The hero tumbled to the ground. The ice slide the villain had conjured touched down just past the wall surrounding the hero agency. Tall, barbed wire, electrocuted, spikes on top. The whole thing. The hero had barely rolled onto the road past it when the villain came sliding down, notably more elegant than the former. They slid into a standing position and flicked their wrist; the whole slide melted and came crashing down. The hero was splashed as they struggled to their feet. Their diary was stuck under their elbow. The villain’s words before they came down were stuck in their head. 

“Come on,” the villain said, taking the hero’s arm and pulling them along.

“Where are we going?” The hero asked breathlessly.

“My car. Unless you can teleport us away.” 

“I can’t really teleport far.” Their powers were made for close combat. “Wait, a car?” 

“Yep. It follows me around.”

“Actually?” the hero asked.

They didn’t even try to not sound impressed. The villain smiled. It grew wider when the pair turned into an alley, and there it was. It had only been a few hours, but the villain had missed the slick, black paint job and leather seat. The lights blinked as the villain approached. It has missed them as well.

“Come on,” the villain said, sliding into the driver’s seat.

Not that the car needed to be driven. They just liked to. The villain pressed their wrist to the wheel, starting the engine. The hero sat in the passenger seat and slammed the door behind them. They didn’t have time to put on a seatbelt before the villain was pulling out of the alley at an alarming speed. 

“What the- hang on,” the hero said, frantically snapping their seat belt in place.

“No time.” the villain said.

They only seemed to say that when it inconvenienced the hero. The villain turned onto the road. Almost immediately, they could hear it. That whining siren. The hero agency’s special wail, to let you know the criminals were of a supernatural nature. The hero turned around and saw the three cars chasing them.

“Crap,” they said. 

“Don’t worry, the car and I’ve got this.” the villain said confidently.

They laid into the gas pedal. The hero held on for dear life. All the cars on the road hurried to pull over. The car chirped mechanically.

“What?” the villain responded, then checked their rearview mirror. “Oh.”

The hero whipped their head around. Oh was one word for it. Someone was pointing a gun at their tires out the passenger window of the front most.

“They can’t do that.” the hero said, panicked. “They gave us a whole lecture on how we can’t do that.”

“Special circumstances?” the villain said, swerving unexpectedly to the left as the first shot was heard.

The car chirped again.

“Well, it didn’t hit you, did it?” the villain said, rolling their eyes.

“What is this? Where did you get a magic car?” the hero asked.

“Magical car dealership.”

“Actually, where?”

The villain shrugged. “I know a mechanic who does special jobs. Mentally linking you to your car through a chip implant is one of them. Makes car chases more fun.”

Shots kept firing. The villain kept avoiding them, going faster, and turning unpredictably. It was too fast. The hero gripped their diary to concentrate on anything other than the possibility of a fiery death. The villain laughed at a joke their car told them and slid sunglasses over their eyes. 

Eventually, the bullets ran out. The villain spoke urgently.

“Okay, teleport us.” 

“What?” the hero asked.

“Right now. As far as you can. Give us the edge to lose the tails.”

“I’ve never done a car before.” the hero said incredulously. 

They had never done more than one other person.

“Just try.” the villain said. 

Whatever. The hero sighed, dropped the diary on their lap, and touched their hands to the side and top of the car. 

“You can do it.” the villain said, softly.

The hero closed their eyes and concentrated. Focusing on something made their powers stronger. The hero didn’t have to pick their brain for a topic. The villain was truly ridiculous. All the time, but especially now. With their aviator sunglasses. Their ill-timed laughs. Their voice. Their soft voice told the hero they could do it. The hero felt magic buzzing off their fingertips. They kept going. They imagined the villain using that voice, calling them sweetheart. Sweetheart.

And the hero felt staticky waves of energy bolt away from them. A bright spark. A shining moment where everything shifted. The only things that stayed were the car and the villain. The car hit the road again, and the hero opened their eyes. They were stopped. In a quiet suburb. The cars were nowhere to be seen. They looked at the villain. Their companion had their mouth open in shock, their sunglasses sliding down their nose.

“Oh my gods,” the villain said. “We’re halfway across the city.”

“Yeah. . .” the hero said, looking around.

Townhouses surrounded them. Tall and protective. Did the hero do this? They weren’t sure it wasn’t the doing of the villain’s car. 

“That was top-notch.” The villain said. 

“Thanks,” the hero responded, looking down. 

There was their diary. The villain’s earlier words came back to them. 

“Wait, you said you wanted my diary for a reason.” the hero held it up.

The villain looked at the journal. Was that a blush? The car chirped.

“Shut up.” the villain whispered.

The hero didn’t move. They waited for an answer. The villain rubbed their forehead.

“Right. Let’s go somewhere safe first. I have a safehouse your agency doesn’t know about. Then we can talk about it. Okay?”

The hero lowered their arm. Sweetheart. At the word, another zip of electricity passed through them. Teleporting always wore them out, but they were still on an adrenaline high. Maybe enough to survive whatever the villain wanted to tell them.

So yesterday I started my trek from very north PNW back to the bay area in NorCal for my next travel assignment. All set to start Monday...

Fucking long ass story slightly shorter, but my car broke down (not sure the exact issue, but it won’t accelerate like past 10mph) and of course it happened in the middle of nowhere Oregon where I had no cell service (I can't remember the last time I had no service - places like that still exist???). Managed to get to a gas station like 6:30 pm and use their phone to call AAA for a tow. But the gas station closed at 7pm, so no way to get updates from AAA. Sat there alone in my car for almost 3 hours. Thankfully it was a well lit area and the woman who closed up assured me there were cameras around and let her boss know I was there. Had to resort to calling 911, and they patched me through to the Ohio state police, who called AAA for me to follow up when the first eta of 90 min was more than 30 min past.

Finally, got a tow truck back to Eugene, where I booked a last minute hotel as soon as service kicked back in. This is such a fucking mess.
