Aside from Agron/Nasir, they were my favorite couple. It was such an unexpecting pairing that works so well.
Gannicus and Sibyl
Okay But I know some people don’t like thought of Gannicus and Sibyl but I truly adore them together. He’s just so sweet and so Gentle with her. It was the most precious thing.

OKAY I FINISHED SPARTACUS AGAIN AND ALL IS WELL AND I AM NOT EVEN CRYING (ignore the weight in my chest, it's just post-epicness malais)
this really is one of my favourite shows of all time, but this is the first time I've watched it with an eye towards what worked for me and what didn't, soooooooooo. list time
things about Spartacus. starting with things that I wish were done differently, and then things I adore
things I wish were done differently:
Mira dying when she did: I did write a whole post about it, so won't harp on, but I think this is my biggest peeve about the show. I feel like there were many places her story could have gone outside of her relationship with Spartacus, and not just because that kiss with Saxa awakened something in her, and we definitely deserved some more women making out without it being titillation for dudes, but also because she really was coming into her own in vengeance, that feels like a storyline that was being set up -- unlike other stories that are deliberately framed through the tragedy of potential being lost, it feels like her character had far more to give thematically, she was not a "cut down before realising what she could be" type character, she was coming into her own as a leader of the rebels in her own right (+ her dying on the battlefield with Saxa, or one of them dying prior to the big battle in s4 and the other swearing revenge... that would have been good stuff!) I also just think her death is kind of random? it's not a big, cool moment, it's right at the beginning of the final episode of vengeance, comes out of nowhere -- she deserved a cool, thematically relevant death, dammit!
in that vein, I also wish Saxa were a bit more developed than she is. she's very much a different beast to a lot of the other characters, because she's arguably the only woman who isn't put into a sexually vulnerable space. she takes what she wants and she eschews vulnerability a lot of the time. Her relationship with Gannicus was... fine... especially the final scene in the finale between the two of them, but they could have given her more to do (and if Mira were thereeee....), especially as a bisexual woman who could have had a relationship with another woman that wasn't quite so voyeuristic
I do think it could have been bolder with having more women in it. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few women in this show, it's a great ensemble piece, but there weren't a lot of storylines about women in relation to each other and often those were antagonistic -- albeit understandably so -- Lucretia and Ilythia have their great fucked up relationship, Lucretia and Naevia have an interesting arc, Ilythia and Seppia. Of proper Moments, I can think of Naevia and Diona which is the most developed arc, Lucretia and Gaia which is also pretty encompassing, Saxa and Mira initially not taking to each other (and then they fight together and then the kiss *sigh*) and Saxa and Sibyl, in that Saxa is never really mean to Sibyl and even offers to have a threesome with her and Gannicus, but then Saxa fades out of the picture on that one. there's not a bunch of "not like the other girls" nonsense, which is great, but I think there were opportunities (and again, Mira was at the centre of several of those -- Saxa, Laeta, Naevia) for women to orient each other more
Lucretia's storyline in vengeance: there's some aspects of it I really do enjoy -- pretending to be an oracle, the directions hers and Ilythia's fucked up yuri go into, the ending of it... but faaar too much of it was taken with her being utterly powerless and sexually assaulted, it just felt like things were happening to her for a lot of the runtime, which was a waste of good character that's been able to scheme and be on top a lot of the time! just felt strange to bring her back mainly for that
Barca's and Pietros' story: this feels like something of a first-season blunder that is technically doing some important thematic work, so I'm not too mad at it, because it does make sense -- the suffering of innocents as one of Spartacus' big narrative shifts from strict vengeance to freeing others -- but I'm just not entirely a fan of how it all went down, and ofc comparatively there was a lot more focus on the straight characters and their feelings vs these two in s1 (Spartacus and Sura -- despite not being together for most of the story -- are given a lot of how they feel about each other and then later Mira enters the picture as well, Crixus and Naevia ofc, Varro and Aurelia, Lucretia and Quintus), whereas Barca is arguably one of the least developed of the ostensible "leads" and we only ever get the one proper scene exploring their closeness right when it's all about to end. a lot of this is made up for with Agron and Nasir in later seasons, but it takes a second to get there (although we do get just a tad more of Barca and his former boyfriend Auctus in the prequel season). I am more chill about this one, because it's definitely good will, especially in a time where you weren't getting much gay writing at all, but you always wish things had the execution they deserve
prudishness about gay sex: in relation to the above point, this show is so graphic about sex, people are fucking all the time, but apart from a couple of scenes it's kind of chaste gay sex, and it doesn't really get to depict a great range of it -- a lot of what we do get through Barca is framed as very masculine and dominating, which is fine, considering his character, but again we don't get much of him, whereas Agron and Nasir seem to have more of a playful tenderness to it, but there's arguably only one dedicated-to-men-fucking gay sex scene of the kind we have almost every episode for straight couples -- and the only times we show women having sex it's either as performance (usually slaves) or when Gaia was having a threesome with Quintus and Lucretia. just like. greater range
OHHH THIS IS TEENY TINY AND NOT REALLY A THING BUT. Castus. my final-season addition to the show. I know why you died in the narrative. but oh I wish there had been the suggestion that Agron and Nasir and you could've worked a lil smthin hinge or triangle-shaped out
things that I adore:
themes: the show is so upfront about its themes. this could easily feel like a bit of a gore-and-sex-and-dehumanisation edgy fest, and one can ofc argue if it always strikes the tone (I think most of the time it does!) -- but the reason it's different to many other stories with similar kinds of beats, is that it's constantly returning to the importance of human life, dignity, and the need to end suffering. the cruelty of the Romans is deliberately juxtaposed by people trying to not just get revenge (although there is a fair bit of that) and not just trying to help themselves (although that is explored in characters), but trying to end systems of violence. and that sincerity running through the entire time is why you get such gut punches during certain moments
The Look: listen the vibe of the show. it is not for everyone. I think the way it's put together is stunning and unique and incredibly useful for the kinds of mythologically heightened narratives it's trying to tell -- everything feels just a little like you're in a dream, visually (and then there's times where it feels alarmingly real)
fight scenes: ooohh the fighting in this show is so cool, which is good because many of the leads are gladiators! they did not have to go this hard, but they did it for us. I also like how many women do fighting as the show goes on, it's really a show that goes "listen, if you can't/don't fight, that's cool, we'll fight for you, but if you want to fight fucking go for it! and all of us are fighting in the least amount of clothes possible"
pacing: this is one of my favourite shows specifically in terms of pacing from season to season -- despite it being for sad irl reasons, the prequel/s2 added so much depth to the direction of the story, introduced the backstories of Oenomaus and Gannicus and Naevia that supported their ongoing journeys, and just was generally a really cool extra bit of world-building. the steps from s1 setting up (most of) the leads and personal relationships, to s3 wrapping up the important personal vendettas, to s4 opening up the world to its bigger, more encompassing themes and neatly wrapping them up. it's just really good stuff!
diversity of characters: here I don't just mean in terms of casting racially diverse actors (although that is also cool, and tbh could have seen even more of, although -- and I know low bar but -- it was a relief that they weren't trying to say the Roman Empire was full of only white people), but also in terms of the narrative giving lots of different skills and arcs. being "soft" in terms of fighting does not mean the character is less valued, and in fact this softness is something that is cherished in characters and mourned if lost through the violence they encounter. this especially applies to women in the story who inhabit a broad range of roles that don't diminish one another's importance. Naevia's and Mira's arcs especially see them moving through a range of roles, each of them important and speaking to how they interact with the changing world around them. Generally this is a show with really cool characters that develop a lot throughout, I could wax poetic about so many of the characters of this show and the journeys they take and the meaning they hold for the story (not the Romans, except for one. All the other Romans are fascinatingly static in beliefs and how they treat other people - not just slaves, but also each other - which is ultimately almost every Roman character's downfall, again, Themes!)
this is really encompassed by my other points, but I think a lot about writing slaves and servants in fiction, and how you'll get asides mentioning people Doing Things for main characters in stuff, but they're never there. they're written like furniture or machines of some kind, and it's really endemic to a lot of writing, whether it be historical and set in X Time Where Some People Are Treated Like This, current and set in a place/with people Where Some People Are Treated Like This, or fantasy -- especially high fantasy -- (and yes, as always in the back of my head... GoT). In this show if you're seeing slaves performing tasks, it is constantly in conversation with these tasks being inherently dehumanising, whether it be something intense (like sex or gladiatorial fighting) or preparing for a lavish party or fetching wine or simply standing and waiting for an order... the show doesn't let you forget the context in which everyone exists, whether it's someone you only see in a single scene, or a lead character. every time you return to a Roman point of view, there is a slave performing a task. and because of what this show is doing, you notice them where in many stories the sleight of hand is to make you forget. I am reminded of Emily Wilson translating the Odyssey and her talking about how people translate the roles of women within that story -- especially that Penelope is at once powerless next to her husband, but also enacts power against more vulnerable women. slaves.
"All this may make Penelope seem like an innocent victim, but she is also a woman of privilege, who colludes in, indeed insists on, the silencing of more vulnerable women. Penelope clutches desperately at whatever shards of autonomy are available in her husband’s house. After Odysseus slaughters her suitors, he tells Telemachus to kill the female slaves who have slept with them. Contemporary translators and commentators often present the massacre of these women as if it were quite ordinary, and entirely justified. The murdered slaves are routinely described in contemporary American English translations as “disobedient maids,” and are labelled as “sluts” or “whores”—a level of verbal abuse that finds absolutely no analogue in the Greek. The killing of these abused slaves (who are usually referred to, euphemistically, as “servants” or “maids”) is often described as if it were unquestionably ethical."
A lot of the power of Spartacus is in its ultimately being about an uprising. Not an uprising that toppled the Roman empire, but -- in this particular iteration -- one that sees some people successfully flee to build better lives, while those who die take comfort in dying as free people. it takes that core and doesn't forget it, so even if I have my individual Things I Wish Had Been Done Differently, as a whole, it's.... damn it's good. I think it's the best adaptation on Spartacus out there, by far. the story Spartacus deserves some epic cool over-the-top production and this is exactly it!
also a lot of the plot is very in-line with what was written about the actual movements of the rebel army and the Romans who tried to fight them (albeit, not by contemporary sources -- alas, so many writings about Roman Empire are not contemporary)

Rules: List the first line(s) of your last twenty stories. See if you find any patterns. Tag ten authors to pass it along.
He knew who was behind him even before he turned around. He should not have been so surprised that the other had tracked him down, knowing him as he did. A Brush With The Devil Can Clear Your Mind, The Hobbit, Fili/Kili
It wasn't unusual to find Anders Johnson drinking alcohol so early in the day. In fact, at one time, it had been an expectation of him. Seal My Heart and Break My Pride, The Almighty Johnsons/Being Human, Anders/Mitchell
It was getting to the point that he was getting sick of rain. It seemed that it had done nothing but rain the last several days -- and their unit had been out in it since it had started. Where Will We Stand In The Winds That Will Howl, The Hobbit, Fili/Kili
Ross came awake slowly, feeling something warm pressed against his back. He smiled faintly as he felt the fingers gently combing through his hair. Love With Urgency But Not With Haste, Return To Treasure Island/Poldark, Jim Hawkins/Ross Poldark
When the alarm went off, Fili froze in mid-stride. That particular alarm was only ever used for one thing. You'll Always Be My Only Guiding Light, The Hobbit, Fili/Kili
"You know that this is not the smartest of ideas, right?" In The Dawning Light I Found You Breathless, Return To Treasure Island/Poldark, Jim Hawkins/Ross Poldark
Dante wasn't expecting to be attacked in his own home and in front of his desk. It took him a few moments of fighting and being ready to rend and tear before a certain scent caught his nose -- and two hands wrested him down to the ground. There's No Escape When Fire Meets Fate, Desperate Romantics/Return To Treasure Island, Dante Gabriel Rosetti/Jim Hawkins
"You don't have to leave you know." The voice was quiet, but controlled, like he wasn't feeling upset by anything that had just happened. In This Twilight Our Choices Seal Our Fate, The Almighty Johnsons/Being Human, Anders/Mitchell
"I looked you up on the internet last night." Temptation Heat Beats Like A Drum, Desperate Romantics/Return To Treasure Island, Dante Gabriel Rosetti/Jim Hawkins
The thing about being one of the Crown Princes -- and the Heir -- of the newly reclaimed Erebor was that someone was always wanting you for something. Together We Can See What We Will Find, The Hobbit, Fili/Kili
He shouldn't have been so surprised that Hawk managed to find him, even way out here where so many overlapping scents and the additional scent of decay should have scrambled even the Alpha's heightened senses. Dismay or Enslave You, It Will Set You Free, Return To Treasure Island/Poldark, Jim Hawkins/Ross Poldark
This was definitely not how Fili had intended for things to happen. Them yelling at each other had been unplanned, but not completely unexpected between them as of late. The Moment of Truth, Or The Moment to Lie?, The Hobbit, Fili/Kili
The lips against the back of her neck made her shudder and her eyes fall closed. Igniting A Fire, Spartacus, Gannicus/Sibyl
He was not sure he was not dreaming when he started hearing the sound of soft song and the smell of something far more pleasant than shit and blood. Not Quite The Expected Afterlife, Spartacus, Gannicus/Sibyl
Mahdi loved moments like this. Moments where he could see the stress of the day easing from the shoulders of his beloved and knew that everything in the world that they dealt with was being left outside their tent. Words Can Get In The Way -- But Not This Time, Spartacus, Duro/Mahdi
Will couldn't help but lean against the main mast of his ship and turn his eyes to the woman who stood on deck of the nearby ship. She Is The Lock, I Am The Key, The Pirates of the Caribbean, William Turner/Elizabeth Swann
There was no telling when the letter had been secreted among Nasir's things. Someday I will ask you if I was a disappointment, Spartacus, Nasir & Naevia
If I had to select only one song that I feel sums up my life and who I am now, it would have to be "Face to Face" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I want this bliss but something says I must resist, Charmed, Cole Turner/Phoebe Halliwell
The main pattern I see is that 17 out of 20 have song lyrics as titles and for 14 of them that was a planned thing.  The other pattern I see is that I just cannot write short fics.
Anyone see a different pattern?

listen i know this is coming from me, the kid fic writer and enthusiast, BUT i think that Gannicus's character arc in s2-3 would have been better and more believable if instead of Sibyl being this shy and 'innocent' young woman that like leads him to cheat on Saxa but also gives him hope and will to live and pushes him to take responsibility or whatever they were trying to convey with all that (the cheating and jealousy storylines get so old in that show but I understand the genre I am watching) Anyways. I think that could have been more poignant and effective if instead of a romantic interest they had made Sibyl a child like an 11 or 12 yo bc I think Gannicus becoming responsible through being a reluctant father figure would have COOKED for his "wine and women uncaring if he lives or dies" character. And it would have made her obsessive hero-worship more believable, and her secretly staying in Sinuessa and needing rescue more believable, and been a straight forward motivator for him to be more responsible and have hope for the future. Which like in s2 they keep trying to imply that she's a young woman and described as childish for things and like they could have just gone all the way with that. I think it would have done numbers

do you miss gannibyl? and would you consider making more gifs of them? please? ;D
I miss them TERRIBLY. Spartacus has always been my favourite show of all time and it’s one of the rare ones that kept characters IN character and despite the tragedy of it all, it gave us beautiful perfect OTPs like Gannibyl. They were so pure, so amazing. I absolutely love them. Wish Dustin Clare and Gwendoline Taylor get to work together in the future as well.
I mean LOOK AT THEM
Tumblr media
I would love to gif them but my laptop which has photoshop is hopelessly broken. When I do manage to switch it on it gets over heated and shuts down. It’s like 6 years old now so... but as soon as I get PS installed in the other laptop I’ll definitely download the show and gif them again :)

this may be my preference speaking, but i really do think killing mira off end s3 was possibly the biggest misstep in spartacus, especially in the way it was done (THIS IS WITH THE CAVEAT IDK IF IT WAS AN EXTERNAL THING, LIKE THE ACTRESS GETTING ANOTHER JOB. STILL THINK IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY, BUT ANYWAY).
her arc was building to become something and that something was specifically going to be without her being tethered to spartacus romantically, but then it kind of ends her story on a whimper that doesn't really do her justice -- like a poor shadow of sura's death, in which she's just there to serve spartacus' pain, but doesn't really add anything of thematic value in its execution, because the whole point of her relationship with spartacus is that he'll never love her, and for her own sake she needs to let him go because she's got so much else potentially going for her
it opened up the potential and then immediately snuffed it out without going anywhere with it, or her, arc
i think the hints at her interactions with saxa, her contrasting opinions and temperament to spartacus and the bridge she creates between naevia and the wider cast (since i feel naevia is somewhat disconnected outside of her narrative with crixus in s4) makes her the glue between several parts of the plot -- especially the emotional plot -- that feel just a bit weaker without her there
like saxa gets paired with gannicus in a "pair-the-spares" kinda way, but neither of them are super connected to the rest of the main cast, because neither of them were placed with the main cast until s3 (outside of gannicus knowing crixus, but that's kinda more casual + oneomaus who also dies in s3) so they don't pull the other further into the main character sphere + they never really interacted before this season, so i don't care as much for them together and the show kind of feels a bit lukewarm on them anyway (setting up gannicus and sibyl who is also a new character). gannicus fairs better than saxa, because he becomes "one of the main four," but i do notice the female characters get a bit of short shrift when it comes to character arcs in s4 that aren't about A Dude (naevia, saxa, laeta, sibyl, even kore to an extent, but she's got some revenge to do as well)
and it's all good, it's fine, the final season is still really really good and it has an incredibly satisfying ending, one of my favourites of all time -- but mira as character was doing something that none of the others could do, she was a close friend to most of them from their time at the house of batiatus so her opinion holds emotional weight, which in many ways spartacus' doesn't always (he's like. philosophical weight. political weight. emotionally the whole point is that he's a wee bit of a stone wall because he'll never stop mourning his wife, right up until the latter half of the final season when he does try), and imo ought to have become spartacus' second in command, because without her this whole thing becomes a bit of a macho fest between spartacus, agron, crixus, and gannicus (i notice that they all kind of take on mira's role at times, with saxa and laeta also doing so now and again, but none of them with quite as much Weight to it again, because we've seen mira come to that place over the course of two seasons) (also agron and crixus spend a fair bit of time in s4 losing their damn minds, especially crixus)
and. tbh. she earned it more than any of those three. she and spartacus were planning before anyone else. she kept him from doing things that would harm others way back in s1, she was always the counter-voice to him and it would have been cool to see where they could have gone with that (whether it's her dissenting more, or whether people call her out for taking his side too much, or a mix of both or or or...)
also, while they do introduce three new main female cast members in the final season (kore, sybil, laeta), the only one that has kind of a similar role to mira is laeta, and it's, i would say, again something that would have been stronger if she had been there to witness and react to it, which, if im suggesting a point where she might have died, it could have been with crixus end ep8: spartacus has set out to create a new life and stop fighting, and laeta is his chosen partner for that. if mira -- who spent s3 coming to terms with the idea that spartacus would never love again -- saw that, it would make sense for her to go with crixus and naevia and agron (and would have had someone other than crixus for naevia to care about in those scenes)
without mira it's just naevia from s1 that's the sole woman survivor of the house of batiatus, vs spartacus, crixus, agron, and gannicus, and naevia, like crixus, is not making um... good choices in the first half of the season. and there's no one to ping off of when she makes those choices
naevia is having her whole trauma spiral and has nothing to contrast to so she just floats about doing Fucked Up Stuff, acting without anyone being able to challenge her emotionally, since crixus enables it (due to his own trauma Stuff), and that should have been mira! it's one of the more frustrating parts of this to watch, because naevia is a favourite, but in s4 she spends almost her entire arc either with crixus or off on her own killing people who haven't done anything wrong, and the viewer is kinda like... well that's no good. we need a character who is not gannicus who doesn't know her and whose contribution is calling her a stupid bitch getting in her face. someone she respects. lots of characters make dumb decisions on this show (on any show) and often in order for it to feel grounded, they need a voice at some point going: "hey. i am your emotional counterpart. we've been through shit together. and i am telling you. this is dumb. now are we going to remain friends or will this signal a split? which will be its own emotional arc." i would have been so into seeing naevia and mira fighting each other, because they've experienced many of the same traumas and are pinging off each others scars, to then making up and going on the campaign together
and. i like saxa a lot, she's one of my favourites too. but she's not a particularly deep character outside of what can make of her as a fan. if the story had done anything with the fact that they started out disliking each other, made up through the team-sparring sessions, and then saxa kissed her... well that's something to build on in s4, far more than "gannicus is currently single and saxa like to fuck"
IN CONCLUSION:
mira was by far the most pragmatic character in the cast and one with many emotional ties to characters that would have tied several characters more strongly to the core narrative + given those characters more emotional depth (naevia and saxa especially)
also would have served as a stronger tie between newer characters, especially laeta
would have broken up some of the narrative being so centered on romantic bonds over all others, giving the above female characters more to do than (mostly) follow a guy around
but also had a potential to write a sexual and possibly romantic narrative between two women (her and saxa) that wasn't for some guy on the show's titillation (yes, we had lucretia and gaia, but it wasn't all the way there, we needed that to be a springboard to a more developed relationship)
she carried the early rebellion on her back and her death should have been at a time that caused shockwaves through that rebellion and shook up spartacus' resolve in some way
it could have been deeply triggering to naevia and saxa, and depending on when she died (if it had been earlier in the season for example) then it also could have caused rifts within the main leadership of agron, crixus, and gannicus -- although my preference would have been end episode 8, beginning episode 9, or end episode 10, she's a final episodes character!
although if she'd survived the whole show, it could have been a great mirror to the beginning of the story, in which sura is destined to die to make events happen -- mira could have been destined to live despite everything being against her, keeping the spirit of spartacus alive through her survival
mira is way more "the spirit of spartacus" than any other character on this show, she's giving mirror arc!!!
basically there was just a lot more they could have done with her character and it feels like they were setting up for more, so it's less that "oh it's sad," and more "hmmm feels like a rewrite for some reason. it doesn't sit right, in the plot. everyone else's death is meaningful somehow. and hers just. eh. moving on. and in what feels like the middle of her arc, not the end of it. like they didn't know what to do with her and took the lazy way out, but there was so much they could have done"
and. saxa kissed her and they did nothing with that?? cmon!!

💋 ( from ganni ! )
Tumblr media
The unexpected attack had been brutal and bloody. While their warriors were fighting back the Romans, Sibyl had been throwing herself into everything that she could do to help. If she was focused on caring for the wounded and the frightened, she didn't give into her own fright.
Not for herself.  She very rarely held fear for herself even when she should have.
No, Sibyl was throwing herself into dealing with the wounded in an attempt to not panic about what might be happening to one particular warrior.
Gannicus, one of the best fighters, was out there with his brothers and she had not heard any word about how he fared.
She ran between the wounded, ducking pockets of fighting in order to get their wounded away to a safe location so that they could be tended.
She lost track of how long the fighting went on and by the time a hand grasped her arm and turned her around, she was tired and had more than a little blood on her.
She had just enough time to register that Gannicus was alive and in one piece before his lips were coming down firmly on hers and he was kissing her like someone's life depended on it.
Possibly hers as she pressed closer to him and welcomed the kiss.

Rewatching Spartacus and I just remembered how much I absolutely adored and loved Gannibyl. My OTP! No other couple like them. I’d be sure to check this out once I finish the series again!!!! UGH I MISS THEM SO MUCH MY HEART!!!! 💗💗💗
Anyone else a gannibyl shipper and wanna talk???
I have been reading some of the most amazing Gannibyl fanfictions for the last 2 days… this writer on fanfiction is a goddess in her way with words:

EVERYONE MUST GO AND READ!!!
So not only do I read her amazing work… but she then likes a post of mine and I began to follow sweetrupturedlight because not only is she a goddess in words but also she posts amazing things!!!
I urge those who love Gannibyl/SparLaeta to go and read her stories and look at her posts :)
