River Barrel Distributing continues to grow its list of Pacific Northwest breweries with the addition of Triceratops Brewing Company and Sig Brewing Company. Both are family-run breweries based in Washington. 

Triceratops Brewing was begun by partners Rob and Kelly Horn. Originally from Flemington, NJ, the Horns moved to Olympia, WA and opened their own brewery in August 2014 after years of home brewing. Triceratops’ operations began in the family’s garage and with the last name Horn, the brewery name was an easy choice. Three years later, the Horns opened a tasting room in Tumwater and have had a steady flow of great customers, good friends, and craft beer lovers. 

“We’re very happy to add Triceratops to our list,” says River Barrel Distributing Sales Manager Joe Cohen. “Rob and Kelly brew clean, classic styles that appeal to a wide market of beer drinkers.” 

To date, Triceratops Brewing has earned four medals at the Washington Beer Awards for their Hawthorne Coffee Milk Stout, Pennsyltucky Vienna-style Lager, Revival Coffee and Motors Coffee Milk Stout, and Bohemian Raspberry Golden Ale. 

Three varieties Cohen is looking forward to sharing with the Western Washington area are: 

Collin James Irish Red Ale - Low in alcohol and bitterness, this Irish Red Ale is a well-balanced people pleaser. Lightly hopped with the mild, earthy, and somewhat woody Fuggle variety, this beer entices the nose with a rich, toffee-like aroma. Meanwhile, notes of plum and raisin play with a slightly bready and nutty flavor provided by Irish ale malt and a touch of roasted barley. 

Liquid Swords IPA - We launched our popular rotating IPA series back in 2016, and by drawing on the wide variety of expressive hop varieties available to brewers, haven’t made the same beer since. Hazy or bright, fruity or piney, no two Chambers are alike, and they never last long. 

Pennsyltucky Vienna-Style Lager - This smooth, Vienna-style lager is inspired by the brewing traditions of Central Pennsylvania. Caramunich malt gives this classic style a nice, roasty flavor while the Cluster hops provide a little bite and a touch of earthy bitterness. 

About 30 miles NE of Triceratops’ taproom is Sig Brewing Company. Begun in 2020, the family-owned location in Tacoma’s Historic Brewing District offers beers of nearly every style as well as a full menu of brick oven pizza.

We were fortunate enough to hire a talented head brewer in Jeff Stokes and opened our doors in the spring of 2020. A relentless string of powerful storms has soaked much of South Florida this week, and Friday's forecast predicts more rain will continue to drench the state. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties.

Summary: Maki drives Nico to a family breakfast, then has a showdown with an inquisitive Nozomi.

Inquisitions

Nico was surprised. This morning, Maki, still hot, had dressed down. A silk bomber jacket, jeans, a lavendar polo shirt, and a black ball cap, a small star embrodiered on the front. The polo shirt and jeans clung to killer curves and Maki's yawning grimace was the cutest thing Nico had ever seen so Nico would not be complaining. Nico was surprised not to see company branding. But maybe Nico was paying for discretion.

"Good morning." Maki muttered, holding the door for Nico.

Nico smiled, "Nico Nico Ni has the best mornings."

A nod. Another yawn.

"Does Maki need a nap? Nico can drive."

Maki snorted. "Your legs are short. I'd hate to adjust my seat, it'll never return to the right place."

"Rude." Nico nudged Maki on the shoulder, then slid into the car. "Nico needs you until the afternoon."

"That's fine." Maki closed Nico's door. "I've arranged to be your exclusive driver, if that suits you."

"Nico doesn't mind. Is Nico paying extra?" Nico hummed, regretting that Maki had no way to see the sexy smirk Nico was sending her way.

"Do you have a headache?" Maki had turned around, "You look like you're in pain."

"Nico is fine." Now Nico was feeling tired.

"Have you had breakfast? I picked up some donuts." Maki lifted a bag. "And where is your destination?"

Maki figured she would be driving Nico to a television appearance, an interview, or a meeting with label executives.

"Donuts are not breakfast. Nico will show you breakfast. That's where we're headed."

Nico gave Maki an address, Ridgewood, NJ.

"A breakfast meeting?"

"The number one breakfast chef in the universe is going to be demonstrating her techniques. Maki will be impressed."

"Um, I'm not…it's not part of the job…I can't…"

"Let Nico worry about that."

"Sure." Maki yawned, focusing on the road, letting whatever Nico had said slip away.

It was never too early for traffic, but most was headed into the city so Maki made good time. Although the farther they went into Ridgewood, the more she wondered about the purpose of Nico's trip. Nico was in the back seat, absorbed in her phone so Maki drove in silence. When she was about to turn the final corner in a completely residential neighborhood, Nico put away her phone.

"Let Nico out, Nico will hit the code for the garage, pull in, and park."

Maki wondered if Nico had a breakfast date.

"I'll just come back when you need the car."

"So you can go to a restaurant and eat food someone spent as little time as possible on? Don't insult Nico's hospitality."

"But I wouldn't want to intrude on your…" Maki could feel herself flushing.

Nico cackled, "Does Ms. Maki think Nico has an early morning rendezvous with a secret lover?"

"Uh…not really…I…um…"

"Don't start rumors." Nico wagged a finger. "Stop muttering and just pull into the Yazawa Family garage when Nico opens it. Nico bought this house for her mom and siblings at the start of the pandemic after not taking a single break during seven years of touring, five albums, and twelve Grammys." Nico opened her own door, "Nico also made some savvy investments, including this and Katherine Hepburn's townhouse."

Katherine Hepburn's townhouse? Maki filed that for a future question.

The car door shut, Nico hopped to the garage, Maki pulled in, parked, stepped out and breathed in the cool air of the tree bordered property. Practically secluded. Nico opened the front door and waved Maki in.

"C'mon. Nico's tired of hearing your stomach rumble."

"um."

"Yum. Nico's the best cook you'll ever meet." Nico stepped into the house and shouted, jumping into a pose, gesturing broadly, "Nico Nico Ni! Where are Nico's biggest fans?"

A brown haired bullet train wrapped Nico up in a hug, "Sis!!! Your concert film red carpet pics are everywhere."

"Of course they are." A taller Nico? walked up to her sister. "Nico always maximizes her social media opportunities."

"And thank you Team Yazawa for cheering and posting and boosting. Nico loves you." Nico had both girls in a tight hug.

"Nico." A gravelly voice drew Maki's attention. Eyes as red as Nico's watched them all from over a counter.

"Cotoro! Come meet Maki."

"Maki." Same monotone gravelly voice, eyes staring intently.

"Hi." Maki waved, suddenly awkward and overwhelmed.

"Is this your new girlfriend, Sis?" The hugger asked, watching Maki as Maki retreated toward the door.

"No. This is Maki, Nico's exclusive driver."

The calmer, taller sister walked a circle around Maki, frowning, "No uniform?"

"You should have seen her last night." Nico winked at Maki.

Maki wanted the car directly outside the door so she could speed away from all this scrutiny.

"Um…"

"Today, we are icognNico, Cocoro."

Cocoro nodded, "Makes sense."

An older, more mature voice caught everyone's attention, as a taller woman, obviously the mother of all the gang, entered the scene. "Let Nico and her friend come inside."

Two "Yes, Mama" and a grunt. The scrum split and Maki followed Nico into a large family room, sectional sofa centered in front of a fireplace inset with marble tiles, flanked by light wood on either side.

"Welcome to the Yazawa family home." Nico steered Maki into the room with a hand on her arm.

Nico's mother stepped up to Maki, hand extended. A firm handshake.

"So you're driving Nico around?"

Maki felt like she should remove the ball cap in respect but suspected Nico might laugh at her if she did.

"Yes, ma'am, Mrs. Yazawa."

"I expect you to follow all the relevant laws and keep my baby safe."

"Mama!" Nico's voice cracked with indignation.

"Of course."

"Good. Maki was it? Do you have a last name? What company do you drive for?"

Maki flinched but before she could reply Nico stepped up.

"Mama, Eli set this up. You know how thorough Eli is."

Maki's ball cap was suddenly in her hand, being twisted, as she reached for a curl of hair with the other hand. Mrs. Yazawa raised an eyebrow. Maki concentrated on thinking responsible, non sketchy thoughts, reviewing traffic regulations, picturing breakfast cereals.

Nico shook her head at both of them and moved on, "Who wants Nico's signature omelets?"

Yeses were shouted. Maki winced at the noise. She wondered if there was any coffee. Nico's mother was still watching her. Maki shoved the cap back on her head and waited for Nico's next command.

"Maki, play MarioKart with Cotoro and show Mama what a good driver you are. You play MarioKart, right?"

Maki nodded. Her tournaments with Rin were legendary battles.

"Good. Nico will call you when breakfast is ready. Where's my apron?" Nico hesitated, "Any allergies?"

"No." Maki smiled, "I love tomatoes."

"Okay, hot driver loves tomatoes, good thing we're in Jersey and Mama stocked up."

Nico's mother had switched the scrutiny to her daughter but Nico was too happy chattering with her sisters to notice.

Relieved, Maki fell back into the couch as Cotoro set up the game. He handed her a controller with all the gravity of the Lady Of The Lake granting the use of Excalibur. A good sign. Maki preferred serious competition.

Maki had been in multiple Michelin star restaurants all over Europe and America, but this was the best breakfast she had ever had melt into her tastebuds. A perfect mix of firmly soft eggs, barely sauteed summer tomatoes, and just the right shake of salt and pepper. That and a slice of crispy crusty barely brushed by heat garlic toast made for a mix of taste and texture that had Maki dreaming of future breakfasts. While the Yazawa family caught up on the latest in each other's lives, Maki took her coffee outside, sitting by the pool, sipping and letting her mind blank.

"There you are. Nico thought you drove off." Nico rushed out of the house, surprisingly followed by none of her family. "Cotaro really enjoyed running you off the road so many times."

"Every box gave him a blue shell. Totally unfair." But Maki knew her eyes were twinkling and Nico just settled into the seat next to her.

"How's the coffee?"

"Not as good as the eggs on garlic toast, which is maybe the best thing I have ever eaten."

Maki's enthusiasm silenced Nico. Then Maki yawned.

"Do most of your clients work nights?"

Maki inhaled instead of swallowing, coughing.

Nico kept staring. Maki put the coffee mug down, stretched her fingers, and got lost in the muddle of ideas her brain had for diverting the conversation.

Nico leaned forward, sunglasses sliding down her nose. "C'mon, breathe for Nico. Can't have chauffeur chokes on coffee and falls into Idol's pool hit TWIG. Nico needs the movie buzz to build first."

Maki waved a hand, nodded, inhaled air instead of liquid. "Not used to quizzes this early."

"Nico is just curious. But Nico approves of your discretion."

Maki's shoulders sagged. Saved from more lying. "What's next on your agenda?"

"Good question, my dainty driver."

"Hey, I'm not…"

Nico shook her head, "Can't handle your coffee. Who knows what tequila'd do to you."

"I handle my tequila fine."

"You don't seem like a Ms. Margarita."

Maki was getting exasperated with Nico's nosiness. "Are you buying?"

Nico frowned at Maki's spicy tone. "Alcohol and cars don't mix. Nico knows that."

"Good."

Maki wanted more coffee. Or to stalk off. Or to dive into the pool and swim 10 laps. But instead she had to sit there, while Nico stared at her, openly confused and too curious. What had Maki gotten herself into?

Wind rustled tree leaves. A squirrel ran up to the pool, then sprinted towards the street. Maki could hear the water lapping against the walls.

"Nico has a recording session scheduled, then a meeting with Eli. Eli will drop me off after. So you're free after we head to the studio."

Maki exhaled. That gave her some time to think. How to explain to Nico that she got caught up in Nico's stalker worry…Nico's stalker worry…

"Have you had any more texts?"

"Nico gets texts all the time…Nico is Dr. Pepper popular."

"Threatening texts."

"Oh. No. Nico is going to talk to Eli about that. Maki doesn't have to worry. It will be safe to drive Nico."

"That's not what I'm worried about."

Nico blinked. "Nico has security, when needed. Maki doesn't have to worry. But you're sweet."

Nico bopped nearer, air kissing Maki's cheek, startling Maki who shoved away from the table.

"Maki swerves a lot."

"I do not. No swerving."

Nico raised both hands. "If the dainty and delicate driver says so."

Maki grunted. Nico laughed.

"We're leaving in a half an hour. Nico made muffins. Take some home."

Maki dropped Nico off at the recording studio her producer worked out of, then shifted into autopilot, no thinking, just drive mode. Or maybe clothes shopping. Yes. Maki needed a new outfit. That always helped with thinking. She wondered what her Nordstrom's shopper would recommend.

Maki opened the door to her house, pausing to appreciate the view of the park across the street. It was a nice little neighborhood in Brooklyn, a modest brownstone, nothing like her parent's sprawling mansion and Connecticut acres. Maki couldn't help smiling. Seeing Nico with her family had been…pleasant. Just low key, nice…well, Maki giggled at her own thoughts, the Yazawas seemed to be high key, high energy, and exhausting but in a caring, thoughtful way. When Maki went outside for alone time no one had questioned her or broken into her privacy. And just turning off her anxieties and to do lists to race Cotaro had been a relief. She was still dreading her conversation with Nozomi about the ditched gallery opening. Thinking of her manager, Maki realized she could smell Nozomi's perfume in the air, a cloying blackberry, cognac, and incense mix.

"MAKI!"

Why was Nozomi in her house?

"I'm in your bedroom."

Maki blinked. That was a disaster. She dropped her bags in the kitchen and hurried upstairs, to see Nozomi sprawled out on her bed, skimming through a photography book, a stack next to her, right in reach.

"I didn't realize your photobook collection was so thorough."

"Get off my bed."Maki snapped. Being clear about boundaries was the only way to survive Nozomi. "How are you in my house?"

"Rin owed me a favor so I took your spare key." Nozomi rolled over, grinning up at Maki, "Are the models you bring home intimidated by the literal wall of books in your bedroom? Or do you just look at the sexy pictures together?"

Maki was changing the locks and burning every scented candle she had as soon as she pried Nozomi out of her house.

"What are you reading?" Maki ripped the book away. Nobuyashi Araki. His own book: Araki by Araki.

"I saw the kinbaku prints in your studio. They're not Araki's, are they?"

"No. Suki Da. I'm researching."

"Bondage? Ropes?" Nozomi had rolled over again, chin in hands, eyes alight with malicious mischief.

"Geometry."

"If you're going to do a kinky series, you have to give your manager advance notice so I can audition the models properly." Nozomi purred.

"You will have nothing to do with that choice." Maki's riposte was mild. This was just everday back and forth teasing for her sybaritic manager. How the bawdy Nozomi Tojo had gotten to be such solid friends with the prudish genius Umi Sonoda and the perpetually in motion innocent Rin Hoshizora puzzled Maki. But Nozomi was a good manager, charismatic and open to conversations in many ways that Maki was closed off. Nozomi had landed Maki her first gallery show, presenting her photos anonymously to convince Maki that Nozomi hadn't been leveraging the Nishikino name and fortune.

Nozomi sat up, pulled the book back from Maki, opened to a page with a woman in a kimono hanging from carefully knotted and arranged ropes, "So what do you think of when you see this?"

Maki met Nozomi's eyes, surprising her manager by the lack of embarrassment. "My catamaran."

"I suppose I do get a sailing feel. Especially with the loose fabric. Very naughty, very yachty. "

Maki didn't laugh.

Nozomi turned the book to the side, noticing more details, "You see things so differently. Do you want to know what I feel when I look at these?" Green eyes taunted.

"No." Maki had learned not to have these conversations linger. Nozomi was more than willing to answer Maki's occasional questions about allosexual…urges, but there was always too much overshare.

"Are you going to tie up Nico Ni in your back seat?"

Maki recoiled, her back against the bookshelves, startled, feeling the blood drain from her face as shakiness took over. How did Nozomi know? Did she have her car bugged?

"I checked the security footage outside the gallery to see if you'd showed up at all. And then I saw you drive off with New York's hottest celebrity." Nozomi tilted her head, "Did you even know who she was?"

"I need coffee for this." Maki stomped down the stairs, debating whether to make coffee or make Nozomi have this conversation elsewhere. But that might lead to eavesdroppers and Nozomi had already brought Nico up. Nico's name would catch ears. Home brew it was.

"So Nico Ni just barrels into your car, assumes your her driver, and you never bother to tell her who you really are."

Maki nodded, still holding her mug in front of her face.

"There's shy, Maki, but you're ridiculous. You're hot, babe, and rich, and did I mention hot and you decide rather than introduce yourself you'll pretend to be a chauffeur?

"Stop saying hot. And babe."

"I bet you…" Nozomi paused, "Two years salary of doubled salary that's the first thing Nico Ni thought when she saw you."

"Really?" Maki put the mug down, to twirl a curl.

"Oh, Ms. Modesty comes out now. Of course. It's the first thing everyone thinks."

Maki raised an eyebrow, "Everyone?"

"Ah, playing that ace." Nozomi shook her head, frowning."Asexuals aren't blind. Culturally and aesthetically speaking you tick off all the hotness boxes, so yes, even if someone was aspec, like you, they would still think "hot"." Nozomi paused, for emphasis. "You do."

"Shut up." Maki slapped her mug.

"Maki, sweetie, you are very confident in your appearance. The mirror is your bestie. I sold your self portrait series. I know exactly how much you impress yourself."

Maki was starting to lose her temper. Nozomi was charging into all of her "do not discuss" zones.

"You're fired. And if you don't change the subject immediately, I'll see if I can sell the police on breaking and entering."

Nozomi raised her mug, doubling down on smug. "You have offered me food, drink and conversation, babe. No sale on me crime-ing." She bit into a muffin. "Where'd you get these, they're amazing?"

Maki sipped, silent, sorry she'd dropped Nico's gift muffins so openly on the table.

"So, Nico Ni…did you know who she was?"

Maki shrugged. "I'd heard the name."

"What's she like in person?"

"Fireworks."

After a moment of silence, Maki stood, reaching to refill her mug.

Nozomi was very good at reading people. Except Maki. With Maki her guesses were wilder, broader, less likely to pop the target balloon and drop information. While Maki was willing to talk, her patience for questioning was limited. So Nozomi had to line up her shots like she was putting the 8 ball in a middle pocket off two bumpers.

"What's the plan?"

Maki turned around, leaning back against the counter. "Drive?"

"Oh my god, you are a loser. Just tell her. It was her mistake, picking your car. It's not like you're going to do it again."

Maki wrapped an arm around her torso, biting her lip. Nozomi recognized Maki's mood switch to furtive. Was this what parenting teenagers was like? Casual sex forever then.

"What did you do, Maki?"

"it doesn't matter; I'll fix it." Having declared that and closed the subject, Maki relaxed, "Did you say Umi wanted to talk to me?"

Now Nozomi was giving off a furtive air, "Before we finish our Nico Ni talk, have you told Rin about this?"

"No. No time. Why?"

Nozomi giggled. "You don't want to know."

Maki sighed, "Probably not. Is it going to bite me?"

"Maybe." Nozomi actually sounded serious.

"Are you going to tell me?"

"No."

"I'm tired, Nozomi. Go home. I'll make dinner reservations and text Umi."

"Do you want my advice, Maki?"

Maki considered, then with a sly grin she held out her hand, "No. I want my key."

"You love me." Nozomi dropped it in Maki's palm.

"Loathe, you did say loathe?" Maki's grin brightened.

"I'll book you some stand up comedy gigs."

"Good bye, Nozomi."

Nozomi blew air kisses as she flounced toward the door. Maki dodged them all.

I have never seen such a weird looking house like this 1988 whatchamacallit in Alloway, New Jersey. It has 2bds, 2ba, $350K. And, if you think the outside is odd, wait'll you see inside.

The front door has a stained glass horse window and an open foyer sort of space.

Somehow it doesn't look finished.

On the 1st fl., there's a living room area in this corner, with a tile wood burning stove.

It's very open, like one giant room.

The dining area is beside the kitchen.

This part of the space has a linoleum floor.

The kitchen has the popular inexpensive 60s laminate cabinets.

This area is sort of a home office.

And, it looks like one of the baths is a 1/2 bath.

I thought that there were 2 floors, but it looks like it goes up to a 3rd.

This would be the primary bedroom.

And, the 2nd bedroom.

Bath #2.

The unfinished 3rd level has potential. It even has doors to the terrace.

This is cute- the uppermost floor looks like a cupola.

NJ/NY Hockey Rink Scouting Report

This is my guide for photographers on hockey rinks I've worked as a photographer. My hope is that this will give you an idea of what to expect if you shoot at one of these rinks. Please feel free to add any information you think might be helpful, as well as add more rinks. I don't intend for this to be negative about any of these facilities; it's just meant to give a bit of a scouting report so you know what to expect if you're bringing your camera to any of them. None of these rinks come with photographer openings in the corners unless otherwise noted. Comments welcome!

Bridgewater Sports Arena, Bridgewater, N.J. - I've only shot in one of the two rinks here and only once. That rink was recently updated, and although I was at first taken aback by the yellow lighting, it is uniform and easy to adjust for in post. (I didn't dare try to do it in camera on that visit.) The glass was clean and seemed new when I was there (January 2024). Spectators and photographers are limited to about half the rink, but that includes most of both ends. There is also a balcony for spectators that may give an interesting perspective, but I didn't get a chance to try it. (There was a good crowd there that night.)

Clary Anderson, Montclair, N.J. - One of the trickiest rinks to photograph in because the overhead lighting creates spotlight effects on the ice and white balance settings are tough. The best bet for clean glass is in the corner on the side of the benches, near the exit door. Photographers can move freely around the entire rink, though, as noted, there are limited areas with clean glass. Metal bleachers along one side of the rink. No admission charge for games.

Codey, West Orange, N.J. - This was a practice facility for the Devils and the main rink is what you'd expect for a professional hockey team. The lighting is close to uniform, with some minor variations. Most of the glass is clean, aside from the predictable marks behind both goals. The ice is surrounded by cushioned seating, which of course is mostly empty except for some season-ending tournaments. The lighting in the secondary rink is a little less uniform but still good. Ditto with the glass. Bleachers are on one side of the ice, opposite the benches and the background on the far end of the rink includes several doorsways that are worth keeping in mind while photographing. Photographers can anywhere around the larger rink. On the smaller rink, they sometimes block off the area in front of the Zamboni garage, but that only cuts out a smaller portion for shooting. Modest admission charge, unless you are affiliated with one of the teams or the media.

Ice House, Hackensack, N.J. - The complaint about the Ice House is always the parking, but they've added space at a new garage across the street, which was a huge help. The fee is nominal. There are three rinks here, but one is primarily if not entirely used for public skating and figure skating. The other two rinks are a little on the dark side, but within reasonable ISO range. Both rinks open to glass on one end, which is manageable and can provide a different look in photos. You can move entirely around the middle rink. I have not often shot on the third rink and frankly can't remember if there are restrictions there but will update this the next time I go. One important note: Both rinks are very cold, so come prepared for that. Metal bleachers both inside the rink along the side opposite the benches and outside the glassed windows on one end. Modest admission charge, unless you are affiliated with one of the teams or the media.

Ice Vault, Wayne, N.J. - Three rinks, all with reasonable lighting and glass. Most games are played in rinks two and three and there is access to the glass all the way around. Modest admission charge, unless you are affiliated with one of the teams or the media.

Montclair State University, Montclair, N.J. - Two rinks here, both with reasonable lighting and glass. Access to about half of both rinks, but only one end of each. Palisades Center Rink, West Nyack, N.Y. - An unusual spot for a rink: In the upper levels of a mall. It's often used for recreational skating and sometimes games are played with a lot of people around the rink either waiting for public skating or just finishing. I haven't been there in a few years. Back then, the glass was tricky as was the lighting and the people who gathered around the rink made it a little difficult to move around too.

Sport-O-Rama, Monsey, N.Y. - This rink is perpetually denying rumors of its imminent close. It's an older facility and I seem to be in the minority in liking that about the place. It has two rinks, the larger of which is most often used for high school games. It has a plastic(?) curtain that hangs in front of the fairly large bleachers, which can make for some cool lighting in photos. You can get around about three-quarters of the rink, though the side opposite the benches is tough to shoot from because it's an alleyway below the stands. If you know the right people, you might be able to get into the crow's nest above the two benches. I've been up there a couple of times and it's a different perspective, but i only stay for the first period because I don't want to have all my photos from that angle the lighting at the big rink is average and the glass is a little below average for a photographer. Woodbridge Community Center, Woodbridge, N.J. - There are two rinks located across from each other on Main Street: The Community Center rink and The Club at Woodbridge. Both have good lighting and clean glass.
