stands a proper and prominent synagogue, as if telling all concerned, that the Jews of Glasgow are here to stay, and equally deserving of a splendid house of worship to celebrate Shabbat and festivals that can easily compete with a host of surrounding Anglican and Roman churches.

Day 356 of 365 Photo Challenge. Happy Hanukkah, "Chag Urim Sameach" to the Jewish Community. Garnethill Synagogue is the historic 'cathedral synagogue' of Scotland. It is located in Garnethill, Glasgow. The synagogue was built in the period of 1879-81. It was designed by John McLeod of Dumbarton, in conjunction with London-based architect Nathan Solomon Joseph of the United Synagogue. McLeod designed a number of churches and public buildings in Glasgow and the west of Scotland, including the Women’s Christian Association in Bath Street, Glasgow. The building's exterior is Romanesque revival. The basilica-form, orientalist style interior features Byzantine revival detail. As the main building stands between east and west, the apse in the interior stands towards the east facing Garnet Street. This accords with customs within Jewish religion to face Jerusalem in the east whilst praying. Likewise, the Torah ark is positioned at the east end of the synagogue, which is faced whilst praying. Particularly notable is the splendid Torah Ark, designed by Nathan S. Joseph, it closely resembles the Ark he designed for London's New West End Synagogue. Both Arks are raised on platforms, approached by a series of circular, marble steps and project into the room in the form is a multi-domed and arched building. The main entrance doorway is eight feet wide. Carved in the stone above in Hebrew, is Devarim (Deuteronomy) Chapter 32, verse 12. The English translation is "God alone let him, and there was no strange God with him". The numerical value of the Hebrew letters used in this verse adds up to the date of the foundation of the building. The area of the building set apart for men accommodates 362 worshippers; the gallery set apart for ladies 218, giving a total of 580 seats. Garnethill Synagogue has been described as the finest example of high Victorian synagogue architecture north of Liverpool. Another wonderful day in Scotland with @artistaviv - today began with a visit to the historic Garnethill Synagogue, home of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre. 🔯🕍📚💕✨ A stunningly beautiful building (constructed in 1879)... And the very helpful staff of the SJAC helped me locate some of my Scottish relatives (not a joke!!! 😂🙌🏽💖) - scroll through to see the wedding registry entry for my great-grandfather's brother, Abraham Polisky, in Glasgow, 1903. Proudly sporting my new tartan kippah!

The Daily Thistle
The Daily Thistle – News From Scotland
Friday 4th May 2018
"Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you….  What a beautiful early morning, heaven full of stars, empty streets and walking with my Bella.. I can see the hint of a sunrise on the western horizon soon at 4am it will be early dawn, so it's best to take advantage of the darkness now, that way I can look at the stars I spoke of yesterday...
PET OWNERS WARNED OVER CAT POISONINGS IN DALKEITH…. Pet owners have been urged to be vigilant when letting their cats out after two cats were poisoned in Midlothian. One cat had to be put down after ingesting the antifreeze in Taylor Place in Dalkeith. The liquid is usually colourless and odourless, but it has a sweet taste that appeals to dogs in particular, but cats will also ingest it. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, head shaking and coma. The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after two cats have been poisoned on Taylor place in Dalkeith. Scotland's animal welfare charity was alerted after a cat had to be put to sleep and another, on the same street, took ill after ingesting anti-freeze. Stephanie McCrossan, of the Scottish SPCA, said: "The poisoning of domestic animals is a huge issue and we deal with a large number of complaints regarding poisonings and they are incredibly difficult to solve due to the nature of the crime. "Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is one of the most common causes of cat poisoning, particularly in the winter months. The liquid is usually colourless and odourless, but it has a sweet taste that appeals to dogs in particular, but cats will also ingest it. "By the time symptoms occur, such as vomiting, lethargy and, in the latter stages, head shaking and coma, it is normally too late to treat. Renal failure is most often the cause of death, with irreparable damage to the kidneys. "Pet owners in the area should be vigilant when letting their cats out of the house, and should supervise their animals where possible." Anyone found guilty of deliberately poisoning an animal can face penalties of up to six months in prison, a £5,000 fine or both.
JEWISH HERITAGE CENTRE TO BE CREATED IN GLASGOW…. Work will start on Scotland's first Jewish Heritage Centre in May, after the project was awarded lottery funding. It will be housed within Glasgow's Garnethill Synagogue. The National Lottery has given £296,900 to the scheme, and that has triggered more funding from elsewhere. Visitors will be able to learn more about those who escaped the Nazi regime, and came to Scotland to start a new life. The money from the Heritage Lottery Fund unlocks pledged grant support from the Association of Jewish Refugees, the Wolfson Family Charitable Trust and the Federal Republic of Germany, and means the project now has £465,000 to go ahead. The Centre will be housed in Scotland's oldest synagogue, which was opened in 1879, and will include a display on the experience of refugees and survivors from the Nazi regime who found sanctuary in Scotland.
OLDEST WINGER IN TOWN GOING STRONG AT 95…. A Scottish rugby legend is showing the youngsters how it is done at the age of 95. Easton Roy is thought to be the world's oldest rugby player, having pulled his boots back on for his birthday - ten years after hanging them up at 85. The veteran played for Stirling County RFC for 60 years before giving the younger players a chance. But the winger ran out last Friday in a charity match featuring club legends and current players. Easton - dubbed "the oldest winger in town" made his swansong at the Golden Oldies World Cup in 2008. But he recently declared he wanted a run out at the club's Bridgehaugh home to mark his 95th birthday. The retired roofer managed the entire 40 minutes and even left a few opposition players battered and bruised before scoring the decisive try to a round of cheers. Easton said: "It was good fun. I was a bit apprehensive because I've not pulled on my boots for a good while, but I felt alright when I got out on the pitch. "It was great seeing the old boys and reviving the old memories. "I keep myself pretty fit in the gym and I go out for a wee jog but nothing beats playing a game of rugby." Easton, who celebrated after the game by swigging from a bottle of port, added: "I didn't feel the pain until after I sobered up. "I actually felt quite good on Saturday morning, but on Sunday I needed a couple of baths to soften myself off. "But I think we'll have another go next year."
MAN CHARGED AFTER '£380,000 CANNABIS' RAID…. A 22-year-old Vietnamese man has been charged after the recovery of alleged cannabis cultivation worth about £380,000 in Aberdeenshire. Police officers seized the alleged drugs at a rural property in the New Aberdour area on Sunday. Quynh Mai, of Fraserburgh, has appeared at Peterhead Sheriff Court accused of misuse of drugs offences and an attempt to pervert the course of justice. He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.
BORDERS DISTILLERY OPENS TO THE PUBLIC IN HAWICK…. The first whisky distillery in the Borders in more than 180 years has officially opened to the public. The £10m project has seen an old industrial building on Hawick's Commercial Road converted. The Three Stills Company said its Borders Distillery would create up to 19 jobs for the area. Founder John Fordyce said there had been some "very convincing arguments" for looking at the Scottish Borders for the project. "The skilled labour market and textile manufacturing history, particularly in tweed and cashmere, were two big influencing factors, as was ready availability of natural resources and raw materials," he explained. The barley sourced for the distillery is entirely grown in the Borders and operating at full capacity it is estimated the site could produce up to two million litres of pure alcohol. However, it will be a minimum of three years in cask before the first Borders Distillery single malt can legally be made available for sale.
On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,
Our look at Scotland today is of Easton Roy who is thought to be the world's oldest rugby player, having pulled his boots back on for his birthday - ten years after hanging them up at 85.
