammed and the other defendants had been expected to formally enter their pleas under the deal as soon as next week.

The U.S. military commission overseeing the cases of five defendants in the Sept. 11 attacks have been stuck in pre-trial hearings and other preliminary court action since 2008. The torture that the defendants underwent while in CIA custody has slowed the cases and left the prospect of full trials and verdicts still uncertain, in part because of the inadmissibility of evidence linked to the torture.

Earlier Friday, the Republican-led House Oversight and Accountability Committee announced it was launching an investigation into whether the White House was involved in the plea deal.

Day 3 kudu bgt hangout ini kami, alhamdulillah bisa menyempatkan ditengah masih sibuk kumpul keluarga dari pihak pasangan masing2. Ponakan baru dari kelg suaminya, sepupu sebaya siangan mau ke kelg suaminya, aa sepupu sorean ke kelg istrinya. Begitulah dgn acaranya msg2, kelg kami semakin besar dan punya urusan msg2 pula. Di hari ini yg tetep persepupuan ngga lengkap bisa ngumpul segini, teteh sepupu harus ke kelg suaminya yg sakit, aa sepupu baru punya bayi anak ke 3 jd pst riweuh gapada bisa dateng, adik sepupuku terjebak di cimahi menunggu lahiran karena udah minggu hplnya. Gapernah lengkap tp yaa mau gmn lagi huhu, mudah2an suatu saat bisa lengkap yaa~

Janjian di cafe baru buka namanya Domo, menunya berbau2 jepang gt deh. Mayanlah minuman dan makanannya..

Sebelum pada bubar dgn urusannya msg2, kita janjian jam 10an krn udah buka katanya, mayan dari singaparna ke tkp di tasik sekitar 20k lah jaraknya. Jd kita kesana nyampe jam 11an gt mana kepotong jumatan. Oiya td ponakan laki yg dah lama bgt ngga ktemu hadir mampir doang, msh single kerja di CNN jkt, jd staff kdg disuruh2 jd voice over, talented lah euy si adeeee! Lg cari jodoh umurnya skrg 27 apa 28 ya si ade wkwk lupa~ kalem lah lakik mah..

Foto2 lainnya karena ngga cukup sekali yakaaan! Banyak bgt ihhh dikala space hp sedikit lg foto2 lebaran kudu ada dong..

Happy sekali kalo udah kumpul sama persepupuan ini yg rata2 gen milenial haha pokonya dari kelahiran 82-92 termasuk para pasangannya. Seuseurian wae pokonyamah! Bayik nambah 3, 1 lg otw nih dari cimahi, makin banyak geng kita tp ttp pgn staycation di villa yg gatau bakalan sgede apa villanya weeyyy mana pgn ada privat pool katanya.

Akhirnya kita kudu pisah, 2 kelg kudu ke keluarga pasangannya huhu. Kita bubaran sekitar jam 2 lebihan. Kalo geng bdg mah lsg melipir kemana2 dulu dong sesuai planning kita di tasik kudu main dan kumpul sebisa mungkin ah! Karena jrg2, akupun dipikir2 terakhir ke tasik lebaran tahun lalu hiks.. Ada bbrp acara yg aku skip soalnya huhu. Oiya baso tasik beloomm.. Kemarin pas lebaran belinya cm baso kampung aja kan belom baso benerannya yg seenak baso firman gituuu!

Kita mampir ke rumah sepupu cimahi alias bibiku yg punya rumah di tasik jg, mampir nginep kita. Tak ada hentinya beberengkes, lelah bgttt tp happy.. Badan rontok, kurang tidur tp dinikmati namanya jg lg suasana lebaran dan mudik haha.

Deket komplek rumah bibiku jalan sekitar 300m ada situgede cuy. Mampir bentar kesana cuma liat2 aja haha.. Enakeun ih kalo sambil jogging keknya tp aku beneran ngga bebawaan alat tempur lari wey krn ya pst ngga ada tenaga, bener jg ih.. Keburu lelah weh sedangkan kalo lelah ngaruh sama performa lari nanti tuh malah ngga enakeun. Dahlah sabar aja sminggu libur mah wkwk. Tadinya pgn menjajal jg lari di luar kota gt biar maps stravanya bukan di bdg aja hahahaha.

day 2: i rly feel the degradation of the body as we grow older. how is it that this was the same body i fasted while training? hesitant also to use the word degradation bc i am turning only 30 this year - baby numbers in the increasing lifespan of human beans!! gr8ful however for continuing to focus on my body in a healthy way, may we all be blessed with good health even in our golden years.

been having the craziest migraines the past two days and i think it's partially bc of this infernal heat. i can weather the harshest of winters but a tropics girlie i am NOT. anything above 33 degree and im folding plus humid countries make me want 2 ascend this corporeal flesh bag and turn into a rain cloud. being part of climate research and reading the latest studies make my heart feel v heavy tho - i don't want 2b pessimistic but it's hard to see real, tangible change happening. my hope is that i can do enough to pave the way at least so even if change doesn't happen in my gen, it'll be in the next. lowkey want it 2 happen in my time tho bc these migraines are not it.

ayah today made me tear up a bit bc i know he would rather have iftar at the mosque but he came back home today so i wouldn't have to iftar alone. he also said he will come back whenever i have to iftar at home so we can break fast together 🥺😭❤️ bc of my migraine i was also feeling v woozy so ibu and ayah taught me how to pray sitting down so it would be more comfy. they both also said i could/should be an MUA which is very validating. gr8ful for them both 😭❤️😭❤️😭❤️😭

nfs has also been accompanying me lately bc i havent been feeling well and spiraling which is v sweet considering she is a Teenager™. she knows im an acts of service girlie and has been running to get me cold towel compresses for my migraine, putting the kets in my room so i feel better and just staying w me when she knows i have nightmares/am sad 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

while writing this also i am gr8ful bc even tho the past couple days were Not Fun and ya girl is suffering, it also remind me that i havent had many bad days in a long while, which is a far cry from 2020-2022 when bad days, whether physical or mental, were the norm. Alhamdulillah for all growth and for all improvements, may betterment underscore my future in this world and the next.

When I was a kid, I was super scared that my online community, my one true home and the place I spend time at the most, would hate me if they ever discovered that I was Muslim.

BUT, I just turned 17, AND I've learned that our generation is way better than all this hatred bullshit. Like yeah, okay, we are not perfect. But we are goddamn superheroes who are one of a kind more than anything.

July 2022 Current Events: Lighthearted Edition

Since my last post blew up, I decided to make another recap of the political/media events of this month (as of now its only July 9), but this time I’m noting some of the more fun/positive stories that came out of the news cycle

- Slovenia’s court published their decision to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption (as well as blood donations from MLM)

- Chile has drafted a new constitution to undo the workings of former right-wing dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet following the mass protests of 2019; this new constitution is not facing any interference from the U.S., and will have a focus on protecting oppressed minorities

- July 8-9, 2022 is Eid al-Adha, one of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam (to any Muslims out there, Eid Mubarak!)

The move deals another blow to the United Nations’ effort to call a cease-fire in Libya after a months-long offensive by Haftar’s Libyan National Army to seize Tripoli, the capital. East Africa’s huge locust outbreak now spreads to Congo (AP) A small group of desert locusts has entered Congo, marking the first time the voracious insects have been seen in the Central African country since 1944, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency said Tuesday as U.N. agencies warned of a “major hunger threat” in East Africa from the flying pests. Kenya, Somalia and Uganda have been battling the swarms in the worst locust outbreak that parts of East Africa have seen in 70 years.
