No' awa' tae bide awa'
The weather, by common consent, has been amazing; though we didn't dare say so until we saw blue sky on the morning of our third and final day. The forecast was for thundery showers and sunny intervals. The showers obligingly happened overnight, and the days have been perfect for cycling.
For me, today was a mix of the familiar and the new. I've been to the top of the Col du Mollard, but ascended and descended by the other two of the three routes to it. I remembered the high Alpine meadows between Albiez-Montrond and Le Mollard, beautifully held in a bowl of mountains, above the press and rush of the valley below (which contains the motorway and railway line to Turin, as well as quarries, factories and the towns supporting all the villages above).
I was riding with Dr Colin, who only a month ago had come down the road we went up, when he was riding La Marmotte (a big sportive). He swears he remembers none of it, which is what riding on the rivet (of the saddle, i.e. really hard) with several thousand others will do for your cognitive function.
We went down from the Col du Mollard by the route I went up it a year ago, and then up the Col de la Croix de Fer by the way I came down it last year. The 7 km final section up from Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves to the col is pretty brutal, so I developed an interest in landscape photography, to give me the odd break.
Four out of the seven of us took the shorter option today, omitting the Col du Mollard, so they were at the Col de la Croix de Fer before us Challenge riders; and I was the last of those to arrive at the col. There had been talk over dinner last night of lunch at the restaurant at the col, reputed for its omelettes; but the place was thronged, so I opted for an ice-cream, and left. Tim and Sarah, from the Classic group, were also departing; but I left them behind quite quickly, and didn't see anyone else from our group for the rest of the day.
So used was I to going the other way up (or down) roads I went down (or up) last year, I almost went all the way down from the Col de la Croix de Fer to Le Bourg D'Oisans, which would have been a pretty spectacular navigation fail, but my Garmin squawked at me as I shot past the turn for the Col du Glandon. At that point, you're at the col itself, so today's route was the descent, on a road I've never ridden, in either direction. It is 20 km of the most beautiful, and satisfyingly technical, riding, with views of Mont Blanc from near the top. I've put the climb on my list of things to be fit enough to do.
The Challenge route home included a return visit to Les Lacets de Montvernier, this time just as far as Montvernier itself, then along the side of the valley before descending to St-Jean-de-Maurienne. I was pushing along to hold open the option of adding La Toussuire (the 'Day 0' climb) to the end of the day, but by the last of the day's many hairpins, my concentration was going. Remembering the patron saint of cyclists, Notre Dame de Toute Prudence (to whom is dedicated the chapel at the Col de l'Iseran), I opted to leave La Toussuire as another reason to return.
I was first back at the hotel, by quite a margin today. Ben seems to have stayed for an omelette, so even though he flew down the Glandon and beat his own personal best on the Lacets, my margin in the final classement gĆ©nĆ©rale was a stonking 48'14" for the day, and 53'37" overall; with bonus points for prudence. So I get the yellow jersey; Ben gets the Polka Dots for his outstanding climbing and descending; and Angus -- who is only 21 -- gets the White Jersey for best young rider. The final jersey is renamed from Green to Evergreen, and goes to not to a sprinter but to Colin l'Ć¢inĆ© for his inspiring 68-year-old diesel engine.

are you still here?
yeah. so. the best i can tell, by the numbers:
67 laps
13:22:45 elapsed time to 12,000 vertical feet (11:43:22 moving)
92.2mi to 12,000 vertical feet
i did a q&a after the fact. if youāre interested, here it is.
i also did a video thing where i talked a bunch of detailed nonsense. thatās here.Ā
total ride time was slightly longer than above because i had to get back down. if you want to dig in the data on my actual doing of the thing, hereās the ride. itās not especially impressive, and was more about dogged pursuit of a small effort, metered over a long period, than it was about watts or sending. iām not a regular strava user, but i recognize that the kids wonāt be able to understand and that the ride didnāt exist unless i upload it, so: fine.
i canāt imagine youād want to see it, but i did a preview lap of the loop i rode a few days before the attempt. the way i rode it, itās about a 9-minute lap (i was slower than that, at around 10- to 11-minute laps, on the actual ride). the fun bit starts at around 6:00, if you want to skip ahead through the uphill drudgery. youāll miss my commentary, though. hereās the short version.
as iāve mentioned, while this was a terrible circuit for racking up vertical, it was nice to be able to tell myself, āsure, going up this thing x many times is going to be awful, but i get a sweet descent down a flow trail every lap.ā in reality, i was pretty confident i could do the repetitive climbing, as long as i managed food and hydration (which i did - i peed so, so, so many times). i was more concerned about lapses in concentration on the downhill, which, though not terribly technicalā¦ at lap 50-something, i thought maybe things might get a little spicier. on the day, it wasnāt a problem. i started in the dark, the fog was a little tricky for an hour, but then it was fine. traffic on the trail was light and hopefully i wasnāt in anyoneās way coming or going. apologies to the dude on the kona with the dirt jump helmet who came in behind me at mach everything. i was at around 12.5 hours in at that point and wasnāt terribly interested in pushing it any faster, and pulling over/safely avoiding a crash while doing so wasnāt an option, given the state of my union. anyway, everything went more or less according to plan.Ā
all i can say in summary is that 170ā vertical feet* is not a lot of vertical feet for making up a whole lot of vertical feet.
you might be asking: why 12,000 feet of climbing (and descending, come to think of it)?Ā
itās a relatable goal, and i thought it was doable, given the circumstances and the time i had, in a long day. itās also the vertical relief of mt. everest (that mountainās base is at ~17,100 feet on the tibetan side, its summit at 29,029 feet).Ā
itās hopefully apparent, but i want to stress that i am not claiming to have ascended the full sea level to summit height of everest. this was not an āeverestingā attempt. plenty of very talented riders have completed that challenge, including payson mcelveen, who did it at altitude, on freakinā singletrack, which is insane (i was about two weeks in to my preparations when i found out heād done it, and was sad). in truth, of all of the āeverestingā attempts iāve seen, paysonās is the one that i think is the coolest, and hardest. sounds like he filmed it. iām looking forward to seeing it. for the record, if iād done an everest attempt on this circuit, iād have had to do something like 170 laps and it would have taken 2.5-3 times longer than my ride (35-45 hours?), provided i could have completed it (i donāt think i could have). anyway, that is not happening. ever. if youāre up for it, be my guest. itās definitely possible to go faster than i went on this thing. itās just not possible for me and i am super done.
finally, iāll say, in the interest of full disclosure:
if i were to have done this absolutely by the book, iād have done four more laps. the segment iād planned is 170ā² vertical feet. letter of the law for these things, i should have done four more laps (71) than i did (67). instead, i ticked off 12kā on the garmin, watching the ascent numbers, and called it good (i was exactly 170ā shy of the goal prior to my last lap and so so so did not want to do another, and luckily didnāt have to). i found a few more vertical feet at the top of the loop on a number of laps (find my pee spot!) and those add up, over time. undulations in the trail also contributed to the accumulated ascent numbers. to be clear: IāM NOT GOING BACK TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT. EVER. (*and i wonāt have to. see elevation addendum below.)
i accidentally hit pause on the ride on my garmin at some point in the last three hours of this thing, for about 10 seconds. it was terrifying. i managed to hit resume and kept the data flowing. sue me.
i think i failed to hit lap on the garmin a few times (2?). sherlock says itās okay.
*important note on elevation.Ā when i first started planning this project, i scoped the lap and settled in on 170ā² vertical feet as the elevation gain, per lap. at the time i was using a garmin 810, and that was the rough gain it reported on the circuit. i also wasnāt paying terribly close attention. in the interim i upgraded to a garmin 530. the gps tracking on that device is considerably more accurate than the 810 (which is still a great unit). iāve ridden the circuit with the 530 on multiple days, and used it on the day i completed this project. as it turns out, the lap truly is more in the neighborhood of 175-180ā² vertical feet gained, per lap. i hit 177ā² vertical feet on the majority of the laps, and in excess of that (180ā²) on numerous laps... because thatās the best height for peeing, on this track. true story. anyway, after re-doing this math, i feel comfortable saying that i verifiably did the correct number of laps and hit the true elevation goal iād set out for myself. whew.
still not going back. for a long time. probably.
okay, iām very tired. thanks for reading. please do continue to give some thought to helping others in these very difficult times.
be safe, be well. and VOTE.

Cycling the Canal Du Midi
Writing this blog entry from our tent fortress in Toulouse! We have been resting at a campsite and sheltering from the rain; living in a tiny flat in Hull has prepared us well for managing in this confined space. We finished the Canal du Midi cycle route from Sete to Toulouse, the first leg of our travel by bike adventureā¦ this blog entry will try to relay some of our experiences, so many come to mind that it will fail to do the excitement and intensity any justice! We were also joined by my amazing Dad for the first three days of cycling, and Liam and I did the last two on our own.
We chose the route of the Canal du Midi as it made logistical sense having attended a festival near to Sete, the route being flat for ease, and with good train links so my Dad could join us for a section. Wanting it to work out, I did kind of ignore a lot of the warnings online that the route was very badly maintained and difficult/impossible to ride in places. My usual experience dictates that when people whine about routes being hard, it is never as bad as they make out. I did some more research, and there was even a Cicerone Official guidebook. How bad could it be? We decided to give it a go.
Well, I was wrong. The people online were completely correct with their assessment- the track was very difficult to ride for the most part! Liam and I set off on our fully loaded touring bikes with road tyres, and were greeted with easy to medium rated mountain bike routes, including slithers of single track with dicy drop offs into a canal, tree routes, gravel, sand, subsidence where parts of the canal were missing, huge grasses providing resistance to the panniers, no paving on most of the track causing rattles and jerks. Having no suspension and little control over our tanks of bikes, this made things, well, very challenging! My Dad had his mountain bike with proper tyres and suspension and less load, so he fared a little better!
Our bikes, arms, legs and tempers were put through their paces as we experienced a good beating and rattling as we made our way on the route. Liamās front rack and mud guard broke, his bike stand broke, everything got shaken loose, all the nuts and bolts needed tightening.
All that being said, we had an absolutely fantastic time! We found great humour when faced with these adversities. We saw the positives of the experiences as we were able to really test our bikes and my amazing mechanic Dad helped us fix the issues. We will be facing unpaved roads and tracks in many countries we intend to visitā¦ so it provided a great opportunity to see what would happen!
The route itself, was really beautiful and I would highly recommended it for bikepacking on a mountain bike. We travelled through beautiful rural French villages and towns along the waterways, spotting heron and water birds, cycled along the meditterean sea and had a swim, bought local cheese, cherries and strawberries, had coffees in lovely local cafes, explored French towns, saw lots of fascinating locks and shared greetings with holidaymakers on canal boats. The sun mostly shone down, and was glorious. The grasses were long, the smells of spring and summer floating in the air, and the enormous plane trees planted along the banks were glorious and provided some shade.
We worked really well as a team, and had some amazing wild camp spots. The best one, my Dad found, was underneath an aqueduct which supported the Canal! So, not only did we ride along the canal but we slept under it. We found it after the only evening it rained, we were cold and wet, and in need of shelter. The universe provided! In the morning we had a much needed wash by swimming in the river with the fish. Then shared our breakfast with the ants whilst drying out in the sun.
Another fun bivvy was after Liam and Iās first solo dayā¦ we had put in some hard miles and could not find anywhere to bed down. We cycled and cycled until we had nothing left in our legs, and the light faded, so we were forced to just put up camp on the side of the track in full view of anyone passing. However, we counted on no one passing that far our in the rural area whilst it was dark! We eventually managed to get to sleep about 11pm after Liam cooked up a feast! Then, about 1am, I was startled awake by 4 bright lights in my face. A group of four night cyclists whizzed by at high speed, and shouted Bonne Nuit!
We had a lovely time in Carcassonne exploring the medieval city, where a nice French cycle tourer helped my Dad fix Liamās bike. My dad didnāt ask for help, but Bernard was extremely excited by the technical challenge and jumped up when he saw my Dad working on the bike. I was very amused watching them work together with limited shared language - but they functioned in harmony. Bernard offered us some comments on our gear, not all good! Ha ha!
Finally we arrived in Toulouse after a day of cycling on amazing paved track. It was hot, and it took us a while to find the campsite. We learned we do not like cycling in cities even when they have amazing cycle paths. We have enjoyed the city, its beautiful rivers and architecture. However, we also enjoyed the comforts it offersā¦ namely Starbucksā¦. Where we passed an afternoon charging our electronics and learning how to use the Garmin, which will help us navigate.
Liam and I are sometimes a bit haphazard, and owned this amazing piece of kit with no idea how to use it or even what it does. We were absolutely amazed by it, and now have downloaded our onward routes for the next few weeks. Fingers crossed it makes navigation a bit easier. Stay tuned for updates.
Toulouse also provided us with an opportunity to catch up with some of Liamās friends he made whilst couchsurfing in 2016. We went out expecting to be home (tent) by 11pm and away cycling by 7am. How foolish of us. So here we are, nursing hangovers safely back in the tent at 10pm the next day. Weāve spent the day resting and sheltering from the rain because it has not stopped raining really for two days. Unexpected in the South of France!! So, it kind of worked out. We also learnt some more lessons about not riding bikes whilst drunk, not navigating whilst drunk, and not planning epic cycles the day after going out for a beer!
We are making slow progress as we try and get fitter on the bikes and adjust to sleeping wild, cooking every meal outdoors, and living cheap. I have to say, we are in our element. I love sleeping outside, being on the move, shopping for cheap food, having so few possessions and living simply. All you worry about each day is where to sleep, what to eat, and where to go. Every day is full of new experiences and rich with learning, struggle, joy and suffering in equal measure. A coffee in Starbucks or a warm shower is like the ultimate luxury! You appreciate everything that you have. Emotions are felt with intensity. I love this life!
Soā¦ tomorrow we move on. We are aiming to cycle to Switzerland via Foix, Perpignan, Montpelier and Eurovelo route 17 in the next three weeks. It is about 1000km and lots of ascent! So, we will have to see how that goes. Honestly, we have no idea how we will fare. Our bikes are very very heavy and we have a lot of muscle to build! Whilst googling stupid things like can you cycle 1000km in 3 weeks, all I found were posts on forums of people asking if they could do it in 2 days. Soā¦ we will give it a punt. To be continued.
Just wanted to give a massive shoutout to my amazing Dad, who we miss as our third musketeer! Despite being more than both our ages combined he was faster than us, had more energy, more skills and more positivity! He really is an inspiring individual! Thanks so much for coming and all of the laughs we shared. Thanks for fixing our bikes, buying us cherries and coffees, keeping us motivated and cheerful. Thanks for doing the washing up and letting us rest after we were too exhausted to move and you were full of beans š
