Father, dear Father
"Father, dear Father", a review of 'Spanish Steps' at Theatre on the Square in Sandton, until 24 February 2024.
THE ugly faces of office politics in a job that wasn’t anyone’s dream: Barry (Gavin Werner) and Maureen (Dianne Simpson) in Spanish Steps at Theatre on the Square in Sandton, until 24 February. THERE’S NOTHING QUITE like being holed in an uncomfortable situation, for an indefinite period, with a colleague you barely know for an ice-breaker to manifest. This is what happens when Maureen from HR…

X-Men 18 (March 1966)
Stan Lee/Jay Gavin
We're baaaaack with the X-Men who are being sent to their death my Magneto in a giant balloon which will eventually reach space, killing them. Magneto-ass plan. However Iceman is not among them, so it's all down to him this week.
Tumblr media
He, however, is still back at the Hospital Where Everyone Is Sexy. What is this nurse doing?
Tumblr media
As mentioned, Jack Kirby has now left the title, leaving Werner Roth (credited as Jay Gavin) doing the art: his faces and expressions are quite a bit better, but clearly the scripting was still calling for weird Kirby-esque machinery that Roth made rather mundane.
Tumblr media
Anyway yeah that's Magneto, who has returned from being imprisoned in fucking space, something we see only briefly in flashback. You would think this would be a bigger deal.
Tumblr media
Here's a huge problem I haven't talked about yet: Iceman's ice effects look terrible. Is this a whirlwind? An ice patch? A magic crystal? They've never yet looked good in the series, and when they take up whole panels his ice constructs just make the art look empty and thin.
Tumblr media
This is arguably true of Iceman himself too: certainly in panels like this.
Tumblr media
Anyway in the end he does save the day, while Xavier brings the balloon back down, and Magneto vanishes once again. This is an issue that tried to throw some of the focus onto one character, which is a good thing to do from time to time in a team story, and the stuff about his youth and inexperience is good, but it does also kind of end up highlighting how weak Iceman's presentation can be.

If actor Gavin Leatherwood was a computer software, his two basic functions would be to create and connect. Upon learning this, we were even more curious to figure out who this guy is that had graced our telly - tied up mostly in hell - during Sunday binges of 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'. So we decided to ask him straight, right off the bat. Photography by Emilia Staugaard. Interview by Hedvig Werner. Fashion by Jamie Ortega.

Listed: Dallas Acid
Tumblr media
Dallas Acid is a trio from Austin, Texas that first convened in 2015 to play music inspired by the synthesizer-oriented ensembles of the 1970s. Laaraji is a zither player who had been busking for years in New York’s Washington Square Park before Brian Eno heard him and asked him to come on down to the studio. Their LP, Day of Radiance, marks the intersection of the new age and ambient music genres. Laaraji and his musical partner Arji OceAnanda shared a gig with Dallas Acid in early 2018, after which they went into the studio. This encounter yielded a collaborative LP, Arrive Without Leaving. The members of Dallas Acid compiled this list.
We are sure that most people reading this will probably know about these records already, but these are ten of our favorite, all-time classics that have had the greatest influence on our music. There are literally hundreds of others we should include, but these should be easy to find for those who are unfamiliar and curious. In no particular order:
Steve Hillage—Rainbow Dome Musick
youtube
Canterbury’s epic prog guitar master collaborated with long-time partner Miquette Giraudy in 1979 on Arps, EMS & some modular Moogs, taking our favorite moments from their work with Gong and solo albums to create this early ambient masterpiece. Rediscovered as come-down music in the height of KLF-fueled rave culture in the late 80s, Rainbow Dome Musick offers a different approach to the ambient genre than the work of Eno and the Krautrock pioneers. The two sides of this LP are very effective in creating a reality with no beginning and no end.
Popul Vuh—Hosiana Mantra/Aguirre
youtube
It was so hard to pick just one Popul Vuh record, so we picked two! Both recorded in 1972 and yet worlds apart, the soundtrack for Werner Herzog’s Aguirreis dominated by its beautiful minimalist Moog compositions. OnHosiana Mantra, Florian Fricke goes acoustic with a full band and vocalist Djong Yun, producing reverent, meditative, therapeutic, and maybe slightly unsettling compositions that will definitely make you a better person after just one listening.
Klaus Schulze—Moondawn
youtube
This 1976 LP was our introduction to Klaus Schulze’s work with sequencers. Cyborgand Irrlictwere both big influences on us texturally and structurally, but hearing the way he seemed to use the sequencer to drive composition changed the way we approached songwriting. This is the first in a series of great albums for Klaus over the next couple of years, but it also feels like the first LP to feature his classic analogue space station with all components operating in optimal harmony. Plus, you get to hear Harald Grosskopf (who’s own solo 1980 LP Synthesistis fantastic) play some pretty crazy percussion on the record.
Fripp & Eno—(No Pussyfooting)
Shortly after leaving Roxy Music, Brian Eno had been experimenting with an extended tape-delay system (first developed by Pauline Oliveros and Terry Riley) and teamed up with virtuoso guitarist Robert Fripp to create one of the most unique and revered recordings of Ambient/Experimental/Electronic music. 1973’s (No Pussyfooting)is not quite yet ambient music as we would come to know it but offers some incredible exploration into what was then an undefined genre. Fripp’s technique and concoction of effects would be known as Frippertronics, and while many over the 45 years since have attempted to imitate, none has matched the exceptional playing on this LP.
Ashra—New Age of Earth
youtube
Manuel Göttsching’s reputation as an innovative guitarist with Ash Ra Tempel had been well established by the time he released this 1976 adventure into synth-guitar experimentation. ARPs, Farfisa and an EMS are given equal importance as the echo-driven guitar hypnosis technique that came to define his style. Still too dirty to be true “New Age” this LP captures Göttsching at his most innovative and tasteful, with the perfect balance of darkness and light.
Spiritualized—Lazer Guided Melodies
youtube
I was very luckily to see Spiritualized with this classic line-up in Los Angeles on the Rollercoaster US tour back in 1992. Those first few records with Kate on keys and Will on bass are still our favorites. So magical - the perfect combination of minimalist restraint and calculated explosions of ecstasy. This EP collection has an incredible transportive quality that just hasn’t been outdone since.
Nico—Desertshore
youtube
This 1970 album is definitely a dive into the darkness but might be the most beautiful of all the records we’ve listed. While John Cale’s influence & contributions are clear, it might be the furthest Nico strayed from the Velvet Underground days. You are immediately overpowered by the droning harmonium and rendered almost immobile by her stark words and monotone vocals. If you survive a single listening without an intense emotional reaction, you truly contain the stuff from which all future anti-depressants should be made.
Gavin Bryars—The Sinking of the Titanic
youtube
Ex-Scratch Orchestra member Gavin Bryars used bit of dark humor as the inspiration for this slow-moving composition for strings. As the Titanic sank, legend has it, the ship’s band continued to play on. First released in 1975 on Eno’s Obscure Records, the recording is increasingly affected over time to simulate the changes in sound reverberation as they sank further into the ocean.
Terry Riley—Shri Camel
youtube
Using a YC-45D modified for just intonation and an early digital delay, Terry Riley adds an Indian tonality to his signature minimalist style. Composed in 1975 but not released until 1980 Shri Camel feels more open and tranquil than many of his previous recordings. Transformative.
LARAAJI—Essence/Universe
Essence/Universe by Laraaji
Obviously we hold the entire LARAAJI catalogue in great esteem, but this 1987 release, re-issued a few years ago on Brian Eno’s All Saints label, is probably our favorite. The ambient master’s zither is more affected than on his other recordings, creating incredible, almost super-natural, reverberated washes of shimmering ecstasy. The two side-long tracks achieve a vibration which is uniquely meditative, even for a musician who’s entire life’s work has been defined by its thoughtfully measured cosmic flow.

X-Men 14 (Nov 1965)
Stan Lee/Jack Kirby, Jay Gavin.
Once again Stan Lee has remembered - as he does once every four issues, while totally forgetting in-between - that the X-Men are about being a hated and feared minority. This time, the charge is being led by an anthropologisy with a face that looks like it's meant to be a parody of someone specific even if it isn't: yes, it's Bolivar Trask.
Tumblr media
The thing I most want to know about Bolivar Trask, aside from why his face is like that, is why his name is like that. Were his parents huge Simon Bolivar stans? Why is this not addressed?
Actually though this stuff is great. Here's the X-Men's first ever glimpse of a nightmare future, something the whole franchise would eventually become obsessed with and run into the ground: but ironically the very first instance of the theme is as anti-mutant propaganda.
Tumblr media
This stuff is great - after the newspaper there's some TV stuff too, with Xavier going on national TV to debate Trask, though it turns out to be a trap.
If the faces here look a a bit different - I still don't like Trask's, but it's interesting, and the looks of the bystanders and TV watchers here are really good - that may be because this is the first issue where art issues were shared by Kirby and "Jay Gavin", a pseudonym for Werner Roth, who was moonlighting on X-Men for a few issues. Roth was mostly not a superhero guy - he did a lot of Western comics - and you can see that he has a different, surer way of handling faces and features than Kirby did.
Tumblr media
We are instantly back to Kirby-style stuff when the interview turns out to be a trap and the Sentinels show up, though. The Sentinels are 100% Kirby: unsettling space Aztecs that ought to be goofy as hell but somehow work.
Tumblr media
Also in this issue: the X-Men, who are at the beatnik club again. The word libido! Racy!
Tumblr media
Summoned from the club, the X-Men have a showdown with the Sentinels, who are famously unstoppable, like all X-Men villains, but do represent something new in their technological menace, which is a nice contrast to all the mutant vs mutant stuff we've seen so far. They also create a nice problem of scale: being two or three times taller than a person, the logistics of fighting them, and therefore the kind of fight scenes you get, are totally new.
Tumblr media
The X-Men can't win but the Sentinels break off the fight to abduct Trask himself, who in another nice bit of storytelling has already realised he's gone too far: but he can't stop the Sentinels now and they take him back to their hyper-Kirby base, with the X-Men in pursuit...

Lo! Now Shall Appear -- The Mimic!
Tumblr media
Uncanny X-Men #19. April, 1966. By Stan Lee and Jay Gavin (Werner Roth).
The X-Men are in another training session supervised by Cyclops. The session is once more interrupted by Iceman's childish games and the session is preempted temporarily while Cyke takes Bobby down a peg. Cyclops then tests Hank's time record for dealing with a trap door test which Hank passes with flying colors. The Professor enters the room and applauds his students’ good work and tells them that after their great performance against the Sentinels and Magneto, and the fact that they are at their fighting peak, he has assigned them all a brief vacation. The team then off their costumed identities and go into the city in their civilian guises.
Hank and Bobby go to the library where they are to meet Bobby's girlfriend Zelda to join Hank on a blind date with Zelda's friend Vera. Hank has his reservations about meeting this woman, but becomes instantly smitten when he finds that Vera works at the local library. Along the way to their scheduled date, they run into Calvin Rankin, a young man who has been trying to get Vera to go out on dates with him. Jealous that Vera is out with Hank, the hot tempered Rankin starts to fight Hank. Hank pulls his punches, attempting to hide his mutant nature, however when Hank attempts to fight back he is surprised to find that Calvin somehow has powers the same as him. After he easily trounces Hank, Bobby attempts to fight back, but is hit in the face with a snowball by Calvin. Just then, construction workers notice the fight and attempt to stop Calvin from beating up Bobby, however Calvin manages to dodge a thrown brick and suddenly creates an ice wall to protect him from other projectiles. Surprised at these new abilities, Calvin flees up the side of a building, evading the arriving construction workers.
Tumblr media
Surprised, Calvin recognizes his new abilities as powers that belong to two of the X-Men, and correctly deduces that Hank and Bobby are secretly Beast and Iceman. He then tests out his new abilities, hoping to use them to destroy the X-Men, however they eventually fade away. Calvin forgot that the skills he mimics from others fade away once he is far enough away from the people he mimicked them from.
Tumblr media
Returning to the streets and going out for coffee, Calvin runs into Jean Grey while she is out shopping when she accidentally bumps into him. After rudely shouting at her, Calvin sits down at the table and realizes that he's also mimicked telekinetic powers and realizes the redhead he's bumped into is none other than Marvel Girl. Realizing the X-Men must be in town in their civilian identities, Calvin decides to follow Jean to discover the location of the X-Men's secret base.
Showing up at the mansion wearing a pair of ruby quartz glasses and a harness (so as to hide his mimicking of Cyclops and Angel's powers) Calvin shows up at the X-Mansion under the false pretense of "apologizing" for the fight he enticed earlier, and asks to join Xavier's school. He first mimics Professor X's telepathy when the Professor attempts to mind probe Calvin and finds that he cannot access his mind. He then meets all of the X-Men, mimicking their powers upon shaking their hands. The reception is less than warm, and Calvin realizes that none of the X-Men trust him. Allowed to be excused to go upstairs for a moment, the Professor tells his charges that he suspects that Rankin is up to no good and since he has deduced the X-Men's identities that they should change into their costumes and be prepared for an attack.
Tumblr media
Sure enough, Calvin returns downstairs wearing a specially made costume. Calling himself Mimic, he tells the X-Men that he intends to defeat them with copies of their own powers. Mimic then takes down Angel with a combination of his and Beast's powers, deflects attacks from Cyclops and Iceman by using the opposites powers as a defense against the attacks. With one-on-one attacks ineffectual, the Professor orders the X-Men to attack Mimic as a team. Mimic manages to defend himself and fight the X-Men off. As the team of mutants regroup, Mimic then nabs Marvel girl and flees in a car, with her as his hostage. The X-Men follow in their helicopter hoping to catch him before he can harm Jean.
Mimic (now with all his stolen powers gone except for Marvel Girl's telekinetic power) takes Jean to an abandoned mine where Jean is surprised to find a hidden living space within. There, Mimic tells Jean his startling origins: He explains that his father was a scientist who disallowed Calvin to ever enter his lab. However, one day the defiant Calvin was snooping around his father's lab and accidentally knocked over a beaker filled with chemicals his father was working on causing it to smash open and cover him in a strange gas. Finding that he was okay, Calvin soon realized that the exposure to the chemicals somehow changed him. When in a school yard brawl with the school's boxing champ, he somehow developed his opponents boxing skills. Later he would find that he could absorb the skills of those who were around him, however his sudden bouts of perfection caused his friends to become suspicious of him and shun him.
Learning what had happened to his son and suspecting the people in town would eventually turn against his boy, Calvin's father relocated them to an abandoned mine in the hopes of working on a way to make his son's powers permanent. However, the experiments required a heavy use of power. The townspeople learned the source of the power drain and formed a mob, converging on the cave. Warned of their coming by his alarm system, Calvin's father attempted to bar their attack by blasting closed the main entrance. However, he underestimated the force of the explosion and this oversight cost the elder Rankin his life. The machine that could potentially make Mimic's powers permanent was buried in the explosion. After his father’s body was buried, the young Calvin vowed to get revenge on the world once he found a way to make his power permanent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With his story finished, Jean properly deduces that Mimic intends to use the X-Men's powers in order to clear the rubble and free the machine that could make Mimic unbeatable. Mimic soon detects the arrival of the other X-Men when Angel's wings begin to sprout from his back once more. Rushing to the cave, Mimic then uses his returning optic blast to begin clearing through the debris. Meanwhile, the X-Men cautiously enter the cave and free Jean who would warn them of Mimic's plans.
Tumblr media
Mimic meanwhile has managed to break his way through to his father’s lab and before he can open the door to the device he seeks, he is attacked by the X-Men, who have caught up with him. Mimic manages to fight off the X-Men and grab the Professor as his hostage to keep the X-Men at bay while he uses his father’s machine. However, instead of making his mimicking powers permanent, the device actually strips Calvin of this ability and knocks him out in the process. The X-Men, realizing the machine is overloading, carry the Professor and Rankin to safety before it explodes, destroying the entire lab. The X-Men then change Calvin back to his civilian guise and the Professor removes all memory of his identity as Mimic and sends the boy on his way, hoping that he can get a fresh new start. With the threat of Mimic ended, the X-Men return home.
From Marvel Wikia
It amazes me that, even though most of the origins Stan Lee created are very similar, the stories he tells are usually very different. This is an achievement for a writer working on almost all the main titles.
The story is a bit simple, no twists or anything. But it starts and ends in one issue, while introducing new characters, which is not bad.
I give the issue a score of 8.
