A Short Timeline of Automated Garage Doors
Nowadays, automation is part of our everyday lives. Home automatic control may range from lighting, heating, and air conditioning to appliances and doors. The ability to control the things around the house with the push of a button, and literally have them at our fingertips, improves our comfort, safety and convenience.
Tumblr media
Not all houses enjoy the same level of automation, but these days most homeowners prefer automatic doors when it comes to their garage. However, when were automatic garage doors introduced, and how did they become popular? Here's a short timeline of automatic garage doors and how they've gotten to become so popular.
1926: The Electric Door Opener
Garage doors were opened manually until the introduction of the electric door opener. It was invented less than a century ago, in 1926, by C. G. Johnson. However, it was only after WW II that they became known on the residential market, after a company from Chicago manufactured an opener, which lifted garage doors with the help of a keypad or a switch.
How the Garage Door Opener Works
The considerable weight of the garage door is not lifted by the door opener itself, as you might be tempted to think. There are two other major components, which are responsible for lifting the door. These are the torsion springs and the cables mounted on the door. The role of the opener is to allow you to control how much you want to lift or lower the door and the force exerted by it.
Typically, an electric garage opener includes a power unit, which provides electricity to a motor. When the motor is on, a trolley attached to an arm is set in motion along a track, making the door open or close. In case of power failure, the opener is turned off, and you can operate the door manually. The motor is controlled remotely with the help of a remote control or button mounted in the wall.
1956: Roller Doors
Also called roll up or rolling doors, they were first introduced in 1956, by the Australian manufacturer B& D. They became popular quickly and were adopted worldwide.
Rolling doors work on the same principle as a window roller shutter. This means they are lifted and lowered vertically, with the roll being stored in a space above the door.
1960s: Sectional Doors
Sectional doors were first designed in the 1960s, but started to gain popularity only in the 1970s. They are called 'sectional' because they are typically made of several panels or sections.
Sectional doors also open and close vertically, but unlike roller doors, they require space inside the garage where the tracks are installed. They are considered to be more secure than roller doors. Because you don't need additional space to open the door, you can stop the car close to it before actually opening it. Panels are connected individually to door tracks, which makes sliding easier, as compared to single panel doors.
Choosing between a roller and sectional door depends on your particular needs and budget. If you need help with your decision-making, consult a garage door expert to be sure you purchase what's best for you.

However, the SDI Sectional High-Performance Doors combines the best of both door systems. As a result, they are ideal for food processing, automotive, light manufacturing, transit and postal depots, and airports.

Very rigid, heavy duty construction
Energy saving

BENEFITS
Sectional High-Performance doors are used most often in commercial and industrial applications.  The main advantage of these doors is that they can be quickly opened and closed while insulated and provide energy efficiency in the same way as regular sectional doors offer. Moreover, the following are the other benefits that High-Performance Doors provide.
AIRLOCK SITUATIONS
Firstly, High-Performance Doors can help to create an airlock situation. Further, it is a necessity in the food and beverage industries. Moreover, in such sectors, it is essential to have a good grasp of controlled hygiene. As a result, businesses can safely prepare beverages and food for consumption. Also, these types of doors shut quickly. It helps companies to create that airlock situation better. Plus, this is necessary to maintain food standards. Finally, this can prevent any contaminants from entering this production facility and prevent any potential contamination.
STERILE ENVIRONMENT
Secondly, there are a lot of different businesses that require sterile environments. Also, these doors will limit the air in and out of the facility because the door will not be open as long as a regular overhead door.
SAFER WORK ENVIRONMENTS
Many various industries deal with different types of dangerous chemicals and even other hazardous machinery. Moreover, high-Performance Doors help separate some of these hazards from the employees who are not working in that area. Also, by having these overhead door safety features, the employer can effectively shut off both internal and external sections of the worksite quickly to reduce the risk of harm.

Going Forward From COVID-19
The Road Ahead:  After COVID-19 Five weeks in to a pandemic, and the amount we have learned and changed thus far is enough to fill volumes. We have learned about how the human animal reacts when confronted with the very real fear of being locked up for weeks. We have seen shoppers go crazy over basic items the likes of which were taken for granted the week before this all happened. We have seen people struggle with boredom and ennui, to the point of gathering at the playground anyway for an impromptu game of hoops, or the sudden urge to stroll the aisles of Lowe’s just to get out. We have tried to shelter-in-place, but it’s tough. We’ve seen 16 million people (so far) furloughed from jobs. We have started to wonder how many of those jobs will come back once the curtain of disease is lifted. We wonder how many abandoned restaurants and retail shops will litter the landscape down the road. If we are among the lucky, we have worked from home, having realized the offices in which we once congregated are luxury and probably not all that necessary. We have started pondering if there will be school and university this fall like we once knew it, or whether all academic institutions will be virtual. We have taught from home, we have studied from home. We have Zoomed like a boss, held office hours in our pajamas, and typed profound lectures and essays for our students. Like this one. We have cooked with reckless abandon, and more than we did in the previous five years combined. We have baked bread and added the word “artisanal” to our vocabulary. We now know more ways to cook beans than we ever thought imaginable. We have cauliflowered, Brussels sprouted, and squashed to the point that everyone is at least half-vegan now. We have gloved, masked, and covered to the point that no one recognizes us in public. We can visualize six feet now, we know that we shouldn’t reach in over someone else’s shoulder (well, most of us), and we are aware that we should give way on the bike and hike path so we can all safely pass without inhaling another person’s exhaust. We have found the end of Netflix, cleaned out the garage and basement, organized old photos, and alphabetized our closets. We’ve mowed, mulched, and planted (even if we did violate shelter-in-place orders to go to Lowe’s). We’ve clicked “Add To Cart” to the point of getting a blister on our right index finger. We’ve got enough empty boxes around the house now to start a small shipping company. I could wax poetically for many more paragraphs, but suffice it to say that this is only the beginning. Sure, someday the virus will have run its course and we will be free to carry on. But we will emerge into a very different world once more, one unlike we are experiencing right now mid-pandemic, but also unlike the one we left behind in February. If you’ll pardon me while I slip on my crystal ball gazers, here’s what I see in that brave new world post-COVID, and if you look at these through the correct lens, you will see a wellspring of opportunities for savvy businesspersons. What We Will See All buildings will be reimagined so that people can come and ago with little or no physical contact. We’re all going to be germaphobes anyway, so now is the time to start preparing. Entry ways will have optical sensors to automatically open and close doors, or, at minimum, doors will have handles that can be in such a way that does not require people to use their hands. Public restrooms do not need doors at all; instead, they can be designed or reconfigured to have L-shaped doorless entries. This does not solve the problem of doors on the stalls, but it is a move in the right direction. Beverage coolers and freezers will have automated doors as well. The same goes for office doors; there’s no reason we can’t use retina scanners or ID cards that can be scanned or tapped. Companies able to ramp up to this new reality will do well in the future. And don’t get me started on mass transit and airplanes. Those are going to be tough, but precautions can be taken, even if it means having crews disinfect everything on a regular basis. In addition to soft drink and candy machines, as well as cologne and condoms in public restrooms, we will see vending machines for gloves, masks, hand sanitizers, and other disinfectants. While supplies of these will hopefully be better in the future, it is inevitable that people will be caught out in public without one or more of these new survival essentials. Having them available, and, most importantly, knowing that these machines are ubiquitous, will ease fears wherever we may roam. This change does not require any advances in technology, other than machines that do not require any touching, especially if people have a special tool with them at all times for when they have to revert to old-school. Oh, and the mass transit and airplanes I mentioned a minute ago would be well-served by these machines at train and bus stations, as well as airports. Which brings up devices like the CleanKey, being promoted heavily on Facebook and Instagram right now. It is a handy little tool that attaches to your keyring, and functions either as a door puller, or like an iPad stylus to push buttons or sign names. Until contactless payment systems are installed, products like this will serve as an effective bridge.
Tumblr media
Better yet, though, would be the proliferation of stores like Amazon Go, the one currently still in west coast prototype that allows people to enter, check-in to an app, and then shop without ever having to touch a thing other than the products they are adding to their basket. Cutting out the payment gateway, whether it be with a clerk or a self-check, will cut down on virus vectors. But until then, though, we will see more stores with self-check options. Yes, I know this means the elimination of many cashier jobs, but who wants to be a cashier these days anyway? Yes, the pay has historically been among the highest in the store, but you are exposed to hundreds of people and their germs every day. Self-check, along with the CleanKey, allows us to take care of ourselves and once again cut down on contacts. Speaking of stores, once the pandemic is over, I surely hope that everyone offering online ordering and curbside pickup has perfected this process. It’s a great idea to order online and pick up the order later, but there has gotten to be such long wait times, as in multiple days, that it is hardly worth it anymore. I am certain that people would happily allow for the potential germs of the order picker in lieu of having to share space and oxygen with dozens or even hundreds of other shoppers. Efforts will no doubt be made to get turnaround times back to a couple of hours instead of early next week. Education will forever be changed. While we in the College of Business have been teaching online since 1997, the same cannot be said of other parts of my university, and certainly at many other schools. Professors and Instructors will have to rethink everything in the future, including how quickly a class could be flipped to online should the need arise. Furthermore, the entire K-12 curriculum will change, since that environment seldom if ever involved online teaching. While the use of Zoom for class meetings is a laudable short-term adaptation, everyone will have to consider how to make everything asynchronous, just as the online pioneers did from Day 1. It defeats the purpose of being online if you have to be somewhere at 11:00am every Monday and Wednesday, even if that was the original class meeting time slot. The pandemic has thrown everyone’s worlds upside-down, and that 11:00 reference point may no longer be viable. Manufacturers and their supply chains will work better in the future to try to avert shortages in the event of panic buying. While it has been widely reported that toilet paper manufacturers have long been running 24/7 at full capacity, that left zero room for any shift in the demand curve. While it is laudable to not have any unused capacity, it is just as unlaudable to be caught unable to respond. The ability to produce and distribute more toilet paper suddenly became as complicated as the Titanic trying to avoid an iceberg, and it shouldn’t be. Shifting gears between consumer and commercial production must be easier in the future. Similarly, supply chains for agricultural crops must be able to turn on a dime. The state of Florida is now reporting massive amounts of vegetables that are either being plowed under or allowed to rot, all because commercial contracts dried up. While there are indeed big differences between foodservice and institutional users on the one hand, and supermarkets on the other, once again rigid thinking has made it impossible for growers and distributors to change gears quickly. Since we’re talking about food, buffets have got to go. They are a pandemic waiting to happen. Think about how careless people have been in the past, at everything from Golden Corral to massive Las Vegas casino buffets. In fact, restaurants in general will have to rethink everything, from sit-down dining to takeaway and drive-through. Everything from filthy-dirty menus to tables wiped with the same nasty rag the bus boy used yesterday needs to be revisited. Gloves and masks for everyone, regardless of whether they work as well we would hope, because they at least instill a little confidence in customers. Every kind of event will have to work through the reality of a pandemically-aware population. From churches to concerts, sports arenas, bars, and anything else that attracts large numbers of people, heightened attention must be paid to allowing participation without putting everyone in peril. It’s going to be tough. I think back to all of the concerts I have attended, from the mosh pits of the 1970s to more sedate seating in my later years, there’s still a lot of humanity all sharing the same space. I will think twice before I go to church or another concert again. New home construction would be wise to include expanded pantries so that people can stockpile their pandemic stash. My 1980-ish house may have a lot of cabinets, but could sure use a walk-in pantry. We will all need a place to inventory toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectants, non-perishable foodstuffs, and more. The pantry will become a very important room in the house, almost as important as the kitchen to which it is attached. Everyone must embrace e-commerce, not just Walmart and Amazon. This means even the smallest of shops, the mom-and-pop stores who for too long have dismissed technology and are now wondering how they can ever survive. If you want to make the sale, you must go where the people are, and I suspect that post-pandemic, more of us than ever before will be online. One somewhat scarier proposition is that contact tracing will become a way of life, whether we like it or not. This means that government bodies, working in partnership with cell phone carriers, will easily be able to track us, our comings and goings, and people with whom we may have come in contact, even strangers. Given that this is an enormous invasion of a privacy we once took for granted, we will have to weigh the benefits of trying to shorten infection vectors with less personal privacy. This is not going to be a fun one, as we are already finding out with some states moving in this direction. But the most important thing we will see from the COVID era is an emphasis on agility and preparation. Many companies have already learned their lesson the hard way. In many regards, we were all caught flat-footed and empty-handed. From PPEs to toilet paper, from inability to process and fulfill online orders for curbside pickup to restaurants too stuck in place to consider converting to takeaway, the survivors will have figure out all of this, and will continue to refine their operations so that they can adapt on a moment’s notice. It’s OK to be a sit-down restaurant with perhaps only a small portion of orders sold to-go, but the ability to pivot on a dime is needed to be able to modify operations quickly to react to a changing environment. The same goes for manufacturers and supply chains. No amount of whining and complaining is going to fix things in the short-run; only those prepared and willing to make major changes now, not in a few years, will continue to stay in business. Five Weeks And All This Yes, this is a lot to process after just five weeks, and the changes confronting businesses in many regards pale compared to the divisions within broader society. People either accept the statistics, warnings, and precautions as gospel, or they defy and deny everything, living their lives as if nothing has happened, and fearful that our liberties are gone and a totalitarian state is imminent. I’ll let the social scientists worry about the people part; my concern is how to prepare future business leaders for the road ahead. I hope and pray that all of my charges pay heed to the seriousness of the matter, the implications, and how they should respond. I’ll see you on the other side. Dr “Stay Safe, Stay Healthy” Gerlich

Garage Door Problems and Possible Solutions
Homeowners expect their door to open and close each time they use it. There are times when doors malfunction and will need to be fixed or replaced entirely. Some of the most common problems with garage doors can be handled by homeowners. Here are some common door problems and possible solutions:
Tumblr media
Garage Doors Sticks Closed or Open
Garage doors that stick closed or open can be caused by some minor issues. Homeowners with remote garage openers should check the sensors, switches, and batteries first. For homeowners who open their garage door manually, they will need to first check for any obstruction in the wheel track. The lubricant used for lubricating the moving parts of the door may have been affected by temperatures and weather conditions. Making use of quality lubricants can help with sticking doors. When a door hangs unevenly, this causes the door to get stuck. The length of the springs and cable that holds the door must be of equal/even length - a professional will need to be called to get this particular task done right.
The Door Shifts Unevenly
The simplest way to solve an unevenly opening door is by getting rid of the debris or obstruction in the tracks. The tracks will need to be cleared and cleaned first to see if this will solve the problem. If this does not help in any way, the quality of the springs should be checked. The springs should be the same length and have the same stretch capacity. Garage doors with automatic openers may have problems with the motor and may need to be replaced.
Loud Sounds when the Door Opens and Closes
Loud squealing, grinding and screeching sounds coming from the door are signs that the tracks are not properly lubricated or the track is filled with debris and dirt. The whole track where the door wheels run should be properly cleaned without the use of harsh chemicals to get rid of the dirt build-up or anything that may get in the way of the door's seamless operation. Oils specially manufactured to lubricate garage doors should be used. The door should be run a couple times in order to ensure that the problem has been solved.
The Remote Control Door Opener Does not Work
The batteries and switches should be checked in order to ensure that the device is properly powered; the door may still have problems closing or opening correctly. If checking the cables and clearing the tracks does not work, then the next step may be to install new sensors or garage opener motor.
The Garage Door Falls Rapidly when it is Being Lowered
Rapidly falling garage doors pose a great risk of injury to homeowners and members of their family. This particular problem is typically loose springs or broken cables. The door should be inspected while closed to assess the real problem.
Homeowners are highly cautioned against replacing broken cables on their own, as injuries from garage door DIY repairs can be quite serious. A professional door repair technician will be able to replace a broken cable effectively and safely.

Easy Garage Door Repair Tips to Help You Save Money
Doing a garage door repair is one of the most difficult things to face especially if you are not familiar with technical DIY home repairs. Because garage doors are a combination of complicated electronics, hard-to-understand mechanical workings and hard-to-handle materials, most people shy away from doing these repairs and just leave it to a door technician to fix the job. The problem is, repairing of the doors in your garage might cost you a lot of money. A simple garage door installation already costs close to a thousand dollars, Hiring technicians to repair your door's simple problems will only add up to your expenses.
Major repairs such as panel and door spring replacements will usually call for the help of expert technicians. But as much as possible, you must first try and see if you can fix the problems on your own before you go out and look for help. In the case that you have a screeching garage metal door that causes a lot of noise when opened or closed, the first things that you have to check are rusty hardware and old door screws. People do not realize it but half of the time, it is the combination of rusty hardware and old screws that serves as the culprit when it comes to the problem of screeching garage doors. If you are able to check these little issues first before calling out the technician to do the minor repair, you might be able to save a lot of money.
If you have a door in your garage that does not fully go down when it is closed and it springs right back up before even reaching the ground, the main culprit is usually a misplaced door sensor. A door sensor that is not placed properly will most certainly cause your garage door to do unwarranted acts such as not closing down 100%. To fix this, just place your door sensors a little lower than your current placement. You might also want to check if there are objects and hindrances blocking the sensor because it can also contribute to the said problem.
Doing a door repair for your garage is not an easy task especially if you are not an "electronics" or "mechanics" kind of person. But you must also put in mind that doing simple DIY door repairs will not hurt especially if the problems are too trivial to even call a door technician. Sometimes, a non-working door might even be fixed by simply replacing the batteries of your door opener. If you want to be frugal and save more money in the bank, learning simple DIY repairs of your garage is a must.
Do you want to learn how you can save thousands of dollars? If you want to keep more money in the bank, learning how to do a simple garage door repair is a must!

It’s 2020 and things are different for everybody, including farmers markets. Memphis farmers markets have reinvented themselves to make it safe and secure for us to support local farmers and vendors. Here’s the guide to Memphis farmers markets, including 2020 info and COVID-19 updates. They plan to be closed on May 25, July 4, and September 7 this year. There is a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, baked goods and crafts housed in the bright red barn-shaped building, and plants and flowers are sold outside. Follow Agricenter International on Instagram here. COVID-19 updates: The Agricenter says they will be “installing new improvements: and asks “customers to practice social distancing and follow all CDC, local, and state guidelines.” Get the latest on their website. Winchester Farmers Market (Daily 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. 6616 Winchester Rd.) It’s called a “farmers market”, but it’s really an international, indoor grocery store. This place is amazing. It’s overflowing with a huge selection of foods, including and especially Asian and Latin American cuisine. Think every kind of produce, fresh meats, live seafood, and all manner of international snacks, treats, packaged foods, and other items. COVID-19 updates: The Winchester Farmers Market doesn’t have an online presence, so please go with the City’s guidelines for social distancing, sanitization, and mask wearing (“strongly encouraged”) as of May 18. Jones Orchard (Monday – Saturday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., markets at 7170 Hwy 51 N. and 6850 Singleton Pkwy, both in Millington) Jones Orchard offers their homegrown apples, berries, plums, nectarines, peaches, strawberries, and more at their two roadside markets in Millington. They also appear regularly at the Memphis Farmers Market, the Cooper Young market, and the Agricenter market. Check out the ripening calendar. Fresh-made jams and homemade pies are available inside their small farmers market and restaurant. They’re on Facebook. Looking for Your Own Front Door in London? Consider a Mews.
LONDON — The singer Madonna and her then-husband Guy Ritchie lived in one. The lawyer played by James Norton in the “McMafia” television series went home to one. The Profumo affair that toppled a Conservative government in the 1960s took place in one.
They are typically cozy two- or three-story structures that once served as horse and carriage stables and later mechanic’s garages, laid out along a cobblestone alley known as a mews.
Whatever their humble origins, mews houses have become increasingly fashionable, offering quiet, neighborly living in a fast-paced city.
The economic and political uncertainties around Britain’s pending exit from the European Union, or Brexit, and recent increases in taxes on real estate transactions have depressed the overall London property market, bringing many prices down a bit. But real estate experts say that mews houses have generally kept their value better than some other kinds of properties.
The most desirable mews houses are often on dead-end lanes, where children can play cricket on the cobbles, and neighbors can set out tables to enjoy a glass of wine on long summer evenings.
Builders have even taken to emulating the mews-style housing, although some real estate agents dismiss such efforts. Calling a new development a mews is “sort of like estate agents putting ‘village’ on areas: It’s, in essence, a way to create a quirkiness, or an intrigue,” said Marlon Lloyd Malcolm, the head of sales for the real estate agency Lurot Brand. “They’re just playing on the brand.”
Buyers of mews houses, Mr. Lloyd Malcolm said, fall into two distinct camps. They are usually well-to-do young professionals who are not thinking about children yet, or older people who are downsizing in the city but maintain large houses in the countryside.
“They don’t want another large house to look after, but they also don’t want people above or below.” Mr. Lloyd Malcolm said. “They may have a pension, so they don’t want to have to pay service charges, which you would get with flats. They don’t need a garden because they’ve got one at the country house.”
Mews houses, he said, also appeal to buyers who are using London as a pied-à-terre. “They may be European, Antipodean, American. It’s very unlikely that mewses are ever bought by Chinese or Russians, who generally want something a bit grander.” He added that some Arab buyers were put off by the buildings’ historical use as stables.
London has a lot of mews houses, many of them clustered near Hyde Park, as they generally stored horses for wealthy families, while the groomsmen and other staff members lived upstairs.
Lurot Brand has compiled a database of about 11,000 of them, and several times a year it sends out a free magazine, “Mews News,” dispensing advice like how to live like a Russian mobster (when the “McMafia” property was for sale at 2.45 million pounds, or nearly $3.2 million) and what to do while waiting for the market to revive (answer: Improve your existing property).
Despite the price tag, many mews houses have limited indoor space.
The picturesque St. Luke’s Mews near Portobello Road, for example, features properties from the late 1800s that offer 1,200 to 1,500 square feet of living space over three floors.
Some mews homeowners have created a more open feel by adding skylights over a staircase, creating a roof terrace where allowed or turning what were rusty garage doors into tall French windows opening onto a picnic-bench area with greenery.
During a visit to St. Luke’s Mews, Mr. Lloyd Malcolm showed a three-bedroom, two-bathroom property that he said was “in need of someone to invest a fair bit of money” to modernize it.
The entry was furnished with a small desk, but a larger portion of the ground floor was occupied by a vintage automobile under a tarp. An upstairs living room flowed into a dining space and then into a medium-size kitchen. A roof terrace was reachable by climbing through a window and up an external staircase.
Lurot Brand listed the house as “price on application.” Successful offers were likely to be around £3 million for its 1,350 square feet, including the garage.
While the upper floors had windows at the back, most typical mews houses do not. “That’s a pretty standard downside,” Mr. Lloyd Malcolm said, “the reason being that people in the big houses didn’t want their staff to be able to look out into their private gardens.”
Although mews houses can be small, dark and lack private green space, they do offer something of value that most apartment buildings or subdivided Victorian properties cannot: your own front door.
For Jilly Cholmondeley, who had a career in public relations and marketing, and her husband, Nick Pickering, an investment adviser, the move to a mews was all about having an entryway to themselves.
They also have properties in France and Sri Lanka, but their mews house near Marble Arch “is our No. 1 home,” Ms. Cholmondeley said over tea and lemon cookies in the living room. “I think they offer a unique way of living in London.”
Acquiring it was Stage 2 in their downsizing process.
“We lived in Notting Hill for about 20-odd years,” Ms. Cholmondeley said. “Then, when we found a piece of land in Sri Lanka that we wanted to build a house on, we knew we’d have to scale down in London. Not that we were in a palatial place before: We’d had a big, three-bedroom house in Notting Hill, then had moved to a quite large flat.
“But then we realized we weren’t apartment people: We had loved having our own front door. And when you hear noise overhead, it’s almost as if it’s in your own place.”
Buyers of original mews homes are often faced with the costs of renovation. While the exteriors tend to retain their period charm, “it is very rare to see any truly original features in mewses, especially in those which have been made fully residential in the last 30 to 40 years,” Mr. Lloyd Malcolm said. “These buildings originally had no flourishes, usually, no cornices, etc., as they were intended for staff and animals.”
He did recall one memorable exception: The last truly original feature he saw was in Hazlitt Mews in 2015, which “still had the stable dividers for an elephant from when the traveling circus came to Kensington Olympia over 100 years ago.”
Ms. Cholmondeley’s two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath, late-19th-century mews house also showed evidence of a prior life as a place to store a horse and carriage. The property “needed a lot doing to it,” she said, including raising the ground floor ceiling, replastering throughout, replacing the kitchen, installing skylights and solar panels on the roof, creating an office space and removing a huge semi-industrial spiral staircase that was “the sort of thing you would expect to have in a workshop, not in a private house.”
Their new staircase is her pride and joy, made of hard-wearing bamboo, with storage space underneath.
“We also had to get rid of quite a lot of furniture,” Ms. Cholmondeley said. “You realize that your furniture needs to be on a scale with the size of your property; there’s no point in thinking you can have a great big oak refectory table and chairs.”
Restorations come at a cost, of course, but for some, a mews house is seen as a more affordable option if you want your own front door.
Orly Lehmann is a Knight Frank sales agent in Belsize Park, an area of northwest London that is “mews galore,” she said. “You generally have a choice between buying a flat in a shared building, or a £6 million house across the street.
“But there are the in-between houses, the mewses,” she said. “You can get a two-bedroom mews for £1.2 million, a three-bed for £1.5 million.” Larger ones on streets like Daleham Mews, she said, are “upwards from £3 million and many have roof terraces.” As recently as last year, there was still at least one full-service auto garage on that street.
Ms. Lehmann and her husband were married a year ago and live in a two-bedroom apartment. “We plan to move in the next year, and we’re only going to be looking at mews houses,” she said, as a way to retain a reasonable commute but still have their own house in a family-friendly community.
Mr. Lloyd Malcolm said that “this community of mews is something that people either crave or they don’t.
“If you are the type of buyer who is not looking to wave to your neighbors, a mews is probably not the place that you want to be.”
For Ms. Cholmondeley, getting to know her neighbors has been a bonus.
“We might sit in the lounge and just leave the front door open,” she said. “You meet the neighbors who pass by and you might even say ‘Come in for a drink.’ You get to know people. You watch out for each other. There’s something very special about that, in this world where so many people don’t know who lives next door, above them, under them. Of course, if you had something to hide, you wouldn’t want to live in a mews, would you?”
Mews living has now come full circle for Ms. Cholmondeley.
“I grew up in Singapore,” she said, “but my very, very first stay in London was with a friend of my parents’ who lived in a very smart mews in Belgravia in the 1960s.
“I’ve moved around a lot in London, but I don’t want to leave here except in a box,” she said with a laugh. “Without any shadow of a doubt, this is my favorite home.”

Replacing the Nose on Your C1 Corvette
When I was a kid I was pretty good at just about everything I tried. But there was one thing I excelled at: taking things apart.
Oh come on, you know you did it, too. There was something satisfying about sitting on the garage floor with parts strewn about you. That feeling you get when you wonder if you can put it all back together again, man, what a rush.
I don’t get that sort of opportunity now that I’m middle aged. So I was extra excited just before I left Street Rods by Denny. Screw unbolting thrift-store bicycles; cutting C1 Corvettes is where it’s at! Joking aside, tearing apart a Corvette, pretty much any Corvette, is fairly intimidating. But after watching Josh Sanders and Doug Isbell carve that ’59 apart gave me hope for the future that this car would, in fact, go back together.
Assembly is actually simple. As revealed in the first entry, assembly is basically a seemingly endless loop of mocking the part on the body, pinpointing the interference, removing the part to correct those issues, and mocking the part again to check the fit. Unless you make a jig for a cherry-picker, it’s really a two-person job. But doing the work on this end makes the last part of the job, actually bonding the nose to the car, almost shockingly easy.
Just understand that an accurate fit is absolutely critical. The panel-bonding adhesive has a relatively short pot life, so once you mix it you have to get crackin’. And there’s no time left for fixing issues during the bonding process. It’s a get-in-and-get-out kinda job that’s best served with at least three people, preferably four. It’s the most stressful part of the job, but it’s also the fastest; like 15 minutes from start to finish, a timeline dictated by the nature of the panel-bonding adhesive. In fact, it’s a good idea to do this on a cool morning, as the Street Rods by Denny crew did. Chemical reactions depend on temperature and lower temperatures delay cure time.
What adhesive you use is fairly subjective. Many authorities—including Jerry Geiszler from Corvette Image and Darrold Elhard, Denny’s Corvette guru—recommend using a polyester-based adhesive. There are epoxy-based adhesives that are actually stronger than polyester-based materials; however, the polyester-based material has a secondary benefit: it can double as a filler to build up a surface if a panel falls a touch too short. Which is a rule rather than an exception when working with handbuilt vehicles, as we noted in the first installment.
Polyester-based fillers are made with the same resins used in the rest of the body (resin usually with milled glass fibers). So they have similar expansion rates as the body panels. That means they’re more likely to shrink and swell with the bonded materials.
You’ll rarely hear them talked about, but there are actually two subcategories of polyester resins: Orthophthalic (commonly called Ortho) and Isophthalic (commonly called Iso).
Darrold swears by a Bondo-branded material that 3M refers to as resin jelly. He’s used it for decades and maintains that it does everything he needs and hasn’t failed him. It has an Ortho base. Jerry has a little more scientific approach. He worked with a manufacturer to come up with a similar adhesive/filler that has an Iso base.
Most manufacturers like 3M/Bondo use the Ortho formulation because it’s strong and relatively inexpensive as resins go. But Iso sacrifices a little bit of budget for a fair bit more strength. Case in point, Ortho’s tensile strength is around 8,000 psi whereas Iso’s tensile comes in a little more than 37 percent stronger at 11,000 psi. And that’s not the end of it, either; Iso resins tend to be tougher—as in able to bend or endure shock loads more without fracturing.
Ortho resins tend to be rather brittle by comparison. Simply for its greater strength and durability, Iso is the resin of choice for mold-makers, hence the nickname tooling resin. Yes, Iso-formulated materials cost a little more and, no, they’re not always available at your local auto-body supply house. But depending on your value system, long-term performance may outweigh price and availability.
After watching this car go back together I’m here to tell you that, for once, assembly is a lot more fun than disassembly. Yes it’s a lot of work. But equipped with the right tools, the space, the time, and the patience, there’s no reason why even a well-trained amateur can’t successfully swap the nose on a C1 Corvette. Vette
1. Bonding begins with a nose that fits perfectly and has plenty of fixture points to stabilize its individual components. If the car doesn’t look like it’s ready for body and paint, it’s not ready for bonding. Everything must fit.
2. All trimmed up, the mounting points around the body look pristine, much how they looked 60 years ago. This is the goal; what’s here right now will stay here for the life of the car, so work carefully.
3. Josh Sanders and Doug Isbell went about double-checking mounting points and ensuring that every piece was in place. Once the body goes together there’s little chance of getting missing brackets in place.
4. There are a number of sub-assemblies, like this cowl bracket, that get sandwiched between the nose and body. But this bracket interfered with the cowl vent so Josh held it out of the way with some bungee cords. Once the nose goes on, the cords come off and the bracket snaps in place.
5. And naturally everything goes on the nose, like this cowl vent and its linkage.
6. Keeping the bonding agent off of some parts is every bit as important as getting it on others. After all, it’s tough to open a door if it’s glued to the jamb! Go around and mask components that risk getting an unintended swipe of adhesive.
7. Even though the nose fit perfectly, the crew test-ran the fitting sequence several times to reveal any potential hang-ups. They got it down to specific steps to ensure the nose goes on without grazing any of the panel adhesive.
8. The crew used two, 2-pound, 8-ounce cans of fresh adhesive to attach the nose. A good deal of the adhesive will squeeze out of the seams but it’s quite necessary in areas where the inner structure doesn’t quite meet the nose.
9. Darrold and Josh scooped almost all of the adhesive on mixing boards and mixed based on the instructions. Reserve a little bit for attaching brackets and such that go on after the nose.
10. Josh, Doug, Darrold and Denny laid on the bonding agent at approximately 1/4-inch thick. Sometimes the fit is quite loose and it’s better to have excess squeeze out than not have enough to achieve a full bond. There’s no going back to put in more once it cures.
11. The crew hoisted the nose on one last time, each person tending to their respective area. Resist the urge to rush; you have time to work thoughtfully.
12. Once the nose dropped in place, the crew attached it with the fixtures and panel fasteners that held it in place during the fitting process.
13. Fitting the nose displaces all of the excess bonding agent. Do yourself a giant favor and feather out the excess before it cures. It bears mention that it pays dividends to pay attention and study the various spots before you tear the car apart. That way you can reproduce the factory look.
14. Once he pulled out the gross excess, Josh clamped the various panels together. The little bit of adhesive that oozes out doesn’t pose any threat.
15. With the nose firmly attached, the various substructures can go in. Cool working temperatures extends the working time, so if you act swiftly you can avoid having to mix any more adhesive. Otherwise, use the adhesive you reserved earlier.
Tip: The Worrywart’s Guide to Finishing Seams and Edges
You may recall from the fitting article that the fenders stopped about half an inch short of the doorjamb edges. Jerry Geiszler and Darrold Elhard assure us that it’s safe to extend panels and build edges with fiberglass-reinforced panel-bonding adhesive. Even the factory did it.
But it does have one potential shortcoming: resins shrink as they cure, and because the edge of a fiberglass panel is so thin and offers very little surface area, it’s possible for the adhesive to pull away from the panel edge. That can cause a witness mark, which is basically a hairline crack that prints through the paint.
There are ways of preventing this from happening. The one we’re sharing is a variation of a technique taught to me by my fiberglass mentor, a commercial-composites guy named JB Donaldson.
In a nutshell, we build up the edge with the bonding agent as if we were going to finish the job that way. But then we grind the panel and bonding agent down to a taper. We don’t need to go too far up the panel—usually an inch will do. Then we bury the seam between the panel and the bonding agent by laminating fiberglass mat with the resin of your choice then sanding the surface flat.
The newly laminated area buries the seam between the edge of the panel and the exposed adhesive, thereby eliminating the chance that the adhesive will pull away from the panel as it shrinks. And because the tapered area gives the freshly laminated fiberglass tons of surface area to bond, it can’t pull away from the panel. If that doesn’t make sense, the photos surely will.
Is this excessive? Probably. However, given the cost of labor and materials nowadays, any opportunity to eliminate potential issues is a real-world insurance policy worth buying into. At least it is to JB and me.
Start by building up the edge and fill the holes with adhesive.
Then grind the surface back down so it tapers to the edge. Don’t be afraid to grind back a ways if the surface allows—an inch usually suffices, though.
Now laminate some 2-ounce chopped-strand mat over the ground area. Build up the laminate higher than the panel to avoid having to use any filler on the edge. If you want to go the extra mile, grind back the material at the top of the jamb and laminate over it as well.
This technique also applies to burying seams between panels and filling holes. Just grind a shallow valley where the panels meet (or a crater around the hole), build up the valley with mat and resin and then sand after the resin kicks.
