Notes on The Bee-Friendly Garden by Kate Frey and Gretchen LeBuhn
Tumblr media
Okay, I love the idea of gardening, but absolutely don't have a place to do it. So I grabbed this the way some people grab travel guides. It's a bit denser than I expected, so it took me longer than normal to get through it.
So first, I'm going to say that my gardening experiences are really from my childhood where I just did what my mom told me, you know? These days, I occasionally buy plants or seeds for my mom, so I thought maybe I could use some of this? Perhaps? And yeah, some of this is heckin' good even for a half-assed garden experience.
The first section of the book is bee facts! So many bee facts! Bee facts I had no clue were even a thing! A+ bee facts, and def the densest part of the book.
The next section is a broad overview of the types of plants that bees like. Generally speaking, native bees like native plants, but there are for sure some other traits to look out for. And some native plants have evolved to attract moths or hummingbirds instead! There's lots of details about how that all breaks down, but it's also easy to skim for whatever specifics fit your needs and vibes.
There's a shorter section with ideas about what kinds of garden layouts are best for bees. This section talks about things like shade and water, as well as how much to mix plant types or have spaces where the bees might nest. And also some thoughts about when and how to trim your plants. That's a really thoughtful section I hadn't considered.
The last section is lists by region with plants that particularly thrive and appeal to the bees of the region. It's a great quick reference for if you want to just make sure you've gotten a few plants mixed into your garden that will really attract bees.
So overall? I think the book is a great resource for anyone who really wants to think about bees and other pollinators in their garden, and you can use the info to go all in, or to just make a few changes. As with any resource about gardening, it's a good idea to do a little further research with local plant nurseries or gardening society. But yeah, if I had space to garden at all, I'd be applying some of the wonderful knowledge in this book for sure.
Oh, and there are some very lovely pictures through out. Because what's a gardening book without pictures of pretty plants?
